If this is just any 2 Macs, you may be able to use ScreenRecycler, from the same developer that wrote JollysFastVNC

In theory, a DisplayPort based iMac (something late 2009) can be used as an external screen from another Mac with DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port.  I know that was one of the features listed back in 2009 when I got my 27" iMac, BUT I've never tried it, so I'm not sure of the details on making that work.  I assume a mini-DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort connector is needed, but that is just a guess.

  • External monitor hooked to laptop keeps going "dark"

The screen on my laptop cracked and so I have hooked it up to an external monitor HP 2009m via VGA.  Laptop is HP Pavillion dv6 with Win7 home premium with all current updates.  After I have been working for about 30 minutes, the monitor keeps going off and I have to hit the power button which usually brings it back, but sometimes I also have to use the source button to cycle back to an active monitor.  The "power lockout" shows up occasionally and sometimes it just refuses to stay on for more than 30 seconds.  I have used the factory reset, have held the power button for 15-30 seconds and unplugged it but it still keeps happening.  I have disabled OSD and sleep and everything else I can think of.  Starting to suspect it is something coming from the laptop, have never seen anything like this and scoured forums for simliar problems/solutions (hence the holding power and factor reset items I have already tried).  I am starting to suspect it might be Netflix, although this seems odd, but it definitely happens more often if I am listening to Netflix in the background.
Anyway, I will reboot and it will be ok for awhile.  Actually, until I start watching netflix again.  Any other ideas?  Driving me insane.  Can I just get the monitor on my laptop fixed replaced?  Thanks in advance for any ideas.

you can check in power option and monitor options too
    >> start menu >> control panel >> Power options
you will see the list on the left column and you will find monitor options

  • Hook up laptop to computer

I am looking to hook up my laptop to my computer and my computer has a mini DVI. What cords do I need?

Since the mini-DVI does not carry audio, you'll need to find something that can combine the Mac's audio and video signals into an HDMI signal like this set of boxes.

I have a Macbook Pro and I don't have a DVD player. I'm wondering if there is some product I can use to hook my computer up to my TV so I can watch movies! This may be a dumb question, but I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to techy stuff... Any help would be greatly appreciated

For sound you will need a separate connection, as I said in my earlier response, connected from your audio output port to the RCA connectors on the back of your TV.  See attached images.

Guessing that your laptop and tv both have HDMI connector - get an HDMI cable - that should work.
Otherwise, you would need Svideo and audio cables.

  • Hooked Photosmart 2575 wifi for laptop with windows 7. downloaded the drivers for it.

I am trying to" hook"  my laptop to my printer via netgear.,  I have a desktop that is hard wired to it and I have the printer wired to the netgear as well.  I have down loaded the drivers for the printer from the HP site.  My laptop recognizes it (I think) but can't get anything to print. My old desktop is Windows XP and my laptop is Windows 7.  Thanks for any help.

Is the desktop working with this printer?
Do you receive any error messages?  If so, what are they?
Is there any third party firewalls installed?
    Did the installation complete successfully?
Go to Devices and Printers int he Windows 7 system.  Does the printer show as greyed out or solid color with a check mark?
Try using the print and scan doctor.  Did it show any errors?  If so, it should either correct them or provide more information about the issue.  The web page for the tool lists how to use it and what it should do.

  • Watch cable television tv on my laptop

    Hi all,
My tv's being repaired and i just want to hook my laptop up to my cable box so i can watch in the meantime. Does anyone know how to do this? I was looking at Slingbox, but I feel like I don't need anything so fancy, I should be able just to do this with a cord of some sort! Can anyone help me? I have a MacBook Pro and a Time Warner Cable Digital Cable DVR box (not HD). Many thanks!

Do you have a miniDV camcorder. Most can be used to convert S-Video from a cable box to FireWire, which can be viewed with iMovie or Vidi
    <http://www.mitzpettel.com/software/vidi.php>
If your cable box has a FireWire port, try iRecord
    <http://www.ammesset.com/irecord/>
I don't know if it can display directly, so you may have to record a program before you can watch it.
If iRecord won't work with your cable box, you will need a video input device, such as EyeTV 250 Plus

  • Downloading DVR Content to My MacBook

After getting an HDTV, I'm now renting a digital video recorder from my cable provider. I use iMovie HD6 on my MacBook running Mac OS X 10.4.11. Until now, I've been using a digital video camera as an A-to-D converter when downloading content from my analog cable video recorder. It would seem that the ADC piece is no longer necessary now that the output from the DVR is already in digital form. If I can find the right cable(s) and adapter(s) to cobble up an HDMI-USB cable, should I be able to just hook this between the DVR and my laptop and fire up iMovie and download saved content? Or do I need either a later version of iMovie or some other hardware/cable setup?

The USB port is for firmware upgrades, and if there is a FireWire port, it won't work either.
    Do this:
    1. Plug in one end of your camcorder's composite AV cable into the cable box, and the other into the camera.
    2. Use a DV to FireWire connection to get everything to the computer.
    3. Turn on the box and set the camcorder to VCR or playback.
    4. I use iMovie HD 6, but any version will work.
    5. Play the recording on the box, and hit record in iMovie.

  • New DVR, Can't Recognize Existing ESata Drive/Programs

I had a Motorola 7216 DVR box that had an external ESata drive.  The box had three issues:  froze 2-3 times a day for maybe 30 seconds, sound "clipping" during loud sections of shows/movies, and I could never get the Android app or web app to connect to the DVR.  So, I received a new 7232 DVR today.  Prior to disconnecting the old, I did the proper method of ejecting of the ESata Drive.
I hooked up the new DVR, and (possibly mistakenly) hooked up the ESata drive as well before booting it up the first time.   Did the initialization, all went well.   Went through the routine of adding ESata, rebooted, didn't recognize the drive.   Realize I maybe shouldn't have plugged it in, so unplugged ESata cord, rebooted, did Set-Top Box Auto Correct, then went through the proper routine to add external storage.   However, when rebooting, the box blinks one light for 30 seconds, then the entire display lights up, then it reboots, repeating this routine ad infinitum (nothing ever displays on the TV).
So, thinking I got a bad box, I hook up the old DVR, get it working, and then run the add ESata routine.  It now is in the same infinite loop as the old box (for 30 minutes now as I type).
Removing the ESata, and rebooting, back to normal operation, though without ESata and all of the recorded shows.
Any ideas?   Do you think my "mistake" in hooking up the ESata drive to the new box right off the bat might have messed up the drive?   I'm ordering an ESata to Sata cable so I can hook up the drive to my PC and see if it's accessable.  Maybe I can reformat it, knowing we'll lose all our programs (actually, my wife's programs......no big deal to me )
Or does it take a long time to initialize an existing ESata drive with lots of programs on it?

    Greetings, armond_in_nj!
Thanks for your message responding to my plea for help!
OK.... Finally have had time to try everything again AND make notes along the way.
    I have a Motorola STB, model HD DVR QIP 7216 P2 500GB.
I have a Western Digital external eSata hard drive, model  WDBABT0010HBK-NESN – 1TB (on the "approved" list).
And yes, I have tried everything mentioned in the post by "steveKane" just above my original. See below at the end for what happened when I tried to re-format my WD drive on my desktop PC.
When I first got my WD external HD several months ago, I had to call Verizon support to get the DVR to recognize the Western Digital external HD, but we finally got that fixed and all was fine (i.e., programs recording to external HD, status visible under DVR/Recorder Status using my remote). Then, around mid-november, when I would schedule programs to record, either when I was asleep or at work, when I went to view them later, often times one program was broken into 2 or more segments. Then a little later, sometimes while watching a recorded program, the DVR would just freeze. I would reset the Set Top Box (STB) and could continue watching the program. But this all got worse and worse and, finally, I called tech support. After a frustrating hour with a tech support person, who declared everything was fine with my STB because I could press RECORD and the DVR would record a short segment of programming. During that hour conversation, we had reset the STB more than 10 times. I finally asked to speak with this technician's supervisor, who finally agreed with me that the STB needed replacing. When I received the new STB, it would not function at all. So.... another call to support, more attempts on their end to re-set the STB, and finally they agreed that I needed yet another new STB. When that arrived, I went through all the proper steps to set up the STB first, without the external HD and, only when the new STB was working properly did I try to get it to recognize my external HD.
The Western Digital instructions for connecting their drive to my DVR are as follows:
    1. Power off the DVR box by disconnecting the AC power cord. --- Did that
    2. Connect one end of the eSATA cable to your My Book AV and the other end to the DVR box (do not use a USB cable to connect to DVR) -- Did that
    3. Connect one end of the AC power cord to the My Book AV and the other end to the electrical outlet. The power LED inlluminates. ---- I did, and it did
    4. Waii approximately 15 seconds for the hard drive to reach operating speed. -- Did that
    5. Power on the DVR box by reattaching the AC power cord. -- Did that
    6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
This procedure did not work. There were no on-screen instructions when I powered the STB back on. So, I did the following:
    1. I went to "DVR/Enable more storage" and followed the prompts from there, which at one point told me to connect the external HD to the STB, which it already was. I pressed OK to proceed and got the message that "external storage is active for this STB. To detect the external hard, please press OK to reboot the STB".
    2. Did that, waited; during reboot, a white band appears briefly across the TV screen with the words "Please wait" in red, then it goes away as the reboot process continues. Eventually, I get a message that says "Press MENU to watch FiOS TV, or turn your TV off". I press MENU, the screen appears (with red background) saying "Verizon FiOS is starting up - one moment pleast. Initial download in progress. It takes about one minute", then after a minute or so, the TV image appears.
    3. I go to DVR/Recorder status, and the external HD is not there.
Since the STB prompted me to connect the external HD during step 1 above, I decided to power everything off, disconnect the eSATA cable from the back of the STB, reconnect power to the external HD, then reconnect power to the STB to reboot.
Everything in step 2 above proceeds as outlined there, but still I got no on-screen instructions after FiOS started back up. So, I went to DVR/Enable more storage, followed the prompts until asked to connect the external HD to the STB, at which time, now, I get a pop-up screen that says "The connected external HD has been previously used with another STB with a different DVR. Using the drive on this STB will remove all existing content on the drive. Do you want to use this drive?" Options are "ACCEPT" or "REJECT". I press OK to ACCEPT, then we go through the whole reboot thing again, and still no sign of the external HD under DVR/Recorder status.
I even tried connecting the WD external HD to my desktop computer (running XP Professional) using a USB cable (following "steveKane's" suggestion in his posting of 12-02-12), thinking I could try to reformat the drive on my desktop. After connecting, I go to Window Explorer and the drive is not there. When I open the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the Task Bar, the drive is visible there. I tried stopping the device, removing it, then waiting a bit and reconnecting it, but get the same results. Not visible in Explorer so that I can try to re-format.
The posting by "mcorbo" right above "steveKane's" posting says "The only way to reuse the drive is to let the dvr reformat it." So how does one get the DVR to reformat the drive????
I hope I have given you the information needed.
I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • New to X1, some issues with DVR.

Two questions, since Live Chat seemed to totally misunderstand me. Is there an X1 box that uses Component cables instead of HDMI?  To clarify further, the Red/Green/Blue wires for video.  I received my self-install kit today.  Tried hooking up the X1 DVR in the living room and it wouldn't register.  Put it in the bedroom, registered fine, plays TV fine.  I hooked up a smaller Pace box in the living room instead, and that too, registered and plays TV fine.  Trying to bring the DVR back to that room doesn't work.  Do the DVRs need stronger signal? Thanks.  Sorry for being brash, but chat support has really failed me time and time again.

Thanks again for the reply, Rick. I had to step out of the house for a little bit and came back home to a registration page on the RNG150N.  Thankfully, it's currently working with no trouble.  I haven't tried the DVR or On Demand yet, but live TV works, so I'm pleased. I think there may be some confusion with my last post, so I wanted to clarify a couple of things. I already scheduled the appointment, with the charge.  I did that prior to my last post. As far as the wiring goes, here's where I'm coming from:  The previous tenants in this unit did not have Comcast service.  I had three technicians out to my home trying to find a valid signal to work with.  Finally we found *something* but it wasn't enough to work with, so they set it up for construction.  This started on June 8th.  For three weeks while I waited for construction to come by, I had no internet, no TV. All the while, there was no communication from Comcast with any updates, and whenever I called them for an update, they had zero record of anything, wanted to set up new installs, and generally were useless.  In fact, I even had a representative tell me I was disconnected because of non-pay. Regardless, once construction wired the home with brand new wiring I figured I was in the clear.  I cannot stress this part enough.  I watched then bury a new line directly from the lockbox, climb up a ladder and fish it through my apartment wall.  I helped the guy fish the line through the closet in the bedroom.  Every single piece of wiring in my apartment is brand new.  Not used.  I can assure that 100%. What I can't guarantee is the rest of the building.  I have no idea what the status of the lockbox is, or if there's ingress in my building.  This is the frustrating part, because after watching these two really fantastic techs run brand new wiring, I was under the assumption that this would be ready to go and a very easy install.  So, when the sales rep, who was setting up my order for the third time, said I could have a tech for $100 or a self-install kit for $10, I figured hey - it's brand new wiring.  I should be fine, right? And then the boxes took over a week and a half to arrive, which builds on that frustration. So here we are.  And here I'm posting.   I hope that sheds a little light on my situation and where I'm coming from. But to answer your immediate question, yes.  Tech on Thursday, 9-11, charges or not. EDIT: Unrelated, when I scheduled the appointment with the rep at the walk-in, I found out that my modem isn't registered to my account.

  • Connect Laptop to a TV

I have Satelite A215-s7437 and I would like to know what I need to hook my laptop to my TV. Any Suggestions? Also my DVD/VCR is Toshiba.

Well I see that your laptop has an s-video out port and a VGA port, but
it also depends on what inputs are available on your TV,
your VCR/DVD probably has component (red, yellow and white) and Coax.
The cable you want should have an s-video at one end and on the other anything else
(it can be another s-video or component or even HDMI), but it depends on
your tv and whether you want to connect to the DVD/VCR.
The reason that I'm not mentioning VGA is because its
    an inferior way to connect.

  • How do I combine an iTunes library on an external hard drive (laptop) with an iTunes library on an external hard drive on my PC?

How can I combine the iTunes library on an external hard drive (hooked to laptop) with  the iTunes library on an external hard drive (hooked to PC) so that both external HD's and both laptop and PC have all the music on each one?

no need to create a secondary library - too troublesome, IMHO. you can spread your library over as many drives you can connect to your Mac (wired or wirelessly):
    iTunes > preferences > advanced.
point iTunes media folder location to the external
on the same tab, ensure the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked
    okay out of preferences
highlight the content to be moved in iTunes and right-click
select consolidate files from the pop-up menu
wait for the process to finish
when done, you may delete the original files from your boot drive.
alternatively, you could move the whole shabang to the external HD:
copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music to the external, launch iTunes while holding the option(⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
when done, be sure to point iTunes media folder location to the external so that new additions to your library will be put there. also, you need to make sure the external is mounted on your desktop before you fire up iTunes.
