Hook up macbook pro to a TV

I want to play what I stream from Netflix from a macbook pro to my TV, my TV is seven years old.  Thanks.

That's called Video or Composite Video (on the Yellow), Apple does not sell an adapter for that, but some third parties do.
Which MacBook Pro would determine which port you need at the computer end. Latest MacBook Pro would use Mini DisplayPort to Video adapter.

Quite right, but as the OP does not have component or composite connections not important.
To the OP, this does work, but is not the cheapest, and as it appears that Apple no longer sell an SVideo adaptor cable 3rd party it will have to be.

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a sony bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. The same set up has worked with three other, though different televisions. Any thoughts?

I am trying to hook my MacBook Pro to a Sony Bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. I have used the same setup with three other TV's, each a different brand with no problem. Any ideas?

Is the TV set to take input from the HDMI connection?
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.  Check your connections.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.

My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

  • What audio cable do I need to hook from macbook pro to an amp?

Yeah, just wondering if any audio cable will work to hook from Macbook Pro (10..5.8) to an amp?  Not skilled in this area at all!  thanks!

It would help to know what inputs your amp has, what outputs your computer has, and what you are trying to accomplish.

  • Hooking my MacBook Pro up to external speakers

Hey guys, let me explain my setup.
I'm using an old Sony DVD player to play my CD's. The DVD player is connected to my receiver via red and white audio cables.
The receiver is an Onkyo that allows me to use 2 types of inputs: the red and white audio cables and the traditional speaker wire.
I have 4 speakers connected to the receiver via speaker wire.
Is there any way to hook my MacBook Pro up to the receiver so I can play my iTunes music on my home stereo?
Hope that wasn't too confusing, and thanks.

    I have this exact cable.. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/PureAV-RCA-Audio-Cable-6-AV20300-06/sem/rpsm/oid/ 116033/catOid/-12930/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
    It works great!
P.S. I also use it on my Onkyo receiver

When I tried to hook up my macbook pro to a projector and play a dvd, the dvd wouldn't work. I would only get an error message. The dvd worked when it wasn't connected to the projector but doesn't work when it's connected. It just shows a blank screen as if it's trying to connect. Also, the connection works when I don't play the dvd. Any ideas?

  • What is the best cord to hook the MacBook Pro up to a TV?

I need to hook up my 15inch MacBook Pro to a TV and I was wondering what is the best way to do so.

Your MacBook Pro probably has a Mini DisplayPort on it, and your TV (if digital HD) probably has an HDMI port on it. The best way to connect it would be to use a cable or adapters so that you have Mini DisplayPort on one end and HDMI on the other. This will give you an all-digital HD signal for the best possible picture. You can get the cable from Apple or from amazon.com or monoprice.com.
If your TV is older or doesn't have an HDMI port on it, then you use whatever video port on the TV provides the highest resolution.

  • Trouble hooking up MacBook Pro to Sony bravia tv

Hello there again, so ive connecting my macbook to my tv using a minidisplayport to hdmi adaptor just fine. The problem is getting the audio to come from the TV. i have a phono plugs 3.5mm [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Mountain-3-5mm-Phono-Plugs/dp/B000NHOMSQ]which you can find here] and i plug them into the audio in but just no use. I've plugged them into the PC audio in and tried switching the sources to see if the sound will come out, no sound at all.  Any help?
    I use a Macbook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2009
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Processor  2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
My TV is a Sony Bravia model number Kdl - 40hx803
    The audio plugs are [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Mountain-3-5mm-Phono-Plugs/dp/B000NHOMSQ]
if you need any more info dont hesitate to ask

Exactly what miniDisplayport-HDMI cable do you have?   That's probably the problem.
I use the following and it works perfectly between my 2009 MBP and Bravia TV:
    Apple miniDisplayPort-DVI Adapter
    Monoprice.com DVI-HDMI cable
Also, on the Bravia TVs you are advised to use HDMI #4 input.  I don't know why, that's just what Sony advises.

  • Help me decide: 30" Cinema hooked to MacBook Pro vs. 24" iMac

I'm a daytrader and I'm looking to move my trading environment to Macs.
A month ago I bought a MacBook Pro (first Mac ever) and planned on buying the 24" iMac. In short, I need as much screen real estate as possible to display quotes and charts using every mm of screen space with the smallest font I can possibly see.
Now I'm wondering if I should go with the 30" Cinema instead of a 24" iMac off the MacBook. If I go with this option, I would be disconnecting the display daily (I work from home and like to retire to the couch in the evenings with the MacBook).
In terms of Pros and Cons, obviously the Cinema means one less computer to maintain (good), yet one less computer to fall back on (bad).
What else should I consider? Any advice would be much appreciated. Upfront cost differential isn't a major issue.
    Thanks in advance.

Screen real estate is the key :
MacBook Pro + 30" (extended desktop mode) :
    2560x1600 + 1440x900 = 5 392 000 pixels
    24"imac :
    1920x1200 = 2 304 000 pixels
So, you can fit twice as many quotes with the first option.

  • How to hook up Macbook Pro to Television set

As there's no HDMI port, how do I hook up my laptop to TV?

Look for a Thunderbolt or minidisplay port on your MBP.  Then use a cable on order of this to connect the two:

    Ciao.

  • How could I hook my MacBook Pro to my Samsung LCD TV??

I'm using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter hooked to an HDMI cable which is hooked to the TV. nothing is showing. How to go from there?

Get a cable such as this:

You do not need any adapters and it will transmit audio and video.

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro up to my old sony trinitron tv! HELP!

I have all the right cords... at least I think. I have VGA SVGA to S-Video 3 RCA TV AV Converter Cable Adapter, a s video cable (male), and a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Female Adapter for Mac. I tried plugging all these things in, but none of it worked.  I do not know if I am just pluggin stuff in wrong or if I do not have the right settings or what.  Thanks!

It would be helpful if you indicated what EXACT model MBP you have and the connections available on your TV.
Note that resolution on your older SONY is not going to be very good compared with your MBP.
    Ciao.
Please also indicate what OSX you have installed on your MBP.

  • How to hook up a apple Macbook Pro to a Denon AVR-X2000 receiver?

I Hooked my Macbook Pro to my receiver and got a picture on my flat screen but no sound came out of the speakers. The sound only came out of the specker from the laptop. Can anyone tell me if I have to turn something off on the laptop or do I need a specail cable?

Thanks to Phone support from Apple I was able to try a few things to make this work. You hook up your HDMI cabe to your receiver and make sure you have your receiver on the right channel. You also have to have a HDMI cable going from your receiver to your TV, You should get a picture if you have your TV on the right input channel. For the sound to come out of the receivers speakers you have to go to your laptop and click on system preferences,, then click on sound, then Output and in there you will see your receivers name ( Mine being Denon) click on it and the sound should work through your receiver speakers. Don't forget to change it back when you are done.

  • Hooking MacBook Pro to XBox 360

I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to hook a MacBook Pro up to an XBox 360 and run media presentations, watch photos etc on it.
My boyfriend can do it through his PC but I was hoping there was a way to do it through my new MBP instead. It would be really handy if we were able to do it.
Thanks for any suggestions or ideas you may have.

Elgato. I'd say go with the EyeTV EZ. It'll run you $149. Just plug your 360 into the EyeTV, connect the EyeTV to your MBP via USB, and you're all set. I just picked one up just yesterday at Apple when I was accessorizing my shiny-new 17" MBP. Oh, how that baby purrs.... Anyway, that's what you're looking for.
If you want, you can also get the EyeTV 250. It costs $199, but it has a built in encoder...meaning that you can use it like a TiVo: pause, fast forward, and rewind live TV. You just have to make sure to turn off the encoder when you're using the Xbox, otherwise there'll be a lot of latency and the image will lag.
Of course, the EyeTV easy can record TV, too; you just can't pause, forward, and rewind like you can with the 250.
Edit: Whoops. Thought you meant so you could run a 360 on a MBP. My bad. Well, that's how you'd do it, if you were wondering
