Hook up to HDTV

I have a black MacBook (I got it right before they stopped selling the black ones).  So I bought a Mini-DVI to HDMI and the proper cables to hook up the HDMI end to the HDMI on my Panasonic 32" but nothing is happening.  I have tried turning off both the computer and the tv and then turning on my computer while the cables are hooked up, but nothing happens.  The screen goes blue for a few seconds and then my computer screen goes back to normal; nothing ever shows up on the tv.  Am I doing something wrong?  Do I have the wrong cables?  I got the cables on Amazon and they look fine.

I have written these details to save other users time. I had thought that simply connecting the right cables and pointing the HDTV to the appropriate input source would do the job, but all I got was the purple galaxy background on the TV. Some setting changes are required, as you suspected.
CONNECTIONS
Start out by clicking on the apple symbol -> about this Mac -> more info to obtain the model identifier. Useful for knowing what cable adapter is needed.
For video, my Mac 5.1 required a male Mini DisplayPort to female HDMI adapter. Then I connected the regular male-to-male HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV.
For audio, the Mac 5.1 audio out port is the same as the headphone port. My HDTV came with a stereo cable which took care of this connection. By the way, I checked whether setting modfications were needed via system preferences -> sound -> output tab and found that the only selection allowed was “headphones”.
DISPLAY PREFERENCES
I referred to articles 61511, 61330 and 61512 on multiple displays. In OSX 10.5 I went about changing the settings as follows.
System preferences -> display
There will be two windows (this might not be immediately obvious as they are “cascaded” one right behind the other), one representing the display for the TV (mine was called color LCD) and the other representing the laptop screen (mine was called SMB2430HD).
Within the laptop display, there were three tabs: display, color, options.
Within the TV display, there were three tabs: display, arrangement, options.
Note that in order for the arrangement tab to be active, the video connection must have been hooked up and the TV turned on and pointed to the correct input source e.g. HDMI1.
RESOLUTION
Go first to the display tab of each window. Article 61330 says to set each to the same resolution and colour depth (I think the latter has millions as one of the selections). I was not very good at this. I tried 1024 x 768 stretched but the DVD movie I was playing did not entirely cover either the TV or laptop screen.
However, the ColorSync Utility had become activated and I believe it helped me later one. When I clicked on this utility I got a window called “profile first aid” and I clicked on the “verify” button. I think this is what led me to the 800 x 600 stretched resolution. Result: the DVD movie now covered both TV and laptop screen.
Also under the display tab (probably of the TV display at this point in time) is a check box for “show displays in menu bar”. Checking it will result in a shortcut to your display settings from the desktop.
Finally, under the display tab (within both TV and laptop display) is a useful button called “gather windows”. At this point, I had not yet chosen under the arrangement tab “mirror displays” and was getting “lost” for the following reasons. Curiously the TV display was shown on the Macbook screen while the laptop display appeared on the TV screen. Confused? So was I.
Sometimes I did not see the cursor on the screen I was looking at. So I would chase after the cursor by using the trackpad to continuously move to one side or the other, depending on which side I was allowed to move towards. Pressing the “gather windows” button moves the two displays together, one cascaded behind the other.
ARRANGEMENT
Within the TV display is the arrangement tab. Here you can find the “mirror displays” check box. The default is apparently called “extended desktop”. If you check the box, the identical images appear on both the TV and the laptop screen.
The tabs will also be automatically reorganized as a result.
Within the laptop display, there will be four tabs: display, arrangement, color, options.
Within the TV display, there will be two tabs: display, options.
By the way, although the DVD movie now covers the entire screen of both TV and laptop, on the TV the Mac menu bar remains partly off screen.
DARKENING LAPTOP SCREEN
When watching the HDTV you likely will not want to be distracted by an active laptop screen. To put it to sleep you need to connect an auxiliary keyboard or a mouse. The alternative is to hit the F1 button to reduce the backlighting.

  • IMac hooked up to HDTV - display and colours

    Hi
I have hooked up my iMac to my HDTV Panasonic TC 26LX70
It works pretty well, i have 2 issues though:
Each time i hook up the imac to the hdtv, the display for my imac changes automatically. I tried to find the good setting in systems preferences but so far nothing great. I still have the display of the imac re-initializing eah time
The colours on the HDTV are not as good as on the iMac screens, they are more "HDTV" like, too bright, too flashy. How can i get the same ones than on the mac?
Please I would appreciate your opinions
    Thx

If you have it set to +Mirror Displays+ in System Preferences Displays pane Arrangement tab, you should uncheck that setting. Then, the two screens together will show an extended Desktop, as represented in the diagram on that preference pane, and you will be able to set the resolution on the two screens independently. So you can use the optimum settings for each screen; the standard HD resolution for most HDTVs is 1920x1080 (1080p).

If you have a MacBookPro with the expresscard34 slot, a Matrox MXO2 mini will feed an HDTV with HDMI in to give you a fair representation of the material
If you don't have the slot, the best you'll be able to do is use the TV as a computer monitor. This setup will not be appropriate for color grading. In fact, if the laptop doesn't meet COLOR's minimum screen size, you won't be able to run COLOR anyway.

In as much as this is really not a "Using Mac OS X Leopard" forum problem but more of an iMac display issue why not post in the appropriate iMac hardware forum?

  • Hooking up to HDTV

I hooked up my laptop that has a blue ray player and an HDMI port to a HDTV.  It doesn't look right.  Does the signal that comes out of the laptop affect the 1080p on the HDTV?  The HDTV is 120 hz and the laptop is 60 hz.  I just figured the signal that came out of the laptop would match the HDTV.

That's called extended desktop mode.  It's a logical extension of the desktop to the right of your monitor.  Just drag your app off the right side of the monitor and it will appear on the TV.
These setting are found in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.
Edit:  A quick way to toggle between extended desktop mode and mirror mode is to press CMD F1

  • DVI-HDMI Adapter for hooking up a HDTV...Few problems...

I have a spare 32" Sharp HDTV with HDMI, so I placed this next to my Mac Pro and used a DVI-HDMI adapter. Here are the problems:
With my standard GeForce 7300 GT you cannot use both connectors, as they are too close together - so I could not even test to see whether both DVI outputs can work at the same time. So I have to disconnect my 23" cinema display. Now, the Macpro recognizes the TV - in the display preferences - but the resolutions are not good - the only one that works is 1280x720. Other resolutions listed, ie, 1344x756 and higher are listed as interlaced and all cause flicker. This means I do not see the OSX top menus.
I wish to be able to show clients samples of edited movie clips on a HDTV both in FCP and standalone QT. I doubt that appleTV is the answer, as this only works in iTunes - plus, my Mac is next to my TV anyway.
Any thoughts on making this work better? I am trying to not have to buy a new video card. Maybe the Black Magic Intensity card for HDMI output is the answer?

I can live with the lower resolution - the TV is actually 1366 x 768, but the most annoying is not being able to use both DVD connectors on the card at the same time - they are too close together, how stupid is that?
Ideally, I would like to see both the cinema display and the HDTV running at the same time - or least not having to manually switch over the adapter at the rear.
I see no way around this, unless I change video cards but for $250 I can get the Black Magic HDMI card which outputs DV via HDMI to HDMI.

  • Macbook Pro won't hook up to HDTV.

I bought a mini displayport to HDTV cable and it won't connect to the tv. I have everythign connected properly but the only thing I'm seeing might be a problem i that my Display settings, it doesn't have the Arrangement tab. I am currently running OSx 10.8.2 (Lion).

What miniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter are you using? sometimes they are incompatible and have problems.

  • "HD versions available for iPad and Apple TV"...What about my HDTV???

So I have a Mac Mini with HDMI hooked up to my HDTV.
Last night I wanted to rent a movie when I noticed that I could only rent the SD version. At first I thought maybe it was only available in SD.
But then I noticed some text saying that it was available in HD on iPad and Apple TV.
Is it just me or is this ridiculous? The Mac Mini has an HDMI on it so it can be hooked up to HDTVs...It's exact same as an Apple TV.
Why on earth can't I watch the HD version on my TV?
Please tell me that I am an idiot and there is some setting that I'm missing that will allow this.

I assume you are playing these directly from iTunes. Make sure the default is set to HD. You can do this by right clicking the movie in question, go down to version, and select HD as the default.

  • How can I connect HDTV and LCD monitor to PC using both -as a double monitor.

I recently purchased HP Pavilion PC a6600f with HP w1707 monitor. I also purchased a DVI to HDMI cable to hook PC to Samsung HDTV. I can use the VGA cable to hook to the monitor and the DVI to HDMI cable to hook to the HDTV but have to unplug one to use the other. Is there any way to configure Windows Vista Home Premium to show on both screens at same time or at least be able to switch between the two without having to unplug one and restart computer?
    This question was solved.

I believe you have to press Source or the Mode button to switch between video inputs on your monitor.

  • Adding a HDTV with 2 monitors

I currently have a G5 with 2 17" studio displays using an ADC port and a DVI port with a DVI/ADC adapter. I would like to hook up my HDTV for occasional use.
Can I use a DVI splitter with the ADC/DVI/adapter 17"Display along with a DVI to HDMI cable on the other? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Due to the nature of DVI output, I am not sure that a "splitter" will do the trick. However, there are switches that you can buy that will allow you to switch the DVI signal from the monitors to the TV when needed.

  • Upgrade to 10.5.7 and now i get 1080/24p on tv??

I was hesitant to upgrade to 10.5.7 considering all the issues specifically centered around the screen issues since id already had problems hooking up my hdtv and detecting proper settings. i finally made the jump yesterday, and lo and behold , instead of my tv reporting 1080p simply, it now reports 1080/24p!!
this is all well and good, except the slight problem, if i can call it that, is that i noticed the mouse has suddenly gotten very sensitive, even though ive notched down the sensitivity, and it seems a bit erratic.
secondly, ive noticed when watching tv shows through my mini, i now have audio/video sync issues. i realize thats probably because the tv is now internally converting all video to 24p, while sound is still synced with 30/60hz. any idea how to fix this? the wierd thing is i can no longer find a 1080p output option, its either 1920x1080 at interlaced, which will not cut it, or 1920x1080@24hz.
anybody else seeing this? i havent read anything about this yet.

I am having the exact same problem, have vista/hp media center also, sometimes if I double click it will open after all, the arrow keys do navigate however, any suggestions?

  • Audio out from HDMI port?

I have connected my TV and Booklet via a standard HDMI cable.  This same HDMI cable works fine with my DVD player.   When I use it with my booklet, only video seems to be sent to the TV via the HDMI cable.  Is the HDMI out port supporting only video, or audio as well? I understand the booklet supports HDMI 1.2, which should support an audio profile, as far as I know.
Let me know if you have been able to get audio to work over HDMI.
    thanks,
    John

I found your discussion attempting to find the answer to the same question.
I won 5 of these things at auction and wanted HDMI to be a selling point
I researched far and wide and now I think I have the answer now.
I had to reload the OS and  all the drivers for all 5 units
I read some of the replies to this topic and with some people saying that they had audio and I didn't, I felt that either I was crazy or someone is not truthful. so i had a thought ,
after about  the 3rd unit I tried to just try to hook it up to a TV bare without Nokia updated software
What do you know, it worked.
So I have come to the conclusion based upon using both units after testing them with and without the update, is with the stock driver provided, you will get the audio from the HDMI port; if you update the software from the updater(which I noticed it says the driver is MANDATORY)
    You will not.
There is a plus and minus on both occassions
With the graphics driver update you can scale your video once hook to an HDTV to full 1080p HD; but you wont get any audio (at least for now)
Without the update you will get the audio out , however you will only get the same native resolution as the netbook 720p
So contemplate which feature is more important you   and make your choice.
Higher picture quality(full HD) with the driver yet I need 2 cable  (HDMI AND 2.5 to RCA)
OR lower  resolution720p but audio as well
I hope this helps but i see my next challenge for both you and is to see if we can roll back the driver if we want audio over HDMI.

  • Equium A100-147 - Native resolution on external LCD doesn't work

    Hi,
My Equium A100-147 has 1 VGA and 1 S-Video output, so I'm using the VGA output on a external LCD monitor with native resolution of 1680x1050@60hz, but the integrated Intel 945 graphics card doesnt give me the right resolution to choose for this monitor, the most close is 1600x1200 and some another weird widescreen resolutions that make my monitor scaling show a ugly image.
So I tested another external monitor with native resolution of 1920x1200, and the closest resolution the Intel drivers gave me was 1920x1080, even installing both monitors drivers, removing and reinstalling the driver and even formatting the machine and reinstalling everything from zero didn't give any different results.
I have another laptop MSI Wind with the same graphics card built in and the very same driver version, and the laptop detects both monitor and the right resolutions for them, so it's not a monitor driver problem.
Seems for me that is a problem with the S-Video output that makes this mess, but there is no way to disable it in the BIOS or any another place in device manager I have seem yet.
Does anyone can give me some advice for what can I do?
    Thank you!

actually the resolutions available to external monitors here on the intel control panel are
    800x600
    1024x768
    1280x1024
    1400x1050
    1600x1200
    1856x1392
    1920x1080
    1920x1440
    2048x1536
so it seems possible to use another widescreen resolution at least to match aspect ratio without matching the right resolution.
I've just hooked my 1080p hdtv via VGA and I'm able to use 1920x1080 16:9 aspect ratio
seeing this another resolutions that aren't on the manual, maybe its possible to make custom resolutions as well.
I've tried make a custom driver using the intel ones and power strip but without success because I don't know exactly the range of frequencies to setup the driver .inf

  • MacBook to DVD/VCR Combo to TV

    Hey All,
I have the white MacBook 13" purchased in Oct 08. I have a newer DVD/VCR Combo unit that is hooked into my HDTV via HDMI to, I think, DVI. (I'm at work right now). Anyway, my question is, can I run the mini-DVI to the DVD/VCR Combo into the TV with the mini-DVI to HDMI cable? Or will I lose valuable signal and video? Should I connect directly to the TV?
The TV is a Mitsubishi HDTV ready 1080i widescreen 55 in, projection. I think it is from the 2004 era. I bought it used and it didn't have a manual.
    Thanks for any help!

There should be no signal lost from the VCR to the TV. That will just be a digital pass-through.

This is actually the peer support forum for Toshiba USA. While you are still welcome here, yours would appear to be Toshiba Europe model, perhaps from Hungry. In the future, you may want to consider using the Toshiba Europe Forum.
Given your problem, I would try to reload your latest Toshiba supplied display driver, as it is this driver which handles HDMI sound. While we are at it, let's reload your Intel Chipset Utility as well. Download these two drivers, these are .zip files, so you will have to extract the .exe files and double click on the .exe files to install, rebooting after installing each one, in this order:
    Intel Chipset Utility
    AMD Display Driver
After the second reboot, test your HDMI sound again.
Please let us know what happens. Good luck.
