Hook ups

I recently purchased a Apple TV. However, I have an older model Sony Grand Vega LCD Projection TV that has HD capabilities however, does not have an HDMI port, rather it has a DVI-HDTV IN VIDEO port. It shows it needs a DVI-D single link cable. What do I exactly need and how do I hook up the system to sync with the computer.

Short answer is no - Verizon does not support the A/V inputs on their STBs.
You could go to Radio Shack (or someplace similar) and get an RF modulator that automatically switches to your  A/V device when it is powered on.

  • Hot or Cold Hook-Ups of the DVI

Many folks talk about their "hot" MB's, and problems associated with their DVI hook-ups. Nobody from Apple has stated just how the plug-in of the DVI to the MB should be done. I the "Old Days", before USB's and Firewire's, you'd never plug-in anything when the computer was on. So Apple, tell us what you recommend--a "hot" or a "shutdown" for the DVI plug-in?

I certainly know Apple reps don't opine on this site--or even spy on it--, but many surrogates do. I've been with Apple since 2000, have all their products and love them. But, getting answers is like asking a question of Ms. Clinton or any other politician or lawyer. There ain't no answers most of the time.
All I want to know from the inside intelligentsia, is there a right way or a wrong way to plug-in the DVI!

  • Stereo speakers to audio video hook ups

is it possible to hook up stereo speakers by themselves to the back of my tv...how do i convert to speaker wire to audio jacks. what do i need to do this with
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No, it is not possible to do so because tv's do not have the required amps inside to sustain the power of the speakers. You would have to buy a stereo receiver. (i.e. 5.1 receiver)

  • I want to display MacBook Pro email videos on my Panasonic TV.  I bought it in Jan 2010, one article says the function is supported on mid-2010 models and later.  Think I can buy the hook ups and get this to work?

I want to display computer contents (email videos, YouTube videos) on my Panasonic HDTV.  Can a model from Jan. 2010 do this?  Thanks.

Yes, easily — but to get the audio to the TV through the same HDMI cable as the video, you'll need an adapter like the ones I linked in this thread:

    Hi Whit!,
You will encounter this same question with another player aswell if you purchase one.
Check if your car stereo/CD player has any inputs. The manual should cover this. If you have an auxiliary/line input, then you're set, you'll just need the right cables to connect. Some stereos (like some Pioneer models) have a connection on the back that you'd need a special cable for, but once you have that you'd have an aux input.
If you don't have this, the other option is always an FM transmitter, it connects to your player and transmits the audio at a certain frequency, you tune into that on your car stereo's radio and you can receive the signal (so wirelessly). Check out this page for some more info (and a picture).
If you li've in the UK though, bear in mind that FM transmitters are still illegal there (last time I checked).

  • Comcast to FIOS questions

I am considering switching from comcast to Verizon FIOS.  I have questions that have not yet been answered for me.  Until they are, I will not be able to make the switch.
    1.  After the main FIOS comes into the house, does it then use the existing COAX cable to connect to my TV sets?  I have gotten conflicting answers on this.
    2.  With my current Comcast set up, I have two DVRs on the main TV so that I can record more than 2 shows at the same time.   Each DVR has a separate remote control since they are different manufacturer models.  I have read that will not be possible with the Verizon FIOS setup.   What alternate solutions are there?
    3.  In my current set up, the cable comes into the house and then the COAX cable is split multiple ways so that it feeds my computer and wireless router (via the Comcast cable modem) and also feeds to my main TV on the first floor (split again to go to the two DVRs) and via COAX to an upstairs bedroom.  If those various COAX hook-ups can be used for the TV, then things are good.  If a new cable needs to be pulled for the upstairs TV, then that is not so good.
    4.  The current telephone connection box is on the opposite side of the house from where the Comcast cable enters the house.  The FIOS box on the street is on the same side of the house as the telephone connection box.  How will the technician come into the house?  Will the existing copper phone lines still be used?
    5.  With respect to #2 above, what about using TIVO.  If I get a TIVO box and their subscription for my second DVR, what fees from Verizon will be required to make it work (e.g. cablecard, etc.).
    6. With respect to #3 above, that upstairs TV is currently using just a digital adapter box (Comcast just raised the rental fee for that from $0 to $1.99 per month).  I don't need any sort of DVR up there -- does Verizon have a similar device and what will its rental fee be.

Note that these forums are for customer to customer assistance.  You won't find Verizon answering specific service or pricing questions here.  For that, you need to contact them directly through the methods listed on their "contact us" web page.
FiOS is fiber to the home.  At the home, a device called an ONT converts the fiber to coax and telephone.  The ONT can be mounted inside or outside.  A power supply with a backup battery is installed inside near an AC outlet.
Once the ONT is installed, it connects to your existing coax network for TV and internet.  It connects to your existing phone wire for phone.  If the ONT is far from an existing connection point for either, then the technician will need to run new coax and/or phone wires.
The Verizon router connects to the in-home coax network.  The coax provides both the WAN connection to the ONT and a LAN connection that is used by the set-tops.  In home computer equipment connects to the router's WiFi and wired Ethernet ports.  The router can be located anywhere with access to a coax, power, and whatever computer equipment needs to be near it.
Verizon does have low cost set-top boxes.  You'll need to contact them for the details.
It may be possible to get two different models of DVR, but unlikely.  Note that Verizon supports multi-room DVR, so you could put them in different rooms and be able to access all recordings on both DVRs.  Another solution is to use IR remote sensors on both boxes and locate the sensors far enough apart that you could point the remote in different directions to select which box you control.
It's impossible for anyone on this forum to know how they'd do the install at your home.  Your best bet is to read more info on the web (on Verizon's pages as well as places like dslreports) and talk directly to Verizon.
    Good Luck.

  • New FIOS Bundle Installation Questions

    Hi all,
Currently a TWC customer and have been using VZ "wireless" for internet.  Our 2 story Home was set up 16 years ago with 3 each POTS (for hard line phones, Home alarm and dial-up) and 3 each coax hook ups for cable TV. We now have 4 TVs, 3 computers and 3 smart phones running.  The Wife said enough and wants FIOS.
I prefer eithernet for internet access with wifi available.  Looked into the MOCA thing a few year back with the old actiontec and was not impressed.  VZ site says I have Gateway 300 up/down available to our address with all the other  stuff.
I have 1000' CAT6A plenum cable, 700' quad shield RG6 solid core plenum coax, tooling and most connectors needed to upgrade the house.   http://www.swhowto.com/ is a site I found helpfull though out of date on the tech.
Any and all advice is requested regarding aditional equipment, bridging (if that's still needed) and issues to avoid before I commit this project.
    Thanks.

Assuming you will subscribe to one of Verizon's triple play bundles (Internet, TV, Phone) w/Quantum TV my recommendation is to:
    1) A new ONT should provide MoCA 2.0. Unless you plan to use COAX for Internet access you really don't need to swap out any MoCA 1.0/1.1 splitters (if in your configuration) for MoCA 2.0 splitters.
    2) I recommend using an Ethernet connection to the ONT for Internet access. This enables you to integrate a 3rd party wireless router (I have the Linksys WRT1900AC) with your home network.
    3) A standard FiOS home install w/Quantum TV will include an Actiontec Rev. I wireless b/g/n GigE router. You will need this router to initially install/activate your service with Verizon. Once established you can replace the Actiontec router if desired. However you will need to, at minimum, configure the Actiontec router to provide a MoCA IP bridge to any Verizon DRV/STBs to support certain MoCA/IP based services (e.g. Program Guide, Video on Demand, etc.).
    4) You will need to rent as many DVRs/STBs/CableCARDs from Verizon for the number of TVs you want service to.
    5) For Quantum TV you have to rent (1) or (2) (at max) VMS1100 Media Servers. Each VMS1100 should be connected to your primary TVs and is equipped w/6 tuners and provide DVR service and network connectivity to other TVs. Client TVs require either a IPC1100 or CableCARD to receive FiOS TV programming.

  • Mac mini mid-2011 display issues 1920x1200 on a HDMI monitor?

Just puchased a mac mini and am challenged by the display settings.  When I first powered it on using either a display port to HDMI or supplied hdmi to DVI (then the monitor's DVI to HDMI cable), the display is severly off center with issues seeing the system bar on top and icons on bottom.  So, once I was able to get to the System Panel, I found that it configured itself to 1920x1200.  I cannot get 1080p to center and 1080i has grainy text.  Does this mean I need another apple accessory, ie display port to vga?  Or is this an indicator that monitor and mac mini are incompatible?  Or is this an indicator that the mac mini has a lemon card?
(NOTE: I am downloading system updates to see if there is a firmware update. Thanks
    Proc - 2.5 i5
    Mem - 4 GB
    Graphics - Radeon 6630M
    OS - OX Lion 10.7.3
Monitor- LG L246WP  (3 hook ups: componet, vga, hdmi)

Your monitor has a native pixel resolution of 1920x1200.  There is no point in trying for 1080-p or -i.
I run two 1920x1200 monitors via HDMI (with passive cable adapters where necessary) and I use these choices:

  • Mini Displayport to HDMI Adapter Problems!!!

Okay so I have a MacBook Pro running OS X version 10.5.8.
2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo
And I recently got a Phillips flat screen tv with HDMI hook ups.
So naturally I wanted to connect my Mac.
So I went to Best Buy and purchased the Rocketfish mini displayport to HDMI adapter.
However upon connecting everything to my computer, nothing happened.
No picture came up on my tv, no sound, no change at all.
My computer doesn't even say there's a device connected.
Is there some sort of steps to setting it up?
I was under the impression I'd just have to plug it in and it would work.
Do I need to get another adapter?
    Please help!
    Thank you!

Took the MBP to the apple store. The display port works fine.
Embarassingly the tech pointed out the USB plug on the adaptor which I hadn't connected thinking it would be for another peripheral. Hey presto it worked!
    Red faced thanks!

  • How to output sound to RCA cables?

I give up! I can't for the life of me figure out how to output the sound from my Macbook to play on my stereo or TV which use RCA cable hook-ups.
I got the VID ADPT MINI-DVI TO VIDEO ADAPTER-GEN but that only adapts the video, not the sound. Do I have to get some kind of optical to analog adapter?

This would do the trick, although you can probably find something at Radio Shack for less.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=FFB 21895&fnode=home/shopipod/ipod_accessories/cablesdocks&nplm=TN779LL/A
I got an iPod kit with a power supply, extra dock, and a Monster Cable (yeah I think they're overhyped) mini jack to RCA connector.
There are a bunch of ways you can do this. If you've already got long enough RCA cables, these would do the trick:
    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103710
Or if you have a short distance, maybe something like this (doesn't say how long it is):

There are more attractive versions of this type of adapter. Radio Shack shows at least a dozen from different companies.

  • IPod wont be recognized on windows

I am helping a Friend out that doesn't own a computer and trying to add music to his ipod classic. I had to buy a new adapter for it to hook up to the computer b/c he only had charger hook-ups, the adapter I got is a GigaWare but doesn't seem to be responding. I downloaded iTunes and read all the manuals for both iPod and iTunes and it says I need to look for an Icon to respond to iTunes so I can be able to upload music to the iPod but it doesn't want to be seen. What am I doing wrong?

Neither of 2 iPod Shuffles (both 1GB) will allow version 1.1.4 software to install - various errors occur: "can't unmount", another user is using it, an unexpected error occurred (-147 or somesuch), and of all these, the last one most frequent and varied in timing (i.e. doesn't return immediately but takes between 10 seconds and 2 minutes to return error).
So the nicely buillt-in iPod Updated does download the appropriate software (cool!) but seems to hang up with the Shuffle with various errors. Tried the 5 Rs per ipod on support.apple.com, and also made Shuffle was only connected iPod, as there are 2 firewire-based 30 and 60 GB iPods, 1 60 GB USB iPod, a mini, and 2 shuffles. Lots of wires but all connected to a powered hub or two, so easy to disconnect. Nice wanrings on low USB power levels but just in case…

  • Printer will not make 4x6 size photos

I just bought an HP Photosmart 8250 printer and I cannot print the 4x6 size photos. The printer instead pulls paper from the letter size tray. I believe it is a problem with the computer because I was able to print a 4x6 photo with just the memory card in the printer and all hook-ups to the computer detached. As far as I know, I have selected the right size paper wherever given the choice. In Mac System Preferences however, I cannot change the "Default Paper Size in Page Setup" to a 4x6 size. Is this the root of my problem? If not, what is?

    Hi,
I think I might know how to fix the probem you are having. I too, just purchased an HP 8250 printer. I found that I had to go into the Advanced menu on the Print dialog box. Pick "Paper Type/Quality" and choose the Photo tray. The default is the "Main Tray" which typically holds your 8 1/2 by 11 paper.
That should have the printer pull from the proper paper tray (4x6 photo tray).
I am using the 4x6 Borderless photo paper that has a removable tab. (didn't now that until I bought it.) However, I'm still having problems getting the printer to print a true borderless print. The only way it will without giving me a white border on the left and right "landscape" or 4" edges is if I pick "Zoom and Crop" which then will do that to the picture.
If you are having that problem or if you know how to fix it, would you let me know. the one thing I am finding with this HP printer and my Mac, is that there are way too many steps when wanting to print a photo from your computer. It's a bit frustrating. I have yet to try printing from a memory card as I have always just printed directly from iPhoto. (previously used an Epson 1280)
    good luck!

  • Suggestion for a Video Monitor For FCP

I am looking for a video monitor to use with FCP. The Sony PVM-14L2 13" has been recommended. Is anyone familiar with this monitor or do you have a monitor which is working well for you that you would recommend.
    1) Should I be looking for anything key features not listed below?
    2) Will I need any other hook ups to make this work with my system?
(Right now I am using a JVC SR-VS30U Dual Deck. A firewire from the computer to the deck and component from the deck to to t.v. the deck also has s-video)
    3) When I move into High Definition will this monitor work?
Key Features of the Sony PVM-14L2 13"
    Variety of Input Options
The monitor accepts composite, S-video, component and RGB signals standard without options. Serial Digital signals can be viewed with the optional
(with audio) or BKM-120D (without embedded audio). Even
, Sony's version of Fire Wire can be displayed with the optional BKM-155DV board.
    Beam Current Feedback Feature
In studio environments, monitors tend to be left on for long periods. This practice leads to white-balance drift and unstable color reproduction. The Beam-Current Feedback circuit corrects for drift over long-term usage of the monitor.
    Professional Set-up Features
Calibrating monitors assures that each display is showing correct colors which will match any other correctly calibrated display. The PVM-14L2 has set-up functions like Blue-Gun, H/V Delay, and selectable color temperature for these critical calibrations.

Sounds like a great choice as long as the size works for you. A small truly high-res monitor is much more useful than a big impressive soft one for analysis monitoring.
    1) I don't think you need anything else unless the JVC thing doesn't work out. In that case you can try your camcorder, or a capture device such as ADS Pyro, Matrox MXO, or one of the Aja or Decklink cards. Depends...
    2) JVC SR-VS30U - I don't know, there are a lot of devices that won't simply pass FireWire through, including many or most DVD recorders. Your best bet is to try it and monitor it on whatever you have.
If you're on NTSC you'll have to pay attention to the black setup. Many consumer digital devices these days won't put in the 7.5IRE setup for North America.
That's OK as long as you aren't using it to do analog conversions. If you can get FCP bars through the thing and set the monitor up properly to them, you should be OK. I'm sure the monitor can be set to 0IRE in menus if need be.
    3) It won't show you an HD signal. If you're using the MXO it will give you a realtime SD downconvert to monitor. But that monitor won't display anything but NTSC and PAL. If it did I would probably say that 13" is too small.
