Hooking 12" PowerBookG4 up to Television

What adapters do I need to hook my 12" PowerBookG4 up to my television so that I can watch movies?
Also, will I be able to use the television as a monitor once it is hooked up like this?
Thanks for the help!

Given those specs, you will want to buy the Apple video adapter for your model that has an S-Video connection on it, then use an S-Video cable to plug it into the S-Video connector on your TV. This will provide the best available picture on your TV from your PowerBook. You must also plug a 1/8" stereo cable into your PowerBook and run it to the RCA audio inputs on the TV. Check your TV manual to find out which audio input pair goes with with the S-Video input.
While your TV has a higher quality Component connection, I don't think there is a way to get Component out of your PowerBook, so S-Video it is. Don't bother with the AV (composite) video ports, they are lower resolution than S-Video. S-Video should be more than good enough for playing back DVDs, Internet videos, and slide shows.
But if you were planning on using the TV as another computer monitor, prepare to be disappointed. Good computer monitor resolution doesn't start until you have a TV with at least a VGA and preferably HDMI connection. The best you will do with S-Video is probably around 800x600 if you want to keep computer UI text readable, maybe 1024x768 if you're lucky (which would match the LCD on the PowerBook 12"). But don't take my word for it, when you get the cable keep turning up the TV resolution in the Displays preference until you can't read the text.

  • Mini-DVI to DVI Adaptor HDMI Cable Question.

    Hello All,
I have a mini-DVI port on my white 2008 macbook. I recently bought the Apple mini-DVI to DVI adatpor, hooked up to a DVI/HDMI Cable, which hooks up to my television, a 32 inch Sony HDTV. The TV seems to recognize the connection as the desktop shows up on my television, however there are no icons, it is just my background picture on my computer. Even when I am surfing the internet or playing a video, there is nothing that shows up. I have tried it with 3 different televisions, and used my roommate's computer and hooked it up to different televisions, with no luck.
Does anyone have any idea why I am just getting the background picture on my computer on my television, without any icons or anything else showing up?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

  • Mac Pro to Samsung HDTV - "Mode not supported"???

Alright, so I have just received my new Mac Pro in the mail yesterday and wanted to hook it up to my television - a 1080p Samsung (Samsung LN-T4671F) HDTV. I am using a DVI-to-VGA cable. I feel I should probably explain the entire situation so that it's all clear.
The first time I started the computer after plugging it into the TV, the Apple logo with the Loading, spinning thing (not the multicolored wheel) showed in beautiful 1920x1080. After loading, the screen jumped to a lower resolution for a second and then went black, finally giving me a "Mode not supported" error. Thinking it was just a little hiccup, I restarted the computer and after the Apple logo screen, it showed me a screen on how to put batteries in my mouse (or something along those lines, I didn't really look), and then it had me set up my wireless keyboard. After this, it showed me the WELCOME video and allowed me to log on to my computer and start using it.
After about 15 minutes, I was going through the system prefs and came across display. Thinking maybe I should lower the resolution to better see text, I clicked on a lower resolution around 1600xsomething. The screen went black and gave me the "Mode not supported" error again. I thought I could just wait a few seconds and if I didn't confirm the resolution, it would go back...but it never did. After trying to restart my computer a number of times and receiving the error message each time, I booted in Safe Mode, which I am in right now.
I went into the sys prefs and made sure the resolution was set to 1920x1080, which it already was, and restarted the computer. Error again. I went into the settings of my TV and went to PC and had it auto correct the resolution to the input. Error again. I have been running in Safe Boot since - no sound is annoying - and enjoying the display in full 1920x1080 (1080p)...so the set obviously supports it (and the manual says it does too).
My video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT. What's most annoying is that it's pretty obvious that the display supports this resolution and yet won't allow it to work outside of Safe Boot mode.
    Please help

Had the same problem with an AOC 1080p TV, trying to connect to it using VGA cable.
Ivan's earlier post clued me in to solution:
    - Plug in the TV, get the "Mode not supported" message on the TV
    - Open the Display Preferences, you should see the display preferences for the laptop "Color LCD" monitor. Click the "Gather Displays" button - this should bring the display preferences for the TV behind the laptop preferences window. Switch to the TV's display preferences window.
    - In the TV's display preferences window, switch refresh rate down to 59.9 Hertz (your TV may need different refresh rate, but on mine I only get options for 59.9 or 60).
    That did it for me!

  • Scrolling and selecting text with a bluetooth mouse. (Possible bug?)

I currently have an Apple Keyboard and Magic Mouse hooked up to my Playbook. They work very well, the implementation is incredible. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to scroll with the the mouse. It really limits the PB since if I hook it up to my television I cannot scroll unless I have the PB near me. Has anyone gotten this to work or is this something we are hoping to get in a future update? Aslo, is there a way to select text and bring up the copy/paste menu without having to use the touch screen? I can select text by holding shift / arrow keys on the keyboard but am unable to perform any actions without having to use the touchscreen.
    Thanks!

Hold on there, @jnko -- are you saying you can scroll with the mouse (as in, use the virtual scroll wheel), or are you saying you can use the mouse to click on the document in, say, Word To Go, and drag it to make the screen scroll?  I can only do the latter, and, like you, can't scroll at all in the web browser.  Stinks that this wasn't fixed with the last update...

  • Mini displayport question?

I have a mac book pro 13" 2009. I want to hook it up to a television that uses RCA composite plugs (might be able to go the s video route as well).
On my G4, I was able to do this without any problem. Now, I see that apple only sells mini display port to either VGA or DVI. Is there any way to do get one of the mini displays that apple makes to go to s video or RCA using a third party adapter or something? Kind of weird that Apple doesn't make this adapter for the mac book pro.

Since you need to convert the signal with more than just an adapter this is the best and most cost effective way of doing it.

  • Media Center

Hi everybody. Sorry if this topic doesn't quite fit here. You can redirect me if there's already another discussion about this going on.
I am in the process of doing a major overhaul on my home entertainment system. Getting some new speakers, a TIVO, etc...
One possibility I had in mind involves the colleciton of divx/avi/mp4 files I have. I've thought about buying a Mac Mini and hooking it up to my television so I could watch these files. A few weeks ago, though, I bought myself an ibook and tried hooking it up to my television using the same kind of adapter I'd be using with the Mac Mini. I was pretty disappointed with the quality - especially with DVDs. The playback is jittery and the color is all washed out.
Now I'm wondering if what I need is the Elgato Eyehome?
Maybe someone else here is using a Mac Mini for the same purpose and has some ideas about how to improve the picture quality?
    Thanks.

I have my mini utilized in just such a setup. Mine worked just fine when I connected it, but there are a couple things you can try. First of all, make sure that the display resolution is as close as possible to the TV's native resolution. For standard TVs, you'll want to set it to one of the lower resolutions, such as 640x480. In the case of an HD TV, find out it's resolution and adjust the mini's output in System Preferences to match. As to the washed-out problem, you could create a custom color profile using ColorSync Utility (In the Utilities folder under applications) and adjust the gamma, brightness and other settings to give a better picture. As to jitteriness with DVD playback, you could try a different player, such as VLC Media Player. Aside from that, I don't know - DVDs play fine on my Media Center Mini. Remember also that the mini is a different system from the iBook, and may have different characteristics when connected to a TV.

  • DVI to CRT???

I just got a Mac mini for Christmas and want to hook it up to my television as a media center. My TV is a 27 inch Toshiba CRT. I'm using the DVI to Video adaptor with an s-video cable from the Mac to the TV. Out of the box, I booted up, got a picture and worked my way through the system set up. Got to the desktop, opened up System Preferences>Displays and tried a different resolution. BAM! The screen starts jumping all over the place. At this point, I only have a wireless keyboard and I can't read the screen at all. I take the mini in to my local Apple store and the Genius there tells me to reset my PRAM. He demonstrates for me in the store and tells me I'll need to find a wired keyboard to make this work at home. I also notice that his LCD monitor is showing at least a dozen more resolution options than what I had for my CRT, so I know that the computer is talking to the monitor. Anyway, I track down a corded USB keyboard and reset the PRAM again at home. Still no dice. Getting very frustrated and feeling very stupid. HELP!

You can probably get a "sane" picture by starting in "Safe Mode". Using the the wired usb keyboard, hold down the Shift key for about 30 seconds, immediately after hearing the starting up chime or beep.
Starting in safe mode will take a bit longer than normal, and some services such as WiFi won't be available. But it should put a basic resolution up on the screen that will work with the TV, while you experiment with tweaking System Prefs > Displays.
BTW, I'm curious ... was there anything wrong with the picture that you initially had, before you went to display preferences?

  • 5.1 or 7.1?

I am planning on building a new computer system soon and will be using it for gaming, listening to music, burning music and movies and eventually hooking it up to a television for recording to dvd on the pc and playing dvd's from the pc on the tv. I realize that alot of this is video related and I won't even get into that yet as I want to deal with one thing at a time! I have already decided on the Soundblaster X-fi platinum 7.1 sound card and am considering the creative Inspire T7900 speakers (these don't seem to be out yet in North America... any ETA on availability?) My main question is - is there any noticeable difference in sound quality between 5.1 and 7.1 I am hearing alot of issues with the 7.1 speakers and am thinking that maybe I should just go with 5.1. Any other info or website links would be most appreciated as this analog/digital and tv-to-pc stuff is completely new to me

  • HP m8430f stuck on "Starting Windows" after April 10, 2012 Microsoft Updates

HP m8430f stuck on "Starting Windows" after April 10, 2012 Microsoft Updates.  Upgraded to Windows 7 X64 from Vista X64 almost two years ago.  Have never had any problems until morning of April 12th.  I will cut to the final resolution to help anyone else who is going through this or will in the future.  After trying to repair Win7, restoring back to factory recovery (got code purple), installing clean Vista 64 and trying upgrade to Windows 7 again, formatting drive using /p:2 option of writing 0's twice to whole drive and then doing a clean install of Win7 only to get to the same place of being stuck at "Starting Windows", I tried a trick I had read about.  Boot to safe mode, you will get an error that you can complete install from safe mode. Don't close window but hit Shift-F10 and a cmd prompt will open.  Type in compmgmtlauncher and choose Device Manager.  Disable the Visx PureTV-U 48B0 under Sound, Video and Game controllers.  Reboot computer and Win7 complete installation.  Since I was able to get into Safe mode back on April 12th, I should have tried disabling everything then, but since it was working without problems before the updates, I couldn't believe that it was any of the devices.  I have not been able to get around this issue with the tv-tuner, but I don't have a need for it right now for it.  I saw a tip to try moving it to another pci slot and I will try that if I ever have a need to open the computer.  Just wanted to document what to do to save others weeks of searching.  If this is a driver issue, I can't believe HP or Windows hasn't come up with a more current driver.  During all of the installs, I never get a yellow triangle for that device or any indication in Event log or anywhere that there was a problem with this device.

I had a similar issue with mine not working properly running Windows 7 Ultimate.   Mine was working just fine for quite some time and then I moved my system into our TV room and hooked it up to the television, and used it there.   Everything worked fine, I then returned it to the normal location but did not plug the IR sensor back in.
I had issues with it, I then plugged it back in and it seemed to be working fine, then started to freeze while we were working on it, it would do this all the time.  I was thinking I had virus, I tried restoring windows to a previous working state.  Upgrading my Virus software and everything.   This was all back in October 2011.  I finally just thought my system was going out after a number of years.
Then the other day for some reason I moved the IR sensor from one plug to the other.  It is currently plugged into the bottom right USB port next to the RJ45 port.   It seems to be working just fine now and I don't have the device you suggested disabled, though I will keep that in mind.
Thanks for you post, Hope mine helps too.

  • Tv cables

    Hey yall,
I was wondering if there is a cable that I can hook to my video out port on my iBook so I can hook it up to my Television. If there is can you tell me what it is called or a link to a website that would have one?
    Thanks in advance,
    Luke

This would depend on what type of output ports your iBook has.
You could more than likely discover this within the documentation that came with your iBook. There are many different converters for video cables out there on the market.
You would be able to find these converters at either your local Apple Store or even a location such as Radio Shack.
    Hope this helps.

  • Sync problem converting videos with SU

Hi there. I have owned my Creative Zen Vision:m 30gig player for about 2 weeks now. So far I have really come to love this device. I have learned how to put album art on all my favourite albums with ?Album Art Downloader? and I am using Media Monkey to manage and sync my mp3 files from my pc to my Vision:m. I have even loaded all my photos onto the player and bought the accessories pack so that I can hook it up to my television ? it works perfectly.
My last challenge (so far) was to figure out how to make this video thing work as I have about 00 videos which I have downloaded from Google video via a plugin for Mozilla Firefox called ?Video Downloader ?. The videos from Google video are encoded into something called a .flv file. I have done A LOT of reading here and other places on how to convert the various formats into formats the player can understand. Apparently the program ?Super? is THE thing for converting almost anything into well anything. I tried it and found out I could select ALL of my videos and select a common setting for them all to be encoded into. My first reaction?. sweeeeeet! The videos did not seem to have lost much quality and when I loaded them to the player, it would play them nicely? or so I thought.
It did however slowly but inevitably become clear to me that despite my most fierce attempts of denial? there was a sync problem with the audio. Not a huge annoyance but still an annoyance, something which I knew I couldn?t li've with. I therefore rushed to the program and tried to shuffle the settings a bit, changed the codecs changed the containers but nothing would work. The sound sync problem would still be there, lurking. The problem was also present when converting high quality xvid movies.
This is where my creativity and patience has come to an end. This is where I give up and crawl to you begging for help. I in order for you to help me, I will try to help YOU recreate my scenario.
I have a video, perhaps a little morbid, where the sync problem is very obvious after you have converted it with super, here is the link http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7233445036972827652
I use a plugin for Firefox to download videos from Youtube, Google video, etc. called ?Video Downloader?, here?s the link
    https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/
The settings I use for Super are the following:
Output Container: Avi (For Pocket Pc)
    Output Video Codec: Mpeg4
    Video Scale Size: 320*240
    Frame/Sec: 25
    Bitrate: 336
    Hi Quality: ?Checked?
    Stretch It: ?Checked?
    Sampling Freq: 22050
    Bitrate kbps: 28
Ok if you manage to download the clip from google video (easy) AND convert with Super into a format fitting for the Zen Vision:m without the sync problem? well my joy will break any ?happy-meter? out there
Ps. I did actually find a way to fix the sync problem, I checked the ?Directshow? for the ffmpeg but the picture was sort of lagging and looking REALLY ugly so that actually created a problem much worse than the previous one.
Thank you for your time and patience

I am not sure I can help you but I do have one pice of information. The sync problems arise from converting to the wrong frame rate. If you can choose the frame rate for the videos you convert to then you can test different rates and find the right rate. Keep in mind that there is currently no way to determine the approiate frome rate without teting it.

  • IMovie back to VHS: Broadcast quality? Need quick answer

I have a short film that can very well see television broadcast in the next few weeks.
I need to know what is the absolute best quality compression settings for this.
It has to be 720x480 (NTSC). Can I get away with just about any setting (I primarily used a 720x480 Quicktime setting, it's gotten the best resolution), and have it come out virtually the same quality as seen on a desktop?
The other problem is I worked on it in an 720 HD setting by mistake, so now there's black borders. Can I copy/paste the work into another project with only the frame size changed?

+So explain this to me: why does the .264 setting look way better than a NTSC or just about any other resolution on my screen? I'm inclined to think that given the proper frame rate (29.97) set, .264's resolution is going to look like gangbusters on a video tape.+
Video tape and television work very different than your computer screen, and you cannot use your computer screen to judge how well a video would look when played back on television. For starters, TV is interlaced video, but a computer screen is progressive scan, and so is H.264. To get a H.264 onto television, it has to be converted into interlaced video. You'll have a quality loss right in that step.
Do you have a DV camcorder? Export your video to DV, then hook it up to your television, and watch it there. Then start a new iMovie DV project, import your H.264 clip, export it to DV, and compare. If you provide a H.264 clip, it has to go through a similar conversion at the TV station before being broadcast.
You mentioned you accidentally started in 720p. If you really care about optimum results, I would start all over, with a DV project. By going 720p, you introduced two extra conversion steps into the process: importing and converting your source material into 720p format with black side bars, then cropping back to 4:3 and exporting to DV format. Every time you go through a conversion like that, you loose a little bit of quality.
