Hooking a 110v imacg5 to a 220v socket...

I bought an ibook g4 and an imac g5 in mexico, where i live, but now im studying in Argentina, and these guys have 220v, and we have 110 in mexico and usa. i know i can hook my ibook with no problems, and i bought my imac a transformer but the thing heats like **** itself. i was just thinking on hooking my imac right with no transformer but i thought i should ask first here :P I think the answer is obvious but who knows, im just tired of having to use my imac for like 2 hours and then wait other 2 hours so the transformer cools off.

Actually, Ewen, this doesn't really have anything much to do with the speed of electricity. Rather it depends on the speed at which particular components fail due to the application of excessive power / heat. If component A connects through to component B and both are susceptible to overload, but component A fails before component B does, then component B will probably escape damage. If, however, Component B is less able to sustain the overload briefly than Component A, then both will probably die in a situation like this.
This principle is employed extensively in a device called a "fuse". Fortunately quite often overload on a power supply will result in its own failure, before devastation occurs further down the line. In some cases, of course, protection of this kind may be deliberately built in to the device or circuitry, or its own design may be such that an output overload is simply not possible,."
It tends to be "as fast as lightning" Rod, as with the case with Barry as soon as you plug it in you hear a bang/ pop and a damaged computer, but as I said in my Post he should investigate the extent of the damage, to see if any internal components have been damaged, and this is the work usually best left to a professional. However, if Barry has some experience with this type of thing, and can isolate the problem to the iMac Power Supply ( a little more complicated than a mere fuse I fear, Rod), then it is possible for them to replace it themselves, see .pdf below:

I will use my 110V MacBook in the Philippines which has 220V sockets. Will the World Travel Adapter Kit help me?

Assuming you're in North America now, you probably won't need any sort of plug adaptor there; most sockets in the Philippines are the same as those in North America. In case you do, it doesn't contain the correct adaptor.
Voltage conversion is handled by the MacBook without any additional components.

The Magsafe autoswitches based on detected power.  You will likely need a wall adapter to alter ther US-based 3-prong to whatever is used in China.

    Hi,
Before go out to buy a converter/transformer  (you need over 2KW for all 3 of them), please check the switches at the back, they may have switches to switch from 110V to 220V. I don't know your market, my suggestion: talk with an electrician who knows the real world much better.

  • Can I use SCXI 1000 (110v US model) in 220V 50Hz country?

Somebody is selling SCXI 1000 with couple modules to me at a very good
price. However, it is a US model(110V) while in my region we use 220V
50Hz.  Can I use a fransformer to convert 220V to 110V and use
with this chassis? Are there any know issues? This will be used for
hobby  projects. Not a mission critical task
    Thank you.

    just4fun,
Let me start my response by saying that most likely there should not be
any problems with using a transformer.  If I were you, I would
purchase a voltage adaptor that also changes the frequency of the power
supply from 50 Hz to 60 Hz.  Neglecting to change the frequency
could cause problems in some devices that have power supplies not
intended for 60Hz VDC power (this could lead to a noisy DC power line).
With that said,  the newer SCXI chassis can handle the different
voltage levels without a voltage adaptor, but you are supposed to
change the fuse inside the power supply to a lower amp fuse if you
switch from 110 to 220.  You should be able to determine what
types of power you can connect to the scxi-1000 (110V/60Hz or
220V/50Hz) by reading the labels on the back of the SCXI chassis.
If the labels on the back of the SCXI chassis make no sense, feel free
to reply with the info from the labels in an email and I can help you
    decipher them.
    I hope this helps,

  • Wrt54gp2 -- using 110v in country with 220v

I purchased a universal ac/dc adapter set to 12 volts, positive polarity, and a "load current" of 1000mA in order to run my wrt54gp2 in Israel.  After i plug it in, the power light will flicker for a few seconds and then go out.  Based upon my rather limited knowledge about this kind of stuff, it would appear this is the correct adapter and the settings are right (fact is I tried two different brands of adapter ... and two different adapters of each brand).  Anyone know why this wouldn't work and are there any other solutions as to how get this thing to power up.Thanks?

    Hello all,
I want to use my 110 V Air Port Express (US Version) in Europe at 220V.
I know, that the sticker on the Express module says "110V".
I also found the tech specs, which state usage from 110V to 240V (http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/specs.html)
And, I know that my power supply for my MacMini says 110V on the sticker as well, the tech specs state 110 to 240 V and it indeed works fine with 240V.
I ASSUME that the airport express will be just fine - but it would be nice if someone could confirm. No need to fry more devices than nescessary....
the express will handle the power issue quite well. however, i'm not sure if you don't run into problems with the channels it is broadcasting on. from the AX tech specs:
    Channels
+Channels 1-11, 36-48, and 149-165 approved for use in the United States and Canada+
    +Channels 1-13 and 36-64 approved for use in Japan+
    +Channels 1-13 and 36-140 approved for use in Europe+
+Channels 1-13, 36-64, and 149-165 approved for use in Australia, Hong Kong, and New Zealand+

  • 110v or 220v? Which Gives Quality Electricity, Run Cooler Better?

Hi. The iMac having a maximum wattage of 350w, would it be better to plug it in a 110v outlet or a 220v outlet. Which outlet has cleaner electricity/less noise and which will make the iMac work better, last longer or operate better. Which will save money? I heard 220v is better for hight powered gadgets and appliances, at 350w, is this iMac a high powered or a low powered machine? Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

120v is the normal house voltage in the US and 220v is the normal house voltage in the UK.  I can't imagine that Macs in the US vs Macs in the UK last longer based on these values.

  • HT201177 I have my macbook pro hooked up to my Samsung tv via HDIC.  I have good video, but no audio.  Can anyone help?

I have have my macbook pro hooked up to my Samsung tv via HDMI.  I have great video but no audio from TV.  Only what is coming out of my computer,
Never mind, I lreferenced some other posts with the solution.  Thanks anyway!

Only MacBook Pro's from mid-2010 onwards support audio through the mini-DisplayPort.  You will need to hook up a cable from the headphone socket to the TV.

  • Will iphone charger work with 220v?

    Hi Folks
My iphone and accessories was bought in the US
but i need to know whether i can plug it in to charge from a 220v socket, overseas?
    Thanks!

Yes, the charger is rated 110-240 volts at 50-60 Hertz...all that is needed is a plug adapter...available at a lot of international airports.

  • HT4060 Can I use my 10 watt charger overseas or to a 220 wattage ? This for iPad 3

Have iPad 3with 10 watt charger - can I use this overseas (Philippines) with 220 wattage?

Technically, there is a difference between a convertor and an adaptor.
Adaptor - changes to plug configuration to match the socket
Convertor - changes the voltage from 220v to 110v
Most, Apple chargers are 100-240v, so you would only need an adaptor.
Check your charger, if it's only 110v then you will need a convertor. Plugging a 110v only device into a 220v socket will burn out the device.

  • Going to Australia and need help with Power converters

    Facts:
    US uses 110v on 60hz
    Australia 220v on 50hz
Making sure I understood that correctly.  Devices I plan on bringing that will use power are PS3 Slim, MacBook Pro 2008 model, and WD 1TB External HDD.  My DS, and Cell are charging via USB to save trouble of other cables.
Ideas I've had or thought of:
    1.  Get a power converter for a US Powerstrip, and then plug in my US items into the strip and then the strip into an AUS Converter into Australian outlet.  Not sure if this fixes the voltage/frequency change.
    2.  Get power converters for all my devices.  But, not sure if my devices needs ways of lowering the voltage/increasing frequency or something to help with the adjustment.
    3.  Buy a universal powerstrip, which is extremely costly and I wouldn't be able to have here in time (I leave Thursday).  Unless Best Buy carrys one.

Check the specs on input voltage/frequency of your power supplies.
Many laptop power supplies are "universal/global" and are specced something like 80-265 volts AC 50/60 Hz, but not all.  These will just need a connector adapter.
Unsure about the PS3 Slim - if it isn't universal it could be difficult as you'll need a 110/220 transformer, one big enough (power-handling wise) for the PS3 will be very bulky.
For the external WD HDD, if it doesn't have a universal supply, you're probably best off just finding a new wallwart for it that is capable of running on 220/50.
