Hooking all my components to surround sound
ok, i bought a sony home theater system with surround sound. the problem is i can only hook up 2 compnents to the system because there are only 2 inputs, the standard rca type audio input and an s-cable input. doesn't someone make a product to defeat this. in other words something that i can hook all my audio inputs into and then hook this into an input on the surround system and then choose whatever i need to input into the system. any feedback will be much appreciated. Terry
the home theater system is a Sony DAV-DZ175 which has the dvd player built into it, i have my Blueray player already hooked into it via the optic cable, (not an s-cable) but I have a dvd-vcr component and a gaming system (Wii) that i would like to try and hook into the sound system, occasionally i use my laptop on the tv and would like to get that hooked in also if possible.

How do i hook my ATV through my surround sound and then to my TV?
Hi,
I have just bought a Samsung HT-Z120 to play music and video with my ATV through my TV. However i have a slight issue connecting everything together harmonously.
Currently i have 3 RCA components connecting the TV to the Samsung HT-Z120 (surrond sound system) and a HDMI cable connecting my ATV to my TV.
I need to connect the ATV directly to the surround sound but the connections i have left on my surrond sound and ATV are an optical output on the ATV and a audio out and video jack on my surround sound. I know this is a silly question as one is fibre optic and the other is analogue, but is there anyway to connect all this together?BPERRO wrote:
No unfrotunatley there is no HDMI output on the surround, neither is there an optical. All i have is 2 rca point and 3 rca component point. I bought it second hand thinking it was a good deal, however i now realise my mistake.
Im not sure im going to be able to make this work, unless there is a magic answer involving the two remaining audio jacks from the surround.
Thanks for both of your replies...
The Apple TV only supports HDMI and Optical Output. I took a look at your Samsung product specifications online and it is a bare bones unit. You will not be able to connect the Apple TV to your Samsung product. -
How to make itunes play through all 5 of my surround sound speakers?
Hi,
I'm new so hello everyone
Received some very nice 5.1 surround sound Logitech x-530 speakers this Christmas and they are absolutely brilliant. I tried them with a DVD and the surround sound is really good. However, I can't seem to get all the speakers to play my music through itunes, i.e. only 2.1 stereo sound is played through the 2 front speakers and subwoofer. I understand that this is because MP3 is recorded in stereo sound and so only plays through 2 speakers, but I'm hoping that there is a simple way to do what is described in a similar thread here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=817792󇪀
The answer to my problem is described as "Rear speaker cloning", i.e. playing the same music through the rear speakers as the front. However this is from almost 5 years ago so I'm hoping that there is now a clearer solution to my problem- could I even solve my problem simply through itunes preferences? Or do i need a specific program/driver?
My "Soundmax" sound card came bundled with my ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus mobo, if it's any help.
Many thanks in advance. I would really appreciate any help or advice.Hi

X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook -no surround sound
All of sudden my surround sound is gone! Maybe it's due to some recent updates from microsoft, but system restore won't help.
Anyway I got Inspiron E705, genuine vista 32, pcie sound card with 5./7. adapter. When I go to control panel - sound - configure, my configuration is 5. and it checks out just fine after hitting the test button. (sound appears in each speaker) However, when I want to play mp3s or movies on vista, the sound goes only through two (left and right) front speakers. Any ideas on how to fix it's
PS. sound driver - up to date (from their website 7/4/2007)That is perfectly normal functioning for music playback unless you select CMSS Surround mode. Set the slider for 50% (middle) and you will get sound out all speakers. For monophonic sounds or music, you will get almost no sound at all out the front left and right, most sound out the center, and a bit of sound out the rear surrounds for spatial effect. This is at least how my Extreme Gamer card works.

Supposed "Surround Sound" on HP HDX 18T Notebook
I purchased an HP HDX 18T notebook several weeks ago. The sound when I played DVDs was terrible, virtually inaudible when I was sitting only three feet away. I returned it for a replacement. The new laptop is much louder but it is still far from offering the "surround sound" I was promised in the company's advertising. Is there any way of enhancing the volume of the speakers when I play DVDs? Is this an manufacturing flaw in this series of laptops? I have owned much cheaper versions of HP notebooks and they have had much better sound systems than this much touted "entertainment center." <text deleted>
Thank you.

Message Edited by WendyM on 03-22-2009 12:39 PMI find that all that so-called "surround sound" on a laptop does nothing but make the volume lower. If you want to watch a movie with better sound, it's best to use a home theater setup, or at least a good set of powered external speakers on your computer.
The problem is that computer makers fall over themselves to provide sound features that seem good on paper...but not in real life.
Thje way I got around this problem is by downloading Media Player Classic (available at Afterdawn.com). It doesn't even have to be installed. Just run the program, and click file, open DVD. The movie will play in glorious (loud) stereo...as long as you have another DVD playing program on the computer to supply the codec. After all, what good is 7.1 surround, if you can't hear the dialogue? -
After connecting my Apple TV this morning, I have no sound. It is hooked up to play through my television speakers. Any ideas on how to get sound? Also, I tried hooking it up through my surround receiver, but could not get it to come up on my ty screen, what can I do to correct this problem?
Have you tried adjusting the "Audio Out" and the "Dolby Digital" settings in settings > audio and video? It may be worth trying several combinations of these settings, although typically it is the "Dolby Digital" setting that causes most problems for users.
Also make sure that you have correctly mapped the input port on your sound system to the output, if you are unsure about how to do this, refer to the manual that came with your sound system.
Have you tried playing various content sources (i.e. podcasts, music, iTunes Store video, other video etc), do you have the same problem with all types of content? If you use optical you might also check that you can see a red light at the end of your optical audio cable. Is your optical audio cable plugged straight into your sound system, or does it go through a switch or other device? -
How can I hook up my Sony surround sound to Apple TV to watch streaming videos?
How can I hook up Apple TV to my Sony surround sound to watch streaming video from Netflix?
Which Apple TV is it?
There should be outputs you can use for video/audio. The latest Apple TV has HDMI out. Find the correct cable that matches your TV and follow Sony's user manual to hook everything up correctly. -
How to get Surround Sound 7.1 output out of all speakers?
Hi all... I moved my system from Ubuntu recently and am having one small issue that I haven't been able to solve; everything else is working great and I'm about ready to move all of my other systems to Arch also, once I've solved this. :-)
The one nagging issue I'm having is with sound. This is a fiber digital connection that was working on the ubuntu install and a couple other distros I play with, but I haven't been able to find the issue in Arch. Sound comes out of only the front-left and front-right speakers. When I do the sound test, it lists all of the other 7.1 speakers, but no sound out of anything other than the front 2 speakers. I noticed that I don't have an asound.conf, so I was wondering if that might help or if it's not needed with Arch?
sound.conf contains the following:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
/proc/asound/cards contains:
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf9cf4000 irq 22
arecord -L shows:

HDA Intel, ALC1200 Digital
IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output

Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
If anyone has any pointers, it would really be appreciated. I'm begging for help. ;-)Thanks! - those were 2 of the url's I've been looking through (in addition to the alsa faq, some stuff on the ubuntu, gentoo and xbmc forums).
I've setup an asound.conf and am about to give that a test.
--edit--
Well, that didn't solve it. I'll have to keep trying. :-(
If anyone has managed to get surround sound working out of more than just the front 2 speakers, I'd love to hear how you did it. ;-)
Mine is connected via digital, so it's beginning to look like I need to set spdif up somehow.
But... Now that I think about it, it 'should' be pretty easy since all I basically need is for it to force all raw audio out the fiber digital connection since the receiver actually handles all of the decoding (dang....it worked great in Ubuntu, now if I can just figure it out in Arch). LOL
Thanks!!

Hooking up MBP to home theater receiver: Surround sound for games?
I'm looking for a way to hook up my MBP to my home theater receiver to play games in surround sound. From what I've read, it sounds like the digital optical out will only provide 5.1 sound for DVDs, not games.
I have also read about the Griffin Firewave which supposedly provides 5.1 sound from the firewire port...however, it looks like there are five separate outputs from that device (center, and both front and rear speakers), and my receiver's inputs are not arranged in this way, so I don't think this will work for my setup.
Anyone know of a way to do this successfully? It's looking like it's not possible, but wanted to see if there were any solutions I was missing. Thanks!Peep this...http://www.forums.bestbuy.com/bb/board/message?board.id=TV_Home_Theater&thread.id=1153

How do I turn on surround sound (5.1) for all my iTunes items?
In iTunes, while a video is playing, I can go to Controls/Audio and Subtitles and select English (Surround Audio). This allows the sound to work with my 5.1 Dolby Digital audio setup.
It looks, though, like the only way to turn this on is to actually be playing the video. I have gone into iTunes and selected a whole set of videos, then selected the surround sound - but that didn't work. As soon as I played a video I hadn't played before, it was back to stereo, and I had to manually make the selection again. (Now, once I make the selection it sticks; I don't have to do it again. But, I still have to do it for each individual video.)
How can I "turn on" surround sound for all items that have it?1. Double-click the Home button and swipe Task Bar to the right
2. Check the volume and mute settings

Can't get surround sound to work, all speakers pl
This is driving me nuts.
I have surround sound speakers and everything was working fine with them and my SB audigy card.
However I had to move the card over one pci slot to make room for my video card cooler.
After doing this I uninstalled the card/drivers and reinstalled them and what not.
However now I have no surround sound. I simply get sound from all the speakers the same.
I run the speaker test through the surround mixer/audio hq where it goes through each speaker to test it. The sound on that comes from every speaker even though it shouldn't. However my back right speaker doesn't have anything come from it during this test, but it plays sound from everything else.
I have both the surround mixer and windows set to use surround speakers, etc as it should be.I fixed part of my problem.
I must have hit the rear wire or something because it was loose and I plugged it all the way back in and now my surround works how it should.
However the rear right speaker doesn't work right. I don't know why but it's like someone has the volume specifically turned down on it (like literally 98% down) only and the other speakers are normal.
However if I move the rear right speaker (on the subwoofer) an dplace another speaker in it's place, it will work fine. So it's not so much that speaker as it seems to be specifically the subwoofer connection for the rear right speaker. -
Can I hook up my apple tv to my surround sound system, but keep my regular tv hooked up to the surround sound as well?
If your audio amplifier has multiple hdmi imputs, you can connect the apple tv to one and the tv to another.
Works well for me, and now I can mirror itunes to get the new itunes radio on the music system, and have the tv system also work.

Hi mikefrompoland,
For more information about 5.1 Surround Sound in iTunes, you may find the following article helpful (it is primarily aimed at Mac users, but the settings in Windows should be similar):
Setting up iTunes and your DVD Player for digital surround sound

Note: For surround sound to work, the content being played must be encoded to support it.
