Hooking An Electric Guitar up to Garage Band 3 on Intel iMac

This question probably seems a little basic, but this is my first mac since the Mac 128's and I'm not sure where I'm going wrong here.
So basically, I want to hook my Floyd Rose electric guitar up to my intel duo core iMac for the first time. This is something I've done in the windows based world forever - and I figured it would be just as easy if not easier on the mac. No luck so far.
So here's what I've tried:
First: Installed my M-audio JamLab and tried plugging the guitar through it. Everything installed ok, but then the control panel icon for the jamlab tells me it can't open with my current version of MacOs, and selecting the jamlab as an audio input in garageband preferences doesn't give me anything. After a bit of research, I'm guessing this is just the fact that m-audio hasn't updated their jamlab driver for the intel macs yet.
Ok ... next:
Tried running through my PodXT Live into the mac. Same problem - no updated intel driver yet and the current one doesn't seem to work.
Ok, lets try the low-tech solution:
I plug the guitar into a 1/4" to 1/8" stereo to stereo adapted ( even though the guitar is mono - its all I had ) - I then plugged it into the line in jack. Again nothing.
So the question is - what can I do to plug my guitar into my intel Imac at the moment? I noticed that maudio has some devices with beta drivers - do those work?
As for plugging the guitar straight into the computer - I also noticed that standard 1/8" jacks seem to be too long to fit into the mac's line in and line out jacks ( or maybe they would fit if I pushed them in really hard - but I didn't want to risk it ). Would I need an audio preamp to do this? Would the guitar cable on apple's store work any better?
I'd prefer to go with the USB solution if possible - but so far 2/2 mainstream devices didn't have working drivers.
Any advice?
I thank you!

If you want to go the USB or FireWire route, you need to check with manufacturers to make sure they have updated drivers.
To effectively use the Line-In you need a preamp of some kind. Some folks have used effects boxes/pedals.
BTW, the 1/8" plug should fit in the jack, there's nothnig special about the jack that I know of.
Finally to use the Line-In:

  • Guitar recording in Garage Band, 2012 MacBook Pro 13"

I hope someone can point me in the right direction here...
I bought a brand new 2012, 13", MacBook Pro a few days ago for a number of reasons, but the main being music recording. After purchasing I realized there is no LINE-IN on the new MacBook?! I browsed a few forums to find that others are having the same issue I am.
I decided to buy a chord called a Lightsnake, that is a 1/4" guitar jack on one end, and USB on the other. However, there is a slight delay between when I pluck a string, to the audio coming through my headphones. It makes the chord unusable because I can never layer tracks perfectly.
Does anyone know of another solution that isn't going to run me a few hundred dollars that will allow me to record my guitar into Garage Band? I'm still within the 30-day return policy, and if I cannot find a reasonable solution I'm going to have to upgrade to the 15" MacBook Pro, which comes with the line-in?! (Which is a whole separate annoyance for another forum post)
Please Help!! This is my first MacBook after being a Windows user forever, and I'm already questioning my decision.
Thanks in advance for any help.

First of all, let me welcome you to the Apple world, where the grass is always greener on this side. Don't question your decision, you made the right choice.
    Regarding your question:
    Solution 1: external
You can use an external audio interface via the USB bus. There are plenty to choose from in any price range. The more expensive ones provide a lower "latency" and I think that is the problem with your cheaper Lightsnake device. It has a built-in analog-digital converter in it and that must be not that good of a quality which introduces such a high latency (the time needed to do the digital conversion) that you can hear it.
    Solution 2:
It seems that many users are not aware that the newer MacBooks have a "double duty" audio port. Unfortunately, it is labeled with a headphone icon which points to an "audio out". However, this port can be used as ad audio out (Sound Output) or audio in (Sound Input). You set that in the System Preferences > Sound window
With a 1/4" to 1/8" cable, you could connect your electric guitar directly into your Mac. Check the input level meter in the System Preferences if your guitar signal (or other audio signal) is high enough. Although the quality might not be the best (compared to a good external Audio Interface), I would bet that the analog-digital converter (ADC) are better that your Lightsnake cable, resulting in a much lower latency
    Hope that helps

  • HT4710 Where do I find previously purchased guitar lessons on Garage Band?

I've just tried to redownload a previously purchased lesson from within an updated Garage Band.
It did aknowledge that I had already purchased the item/lesson and, as it usualy did with the songs from iTunes a few months ago (just before iCloud), it asked me if I wanted to repurchase the item.
As I had no other visible way of redownloading the lesson I pressed the ok button.
The problem is that, afterwards, it did, in fact, charge my credit card for this redownload. As a matter of fact it did charge my credit card twice since I did click the button a second time few seconds after, as I wasn't sure that everything was right.
So now, I've paied 3 times for the same lesson:
    - 1st one, the 9th of January of 2010.
    - 2nd and 3rd, the 11th of August of 2012.
Does anyone know how can I redownload all the lessons I've purchased back in 2010?
Since I've updated to the latest version of Garage Band (sold through the App Store) I've lost all of them. What can I do?
I know Apple aknowledges the sell of those (anyway I have the invoices), but I can't find any of those applestore purchases I've made prior to the last 18 months (I'm refering to my Apple Store Account > Orders page)
And since now we don't have Express Lane anymore I'm in a deathend!
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Have you already tried this?
GarageBand: Re-downloading Learn to Play Artist Lessons
To download a purchased Learn to Play Artist Lesson again later:
Log in to your Apple Store account and vIew your order history.
Click any lesson to download it again.
For me this worked beautifully. After signing into the account and viewing the Order history, I found Sting waiting for me to download again.

  • Using an electric guitar

What is the standard way to hook an electric guitar into my computer/Logic based home studio?  Is a preamp needed?
If I plug directly into the Apogee One using a breakout cable, won't there be a delay if I'm running thorugh logic?  If so when, does this latency become an issue?  I'm confused about this.  Can I pratice live plugged in directly like this and hear what I'm playing as if I was plugged into a guitar amp?  Or will the delay be present?
What about recording and monitoring?  At some point there must be a delay issue requiring a different set up I would think.
I absolutley do not want to mic a guitar amp.
    Thanks.

    First thing..
    Go here:
    http://help.apple.com/logicpro/mac/9.1.6/en/logicpro/usermanual/#chapter=2%26sec tion=0
    Read,  "Configuring your Audio Hardware"
Pay attention to the System I/O Buffer setting, this is where you will control/balance the amount of latency vs. the amount of CPU overhead.
You should be able to do everything you mentioned using the Apogee 1.
I can't emphasize how important it is to read Logic's manual and the manual that came with the Apogee and it's Maestro control applet. There are two ways you can monitor. Using the "Direct" hardware monitoring of the Apogee (Dry) or through Logic's audio engine, including Logic's effects. If you can run the System I/O buffer at 128 you will be getting the latency low enough that you may not notice it. 64 would be even better but at some point you will push the system beyond its capabilities. Monitoring will be done through the Apogee's headphone speaker jack. If you learn your system you will find that everything listed can be done with the Apogee.

  • How to get full sound library for Garage Band

I recently purchased the upgrade for Garage Band on my 06 iMac.  I received a huge library of sounds with the upgrade.  However, two days later, we had a power spike and I lost that computer.  So - I bought a New MacBook Pro Retna with the latest version of Garage Band on it, however, it is missing what seems likes hundreds of real instrument sounds.  Any suggestions?  Can't seem to find a way to downlod all thode extra great sounds like strings and sound FX.
    Thanks.

I recently purchased the upgrade for Garage Band on my 06 iMac.
What kind of upgrade did you buy? Jam Packs for GarageBand, like "Symphony Orchestra"? They are not included in the preinstalled version that comes with a new mac.
it is missing what seems likes hundreds of real instrument sounds.
Are loops missing or instruments? If loops are missing, do they appear to greyed out in the loop browser? If they are greyed out, have you pressed the little arrow to the right of the loop name, to download the additional content?
To be able to download the additional content, you have to accept the preinstalled iLife to your AppleID at the AppStore. Sign into the AppStore, go to the "Purchased" tab - "Accept" section, and press the "Accept" button for your iLife apps.
    Regards
    Léonie
If it are the JamPack, that are missing, post back please.

  • Ipad 2 to iMac Garage band track transfer

Hi, is there a simple way to transfer my ipad2 garage band tracks onto my iMac and Vice versa.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what I did. Alternative products and apps may be available but this worked for me
    Purchaces:
    iRig Midi (physical device)
    MidiBridge (app)
    Configuration:
Connect the midi out of the Yamaha DTXplorer to the midi in of the iRig Midi
Connect the iRig Midi to your iPad
Now, here's the bit that made me think it was worth writing this post. The DTXplorer doesn't support custom midi mapping and it uses different midi notes than those used by GarageBand for iPad. To get around this you need to remap the incomming midi on the iPad using an app such as MidiBridge.
In MidiBridge, connect the iRig input to the MidiBridge output
Select the config icon on the iRig input and apply the Note Mapper. Here is what you need to remap to get things working
    Bass Drum: A0 (33) -> C1 (36)
    Low Tom: G1 (43) -> F1 (41)
    Mid Tom: B1 (47) -> A1 (45)
    Snare Drum: G0 (31) -> D1 (38)
The rest are mapped properly by default
In MidiBridge, you might want to save the configuration
Open up GarageBand and drum away!

  • Is there some sort of adapter that i can use to plug my electric guitar into, so that i can record music into garage band?

Is there some sort of adapter that i can use to plug my electric guitar into, so that i can record music into garage band?

Probably but for that kind of expertise I would ask the experts in the GarageBand forum.

  • What products are available to connect a electric guitar to a IPAD 4 for use with garage band???

what products are availabe to connect an ipad 4 with electric guitar for use with garage band???

I know this will sound a bit snarky but the best source for information is an Internet search. Typing in "connect guitar to iPad" produced pages of products. This one looked interesting to me...

I don't recall if the iPad 4 has the new lightning connector or not. If it does you'll probably need a  30pin-to-lightening adapter.
