Hooking an external wifi antenna to a new mini?

I am looking at putting a mac mini in my new camper, my old camper had a G4 tower witch I installed a PCI card that I could hook an external (outside) high gain (15db) antenna) to so that I could get internet in the camper. The new camper has a very small desk and I want to get the 23" LED display mount it to the wall and hang the new mini on the wall next to it so that I have plenty of desk space, how would I connect an external antenna to it? USB? Thank you, Mike

Wouldn't it be simpler to get a router that accepts antennas rather than cutting a hole in the mini case and soldering wires?
My old SMC barricade had detachable antennas, I removed one of them and plugged in a signal booster and high gain omnidirectional antenna.

My iMessages were always automatically synced with my  6 monthold iPhone 4S. However the phone recently had to be replaced by apple because of a faulty wifi antenna. The new phone was restored from backup. It works fine but iMessage no longer syncs with my ipad. I've looked into the settings and can't see anything wrong? I can iMessage from my phone and iMessage from my ipad but they don't synch. Very frustrating. Would appreciate some help. My nearest spple store is 30 miles away. Thank you so much.

  • So I am trying to hook up a wifi antenna and router to pull a signal in for better hookup and when I turned on asus I must have answered a question wrong on setup so how can I change stuff so I can get iPad and router to work.

So I am trying to hook up a tired net antenna to an asus wifi router so my iPad can have a stronger signal, but when I turned on asus it went to auto window on iPad and I think I must have answered a question wrong. I can not hook up to Internet, can anyone tell me how to configure, or delete asus and start all over.

Have you tried erasing your network settings under settings/general/reset?

I have an existing mini mac and 4 tb external drive.
My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...
I have purchased a new mini mac and I want to leave the library where it is on the external drive but move to new mini mac and have it show as it did on the old mini mac..
what do i need to do ?
I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
    Thanks

I had already tried that one and got this...
below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?

  • Moving to new Mini, what to do with existing Airport settings

    Hi Everyone!!
I'm picking up my new Mac Mini this afternoon (my older one is now in year 5!). The question I have is, what is the best way to hook up my Airport Express for the new Mini? Since I don't expect to use both computers on my wireless network, I'd like to simply use my Express (used exclusively for my Canon wireless printer) via my new machine. Do I do a reset to factory default for the new Mini? I have just one 23" Cinema display, so I assume I will not be adding the new Mini to the existing network, but starting all over with installing the software from the disk and setting everything up from scratch. Or, is there a possibility of adding the new machine to the network after unplugging the older computer, with the Airport settings intact? With Airport Express still plugged into my UPS and active, is this feasible?
    Thanks

One question comes to mind: You mentioned no need to install the Express disk on the new Mini, simply join the network. As I will only use the Airport network for my wireless printer -- my internet connection is via an ethernet cable connected to an ATT U-verse router -- will I have any need for the Airport utility that's on the disk, the same utility on my old Mini? What if I need to check on my settings after I disconnect my older Mini. I know, maybe a stupid question.
    hi jim,
your new mini will have the current (as of the date it shipped) version of airport utility installed. the settings are on the express not in airport utility. you manage the settings on the express with airport utility.
you shouldn't run into problems. if you do, you still can pop in the disk and install the software that's on it.
and you can always post back here

  • Is it possible to replace the internal wifi antenna in a itouch 1st gen with a stronger internal wifi antenna from a slightly newer model, such as a 2nd or 3rd gen itouch?

Is it possible to replace the internal wifi antenna in a itouch 1st gen with a much stronger internal wifi antenna from a slightly newer model, such as a 2nd or 3rd generation itouch?

That is not very likely as the antennae are different physical designs and fit will be an issue.

  • Possible to view presentations with embedded clips  on the ipad from an external wifi  drive?

    Hello,
first of all I am happy to have joined this community, my name is Chris from Germany.
I am wondering if this setting is possible:
I have bought an external wifi drive (Seagate Satellite Goflex) as well as the iPad4.
I am giving lectures (powerpoint and keynote presentations containing lots of embedded video clips).
Now I would like to show these presentations with my iPad connected to the Wifi drive.
You have to download a special Seagate App on the iPad to be able to see the data on the external wifi drive - I have managed to open the powerpoint files in the App (unfortunately keynote files are not supported by the Seagate App) but when I open them with keynote or goodreader the embedded media will always be removed.
Is this the end of the story or are there any solutions (i.e. with other hardware devices or software)?
Have a nice New Years Eve and thanks in advance,
    Chris

    yes and no ...
    I have figured that out:
First of all: you can`t just view presentations on an external device without importing them into your iPad (at least when you plan to show slides with embedded clips) - goodreader, filebrowser, dropbox ... just show you "static" slides.
When you import a ppt-presentation into keynote all the hyperlinks, embedded clips ... are gone - no chance.
But ... in keynote you are able to "embed" video clips when you drag and drop them directly into the slide alowing "copy video into the document" as well (that is "vital") - the files are getting larger but you don`t have to add a clip when you transfer it to another device (i.e. the iPad) - they are "fixed" in the document..
Now seagate goflex has the problem that you just can`t open/view keynote presentations - but there is a solution:
hacksatellite firmware. When you install that you can go into keynote, activate WebDav, import a keynote file from the external drive, edit it and send it back to the external drive - so: import (can`t live without that), show or edit the presentation, copy it again to the external device and delete the presentation in the iPad (to save storage) is the way you can get the optimum from the iPad at the moment.
Correct me if there is any other more comfortable solution.
    Thanks for your reply Daniel,
    Christian

  • After replacing wifi antenna wifi is still dimmed/greyed out.  Bluetooth works fine.  How do i fix this issue? Could there be another part that needs replacing?

my wifi was greyed out so I replaced the wifi antenna.  I just put the new one in and restored the ipad but the wifi still is greyed out but the Bluetooth works fine.  What could the problem be and how can I fix it?

This article offers some suggestions which may help: iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
This likely has nothing to do with your router.

  • Homebrew WiFi Antenna (Proper Cable, LMR-195 GR-58?)

    Hey,
I don't know if this is the best forum for my questions, and if not please direct me to one that better suits my needs. I was simply referred to this forum through another one. Anyhow, me and my friend are attempting to build our own wifi antenna and after searching google for a while we have come up dry on a couple things.
1), From the wifi card we wish to attach a cable that will be say 25-50 ft in length which will then attach to the card's reg 3 inch antenna, pretty much extending the antenna from the card. What is the best cable to do this. Originally we were told to use GR-58 50 Ohm Coax cable however after reading further we found that would only be good for 3-4 ft before it pretty much "spills the connection all over the place". We were then recommended to use LMR-195 or better though what type of cable is this as it does not seem to be supplied by Radio Shack. The question is what cable would you guys recomend that could hold a wi-fi signal 25-50 ft from the end of the antenna on one end back into the wifi card on the other, and where can we purchase it?
Thanks in advance and if this is not a good forum for these questions please direct me to another. As time goes on we will build our own antenna but right now we want to get the reg antenna to work over a decent length of cable.

OK. Understood. You have a massive challenge ahead of you. Also be warned that an external antenna that is not properly protected and grounded can be a fire and safety hazard, and that it can accumulate enough of a static charge in dry, windy environmants to blow up your system (not so much like "boom" , but static electricity is deadly to most semiconductors).
Next, you may want to study on how to make a BALUN / UNUN because the WiFI stuff is 50 Ohm impedence, and your average TV antenna is 300 Ohm (assuming it's a classic LPDA - Log Periodic Dipole Array).
An LPDA for TV will have some elements for ~50 MHz, 260 Mhz, 512MHz, and if it's also a UHF antenna, it might be good up into the 900 MHz ranges. LPDA ware pretty wide spectrum, and you'll probably luck out and hit a harmonic somewhere.
You'll need to craft a 6:1 balun, not that big of a deal actually. Shop some of the amateur radio sites (like aesham.com) for materials or to just buy a 6:1 BALUN.
The Gain of a typical ~ 6 ft LPDA could likely provide enough gain to make the system work =-->IF<--= the cabling is very high quality, the cable termination is nearly perfect, your BALUN is efficient enough, and you don't lose too much signal through the protection system (that would be the protection system against lightning and static ... includes a thingy called a "lightning arrestor" that in no way, form, or fashion could do anything to stop lightning).
By the way, you'll want to bring that TV antenna down and clean every connection on every element. Any noisy junction will kill your signal.
All-in-all, the cable shouldn't cost you more than a couple hundred dollars, the materials for the BALUN another ~US$10-20, connectors another US$20-50, protection elements, maybe another US$25-100 depending on who and what you go with.
Here's a link with some good info regarding wireless signal propagation, 802.11, and antenna stuff.

  • Antenna Number of New MacBook Air

    Hi,
Since new MacBook Air supports 802.11ac, i'm wondering how many antennas in it, e.g., 3*3? or 4*4?
    Thanks.

The macbook AIR has, im almost certain a Fractal Antenna, meaning ONE antenna which uses its geometry for equal reception on 2.4 and 5ghz...............UHF antenna can be easily made for very broad spectrum reception......heres a pic of the WIFI card in the new AIR

  • Wifi antenna for N70 or any S60

    Hello
Is anybody know something about a project of a wifi antenna for the N70 ?
I must not be the only one to have this need ?
    Thanks

the n70 doesnt have wifi. not all the s60 phones do right now.
when it comes to needing an external antenna, its not needed. the phone has a built in antenna that is capable of getting connections to wlans very well - i have test this on mine, at work i can get a connection anywhere on my floor...
given the way wlans fluctuate, if you are having connection problems it probably isnt down to the way the phone is poicking it up - it is probably down to the signal of the wlan

  • We have the itouch hooked up to wifi but can't access email

we have the itouch hooked up to wifi but can't access email or app store - is there a router setting (which is an open system, no passwords or log in needed) we need to address? We can successfully use safari, but anything with a password seemigly is  no go.  This is using a new iTouch 8G that I bought for my Mom yesterday.

We got our son's working yesterday. It didn't dawn on me until many hours later that I kept giving the router password instead of the Hex key for the I-touch password Entry. We had to supply the Hex Key. We use WEP as a security mode and both password and Hex key are in Hexidecimal format. I hope this helps you and saves you many hours of headaches.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

My phone is full of pictures, and will not download anything, until i store my pictures somewhere!!

If you don't remember your restrictions passcode, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode and restore it using iTunes. Do NOT restore your backup. The restrictions passcode is part of the backup.
Everything on the phone will be lost.
You can extract the photos from the camera roll the same way you would from any other digital camera. Having a restriction passcode set should not prevent that. do that before you put the phone in recovery mode and restore it.
