Hooking iMac to external display when LCD is broken

Per the Genious bar people at the Apple store, the LCD display on my iMac is broken.  She told me I could hook it up to an external display and use it or I could get it fixed.  I decided to hook it up to an external display, but from searching other forumns, it looks like it is only extending what is on my desktop and not mirroring it because all I see is the background of my desktop, no icons.  Apparently, I need to go into System preferences and change something.  How can I do this if nothing is showing on the iMac LCD display?  Is there a shortcut key on the keybord or something?

CMD F1 was the keyboard shortcut....

  • 3000 C200 Switch display when LCD is broken - SOLVED

I want to install windows but it is automatically diskplaying on the built-in screen (which is broken). What keystrokes do I press in BIOS? (I've tried F9 -> Enter -> F10 -> enter to no success).
The ubuntu install disk works but I don't want to use Linux on this machine.
    SOLVED: Press power and wait 3-5 seconds -> press F1 -> right -> down -> enter -> down -> enter -> F10 -> enter.

Okay, let us move on. Disconnect the external monitor, remove battery from the laptop, unplug laptop cable for a few minutes, put everything back on and press the following combination in the this exact order: Fn+F3+Caps. If that does not help either, try to perform steps from this thread: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/G555-help-enable-external-display-from-BIOS/t...

  • IMac 24¨External display no longer working

I have a Intel iMac 24¨using an additional external display - Fujitsu.
It has worked perfectly since I bought it and suddenly the external display will no longer work. There is nothing wrong with the Fujitsu because I have tested it on other computers but will no longer work with the iMac.
I have checked all connections, running current update and I am now at a loss as to what to do next.
I read that there were problems linking external displays when the iMac 24¨came out but I am assuming that this was resolved long ago. Even so, mine has worked fine until now. Any ideas please?!
    Thank you

    Hi Canaryguy
    1. Shut everything off display, computer and disconnect everything.
    2. Reset the iMac's SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    +● Shut down the computer.+
    +● Unplug the computer's power cord.+
+● Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.+
    +● Release the power button.+
+● Attach the computers power cable.+
+● Press the power button to turn on the computer.+
    3. Now first reconnect the DVI or VGA cable to the Display.
    4. Then connect the Mini DVI to ??? to the Cable coming from the Display.
    5. Lastly plug the Mini-DVI adapter into the iMac.
    6. Then turn the Display on and startup the iMac.
If that does not work try a different Mini-DVI to ??? adapter and cable, or test your adapter, cable and display with another iMac.
If all of the above fail, then the iMac needs to be serviced.

  • How do I set MacBook to an external display when the plug and play doesn't recognize it?  I am trying to set my Samsung 530 LCD as a monitor but HDMI and VGA cords (and the adaptor for them) doesn't seem to work.

I have tried everything I can find on line but they all claim that the plug and play works, and they don't for me.  I tried the mini dvi to HDMI and a HDMI cord and that was not recognized no matter which unit I rebooted first.  I found someone who said that my Macbook might be too old for the HDMI technology so I returned the cords and went to the VGA cord and adaptor.
I tried this first with the HDMI setup:

Then I tried this with the VGA setup:
    http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx= 167901&modelname=LN40C650L1F&modelcode=&session_id=NDhJrD0DQT0Z8KRsm62yhxJxqnyPy SKhlhpB8vQ6h9Q7R2BZJGzj!-1089109758!1761676444!7501!-1!434477884!1761676348!7501 !-1!1292098185857
I contacted Samsung support and they said I needed to set the display settings to external display on the mac.  I went to the display settings and moved the icon to my status bar.  When I click on search for displays or whatever it says (I'm not at my Mac right now) it does nothing.
    What am I missing?

I am using MAC OSx 10.5.8 (9L31a) as my operation system.  The TV says "No signal.  Check connected device's power, cable connection and source selection."  Seems to me that that goes in hand with what the Samsung tech said about the Mac needing to be forces to use the external display.  But how do I do that?

  • IMac G5 iSight detects external display when none is connected

    Hi,
I purchased an old 17" iMac G5 iSight,in which the screen sometimes suddenly turns to blue and the resolution drops as it detects a VGA display even though no external display is connected. It even shown two displays in the preference panel.
I opened the iMac and checked the capacitors which look okay. I reinstalled the OS and it didn't fix the problem.
Do you have some idea where to look? Or does someone know how to disable external displays?
I found this discussion from another forum: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/172427
...but it's ubuntu so I don't understad what they're talking about?

Make sure that the PRAM battery is under 4 years old.
    Then zap the PRAM.

  • Using iMac as external display from Macbook Pro flickers static and crackles.

I'm trying to use my iMac as an external display.
When I plug in my early 2011 Macbook Pro into my Mid 2010 iMac via a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, the iMac screen flickers with static and there's random crackling noises.
Weird thing is, when I try the same thing with a new Macbook Air, everything works perfectly!
    Here's a quick video demonstrating what I'm talking about - http://youtu.be/xxTXVRffWwE
Are the two not compatible or do I just have a defective Macbook Pro? The Macbook Pro works fine with the Cinema Display I have in the office...

Huh, It should work like this:
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    iMac Model
    Cable Supported
    Port on Source Computer
    iMac (27-inch Late 2009)
    Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort
    Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt
Actually that table seems illogical. The cable supported is mini to mini display but the port says "or Thunderbolt"
Does that seem contradictory to you?

  • Using iMac as external display with MBP, can this be done?

    I know...
This has been posted before, but I have as of yet not found a straight answer. Mostly peoples recommendation is: "Buy a display".
However, I have an older iMac, 20" and I have a newer MBP 15". The MBP has a faster graphics card, better processor and more RAM. But I still like sitting at the table using my iMac, because the comfort of working is better this way.
Now seeing that I have both, is it possible to connect the two, and use the iMac for a display? Preferably without having to buy a whole lot of expensive cables, applications or do strange hacks risking hurting myself or my computers
    Thanks all
    Have a nice day

but I have as of yet not found a straight answer.
I think you are getting the straight answer. You need "buy a display" because a display has a video input port. An iMac has a video output port, but NO video input port. Therefore, you cannot use it as an external display, like a regular display.
You could give the iMac a video input using a USB interface device, but the cost of such a device that would provide good quality video into the iMac would cost about the same as (or more than) a low cost LCD display. And it would probably not be ideal in terms of performance.
You could also use this clever program to use a fast network connection and VNC to display the MacBook Pro's second screen on the iMac screen.
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
In your case, the program will create a virtual screen for the MacBook Pro and shares it with the iMac in much the same way as the +screen sharing+ feature. Disadvantages are relatively slow image refresh rate (because the signal is going over the network) and the need to have the iMac turned on and running separately. The speed part will not be that bad in your case, if you use a Cat-5e or better Ethernet cable to connect the two Macs, so that you will have gigabit speed. You can give it a try at no cost to see if it is an acceptable solution (in time-limited demo mode).
I use this program to give my iMac a third display. The +third display+ is an old PC laptop running Linux (Ubuntu).

  • Using iMac as external display on MBP (Lion)

I'm trying to use my 27" iMac as the external monitor for my MBP, both running Lion.  I saw an article (support.apple.com/kb/PH4469; seems to be unavailable now) and said I just need to hit command+F2 once the computers are connected (using thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable). However, Command+F2 doesn't appear to have any effect.
    Please advise.
    TIA,
    David

  • Using iMac as external display, keyboard, mouse

I would like to use my iMac as an external display, keyboard, and mouse for my windows laptop.  Is there a gizmo that will allow me to do this?
When I am using my work computer (windows laptop) at home, I prefer to have a full size display, keyboard and mouse and would like to see if I can use my iMac for this purpose.

No, not unless your Windows box has a Thunderbolt output port which it almost certainly does not. Please carefully read Apple's Target Display Mode 2011 Macs that extplains.

  • Connecting iMac Keyboard to Macbook Pro while using iMac as external display

I'm trying to using my iMac wireless keyboad for my macbook pro while my iMac is in external display mode but I can't get the keyboad to connect. I've tried disconnecting the wireless keyboard from my iMac but it won't go into target display mode without the keyboad. Can I used my iMac wireless keyboard with my Macbook pro while my iMac is being used as an external display?

No, not reliably.  If it's paired with both machines you can turn it off and turn it back on but it's a toss up which machine it will connect with.  If you took it to another room so the iMac didn't see it, you'd have to disconnect the minidisplay port/thunderbolt cable and then it would exit target mode display.

  • Using 2011 iMac as external display for new Retina macbook / port sharing question

I'd like to see if there is a way to use the firewire port on the back my 2011 iMac 27" when it's connected to my 2014 15" Retina Macbook.
The two work fine right now - the iMac is the main display for the macbook, but I wanted to know if there is a way to utilize the extra ports - namely the firewire port on the iMac through the Macbook. I've created aggregate devices before - would this be the way to go?
    Thanks!

    Hello gstern1994,
Yes you can. Form the article below you should be able to do that, just make sure that you plug in those devices when you have already set up the Target Display Mode on the iMac.

  • Can I substitute an external display in place of broken powerbook screen?

Water was spilled on my powerbook titanium and now the backlight doesn't work. This is fairly expensive to replace, but the computer appears to be working fine (from what I can tell using the dimly light display).
Instead of replacing my screen which would be costly can I just use my powerbook as a desktop and attach it to the external display? Without seeing whats on the screen can I setup my computer to use the external display as the main output (mirroring)? I fear I might not be able to do this without the GUI provided by the screen.
    Anyone ever done this?
    Thanks.
    Powerbook G4 Titanium 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, you should be able to do this no problem. You don't need the GUI. Just close the lid on the TiBook, attach and external monitor and then use and external USB keyboard or mouse to wake the system. Leave the lid closed at all times. And leave the AC adapter attached. Should work fine.
