Hooking keyboard up with MIDI?

Hey,
Sorry, I am a noob at MIDI...
I have a Yahmaha E403 Keyboard. It has a MIDI USB port on the back. My friend has the same keyboard and was succesful using it on Garageband.
I went to this site where I found the latest driver for Mac:
http://music.yamaha.com/products/downloads.html?productId=1212
I still cannot get it to connect. Even in apple system pref when I click on the Yahmaha icon, it says alert, cannot access to a driver.
I didn't have a midi usb cable, and my friend told me that the cable for your printer should work. So I took my printer cable and it fits into my keyboard fine and my mac book pro fine. Can the cable be the issue?
On my keyboard there are three settings,
• PC mode: off
• PC mode : PC 1
• PC mode: PC 2
My friend said with Garageband, he got it to work with PC mode off, and then just lower the keyboard audio and then you can hear it on the computer speakers.
The only difference with him and me is I'm using a different midi usb cable, and a slightly older model mac book pro. But we do both have mac book pro's and the same keyboard so it should work?
What could be the problem?
Thanks
- Mike

We are both the same OS and he isn't using rosetta.
I am running my keyboard off of batteries could that matter?
And is there a difference between a printer usb cable and a MIDI usb one? The printer one seems to fit fine, but maybe his printer cable is a different brand and just so happens to work.
I'm assuming most likely its my driver but it seems like it could be anything thats the problem.

  • Opinion on what to do with midi keyboard situation

So a few weeks ago I purchased a m audio axiom 61 midi keyboard to use with logic 9 on my mbp that is currently running snow leopard. I connect the keyboard through a usb cable and when doing so, the keyboard turns on but no noise comes out when I press the keys. When I hook up to the keyboard to any computer running leopard it works fine, the problem is only when I hook it up to computers running snow leopard.
The keyboard is class compliant so there are no drivers, updates, or software that will make it work. After searching all over the internet these past few weeks for a solutions and having a horrible response in terms of customer service from m audio I have basically lost hope in terms of having this keyboard work with my computer.
I am asking what you guys think the best solution is for this problem. I'm debating either having to purchase a leopard install disc just to downgrade so it will run with my computer or selling the keyboard and just purchasing another one from a different company that will work with my computer by default. Both of these solutions would be a nuisance and I'm not looking forward to going through the steps for either.
What do you guys think I should do, and if you have any ideas on what to do please let me know.
    Thank you.

I think we need to slow down here. You do not need to open Audio MIDI setup to test if the board works. Plug the thing in, open Logic, and simply look down in the transport window while you press some keys. You should see Note numbers flash just to the left of the CPU meters.
This is the critical step. CoreMidi is smart enough to know what is going on without even opening Audio MIDI Setup first. I do it all the time. I plug my M-Audio 02 keyboard in to the mac with a cable, and instantly get at least the notes coming into Logic in the transport as I described.
If you get the notes recognized, then your Axiom is fine.
As far as sound goes, that's a whole different story. You will get no sound in Logic unless you do several things first. I won't go into them all here, as I'm hoping you already know about going to the Preferences button at the top left of the screen and choosing Audio... from the list. Core Audio will come up and you can make sure you have Built-in Input selected since you don't have an external interface.
Then make a new track, choose a Soft Instrument, and a piano or something, and play away.
Audio Midi Setup control panel is for setting the SYSTEM's audio midi settings. Logic uses it's own settings. You need to set both to the same thing ideally.
But, say you get a firewire interface. Hook it up, go to Audio Midi Setup, you choose it as your choice of audio interface, and done....but Logic will still have Built-in Input set and you will hear nothing...so you have to again go and change it in Preferences > Audio.
bottom line, I use GarageBand as my test bed for things like this. It's a bit more "direct". The first track it puts in the line for you is a Piano...so you just plug the axiom in, and start playing.
Verify for us that you are getting note recognition in the Transport area.
One last thing - do you have a bunch of stuff plugged into the USB port with the Axiom? There is always the possibility there isn't enough bandwidth for the board to work if you have a scanner, iPhone, card reader, digital camera and keyboard/mouse all plugged in...longshot, but worth a mention.

  • I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. How do I get it to stop?

I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop? My sound is running through the Saffire Pro 40 Interface (Focusrite) into external speakers with powered amps.
Also, When I record I am hearing little pops in the system. I have checked all of my meters and they are not clipping. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop?

    Pancenter,
Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,

    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • Alesis Midi Controller Keyboard setup with Logic Pro 8

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me... I'm a complete newbie!
Recently bought a Macbook with Logic Pro 8 and would like to get set up for some home recording. The keyboard I want to use as a midi controller is the Alesis QS6 which has been in the wardrobe for some time. I have a Midiman USB midi interface.
When I connect it all up, I can't get it to make any sounds from Logic, only from the keyboard itself, which I don't want. A friend suggested taking out one of the midi cables so now I have only Midi out from the keyboard running into Midi in on the Midiman. When I play the keyboard the notes register on the Transport bar and I can even record them but I cannot hear anything.
Can anyone tell me what settings I need to have on the Alesis? Should the Keyboard Mode be on Normal, CH Solo or Out 1,2,3...16? I read somewhere I need to turn General Midi off, does this sound right? Is it something to do with midi channels - I don't even know how to tell which midi channel is selected in Logic.
If anyone has experience with using the QS6 with Logic I would love to hear from you!!!
    Thanks!

Run the Audio/MIDI Setup utility. Is your keyboard/MIDI interface displayed in there?
If not, OSX does not see your MIDI device. Install it's drivers if it has them. If it doesn't have any drivers, your MIDI config might have got hosed. What keyboard is it?
Unplug and replug it, directly, don't use a hub. Does it show up in the AMS utility now? Try powering it for an adapter, not from USB.
If you still get no joy, I'll give you some procedures to try...

Tsk tsk, Nigel, don't you see: this is a story - with a cliffhanger... he said he tried... but he never clarifies if he succeeded or not... but still, he has to do it. It's stronger than him, bigger than him, there's no escaping the step-input and midi-input via usb-keyboard scoring... it's fate I tell you! Fate!

  • Midi sync issues with midi keyboard

I am having issues with my midi keyboard being synced with logic pro.  I have it connected with midi and audio.  When I press play on logic the keyboard sounds will play but it sounds like it is a split second faster than logic.  Anyone know any fixes for this issue?

    There's several possibilities.
    1. It could be plugin related, do you have any latency inducing plugins on the master bus or as inserts on and of the tracks. Maybe I should ask what plugins you're using?
    2. In Logic's preferences/audio-Devices tab, is the "Recording Delay" slider set to zero? While your there go to the "General" tab, is the Plugin latency compensation set to "audio and software instrument tracks"?
    3. If you have Low Latency mode enabled, disable it.

  • Which keyboards work with garageband?????

I know there are special midi keyboards, but i want to get yamaha or casio that i can play when not hooked up as well. Do any of the casio or yamaha keyboards work with garageband... without having to buy additional hardware.

Yes, many! I have a Yamaha PSR-K1 that I have hooked up to my iMac, and speakers, and it will play thru either, including Garage Band of course. Some Yamahas can also play thru their own speakers. eg no hookup to anything else required, but you would best go to a Yamaha site, and post the question under CUSTOMER SERVICE to find the model. . I would think a good Yamaha dealer would also know the models??

  • Having problem with midi?

I am having problem with midi keyboard (korg pa80) I having hard time to midi to logic every time I have to either restart the logic or restart the keyboard or plug out the USB cable and put back in order to work. Plus when I created a new track doen't work with it. I have to do same as above to make it work? help please how can i refresh the midi connection with going throw steps above?

Is it the computer dropping the MIDI interface, or the computer connectin is fine adn Logic is not seeing it?
Run the Audio/MIDI Setup utility and make sure your MIDI device is present. If not, try another USB port, or don't use a hub.
Assuming the connection is solid, in Logic, option-click on File -> New and try it - if it works in that song, but not your own songs, it's a song specific issue, so check your MIDI input handling in the environment.

  • Yamaha Mo'8 live keyboard rig with MainStage

    Hi, guys.
For most gigs, I use a Yamaha Mo'8 whose sounds are perfectly fine for most uses, but I have an important gig coming up in February next year where I would like to harness MainStage.  Here is the equipment I would like to use.
    - Yamaha Mo'8: MIDI controller and 2nd sound source in case something goes awry.
    - MBP running MainStage plus NI Komplete 8 Ultimate, Spectrasonics Omnisphere and Trilian.
    - OWC hard drive enclosure running 2 TB Western digital 7200 hard drive.
    - Apogee Duet 2
I'm not sure what my stand is, so unless I know what make and model my stand is, I wouldn't be able to get a laptop extension for it.  It's important that the laptop has to be very close to my eyes because I'm partially blind.  If anyone can think of a good setup for mounting the laptop plus Duet and hard drive, please let me know.
In regards to safety, should I have a spare set of audio leads plugged in to the Mo' 8 that I can bring up just in case the computer goes down for some reason?
    Thanks,
    Damian.

I've been using a MacBook Air for keyboard performance with Mainstage for a few years now. I use the ES1, ES2, an EXS24, often along with Massive and Absynth from Native Instruments. I often use Guitar Rig on the channel strips as well, not to mention Space Designer and other Logic effects.
My air has 4 GB of RAM. And I've never had any problem.
The Air is great, because it's about a kilogram lighter than my old MacBook Pro, and it performs just as well. It also boots really quickly, which is a bonus.

  • Audigy 2 NX: EAX effects with MIDI playb

Is the Audigy 2 NX capabable of having the EAX audio effects work with MIDI playback? That is, when I "Enable Audio Effects" in the EAX console, I can hear the effects with wav and mp3 files but midi files sound no different. Is this a limitation of this product? I'm pretty sure I was able to do this with older sound blaster (pci) products. I've always connected my keyboards to sound blasters to make use of the sound font technology. If I could make use of the EAX effects, it would make everything sound much better.
If this is not possible, I'm curious as to why.
    -Thanks

    Hello
I have exactly the same error with my Audigy Player. I can remember, having used MIDI EAX effects with my old Soundblaster Li've!. However CD, Line and everything else works fine with EAX, why not MIDI? I think it's a bug and I am using the newest Advanced HD 4.0 drivers. If you turn your speakers VERY loud you can even HEAR a small amout of chorus and reverb. But the Sources are up to 0.0 db and 00 %. So there has to be much more of it!
I don't know of any solution, yet. It's really frustrating, because MIDI playback is one of the primary things I had in mind when buying this junk audio card.

  • Problem with midi on my Macbook pro

Ok, so i've been having this problem for a while now...i came on the forums before and asked about it, and people said to get more RAM...so i've done that...
Before I thought it was a CPU issue, but now i'm realizing it has something to do with MIDI.
I have Pro Tools and Logic on my computer, and whenever I load a MIDI instrument into either program, the CPU usage goes way up...way more than it should. I don't know why this is happening. Right now I only have one piano loaded in Pro Tools and it's taking up so much CPU that the sound cuts in and out. In Logic, the CPU bar goes all the way up.
Does anyone have a solution for this? It's got something to do with the midi...if i bounce the midi track to make it an audio track it works fine. Also, if i restart the computer or close & open the program again it tends to work a little better for a limited amount of time...
I'm running a 2.2 Ghz 2007 Macbook Pro with 4 GB Ram that i recently put in. I have a lot of the MIDI sounds on an external hard drive, but both the external sounds and sounds that are on the computer itself have the same problem.
    Thanks,
    TJ

  • Can't open a new tab with the + for tabs. Can open with Mid mouse button. Nightly.

When I click The + to open a new tab in Nightly, it does nothing. I can open new tabs with mid ouse button, or right click>open in new tab. Just cant open a new tab via the + button. Started 3 updates ago in nightly (3 days ago pretty much).

Are you using a 32 bit Nightly build or a 64 bit Nightly build?
The 64 bit Nightly build for Windows is only generated to test for compilation errors and doesn't undergo all the tests that other builds get, so the risk that something goes wrong can be quite high.<br />
So if you do use the 64 bit version then try the 32 bit version to see if you still have this problem.
