Hooking Two Macs Together to Transfer files

My first Mac is a dual 867 Mirrored Door G4 Power Mac, running Jaguar version 10.2.8; I want to cable it to my other Mac which is a 20" G5 IMac (prior to Intel), runnint Tiger.
I saw this exact same question in Mac Addict Mag and they said you can use either a USB cable or a Firewire cable...but it needs to be a transfer cable...The article stated that an "ordinary" cable would damage one or both computers.
So, should I look for a USB or a Firewire Cable and will a retailer know what I'm talking about when I ask for a Transfer Cable.

Hi,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forum!
What you want to do is called Target Disk Mode:

Use a standard Firewire cable, they are the same on both ends, USB cables are not.

  • Hooking two macs together

    Hello,
The business I work for is purchasing a new Intel Mac and they want to utilize its processing power with the current mac we have now.
The current mac we have is the PowerPc with Tiger OS.
The idea is that I edit a project and then pass it on to the old mac or the new one depending on what would work best so that it can render a project in the timeline or run compressor while I continue to edit on another project. Is that possible? I have looked at connecting the two via firewire and targeting one of the macs. I don't understand if that would be an advantage or not.
    Any ideas or pitfalls?
I'm guessing having an older mac and a new one with different operating systems is going to be our first hurdle.
    Thanks for any input.

    The computers, if on a shared network, could share files more naturally;
in fact PCs and Macs work together in a network.
FireWire (Target Disk Mode) won't work to naturally share files since one
of the two computers would be only seen as an external FW hard drive.
Setting up a small computer network would be a better idea; since you
can also share internet and other things. This could be done over an
Ethernet network since all devices (or many) have hardware identifiers
that help route data to and from them accurately & securely in a LAN.
But, I know nothing about setting up such a thing; so hopefully others
with that kind of information or links to refer to, will contribute here.
More information on both the computers involved, their OS X systems
and hardware configurations (build model, year, etc) would be helpful.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Getting a new Mac: need to transfer files/applications, have external hard drive, and wipe clean old Mac to give to family member

Getting a new Mac this Christmas. I have several questions:
    1. How do I transfer files/applications from old to new?
    2. I have an external hard drive, do I need to save iTunes account to it?
    3. How do I wipe the old Mac clean to give to family member?

    1. Use the Migration Assistant the first time you turn on the new computer.
    2. No, but you should do so as a backup.
    3. Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C or Option key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

  • Two Macs, one library, no file moving?

    Hi,
I have two Macs and would like to be able to share the same set of songs between them, with additions and deletions kept in sync. If I put all the songs in a Firewire drive connected to one, and then point both iTunes to the same directory AND uncheck the "Copy files to iTunes..." in Preferences/Advanced will I get the results I hope for? And if I leave "Keep Foler organized..." checked will it still list songs by album and artist, etc, if I have them named correctly? Or does iTunes need its own directory structure to accomplish this? I don't want it to start moving or copying things around without my sayso. Reminds me too much of Windows!
    Mike

    Theoretically this is possible.
When you launch any a copy of iTunes which you'd like to use that library, hold down the option key while double clicking the iTunes icon. This should present a dialogue box that gives you the option to choose a library. You browse to the library file on the external drive and voila.
Each machine has to be "authorised" to work with that computer and I believe the maximum number is five. This is achieved by going into Store->Authorise inside iTunes.

  • Connecting two macs together wirelessly

I have no clue if this is posible but I would like to be able to connect to my imac down stairs from my macbook up stairs to send documents instantly.
I currently use an app called gdisk. Up loud my files (mostly documents) then come downstairs turn on gdisk on my imac download the files then print the files I need.
I believe I need my ip address which I got here
    http://www.ipchicken.com/
then I went to find and said connect to finder. But I have no clue after that.
Is it posible to have my imac down stairs as an icon on my sidebar my macbook? Where I can just dobule click and have acess to transfer files.
if so is there any videos or step by step websites to help with this.
    Thanks.

Not sure I understand your network problem, but to answer at least a part of your question - (Is it possible to have my imac down stairs as an icon on my sidebar my macbook? Where I can just double click and have access to transfer files.) - once you do get a network connection, a globe icon, representing your other Mac (the source you want to send data from), should appear on your desktop (the target or Mac you want to transfer the data to). Before logging out or quiting connection to server on the target, drag that globe icon of the source Mac to your dock of the target Mac; place it immediately to the left of your trash. Then, next time you need to connect to the source (i.e., connect to upstairs from downstairs), you should be able to click that globe icon on the dock of the target/downstairs Mac and be linked to the other (source/upstairs) computer.
Hope this helps a little bit! It works flawlessly with Airport.

  • Linking Two Macs Together?

    Hello,
I've been thinking of getting two PowerMacs probably a G4 and a MacPro. My question is:
Is there a way to have one of the two, be the computer I use and have the other connected to it?
Essentially so that I could use the Superdrive, processor and Ram on the other mac. Somewhat to create one computer with another connected to it so I can use all of the computers features through one.
    If it is possible How?
And what do I need to do it?
Also is this just a waste of money to get two?
I'll be using it for professional Final Cut Pro editing.
    Thank You!

I'm not quite sure that this question was answered but I too have the same type of question. I have two Macbook Pros, 1 Core Duo and 1 Core Duo 2. I would like to know if these two computers can be connected together where all hardware can be used, especially the Superdrives. Can 1 be used as the read and the other be used as the write for disc copy purposes?
Further, can all ports be utilized from 1 machine such as the firewire and USB ports where I may have a mouse connected, can the mouse be used for both machines. If an external HD is connected, can the HD be accessed by both machines? Thank you in advance for your knowledge

  • Tranfering from PC to MAC - How to transfer files/ITunes/ Emails/Contac/CAL

I am about to buy a macbook and want to know how to transfer my files from my PC to my MAC. I also want to transfer my Outlook information to the MAC as well as all my Itunes Libraries and Playlists... I can follow really good directions, but I am not a technical person so any help you can give me would be so great appreciated. The Apple Store can do this for you.

I found this by searching through Apple Support. You can do this too. You can also call Apple support. They will help you as well.

  • Connecting two macs together to increase render speed.......

hello edit land. i am writting from chili where we are trying to produce a trailer and finish production. Time and money are not around. I need to figure a way to increase the render time while i am collor correcting. i am a novice jack of all trades master of none type, and i have never explored quark, shake all that stuff and perhaps the answer lies there. Anyway i have an i book g4 with out fcp on it and a power book g4 that is doing the work right now, and 380 gig external drive (g raid). is there any way to use the three of these together to process render files faster? thanks kellam

Sorry. Currently the answer is no. Shake and DVDSP4 and Compressor can benefit from a network of computers, but not FCP...

  • How do I use one external HD for two Macs to play music files?

I have an External HD linked to my iMac with all my music files. I want to use that same portable Ext HD to use with my MacBook.
Changing the location from MacBook/iTunes Preferences doesn't work, nor does File>Library>Organize Library. The music files don't show up in iTunes. I'm on iTunes 10.6.1.

    On each computer:
Open iTunes. Select Preferences from the iTunes menu and click on the Advanced icon in the toolbar. At the top you will see a box showing the path to your iTunes library. Click on the Change button, navigate to the location for the library on your external drive, select it and click on the Open button. Note this permanently changes the library's location on that computer. That means you cannot access your music unless the external drive is connected.
If you don't want a permanent change, then press the OPTION key and hold it down while you launch iTunes. iTunes will then prompt you to select the library you wish to open for that session.

  • PC crash Music only exists on Ipod, have new Mac, need to transfer files

I recently bought a Macbook Pro after my PC crashed, during the crash I lost all of the music files that were on my PC. Now these files only exist on the ipod. Is there any way that i can get the music onto my MacBook?

  • Transfer files from one computer to another thru wireless network

I have a new IMAC , and a Macbook Pro, which has a lot of files that I would like to transfer to the new IMAC, I also have a Time Capsule and both computers are set up on the same network. Can I do this? How do I ask to access the Macbook Pro from the IMAC?

Wireless would be my last choice.
Using a wired network would be faster.
Faster file transfer would be to boot the source of the files in target ddisk mode and connect the two Macs together by FireWire.

  • Linking two computers together

Can I link two macs together so I have access to both but the other computer doesn't have access to mine?

If you own both and have admin accounts on them, yes. On the "other" computer, go to System Preferences, Sharing, and turn on File Sharing.
When the two computers are on the same network, you should see the other computer appear in your sidebar in Finder. Click it, authenticate with your admin details (from the other computer), and you now have access to its files.

  • Using the same photos on two Macs with iPhoto'09

    Hi there,
I took a few hundred of photos during my vacation and imported them into iPhoto on my MacBook Pro (10.6.1). Now I would like to have these pictures on my MacPro, too - but all the photoinfos, places etc. should be preserved. How can I do that? Does the "export"-command work? I took the photos in RAW and would like to export them in RAW.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Stefan

The only way to do this is to link the two Macs together and use iPhoto Library Manager to move the files plus the associated metadata and versions between Libraries.
If you want to export the Raw files then you will not get the Metadata You have added in iPhoto. To get to the Raw you'll need to export the Kind as Original, and this is not part of the Original file.

  • 1 i pod two macs

I have two mac's and one i-pod 160gb. Is it possible to update the ipod on one machine and to update i tunes the other machine from the i-pod?

You could use a 3rd party App to transfer all your music from iPod to 2nd Mac, but, your best bet would be to connect the two Macs together and copy the whole iTunes library from one to the other. The Mac you want to copy to will need to be connected via firewire, and then restarted while holding down the 'T' key (target firewire mode). That Mac will then show up as an external HD. Simply drag and drop.
