Hooking up 2 computers side by side

Hi... possible stupid question of the day... how do I hook up my G-4 to my G-5 so I can utilize both of them???

Hi there, if I understand you correctly, there are two ways...
A KVM switch allows you to use 1 Monitor, 1 Keyboard, and 1 Mouse for both & switch back & forth.
I think a better way is to Network them and use Screen Sharing, you need Chicken of the VNC on the main one...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/files/cotvnc/Chicken%20of%20the%20VNC%202 .0b4/cotvnc-20b4.dmg/download
And then enable Apple Remote Desktop in the Sharing Pref Pane of the other one.

  • Hooking up 2 computers to one display

I have a G-5- with OS 10.4.8 and a new MacPro with Leopard, and one 23 inch display. Is there any way to hook both computers up to one display and switch back and forth quickly?

Check also to see if you monitor has more than one input. My LaCie 321 has two DVI ports and one VGA port. I can use either both of the DVI ports, or the VGA port and one DVI port. No matter which way I do it, I can attach two Macs to the monitor at the same time (which I am doing right now). Switching between them is just a matter of pressing a button on the front of the monitor. Then all you need to buy is one extra monitor cable.

  • Settings in OsX to hook up two computers trough Airport Express

I want to get access to a external harddrive with Mp3s that is connected to my iMac mini through my G5 that are both connected to my Airport netwoork at home. What would be the best way to set it up? What should the settings be on the computers?

You will need to use Sharepoints in order to share the hard drive.

  • Anyone know how to hook up two computers to High Speed DSL using one modem?

I agree about the wireless part as I also have the 6100G modem/router.  There were no details in the posting about the specific hardware and there are several available with and without wireless.

  • Trying to hook up 2 computers to transfer info

I have a eMac g4 desktop with a bunch of stuff on it that I'd like to put onto my new MacBook Pro laptop. I connected the two with a firewire cable and restarted both and I can't seem to find either on the Network and the Hard drive won't come up on either screen. I used to be able to do this and I cannot for the life of me remember what I'm doing wrong! Any help appreciated, thanks.

You're close; you need to hold the t key down while starting up the eMac to boot it into FireWire target disk mode (the eMac will be the target, the iMc will be the Host).

  • How do I hook my Keyboard up to my computer to use it as a MIDI controller?

Ok, I'm new to MACS and new to LOGIC. I just installed logic and all of its components on my IMAC. OSX 10.6.3 Once I installed everything, I tried to hook up my electric piano to use it as a MIDI controller. Mind you, I am also completely new to MIDI. My Piano is a KORG sp-300. I used an Alesis Audio Link USB- MIDI cable to connect my keyboard directly to a usb port in my MAC. I hooked up the midi side of the connector to the midi in and out on my keyboard, and plugged in the usb side to the computer. I then went to the Audio Midi set up, and looked in the midi studio, and there was the USB2MIDI(which is associated with the Alesis cord, and not my Korg piano) and the IAC driver from MAC. I checked so that both are online, and didn't change any of the other settings. I did a test set up, but when I played notes on the keyboard nothing happened.
So now when I open Logic, or garage band for that matter, it doesn't recognize that I have a midi controller hooked up. When I look in midi preferences in garageband, it says that there are 2 midi devices detected. In logic it says that there is no input or output.
I read the manual for LOGIC and for my Korg, and I am lost. Korg says that it transmits on 1 channel, automatically set to channel 1 if not adjusted, and receives on 16. If I am correct, right now I am not interested in receiving, only transmitting.
At this point, I just want to select a software instrument in Logic, play my Korg, and see notes(or MIDI data) appear in the arrange area. I don't know what's going on, but again, I am completely lost.
Could someone please help me here? Am I missing an obvious step? Like I said, I am new to all of this, so please let me know if you have any idea how to get my midi controller to work. It says in the Korg manual that it can be used as a controller, or a multitimbral tone generator. And I did switch the Local Off.
By the way, who would be best to call to solve this issue. MAC? Sweetwater(where I bought the Alesis cord, and Logic)? Or Korg?
Please let me know if you have any helpful advice.
    Thanks,
    Tristan

    Pancenter,
Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Tristan
    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • Deploy OS task sequence fails when deploying to multiple computers

    Hi gang,
I'm running into an issue when imaging multiple computers with MDT 2012. Let me give some background info.
I have installed Windows 7 64 bit on a laptop in audit mode, made my configurations, sysprepped the machine, and captured a .wim using WDS (captured to an external hard drive). I then imported this .wim into MDT, created a Standard Client Task Sequence to deploy
the image, and successfully deployed it to a machine.
My problem comes up when I initiate this task sequence on multiple computers simultaneously. If I put 6 computers side-by-side and run the task sequence at the same time, only a couple machines will actually succeed. The rest fail with the following:

If I restart the computer, boot back into PXE, and run the task sequence again, this time on it's own (as opposed to 6 computers at once) it works fine.
    Can anyone help?

I just rebooted the server and tried again, same result.

  • Linking 2 computers with Logic node, anyone try it?

Has anyone established a way to utilize 2 computers side by side to share the processing with logic?
I have a macbook intell and a non intell mac mini, can anyone advise on this set up?

I think your question is legitimate because I've
never found any mention of using Logic Node between a
PPC and Intel machines in the manual.
Hi,the reason you do not see mention of Intel in the Logic Pro manual...is because it was written before Intel chips were available on the Macs.
However, I've read that this is possible.
The latest version of the Node app,WORKS across Intel and PPC platforms.I use it every day,my main machine is an Intel MackBook CoreDuo 2gHz,and my slave is my G4 PPC iBook.
In your case, the problem would be the Mac Mini, because you need to
have computers with Gigabits ethernet ports and the
Mac Mini come with standard 10/100.
FALSE!!! NOT TRUE!!! While Logic recommends the use of Gigabit Ethernet to run the node app,you only need it on the HOST computer. And if you are running more than one slave, then it IS neccessary to use a Gigabit Ethernet Hub,in order to be able to have enough bandwidth to avoid problems between the host and slave computers.
BUT you CAN use any mac with an 10/100 ethernet protocol as a SLAVE NODE.It just will not give you as much horsepower as the Gigabit protocol (100 kbits VS 1000kBits...)
You could, for instance, have a G5 with Gigabit Ethernet, going to one 4-port Gigabit Ethernet Hub,and that going to 4 Mac of any kind, either 10/100 OR Gigabit.
    Cheers

  • Can I hook up my G4 to my G5 and run programs off it?

I got the new G5 and I have the Digi001, but the sound card wont fit into the G5 so is there a way I can connect my G4 to my G5 and run Pro Tools and use the Digi001 while it's attached to the G4? Right now I have the two computers connected through the ethernet port and i can access files on the G4 but when I try to open a Pro Tools file it says there is an error.

The main thing is I can't run Pro Tools and the Digi001 interface on my G5 cause it wont take the sound card. I only have one monitor and no space to hook up to computers with two monitors, keyboards etc. so i just want to hook up the computers to each other and run the program and interface from the G4 on the G5. i'm not trying to get a performance boost i just want to use the $800 Digi001 program again.
You can't use the G4 hardware on the G5 at all.
(X-Grid optimized software like VisualHub sends a large "task" to the other computers processors to do and then it comes back to the master machine)
All you can do is remote control the G4 from the G5 using software like Apple Remote Desktop or a similar product like VNC. The other machine will be in a "window" on the first. Use a Ethernet network for this and a Firewire network to transfer files in a public folder if ARD won't let you copy/paste/transfer files. (I think the new version does)
You can share the monitor, kb and mouse between the G5 and G4, one machine at a time using a physical KVM switch. Then share a network connection (Ethernet/firewire) and a public folder to transfer files between the two machines. This can grow tiresome if your switching between the G4 and G5 constantly.
I think remote control would be the best choice and ARD the best software for it's ease of use, security and integration with Mac OS X. If the G4/G5 won't boot without a monitor, kb or mouse then you'll need to add a KVM switch for those times when you need to boot the machines. Else your going to wear out your ports/connectors.

  • Connecting two computers with two routes?

Yes, can I hook up two computers, each with a different router on one phone line?  I hope this makes sense.  I have one main computer hooked up to a wireless/wired router and the one in another room I want to hook up to the internet also.  Do I need another router for that other computer?  The distance on the wireless does not reach to the other computer.

Here are my educated guess(es) :
    Perhaps you could..
    #1 use a wireless extender?
    #2 use a wireless bridge?
#3 convert the second router into a hub/switch/wap?

  • Problems With Office Network

At my office they just expanded to take over the second half of our building and put doors in, etc. This got me moved to nice, big, quiet office in the new section.
Naturally, someone ran the ethernet cables over to the new offices. Now I can no longer connect to the other Mac in the old office. On my Mac nothing from the old side of the building shows up in Network in the Finder. The other Mac cannot see me but still can see all the other computers on that side.
I can find computers hooked up on this side but not the other. If I put in the other Mac's IP address I can connect, but this is a hassle because we can't use static addresses, so I have to go look up his address from time to time. But he cannot connect to me using my IP address.
With the move I did notice that my router address changed completely so that all the IP addresses on this side of the building are very different from the other side. I don't know enough about networks to know why this is so, I should still be on the same network as the rest the office, only one router into the building as far as I know.
The weird part is that I can connect to the other Mac using the IP address, so that means my computer can see his, even though he can't see me and our Macs don't show up in the Network in Finder.
What's going on and is there a simple way to get one of us to show up in the Finder Network so I don't have to keep getting his IP address.

Looks like you may have to open certain ports that might be required by WECM.
Couldn't really find too much, but from what I did manage to find, it looks like 2948 is the port you need to forward to your laptop.
Before you do that though, are you on the latest firmware for the E4200?
Just to ensure that there isn't anything else that may be the problem, it's always recommended to be at the latest firmware. Also, before forwarding the port, you could try adjusting the MTU a little as well. Reduce it to around 1472 bytes, and keep going down to around 1365 bytes by decreasing the value by 20 bytes each time. It may well just be an MTU issue rather than the ports. In either case, please do post back if your issue is resolved with any of the above suggestions.

  • Migration assistant stuck on new 15' MBP. Help!

I've been having a terrible time with the migration assistant. I have a new 15'MBP retina fully loaded. Been trying for days to transfer my old applications, etc from my older 15' MBP. I could not do it through the wifi (tried but it just died after 18 hours). So I hooked up the computers with fw800 (with thunderbolt adapter on the new computer) and that didn't work. Then I backed up my old computer using time machine and am trying to setup new one with that backup but it's been 18 hours and seems yo be stuck. The bar is at the same place it was 8 hours ago. The estimated time went up from 3+ hours to 5 hours, so I guess something is happening even though the bar hasn't moved? I have about 350gb of stuff so I get it could take a while but it's been about 18 hours. What should I do! This is driving me crazy... I need to be up and running for work tomorrow.

    Hello
    try this
put your tow imac side by side then plug an ethernet cable between us , ethernet logo look like that
then on each imac desable wifi ( air-port )
go to system preferences -> network , you should see somthing like that
select from Configure IPv4 to MANUALY on both imac , then fill info for ehternet exactly as folow
    for 1st Imac
    for 2d Imac
then try launch again migration assistant , or use file sharing options on old imac

  • HD Activity Light---Doesn't!

Noticed in the last week or so that my HD activity light does not glow when there is obvious HD activity--boot-up, using Windows Explorer, etc..  The light is OK, as it glows just briefly at boot time.  AND, I hooked it to the 2-pin output on JPF1 for the power LED, and it glows brightly and steadily.
Only change to config was about a month ago, when I added the Kingwin Removable disc tray.    I specifically watched, and could see, the HD activity light when I inserted the tray with the 80GB WD drive, and did a backup.  BOTH the main HD light, and the light on the Kingwin would flash, indicating activity on the two drives.  Then, within the last week or so, I noticed the main HD light doesn't flash with disc activity (the Kingwin still does, when I have that drive inserted and in use).
Checked connections to JPF1--even reversed the connector to be sure the polarity was right.  Still, no joy.
Any ideas?  The only thing I HAVEN'T done is a CMOS-clear.  Think that might help?
    Many thanks.

I know what I would do! I would choose either.
Good of MSI to offer you help!
Hm, the answer bugs me a little: "trace" is a small wire of a kind, isn't it, and how can a powered wire repeatedly light a diod for a fraction of a second and then become dark? Could it maybe be a short? It would make more sense if the pin wasn't fully fastened, but then LED should light when pushing the connection manually.
A "trace" is actually a very thin, narrow strip of copper on a printed circuit board, left after the etching process, which takes the place of wires that were used in the old discrete component days.  If a board is stressed (moved, flexed, or other action) a trace can break which, of course, breaks the electrical connection.  Such a break can even be temperature-sensitive, causing an intermittent interruption of the electrical connection when a particular temperature is reached.  (One poster suggested an intermittent wire, as a matter of fact.)
I have worked with computers (main frames) most of my life, and I can remember one instance where a printed circuit board would fail at certain times but not others.  The engineer finally discovered that the board failed in a fairly narrow temperature range.  Then another case happened where there were two identical computers side-by-side in an installation.  A particular program could be run on both computers, and one would fail while the other would not.  The engineer and I nailed it down to a specific section of code, including a "divide" command that appeared to be the culprit.  When we "single-stepped" the computer through that code, and the divide command, it worked, and continued to work after that.  Seems single-stepping may have forced current to flow through the particular piece of circuitry that performed the divide, either slower or longer than when the program ran at normal speed.  It almost appeared as if the enhanced flow of current "welded" something something that was previously intermittent.  Weird, but true!
I understand what many of you are saying, that the failure of this light is a small thing, when the mobo works in every other way.  But, I gotta tell you, that hard disk activity light is a great diagnostic tool when a system, or program is behaving erratically.  I really want it to work properly.  So, I am willing to spend the money to send the mobo to MSI, since they will repair or replace it.  They do return replacements at their expense, however.
And, Fredrik: you are probably right that few might be interested in continuing this thread.  Can't argue with you!  I originally posted it hoping others might have suggestions, or similar experiences.  Now, I continue posting to document the progress.  I'll bring this to a close with a final post when I receive my replacement mobo.

  • ITunes auth problem on Windows 7 64-bit

    Hi,
I experience weird issues with the iTunes auth-process on a Windows 7 (64bit) machine.
When I try to authorize my computer it results in a message telling me something about connection issues. Anyhow, it seems the computer is kind of activated since I can deauth my computer. If I try auth'in my computer several times, it also allows to deauth it several times until it says that it is not auth'd anymore.
My tries so far to solve this
    - updated to latest iTunes
    - deactivated, even uninstalled firewall (used NIS2011), also disabled the Windows Firewall after that
    - checked hosts file
    - deleted SC Info
    - even tried with creating new library
    - disabled User Access Control in Windows
    - disabled all startup items in "msconfig"
    - tried to activate with same account a different computer in the same network, I was able to play movies using the private home sharing feature, also activation was no problem
    - re-installed Apple Software (including iTunes, Quicktime and Safari)
    - checked Diagnostic within iTunes with no problems
So my guess is that it could have something to do with 64 bit or any hard- or software related issue at my computers side.
    Detailed procedure:
1 - Start iTunes, click Store > Authorize > Enter credentials
and now the weird thing is that the "authorize" button says "deauthorize", no matter how often I try to deauthorize before.
2 - Repeated step 1 since it says always the same error message (connectivity alert)
3 - Playback of any DRM protected media does not work (movies). It asks for authorization again but fails to do so with the same message again
4 - Deauthorizing is possible and I noticed that I can do this as many times as I tried to authorize before.
Does anyone have a suitable idea for helping me out in this issue? I never had problems on my mac before, nor on a Windows 7 32bit system.
My 64 bit machine is only used with one iTunes account.
I already contacted the iTunes Support via Mail but they could not help me since this could be a technical issue.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Benjamin

After numerous calls with Apple support, I finally got it working
For me, the problem was the following:
    1. Make sure that Internet Explorer is your standard browser for windows (if not...make it)!
    2. In Internet Explorer go to "Internet Options" then "Advanced"
    3. In the list scroll down to "Security" and UNCHECK "Check for server certificate revocation"
    4. Make sure that (a bit further down) "Use SSL 3.0" and "Use TLS 1.0" are CHECKED.
    5. Delete the "SC Info" folder once again...
    6. Run iTunes in Admin-Mode
After that, I was able to activate my computer and I changed my browser back to Firefox afterwards...
Hope that will help you too !!
    Cheers
