Hooking up AE through ethernet to cisco/linksys router

Apologies if this is a repeat, tried searching.
I used to connect my AE to a Belkin router using a "uplink" button on the back of the router. Everything worked till the Belkin fried one hot day.
Got a new router - Cisco/Linksys "Etherfast" Cable/DSL router (non wireless) that does not have an "uplink" button like the Belkin did. Thought AE would be smart enough to adapt. Not so apparently.
Simply plugged the AE into the new router just like the old one. I can connect to the routers setup screen wirelessly through the AE but cannot access the internet, which is connected to the router through my cable modem.
If I plug the AE directly into the cable modem I do get the internet.
Tried setting the AE to "bridge" mode with no luck. But not sure if I need to configure the DNS settings. Not sure how to do that.
I've done hard/soft resets.
Do I need a crossover cable? Apple says the AE does not require a crossover.
thanks for any helpful info!

It is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment when changing components.
Please try the following:
o Power-down the Cisco, AirPort Express Base Station (AX), and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes. Note: Power-down order is not critical.
o Power-up the Cisco; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Plug-in the AX; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
o Power-up the computer(s).

By this statement, if you mean a wireless client connected to the AX, can access the Cisco's web-based administration pages, then the AX is (at least) getting the proper Private IP address from the Cisco gateway ... and, if this same wireless client cannot access the Internet, it is usually indicative that it is not getting all the proper IP address information from the Cisco ... specifically the DNS IP address information.
Hopefully, the power recycle will fix this.
Tried setting the AE to "bridge" mode with no luck. But not sure if I need to configure the DNS settings. Not sure how to do that.
Bridge mode would be the correct setting for a router that is downstream of another. In this mode, the AX will allow the Cisco to provide both the NAT & DHCP services for the entire network ... either wired clients connected to the Cisco or wireless clients connected to the AX.
Do I need a crossover cable? Apple says the AE does not require a crossover.
No, as both routers are capable of working with either crossover or straight-through type cabling.

  • Cisco/Linksys Router Vulnerabilities

    Hello,
I have an e3000 wireless router.. I am unable to disable wps on it.
The WPS vulnerability was exposed in December 2011, along with the reaver tool to exploit it.
    https://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/wifi-protected-setup-flaw-can-lead-compromise-router-pins-122711
Why is it that nearly a year later, that there hasn't been a firmware update allowing users to disable wps on their Cisco/Linksys routers?
Some have patches available, but judging by: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=3bccc46248f9417b909e2c1028f6778e_WPS.xml&pid=80&respid=0&snid=1&dispid=0&cpage=search
    The majority do not.
Even more astounding is that refurbished models are still available through your homestore:
    http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/Routers/Linksys-E3000-HighPerformance-Wirelessn-router_stcVVproductId97826163VVcatId551966VVviewprod.htm
Why is it that I have to update a major security vulnerability through dd wrt or tomato?
I've bought and recommended Cisco products for a long time.. However, I cannot in good conscience do so any longer.
Why is it that Cisco cannot/will not support products that they have released?

  • Cisco-Linksys Router and no PPPOA Option for Conne...

    Hi all!
New here and just hoping to get some here!
We are using a BT Business hub Router and it is having a few issues with wireless connectivity, so I would like to use another router to see if it is our equipment or if it is the router itself.
I have a Cisco Linksys E1000 Router and after looking at the BT router I can see that the connection type is set to PPPOA with a username and password. I do know the username and password so that isnt an issue, however on the Cisco router there is no option for PPPOA, the only options are:
Static IP, DHCP, PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, and BigPond
There is a connection in the back of the cisco router for the ADSL cable, I was just wondering if there is a way to work around this?
    Thanks very much!!

I am sure you will get help there when someone has time.

  • G4 iMac w/ethernet connection to Linksys router - not happening.

    Hi,
My main goal is to provide wireless service to a new Toshiba notebook. I haven't been able to do that completely.
I bought a Linksys WRT54G broadband router in order to connect to my Westell Wirespeed modem (Verizon dsl service) and subsequently connect (via ethernet cable because I don't have an airport card ) my G4 iMac to the router and transmit signal to the new notebook from the router. My iMac has always had connection when connected to the Westell modem but it now won't connect when wired to the Linksys router. Is it a compatibility issue between the iMac and the Linksys router? Or something else?
This is the way the Linksys instructions say to connect everything. I have tried many times to restart, power down, power up all the components.
    Thank you.

Nevermind. When in doubt, call technical service...that's my new motto!

  • Hooking up internet through ethernet on my G3

I have just reinstalled my OS-X on my G3. It is a newer model. Now I attach the ethernet cable and here is where I start to get lost.
When I do it on PC all I need to do is connect and the pc does the rest. I don't know what settings or configurations I need to do to allow the G3 to get online.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or offer some ideas?
    Thanks

Give us a clue - at least tell us what is at the other end of the cable!

  • Cisco Linksys WE-4200 compatible?

Are either Airport Express or Apple TV compatible with the latest Cisco Linksys router?

Will an Airport Express connect wirelessly?  I would like to stream music to the second floor system.
Yes, it will "join a wireless network".
Will it connect via ethernet to stream music to the first floor home theater system?
Yes, if you stream to an AirPort Express. it will "connect using ethernet"
Would there be a time lag between the same music played wirelessly and wired at the same time?
    Probably
Will Airport express work on my smal third floor hooking in via ethernet but then acting as a wireless extender?
Yes, if you configure it in Bridge Mode to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security and password as the "main" wireless network
How about Apple TV instead.  Would there be a better chance of connecting wired and wirelessly than with the Airport Express?
Strongly recommend an Etherent connection if you plan to stream any kind of high-definition video material. You will need to remember that the Apple TV only has an HDMI output and optical audio out, so your audio video receiver, or television etc at the Apple TV end will need to have that capability.

  • WRT54G2 re-directing search to Cisco Linksys Websearch powered by Yahoo

The linksys WRT54G2 has been a disappointment thus far.  One of the most annoying "features" is it hijacking url based searches to Cisco Linksys Websearch powered by Yahoo.  This is not a browser or computer setting, as it happens with any computer/browser connected to the network.  It appears to be at the router level, but I cannot find any settings that would indicate where I can turn this annoying service off.  Any suggestions?  If it can't be remedied I will, unfortunately, be selling the router and buying a non-Linksys product.

The problem is assocaited with using the Cisco linksys router.  I'm not clear what you mean.  Plugging in the internet connection directly to the computer via ethernet bypasses the linksys router, and pages are no longer hijacked to Cisco Linksys Websearch.
I take it no on else has experienced this hijacking?  This is a problem since the latest firmware update.  It is a serious enough problem for me that I will have no choice but to by another manufacturer's product if this can't be remedied.

  • Airport with Cisco / Linksys E4200 Router

Hi, I have not been able to find a straight forward answer so i'm posting this.
I'm looking to switch my Linksys router over to N wireless, vs N and G or Just G- Not sure what it is now. I don't have great connection on my 2nd floor, with my Linksys router on the first floor. I want to use this as a bridge (instead of the RE1000), because i want the 5ghz, and AirPlay.
Can i use this as a plug and play bridge? I just want it to extend the signal, and be able to use airplay. No new network.
Some info i thought i would add:
ISP Cat 5 or 6? to Modem to Router (E4200)
    Ping at 64 bytes
    WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode Security
    Thanks in advance.

No you will not be able to use an AirPort to extend the wireless range of the Cisco/Linksys router if they will be interconnected by wireless. However, if they can be interconnected by wire, you could configure them for a roaming network.

  • TS3742 Installed Cisco Linksys VUSB.  Now my MacBook Air restarts and I get a kernel panic

Bought a new Cisco Linksys router a few weeks ago.  Had to install their VUSB to manage the peripherals.  Now I keep getting this panic message and my MB Air restarts whenever I log out. How do I fix this?

    Same issue here.
If Cisco VUSB is running (in the dock) when the Macbook Air goes to sleep, when it awakens a kernel panic occurs every time.  Now I've had to set Cisco VUSB to not launch upon startup to ensure I don't forget about it when putting my Macbook Air to sleep.  Very annoying.

I'm on 10.8.4... and this is Cisco VUSB 1.2.0 (SXUPTP Driver 1.10.0).

does the airport time capsule eliminate the need for my cisco linksys wireless router?

I understand that your network now looks like this:

If you do not want to use the Cisco/Linksys router and use a Time Capsule instead, then your network would look like this:

  • Cisco Linksys E1000 - Lag Spike about every 10 seconds.

    Hello,
Hopefully this is the right place to ask such a question. I recently purchased a Cisco Linksys router, as I was having problems with the main connection and my computer. The router works almost fine and acts as a bridge between the original router, and my computer.
I have a Westell Versalink plugged into the DSL phone cord. The Versalink is connected to my Cisco router, and the Cisco router is connected to my computer... All using cables.
    Basically, it's Versalink -> Cisco -> Computer.
It works almost great, except I keep receiving huge lag spikes every 10 seconds, when trying to run something that requires a constant connection. (In my case, a game. It will lag every 10 seconds.)
I'm not sure I setup the Cisco router to properly work the way I want it to, thus the lag.
It used to be far worse, but I setup the PPoP login on the Cisco router independent of the fact that it's already connected on the Versalink.
I need some advice on how to eliminate this lag so I can get a steady and smooth connection.
Before anyone starts giving me Wireless advice, this has NOTHING to do with the Wireless portion, that works fine. (But probably would experience the same lag.)
This is happening regardless, and I need it fixed.
Yet again, I'll type out my layout here:
DSL / Phone -> Versalink -> Cisco Router -> Computer
I believe the problem exists in the Cisco router. I'm amazed that I was even able to get it to work how I did to begin with. However, I need some additional help.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

    Ice Sage,
I would do a little more research on the internet regarding ALL Cisco Linksys routers... the issue you are seeing is normal of thier routers right now.. and one they have not been willing to fix... The Linksys router you have ... in reality is actually the WRT160N with a few tweaks in the firmware... If you look at the specs, the E1000 is not the best router to play your video games with or HD Movies... you really wanted the E3000
BUT .... that also has that same issue as well but more pronounced... as well as over heating... if you take your router off you will see the lag goes away.

  • Trouble Connecting Airport Express to Linksys Router

I am running a Windows XP SP2 Dell that is connected via Ethernet to a Linksys router. That router goes to a DSL modem and a Linksys WAP. I connected the AX via Ethernet to the router and then plugged it in. Initially got the green light and the router actually appeared to recognize it for a few seconds. I then tried setting up the AX using the Airport Setup Wizard, but it never saw the connection. Now the AX is flashing Amber.
I've taken the firewall off and I can't see anything with the router software either. Any clues on how or what I need to do? Thanks.
      Windows XP

Are you using WEP? If so, you may have an issue with the WEP key format. Take a look at this article, it helped me:
    http://tinyurl.com/s58m
This is especially important if the firmware you have installed on the AirPort Express is old. I believe the latest version of the firmware fixes this issue.
Bottom line, if you're using WEP and you have a hex-formatted key on your network, then (with older firmware) you may need to precede the WEP key with a "$" to tell the AirPort Express you're giving it a hex string and not an ASCII string.
    Good luck,

  • Linksys router interupts service often

I have my PC and G5 hooked up by hard wire to my linksys router. My Powerbook is wireless. My linksys router oftern interupts the internet service. Sometimes everday. I know its the router because I have unplugged my internet line from the router and plugged it into the modem and the internet works.
My only solution at this point is to shut down my G5, unplug the modem and router. Once the G5 is shut down, I plug the modem back in, then the router. Once those are going, I turn my G5 on and the internet is back up....at least for a day.
Does anyone know how I can fix this interruption? The only other observation I have noticed is that most of the time, the interruption happens after either my G5 or powerbook were asleep, then I hoped onto the internet.
    Thanks.

Wireless connections have been lots of trouble for Airport. Firmware updates have improved reception. And some improvements with OS updates.
    Newer router? latest firmware?
Loss of connection on wake from sleep was noted in MacFixit article.
Are you using 10.4.5 or something more current?

  • My Cox Cable/Telephone splits to a telephone modem and a broadband modem.  The BB connects via ethernet to a Cisco Linksys E2500 wi-fi (whatever).  Can I plug my usb printer into the E2500, configure, and then print from my iPad?

I have just purchased an iPad 2.  I have wi-fi for roku and have connected the iPad to it.  I want to print to my usb printer.  My connection is:  Cox Cable spit to telephone and broadband.  The broad band feed goes to a Cox modem and feeds the wi-fi.  The Cisco Linksys E2500, wi-fi's the Roku and iPad.  Can I USB from the wi-fi to the printer, configure (however), and then print from my iPad?
    If not, how?
    All comments will be appreciated.

the ipad cannot airprint to a non airprint printer.... i think that the only solution is to install helper software on a computer that has an attached printer and share it through the computer only...computer would have to be always left on

  • Cisco Linksys E1200 Router says ethernet cord is not connected

    Hello,
I first had issues when there was a large thunderstorm that passed through the area. Lightning struck in my complex, and caused a large powersurge to go through my building. My router is plugged into a surge protector so I figured that it would be okay. The internet was out for a few days, and I only realized it came back when I plugged the ethernet cable directly into my laptop.
I have tried unplugging the router and waiting for a few minutes, then plugging it back into the power sources, then plugging the ethernet cable back in. To no avail, the internet is still unavailable to me wirelessly. I have tried different ethernet cords with no success. I reset the device to factory settings and have tried to set it back up with the CD and still no success; it does not recognize that the ethernet cord is plugged in.
I've had this router for about 2 years now and never had any problems till now. What can I do to fix it, if anything? Or do I need to just get a new one? Thank you!

Power surge blew the Internet Port on the router. In this senario the power surge came in via the ethernet internet connection as well. You will have to replace the router.
