Hooking up Airport Express for the first time
Hi -
Like many others, I just can't seem to figure out how to hook up my AirPort Express (802.11n). Here is how I am currently set up ...
In the basement I have a Mac Mini hooked up to an ActionTec GT701-WG wireless router (from Qwest), but I am usually working on my MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz running OS 10.5.6) on the second floor. I get good signal strength in a few rooms of the second floor, but not the entirety.
I was thinking that by buying an Airport Express I could improve my connectivity to include the entire second floor of my house as well as wirelessly access a printer and speakers up here.
Here is what I have done ...
I added the Media Access Control number I pulled off the Express itself to the Access Control List on the ActionTec router.
Plugging in the Airport Express results in a blinking amber light (I do not have a printer or speakers plugged into the AirPort Express at this time). At this point, scanning for wireless devices in the AirPort Utility finds nothing. I then poke the reset button on the Express with a paperclip (while it is still plugged into the wall) until I get quick amber flashes and then it resets to the regular blinking amber, but the device is then discoverable by Airport Utility.
I am then able to walk through the subsequent set up steps ..
1. switch network;
2. enter a new password;
3. check "I have a wireless network and want to add AirPort Express or replace an existing device on my network";
4. check "I want AirPort Express to wirelessly join my current network";
5. type in name of network and select WEP security and input password (I am unsure what WEP I use, but have a ten digit alphanumeric password and have tried the configuration with all three WEP possibilities with the same result each time).
It then attempts to restart the AirPort Express, but results in the error message that it was unable to find the device.
I'm now stymied. I've been reading through other posts for a few days but never quite seem to find the solution to my problem ... or even the next thing to try. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could offer.
Thanks in advance,
Tom Wirth
Is there something different than the process I described going through above?
Yes. As I mentioned in my earlier reply, you can use the AirPort Utility's "Assist Me" feature to have the AXn join your ActionTec router. Once configured the AXn will both share any USB printer connected to it and support streaming iTunes.
AirPort Utility was the only set up I was able to use. There is also an "AirPort Setup Assistant for Graphite and Snow" application, but when opened it says that the appropriate hardware was not found (which I don't understand, because I am using an AirPort Card to connect to the internet right now, aren't I?).
The AirPort Setup Assistant for Graphite and Snow was provided by Apple to replace the earlier AirPort Setup Assistant. This updated version only supports the earlier 802.11b Graphite & Snow base stations, NOT the newer 802.11n versions like your AXn. Instead, you must use the newer AirPort Utility to administer it. This newer utility has both a "automatic" and "manual" modes available for administration.
What might be confusing is that Apple also calls the built-in wireless card in its Macs an AirPort. This wireless card, like its PC equivalent, let's you access wireless network ... like the one created by the ActionTec ... and why you are connecting to the Internet now.
Sorry. I expected the AX to be a little more plug and play than it turned out to be and I don't relish the idea of paying somebody a lot of money to come install it for me.
Actually it would have been if your requirement was to have it be your only router, but since you already have an existing one, a bit of administration is required to get it working properly. Of course, familiarity with the AirPort Utility would have helped. That's why Apple provided the "Assist Me" mode to take you through the necessary set up steps.
Do you think I am better off trying to resell this and try something else?
If what you really need is to extend the wireless range of your ActionTec, then yes you would probably be better off with some other option, but if printer sharing/iTunes streaming will meet your needs, then I would say your best bet is to keep it.

How to set up Airport Extreme with Charter ARRIS Modem TM902A for the first time for WIRELESS.
When Charter Tech goes to your site, have them connect the modem up, but do not connect the modem to your iMAC or MacBook Pro. What you want to do is connect the Airport Extreme to the iMac or MacBook Pro first with the Ethernet Cable. You have to do this to configure via Airport Utility to set up the Base Station Name & Base Station Password.
You will then create/configure a Wireless Network, create your Wireless Password that will be entered on each of your Devices, example, Apple Tv, your iPhone, etc., you want to allow access to your Wireless Network you are creating.
Wireless Security will be -> WPA/WPA2 personal or just WPA2
Enter the Wireless Password you want
Verify the Wireless Password (enter it again)
After it is created you will see it on the Airport Utility window with the name you created for it and to the left, will be a Dot (circle that will be yellow).
Next you then want to unplug the power to the Airport Extreme, and then take the end of the Ethernet cable you unplugged from the iMac or Lap top MacBook Pro and connect it to the back of the Modem.
Next unplug the power cord from the modem and wait about 5 minutes, then plug the power back into the Arris Modem and wait until all lights come back on the modem wait
about 5 minutes, then plug the power cord back to the Airport Extreme and you will see it the light blinking yellow. Wait about 5 to 10 minutes, during this time Restart you IMAC or MacBook Pro, and once it is back up click on the Airport Utility and you should see on the Airport Utility screen.
For INTERNET to the left the light should be green and you should see the Airport Extreme also appear and the light to the left on the screen should also be green. If they are, you then should be able to click on the Wireless Symbol on top of bar of the screen and click to select the Wireless Network Name you created.
If you Do Not See the light (Icon) next to INTERNET turn Green, or if you see the Internet Light Green, but the Light (Icon) next to the Airport Extreme is yellow, unplug the power again to the modem and unplug the power again to the Airport extreme and wait about 15 minutes or up to 30 minutes. Then plug the power cord back to the modem wait till all the lights light up then, plug the power cord back into the Airport Extreme and Restart your iMAC or MacBook Pro.
The Airport Extreme light should change from yellow to green. Open up the Airport Utility to see what the indicators are showing they should both be green. Again select Wireless network you created under the Wireless Icon on the top right of the screen. Open Safari and see if you are able to Route to a web page or the apple site should appear.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR AIRPORT EXTREME WAS PREVIOUSLY SET UP FOR USE WITH ANOTHER CARRIERS ROUTER OR MODEM.
NOTE: If you already had your Airport Extreme connected for example, I previously had ATT Uverse and the Airport Extreme was connected to the Wireless Router Model 3801HGV, I disabled the Uverse Wireless and used the Airport Extreme for the Wireless signal in bridge mode, as the Airport extreme Signal is much stronger than the Uverse router, and I was able to obtain a Wireless signal with the Airport Extreme way much better with no signal loss which was very very frustrating with the Uverse router.
Anyhow if you had it hooked up like this, now that you will be using it with the Charter ARRIS Modem TM902A, you will need to reset the Airport Extreme to clear out the old data it has in memory, with the previous set up otherwise it will not work. Trust me I spent 6 hours trying to make it work reading all Apple Support Community questions and answers relating to this type issue/problem others have been having trying to get their set up working. I tried all the tips, and I finally decided just to see if by chance I would be able to connect with someone with Charter Tech support who might be familiar with Apple to be able to assist me and by luck I did. He told me why it was not working and was all due the previous configuration with the ATT Uverse router was still in memory with the Airport Extreme. Finally it was 10:30 PM when I decided to call Charter Tech Support and I had been working on this since 3:00 pm pacific. I did not call them earlier as all the post I read said they never received any good help from Charter. After calling them I finished up by 11:00 PM and was able to finally connect Apple Tv, iMac, iPhones and Macbook Pro. We love our Apple Product and Happy all is connected with the new
Internet Provider Charter. I must say the speed is way way much better than it ever was with AT&T Uverse.
THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO:
First you will need to unplug the Airport Extreme, then by taking the tip of a pen or paper clip end you need to push the reset button on the back of the Airport Extreme and hold it
down and at the same time plug the power cord back into the Airport Extreme count to 5 or 10 then release the reset button. Then once he light in front of the Airport Extreme stops blinking you need to plug the Ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to your iMAC or Macbook Pro, and restart which ever one you have, then open the Airport Utility once it is back up. If you see airport extreme pop up with the old network name or it shows and yellow triangle click on the Airport Extreme ICON it will not let you configure it but will ask if you want to get rid of it or remove and just do it. Then Again restart your iMAC or MacBook Pro, open up Airport Utility again, and on the top left you should see under “Other Airport Base Stations” the MAC ID for the Airport Extreme.

I have a Linksys WRT320N I used for the initial Charter setup.
I can get my Airport to work here, but the Internet light on the Modem flashes Yellow.
Hasn't caused any issues so far but one thing I did notice.
On the Linksys there were 3 DNS servers listed.
The Airport Extreme only lists 2 and i don't see where I could add another, only change whats already there.
I tried everything above, but light on modem still flashes yellow.
I have the technicians cell phone. Told me "that shouldn't be" and gave the same advice listed above.
I'll break down and call Charter one day, see if it's on their end. NSA tracking may need a reset LMAO. -
I just got the iPhone 5 and took it on a trip and took a bunch of photos on it. I just came home and hooked it up to my Mac for the first time and hit restore. All of my trip pictures disappeared. Is there any way I can retrieve them?
Did you by chance have photo stream turned on? If so then they might be there. When you restored your phone it deleted everything and they will be unretreivable from your computer.
-
Help I just hooked up my iPhone to my laptop for the first time and i accidentally chose to have it read it as my ipod so all my pictures were deleted off of it. I had not backed it up before. Is there anything I can do? Please tell me my photos aren't gone :[

I am setting up my Time Capsule for the first time, all of my connectiions are correct but, AirPort Utility is not recognizing my Time Capsule or my network?
Try connecting your iMac to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable to see if that allows AirPort Utility to "see" it.

Can you use 2 airport expresses at the same time?
I want to play my iTunes through my computer speakers and up to 2 airport expresses at the same time, to fill my house with music without having to blast it in any one room, but iTunes will only play on the computer's speakers or through the airport express, but not both.
Is there a hack to get it to play on multiple airports, like giving both airports the same identity or something?
I could acheive this with extra speakers and lots of wires running all over the house, but I'd like to avoid that. From the Airport Express FAQ
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108038#9
Question: Can iTunes send a single AirTunes stream to multiple AirPort Express stations?
Answer: Yes. With iTunes 6.0.2 or later, you can send an AirTunes stream to multiple remote AirPort Express units, provided that each AirPort Express has the latest AirPort firmware 6.3. The maximum number of remote AirPort Express units is three to six in typical conditions. The number that works for you will depend on your environmental conditions (such as building composition and local radio interference), distance to the remote AirPort Express units, and available network capacity relative to your other usage. -

Newbee's question: Error connecting to the management server for the first time
Dear all, I am very new to the oralce world and got stuck today the first time I install oracle 8i on my win2k pro.
After the installation, I was trying to connect the Enterprise Manager Console for the first time, using the default user name sysman and password oem_temp (correct?). The problem is that I don't know exactly what is a management server, and what name it should be called. I named the database/sid name orarem, under D:\Oracle\admin\OraRem, does it have something to do with this issue?
I only installed the oracle enterprise server edition 8.1.6.0.0, not the Client part, will that matter if I only wanna run oracle on my stand alone desktop as a testing procedure for now?
Any help would be really appreciated!!Bingo!! I had been trying dumping various .plist files
Not surprisingly i was a little hesitant about throwing the Airport folder in the bin.
First thing I did was to check it had been replaced on restarting!
Glad to say that "Check for updates" is now doing its thing.
I don't know why it gave me such grief, I just felt it could develope into something nasty down the line.
Thank you again.
Unfortunately they don't seem to have a points system for this topic.
Your fix should be available in Google from now on -
I am going to back up to Time Machine for the first time
which I know sounds nuts. I was manually doing it for the past 6 months- don't ask why.
Do I have to completely wipe out my Lacie and do any formatting to it? Or do I just delete everything from it and set my Time Machine to default backup to that drive and go from there as if I'm doing it for the first time?
Also, I don't keep my EHD attached constantly to my laptop- I assume that is not a problem and whenever I hook it up, I can then ask TM to go to work?
Sorry for the basic questions- appreciate the help!
Thanks,
BerniceI haven't burned a CD in years. My old MacBook doesn't have a DVD burner.
The biggest issue is the size of your various drives. For Time Machine, your Time Machine drive should be three times the size of the drive you are backing up. If you don't quite have that (and I don't), you can get away with three times the amount of data you are backing up. Whichever configuration gives you that equation should be the one you use for Time Machine. You can partition one of the external drives so that one partition is big enough for Time Machine and the other is used for other purposes, such as archives. I have one external drive configured like that. If you don't have enough room to partition, then dedicate one drive to Time Machine and the other to archives and/or clones.
Some people feel it is very important to maintain a long Time Machine history and migrate that to new drives. I don't quite understant that. I use Time Machine for backups, nothing more. I blow away all my backups on a fairly regular basis and start a fresh one. I don't need six month old versions of files. If I accidentally delete a file, I will notice sooner than that. If I have a hardware failure, I only need the last backup.
I currently have those bootable clones only because my MacBook is in a funky state right now (long story) and my MacBook Pro is a work machine bound to an Active Directory domain. I can't rebuild that system by myself without IT from work and that would be difficult for me (longer story). I don't consider bootable clones to be a regular part of my backup strategy. They are useful snapshots and archives for specific times when I feel I need them. -

Upgrading ram and harddrive before turning on macbook for the first time?
Hello, I'm totally new to the world of Macs. I am for sure going to purchase a Macbook, but I feel it might be better to upgrade ram and harddrive through third party. I have never upgraded ram or a harddrive, but it seems easy enough after watching the video at macworld and reading instructions. My question is:
Should I install the ram and harddrive before I turn on the macbook for the first time? Would this make things any easier? Would this be a bad thing to do?
I plan on ordering both the macbook and the ram and harddrive on the same day. Which is basically why I was wondering.
Thank you!Welcome to the discussions!
I agree fully with Ned. You will want to power it up and run the setup and even do your data transfer and maybe even install a program or two before doing any upgrades at all.
Why?
Updating the OS tests your Airport or ethernet connection.
Migrating data over by FireWire or USB tests those connections.
Installing programs from CD will test out the CD drive.
You will also get a feel for the baseline performance and have something to compare it to once you do those upgrades. -
When i tried to use the itunes store for the first time it said I had to contact customer support to complete the transaction.
You can contact iTunes support here : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Express Lane, then iTunes > iTunes Store

I am running this on a Duo Core processor, Intel, Laptop, Windows 7 with 4-gigs of ram. I have never had a problem with other programs crashing like this before.
Any ideas? I have never used Firefox and after 20 years have decided to try something new.
Thanks for any help. You mean out of this whole community no one knows how to fix this ... I wanted to give Firefox a try, but honestly, I am starting to see why I have not switched from IE, it is stable and I get answers when I post to the Microsoft boards as well as the answer to everything I have ever had an issue with is out there ... what is worse is that I am not the only one with this problem and no one can still help because I am sure us five are not the only ones that have run into this.
