Hooking up an iMac to a telly

Hi all,
The college I work at is going over to Mac from PC editing systems. What's the cheapest way to connect a new intel iMac to a television so that you can monitor video editing in Final Cut? (I don't want to go via a camcorder).
Thanks,
Sean

If you are working with DV material, get a Analog/DV converter. Canopus makes a line of such devices (ADVC) that work very reliably. If you are working with HDV, look into the Matrox MXO (the original one - not the MXO2).
Good luck,
x

  • I've just hooked my 20" iMac up to my Toshiba 37" HDTV using a mini dvi-HDMI adapter, and works well, EXCEPT for the green tinge (or hue) that is showing up on my TV. Any suggestions or ideas?

I've just hooked my 20" iMac display up to my Toshiba 37" HDTV using a mini dvi-HDMI adapter, and everything works well, EXCEPT for the green tinge (or hue) that is showing up. Everything else looks pretty good though..... The color that is on my iMac is still good, Its just green on the TV.
    Anyone have suggestions or ideas?

Try opening the Display System Preferences, then click on the Color options in the Display preferences window that appeared on the Toshiba display. Click on the Calibrate button and follow the instructions for creating a custom ColorSync profile that will hopefully solve the green tinge issue. The Apple Display Calibrator Assistant software that launches when you click on the calibrate button will walk you through the process.Assuming that the green tinge is minor and that you don't have a more serious cable or hardware issue, I am hopeful the results will be worth it.

  • Hooking up an iMac by ethernet?

So I have a 2011 27" iMac with less-than-stellar WiFi (constant dropouts, amongst other things), and after a few trips into the Apple Store for maintenance, they determined that it's the $900 logic board that's faulty. I've since bought a Retina MBP to replace it, and it's great for most things. However playing most games on it seems to really tax the fans, and watching movies on it just isn't the same as it was on my iMac.
So I'm looking into ways of getting my iMac back into action alongside the MBP, and came across the AirPort Express which I think might suit my needs. I just need to know if it can do what I'm thinking. Can I connect the AE to my home WiFi network, then hook my iMac up to one of the ethernet ports of the AE and use that to connect my iMac to the internet? And if I do that will I be able to use things like AirDrop and/or access my MacBook's files from the iMac?
    Thanks!

    Yes.
However, I fail to understand how you intend to use your iMac if its logic board has already been determined to be faulty. If using its Ethernet port alleviates the Wi-Fi problem you describe it will remain a serviceable machine, within that limitation. AirDrop requires Wi-Fi to be operative. If it is not, you can still access the iMac's files over the network using File and / or Screen Sharing.

  • My ipad will only charge after update when being hooked to my iMac. Are there any answers to this dilemma ?

Ok one thing i found is if your itunes needs updating and you hook your ipad to your mac (lucky if you have a imac to do so) it will charge.
What is up with Apple , did the updates for patches after IOS 7 and still will not charge. Using orignal charges that came with equipment on a good wall circuit.
Does not matter which one will not charge . HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Most USB ports do not provide sufficient power to charge an iPad. Normally it's best to charge your iPad using the original charger and original cable.
If the iPad will not charge there are only a few possibilities.
    No power to the outlet.
Bad cable. Try a different cable.
Bad charger. Try a different charger.
Dirt or crud in the connector port. Check and clean carefully.
Software failure. Reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
Hardware failure. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • Hooking PS3 to imac

is it possible to hook a PS3 to an imac and play?
if so, could any one explain please.

    You can but not well.
Check out products like elgato eyeTV hybrid... they can, but will only be in 480i or p at best... not HD and in my opinion not worth playing or the hassle.

  • Ipod is EXTREMELY slow when I hook up to iMac

When I go to hook up my Ipod to Itunes on my iMac. It takes 10 + minutes to recognize the Ipod.

The iTunes 7.7.1 update fixed it for me and my 5G & 5.5G iPods.

  • How to hook up my iMac 4,1 to my hdmi tv

How can I get my new led tv to connect to my old iMac G5,  4,1 running 10.6.8.  Can't upgrade anymore.  I want to view the internet and certain files on the tv screen?

Whether that is a "Mid-2011" model purchased in 2012, or a "Late-2012" model, it should have a Thunderbolt port.
This port is backward compatible with the Mini DisplayPort, which is the same sized connector.  Apple sells this adapter in the online Apple Store, to convert to HDMI
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA824ZM/A/belkin-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-adap ter
It says, "Transmits video and audio* from your Mac with Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port for viewing on any HDMI-enabled device."
Other similar adapter products should also work.

  • I want to transfer my Windows files from my Clickfree external drive to my new iMac. iMac recognizes the drive but won't read the files. What should I do? My PC hard drive is dead so I can't hook up my iMac to that.

I'm switching from Windows to iOS. But my new iMac won't allow me to transfer my Windows files on my Clickfree HD425 over to the iMac. It initialy didn't even recognize my hard drive during set up, so I manually went through Finder where it recognized the Clickfree drive. But my files wouldn't appear. I can't go back to my original Windows computer because the hard drive crashed, and that's why I bought this new iMac in the first place. What should I do? As a Mac newbie who was reluctant to exit the Windows world, I don't want my original babystep into the iOS world soured by my first experience.

Hi Rick, & a warm welcome!
In Disk Utility on the Mac, what Format does it say the drive is?

    Hello Sean
For televisions, projectors or VCRs that use S-video or composite video connectors, use the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter (M9319G/A) and a S-Video or Composite (yellow RCA) cable.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore/?productLearnMore=M9 319G/A
It is best to run that type of setup in Extended Desktop, running in Mirror mode "monkey's up" the iMac's display resolution.
See "Resolutions" in the following link:

  • Hooking up to iMac to the powerbook to get HD info from iMac

    what cables do i need?
where do i find the settings? (on each unit)
    thanks for your help

All you need is a firewire cable to attach both macs. Start up the Powerbook with the cable attached and hold down the T key, this will start up the laptop in target mode and you will be able to copy the iMac settings to your PowerBook.

It looks like the projector uses VGA input and HDMI input. So get a mini display port to VGA or min display port to HDMI adapter cable and connect to the projector. If you intend to use HDMI the correct cable in Apple's USA online store is:

    Good luck.
I am assuming you just want to use the projector as an external display. If you want to, you can also get an AppleTV (about $75 from Apples refurbished store) and then you can watch content stored on your TV such as movies, photos, music as well as all the content available on ATV. You can learn more about ATV at http://store.apple.com/us/product/FD199LL/A/refurbished-apple-tv?fnode=14a50729c 804728419b921da95cab7ae47907ddc37376ca0fd1dcbb64ed28942ea8fc13dedc88cfe76e4e691e be59839abb5c7530c89dd9f50de8dee9c23d5210cebe09ca9a99a9b077dcf1ec4b90c6805b5735ed d7d596173f0eb3856982f4e

  • Is there a way to hook up an iMac to your TV?

It would be nice to watch my digital movie files on my TV's larger screen (plus the TV is HD).
I thought maybe you could get a cord w/ firewire or usb on one end and component, S-video, or RAC jacks on the TV end. Is there anything like that...or any other way to do it?
    Thanks a lot.

    Mr. Eeee,
Possibly, depending upon whether you have the appropriate inputs on your television. Have a look at the page below. You may connect your iMac Core Duo to a television with S-video or composite video connectors using the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adaptor.

  • Can I hook up an iMac to a laptop to use it as a monitor

I want to buy a new laptop, but also want to be able to use it in my office, using my big iMac monitor.  Is that possible?

Depends on what iMac model you have. 2011 and later then you can using target display mode. 2009 and 2010 only with the 27" models.

  • Problems hooking TV to iMac

I have an iMac, 21.5" (late 2009 model)
I have a Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter
    I have a 4 metre HDMI Cable
Plugged the Mini Display Port into my iMac:
    Code:
    http://i56.tinypic.com/wlc0p2.jpg
    Plugged the HDMI into it:
    Code:
    http://i51.tinypic.com/2myzps3.jpg
Then plugged the other HDMI end into my TV:
    Code:
    http://i52.tinypic.com/2uhqngm.jpg
Switched the channel onto the HDMI 1 (which the Cables plugged into)
went on my iMac to detect displays, but nothing...
    what am I doing wrong?
    (first time doing this obviously)
All plugged in but when clicking on 'Detect Displays' it just does nothing, nothing happens... and on my LG TV it just says 'No Signal Detected' :-/
My TV picks up the HDMI because when all is plugged in, the HDMI 'tab' is highlighted (to click onto) but when the HDMI it taken out of the Adapter, the HDMI 'tab' goes grey... so the TV knows the HDMI is plugged into something to use, but the iMac isn't detecting the TV, and the TV just shows 'No Signal' on the Screen....
Im wondering could there be something wrong with the Adapter itself? but then again if something was wrong with it... the TV wouldnt know that it's actually plugged into something for the HDMI 'tab' to become highlighted.

I've got my new Neet wires today...
when plugging in the Neet Adapter and Cable, the TV didnt pick up a HDMI connection,
so i've plugged in the cheap Adapter I bought first with the Neet HDMI Cable and the TV picks up a connection, and the iMac flashes Blue a few times....
but still No Signal on the TV and the iMac doesnt 'detect' my TV!
