Hooking up iMac G5 (2005) to hdmi

I have an old iMac G5 (2005) that has been sitting in the basement for years and so I thought I would put it to good use. I want to hook up an hdmi (ultimately to hdmi mini) to the computer. I'm planing on using it as a spare monitor for when i do video shoots. It will have a live feed to it. So what adaptor do i need to go from HDMI Mini to the iMac? Thanks!

Unfortunately the best resolution you'll get out of the iMac G5 is 720 x 480 capturing Firewire as VGA signal with an Elgato adapter.  There are no HD capture options that I'm aware of that will let you view the Mac Mini on the iMac.   It wasn't until the Intel iMac you had DVI video capability.  And VNC only works well between Macs of the same CPU architecture.  G5s are Motorola/IBM, whereas, all the newer Macs are Intel architecture.  Now one possibility, is to do a screen sharing over iChat, but that would be very slow.

Anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

For the "Arangements" option to appear, the external display must be turned on with the correct input selected and connected to the computer.  Then close system prefs, reopen, go to "Display" and "Arrangement" will be along the top.

You would need either the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (MB572Z/A) or Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (MB570Z/A) depending on the input(s) on your TV.

I am selling my iMac G5 2005 to a friend, how do I do a factory reset?

    See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/selling.html
Be aware the friend should know that 10.5.8 is the maximum operating system, and if they want to use Classic, they can't upgrade it past 10.4.11.

  • G5 imac isight  2005 - can i use this osX 10.5 cd?

I bought an imac G5 2005 running tiger for my niece.
    Processor 1.9GHz PowerPC G5 2.1GHz PowerPC G5
she wants a new magic mouse or trackpad now! I think the trackpad is out of the question as it needs 10.6.4, which i think you can only get for intel machines?
But I had a brainwave - i have a mac mini bought 2008 which came with 10.4.7 and a "CPU Crop-in DVD" v10.5 to upgrade it free to leopard. I never used this dvd as i loaded server software on my mac mini.
My question is - can i load this "CPU Crop-in DVD" v10.5 onto my nieces G5 imac? or do imacs have different os software?
If so, will we then be able to software upgrade it online to 10.5.8 so she can buy a magic mouse?
    Any advice appreciated thanks

Try it and see - if it works, you can use the [10.5.8.combo update|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1058com boupdate.html], which is the last iteration of Leopard.

The most obvious suspect is the PRAM battery.
Depending on precisely which G5 iMac you have:

  • Help hooking up IMac Chrome 24" to Onkyo tx-606 to Panasonic Plasma

I have a 24" iMac Chrome, a Onkyo TX-606 A/V receiver and a 50" Panasonic Plasma TV (Can't recall the model, but it is a 720p plasma TV). I ordered the DVI to HDMI cable, from Apple, to hook all this up together. The TX-606 and Plasma work great together with a DVD player and DirectTV box as sources. When I hook up the iMac I get a blue screen on the TV.
I can get the iMac to detect the device. It shows a screen panel for TX-606 and defaults the resolution to 1280x720, which I understand is correct. However, I can't get the TV to display the image. I've cycled the iMac, the TX-606 and the TV to try to get these in synch.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this? I think it has to do with the TX-606 but, since other devices are working correctly with it I hesitate to blame it.
Where do I start to debug this issue?
    Shouldn't this "just work"?
    Jeaux

hey there Jeaux & welcome to Discussion!
1-is your iMac video & analog stereo connected directly to TV? if so, select the input on the TV to
the one that has the iMac input.
2- is your iMac audio & video connected to the AV receiver? if so, you may need to select the input
on the AVR & the TV. AVRs look for audio inside the HDMI connection like you'd get w/ a BD
player, not separately like you have w/ the iMac.
3-check out the AVS forum for some good info in their Mac HTPC chat. see this:
    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=115
my 17" CD iMac is DVI>HDMI to my 42" Sony @ 1920x1080i w/ a TOSlink optical to my Sony AVR, so i have a set-up like #1. but if you have a set-up like #2(had similar situation w/ using my HD cable box), i got no image if i didn't select the audio input on the AVR & the video input on the TV.
    good luck.

  • Thunderbolt iMac - mini-dvi to HDMI - Image not sharp on TV

I am trying to use my TV as a second monitor for my newish iMac.  I used to do the same thing with my macbook (2006) with a mini-dvi to HDMI adapter.  The signal then was crisp and typical of 1080p.  I recently tried two different mini-displayport to hdmi adapters to output my monitor from the thunderbolt port of the iMac.  The first was a cheap one and the second was a better one.  Each time, the TV says the signal is 1080p, but the image is blurry, although sound does work.
The TV and the HDMI cable is the same as my old macbook which worked perfectly.  Also, I have been using Windows 7 with bootcamp and the image is the same.  This limits the problems to the graphics output, port, or adapter.  As multiple adapters still have issues, I don't know it anything else may help it.
Is there much possibility that there is something with the computer, either graphics card or port itself, that could cause this, or maybe something software wise that could be an issue?

Check under the system settings to make sure you are putting out the correct signal. If it is set at the correct resolution then your TV doesn't have enough Hz. Hope that helps!

  • IMac, mini-DVI to HDMI connection stopped working

    Hi,
I recently switched from my good old white plastic iMac (late 2006, 20", Lion, 10.7.5 ) to another, slightly newer alu-body iMac (mid 2007, 20", Mountain Lion, 10.8.3).
As before I used a Samsung SyncMaster as "desktop extension" connected via mini-DVI to a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter ( http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0088BUT40/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00 ).
The Samsung monitor is recognized, system information is able to report about it, system logs are fine, nothing special - BUT: no image. The Samung display remains dark.
I already searched the internet, the community, the whatever came to my browser.
I think it is an HDPC or windowserver issue but I have no idea if I can fix it.
    Any ideas?
    Sven

Do you have the correct HDMI input selected in the TVs menu...?
Aditionally, there might also be settings for connecting a PC to the TV.

    Hi everyone,
with my new iMac (purchased 2 weeks ago) I have the problem that my 2nd display will stay black after I connected it to the Thunderbolt port. The display shows the blue background for a split second, then i goes black (and stays that way). I find the following lines in the log file:

The display is an AOC e2343F2, with two HDMI and one VGA port. I am using a Mini-Displayport to HDMI cable to connect the display. This worked with my Mac Pro (from 2006, AMD Radeon HD5770) without a problem.
Is this a problem with the in 10.7.x included drivers?
    With the new Thunderbolt port?
I tried it with 10.7.2 and 10.7.3 on the iMac and the Mac Pro. It works like a charm on the Mac Pro, but not on the iMac. Do I need to buy the overpriced Apple adapter and can't use my adapter cable anymore?

Just a theory.  Looking at the log errors you showed the system cannot get the display bounds.  My theory is that the display is not able to pass the EDID (extended display identification data) through a TB port.  While your 5770 could handle it the TB can't.  Again, it's just my theory.
Another thing to check is your Displays system preferences.  See if the Display is showing in the Arrangement tab.  If so click Detect Displays and also Gather Windows to bring the second monitor's Displays preferences on to your main monitor.  If you get this far then set the appropriate resolution and refresh rate (if refresh rate is shown).
If there is no Displays Arrangement tab then the system doesn't even know the second monitor is connected.  I don't have a solution for this problem since I don't have TB.   Although the resolution is not as good you may have to try a VGA adapter for that monitor.  No guarantees that will work either of course.

Hp HDX 16t laptop Windows vista home prem, 64 bit, 4 gig ram, (512) 9600m gt nvidia geforce video card.
Hi I have a hp hdx 16t laptop, hooked it up to philips 52 inch LED tv via an  hdmi cable and get video on tv but no audio.  Only sound from laptop, My tv is set to computer hdmi 1 and all drivers up tp date.  I have goolged numerous solutions and none have worked.  If anybody has the time, a solution would be just great.. jd.

If you have the the video drivers installed for your notebook's chipset and the discrete video module then you should see something similar to the folowing image. This is on my loaner HP Pavilion dv7-4180ea. When I connect the notebook to my Philips HDTV the operating system switches to HDMI audio after I direct the video to the TV with the function keys on the notebook.

  • What cables do I need to hook up iMac i7 to digital audio receiver.

Just bought a new iMac Quad i7 and expect delivery in two weeks. I would like to hook it up to my audio receiver so I can watch DVDs with full 5.1 Digital Surround. The receiver has optical/digital inputs.
The guys at the Apple store seemed clueless.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hello artandink
You will need a 3.5mm Toslink Adapter or a Toslink cable with a 3.5mm end to plug into the iMac's Audio Output Port.
The Toslink cable from the Apple Store has a 3.5mm Adapter to Toslink included:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/TL955LL/A
The one from OWC already has a 3.5mm on one end for the iMac's:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/CBLAOPTMT/
Some do not and you'll have to order the 3.5mm Adapter separately:
