Hooking up iPod to another PC

My 3rd gen. ipod's itunes library lives in another pc which is currently being repaired. I purchased a laptop for the time being. Question is, how can I transfer my library in my ipod to this laptop without losing everything in the ipod, as I'm afraid to attach it to this laptop. A friend already loaded a few song into the itunes library that came installed with this laptop. Any help is appreciated.

If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your new computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod
You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod, the transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

  • IBook won't recognize iPod (yes, another one . . .)

A while ago, my 20GB, third generation iPod stopped working properly when connected to my iBook. When it was connected to the iBook, it would transfer a few songs, and then iTunes would freeze. Disconnecting the iPod and reconnecting it would cause a few more songs to be transferred, followed by another freeze.
I recently went through my iTunes library and editted the genres on most of my songs, so there were about 4,000 songs to be updated. When I hooked the iPod up to the computer, it copied over a few hundred songs, and then froze again. Each time I would reconnect it, it would transfer about four songs, until it eventually stopped transferring any songs -- it would just immediately freeze. I tried removing the songs that it was freezing on from my library, but this didn't work.
I tried resetting my iPod, but that didn't work. I ran the Disk Check, but that told me that my iPod was fine. Then I used the iPod updater to restore it to factory settings.
Now, the iBook doesn't recognize the iPod at all. Connecting the iPod to the iBook causes the iPod to display the "Do not disconnect" screen, but it doesn't appear on the desktop and it won't appear in iTunes. If I unplug it, I am treated with the message informing me that it has no unreadable volumes, and offers me the options of Ejecting and Initializing.
I've looked through this forum and the Support listings, and tried whatever I could find, but nothing has seemed to work. Is there anything that I'm failing to do?

Okay . . . after shutting the computer down for a few hours and turning it back on, iTunes is suddenly willing to recognize my iPod. I've started moving my music back onto the iPod, but it's still freezing every so often, so I have to either force quit iTunes or disconnect the iPod to continue. I'm sure that this isn't the best idea, but is there a better way to accomplish this?

All your media should be in your iTunes library. Then you can place it on any device you wish. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

When I hook my ipod up to my mac I used to get the Itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted error message. It would then sync all my song to the ipod but when I ejected it, none of the songs would be on the ipod. Now I hook it up and I get the Mac OS X can't repair the disk error message. Then the spinning colored pinwheel pops up and I can't use iTunes. Please HELP!!!!!!

Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.

  • How can I copy songs from one iPod to another?

I received a new iPod Classic (last generation) and I'm trying to transfer my songs from my old iPod Nano (also last generation).
My iTunes library is also split up between my two parent's houses and I only have half the songs on my Nano in this computer's library.
Is there a way to copy only the songs on the +iPod Nano+ (not the iTunes library) and drop them onto the new iPod?

*Is there a way to copy only the songs on the iPod Nano (not the iTunes library) and drop them onto the new iPod?*
You can't copy directly from one iPod to another, you have to copy the songs back to iTunes and update the new iPod from there. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • How do I transfer music from one ipod to another?

Hello, I need help transferring music from one ipod to another? I got a new laptop and now my itunes library does not contain a lot of my music!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
There is more than one way, but to get it all on all devices, connect the first device to iTunes and choose to transfer the music from the device from the file menu. Once everything is in iTunes connect the second device, select the device in the device list, navigate to the music tab and check the content you wish to sync, click apply/sync.

The geniusbar told me what to do, I understood but there is still a problem for me >:/ It's not showing up though. Like "device."  Nothing is happening, and I tried as soon as I got home. Then after half an hour, then an hour, then 3 hours. My problem is that it's not showing up! It's stuck in recovery mode! There's still like 25% battery. So I have no idea why.

how do i download music from one ipod to another ipod ?

It needs to go through your computer's iTunes library.  If all the songs on the iPods are already in your computer's iTunes library, just sync each iPod as desired from your iTunes library.
If the songs on your iPods are not in your iTunes library, the approach here is to first off-load the song files from the iPods to your computer's hard drive.  Then, add the song files to your iTunes library, so that it is "consolidated" with ALL of your music.
You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store.  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once you have ALL of your music in one iTunes library on your computer, sync your iPods as desired.

You cannot copy content directly from one iPod to another. If the music was purchased from the iTunes Store, you have the following options:
    - sync the iPod to your computer, transfer the content to iTunes, and then connect the other iPod and sync from iTunes
    - use iCloud (which requires iOS 5).
    - download the music from from the iTunes Store to the second iPod. See:

It needs to go through iTunes.  But there is no way to transfer songs from iPod to iTunes library (except for music you purchased from iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, add them to your iTunes library.  You can then sync your iPhone to the iTunes library.
Alternately, if you sign up for the iTunes Match service, your iTunes music library on your computer will become available from iCloud.  You can set your new iPhone (assuming you bought a "new" iPhone) to sync from iCloud, instead of from your computer's iTunes.  All of your music will be available wirelessly, wherever you have an Internet connection.

  • How do you transfer music from one iPod to another?

How do you transfer all of your music from one iPod to another DIRECTLY from that iPod? Not all of the music on my iPod is in my library so I'm not sure how to transfer it, if it's even possible.

Search for an app that may utilize BlueTooth to do that.

  • How to transfer songs from one iPOD to another one?

On my old iPOD I've collected songs for various libraries (from friends and my two computers) but stupid iTUNES won't let me transfer my songs from this iPOD back to Library.
So, now when I've got a new a iPOD, I have to put all the songs there again, because iTUNES again won't let me transfer songs from one iPOD to another iPOD, when both are connected to the same computer!!
    What should I do?
Apple as an innovator company should come up with an update to solve this easy issue.
      Windows XP Pro

Haven't you got your songs in iTunes? Just connect your new one and it will update from your Library.
However if you have deleted them from the PC, there are a number of third party utilities that can retrieve the files from your iPod.
