  • Help hooking up a VCR to iMac

    Hi,
Could someone please advise what connectors, cables, apps I would need in order to hook-up a VCR to an iMac (7,1) running 10.5.8? Been putting off transferring videos but the time has come so would really appreciate any advice.
    Thanks!

The best entry-level interface is probably the Canopus ADVC-55. This has composite and S-VHS inputs, so if you get one of those SCART to three phono leads (left, right and composite video) you can plug it directly in. The device connects to a Mac through a FireWire 400 lead (so you need a Mac that does have FireWire - and a 400 to 800 lead if it's only got an 800 connection) and requires no drivers: it should be instantly recognized by any video recording program, including iMovie.

  • What cables do I need to hook up my vcr to a minidv

Hi, I want to take my home videos (currently on vhs tapes) and transfer them to my mac mini computer so I can create dvds using imovie and idvd. I have the Sony DCR HC32 minidv (that has the "pass-through" feature). What cables do I need in order to hook my vcr up to the minidv, and what cables do I need to hook my minidv up to my computer? Thanks.

VCR to Digital Camcorder using whatever the highest input interface the camcorder has in common with the VCR (be it S-Video, etc.).
You need a FireWire cable to connect the Camcorder to Mini most likely if its a Sony unit. Check the manual. You will need a Mini-FireWire (probably 4-pin) to 6-pin adapter (this side plugs into your apple mini).
That should do it, most likely iMovie will detect the Camcorder and start sucking down video.

  • How to hook up VCR to my computer?

    Hello,
I'd like to hook up my vcr to my computer to convert my vhs tapes to dvd.  I have 8866-VTP video card and have WinProducer, Asus DVCR and Premiere 6.0.  So far have been unable to get it right.  Using composite cables with sound going to line-in on my SB Live 5.1 card and video composite into s-video adapter.  Have 4.13.01.2750 drivers but do not know how to install 3000 drivers once downloaded from the internet.  Bios is 4.17.00.24.76.  Any help/suggestions would be great!

to be 100 percent uninstall existing nvidia graphics drivers from add/remove then reboot
dont let windows install old drivers again
then just click on file you d/l and it should install
no idea on the other only just got a gf capable of it myself

  • Can I connect a macbook pro and an ibook g4 via ethernet with ibook in target disc mode?

Well, that's the question, really. I just bought a refurb macbook pro as an upgrade for my sister's elderly ibook - which has been a great computer, but which can't run any system newer than Tiger, and which has an extremely crowded hard drive. We began setting up the new computer last night, and got to where we were instructed to use migration assitant to transfer files from the old machine. This is where things fell apart.
    1. Although both machines were on my sister's wireless network, the macbook pro did not see the ibook.
    2. When we tried to connect the machines via firewire, we had a new problem - our particular macbook pro does not have a firewire 400 port. Same problem when we thought of connecting my sister's extermal verbatim drive. The macbook pro recognized the drive when we connected via USB, but, after asking if we wanted to use Verbatim for Time Machine, it didn't seem to see it when we answered "Not now".
I have ordered an adapter for our firewire cable, but, in the meantime, I have an ethernet cable at home which I used to transfer data from my older iMac G3 to an eMac. Can I use this cable while putting my sister's ibook into target disc mode, or must I wait for the connector? It is VERY frustrating having such a hard time moving information from one Mac to another. I've been a Mac fan (and evangelist) for years because Macs are generally easy and reliable. But now we're stuck.
I've been reading the boards and understand that target disc mode is the way to go, since we can't use migration assitant to move files between an Intel machine and a PPC. The new macbook pro is running Lion, while the old iBook is running Tiger 10.4.11. Neither of us has any experience with Lion, though we've both used Macs for many years.
    TIA!

Thanks, Niel! As it turned out, I had a LaCie rugged drive at my place which had both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 connections and cables. So I hooked it up to the old iBook, pulled my sister's stuff onto it as instructed in the ppc to intel thread, and then hooked it up to the Macbook Pro. Problem solved! - almost. We did have two issues:
    1. My sister has a lot of music - more than 12 gigs were on the iBook's hard drive, but only about 6 made it onto the Macbook Pro. Why is that? I also got a message, when I was trying to move the music folder from the old library onto the new one, that OS X needed this folder and it couldn't be modified. Again, why is that? How, then, do you move files from a PPC to a machine running Lion? Again, a lot of her music files did make it over, but not all of them.
    2. All her photos did seem to come over - in duplicate, maybe even in triplicate. That is so annoying! The same thing happened to me when I was migrating between my old eMac G4 and my iMac G5. Why on earth does iPhoto do this, and how can we make it stop?!
But we did manage to get a lot of her stuff onto the new machine. When we get the adapter, she'll be able to add the files that are on the Verbatim drive. You've been very helpful!

  • Recording from VHS onto ibook

To record video footage from a VCR onto my ibook HD do I need a video digitiser? If so, which one and where can I buy it?
    OR
Can I use my digi-camcorder with firewire as a digitiser to record direct to my ibook (without having to record anything on the camera)? If so, what cables do I need? (the camera has S-video, too)
    Thanks for any help!

your camera should work i know people do it check google for any sites about it though i don't have time right now to look for you and i don't know any since i've never done it before.

  • Help connecting my VCR/DVD combo and my Wii

I have a TV with a built in VCR (that doesn't work), so I have VCR/DVD combo.
I would like to hook up my VCR/DVD combo and my Wii but I am not sure how with my HD DVR box.
The HD DVR uses the only audio/video plugs that are on the TV.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

FROM BACK OF TV---- COAX---- TO AV SWITCH
    TV on channel 3
FROM AV SWITCH--- RCA(red yellow white)------ TO DVD
FROM AV SWITCH--- RCA(red yellow white)------ TO VERIZON BOX
FROM AV SWITCH--- RCA(red yellow white)------ TO WII
If your AV switch does not have enough hook ups... may want to buy a bigger one OR hook one device in the front RCA jacks... I personally would go with the Wii in the front.....
once hooked up, the TV is on channel 3... and the AV swithch is switched to whichever device you like
If you use the RCA jacks on the front of the TV, you will need to change the input selection of your TV, in order to view the device plugged in there
    hope this helps
    if not, I reccomend either
    A) contact the AV switch for support on walking you through hooking their equipment up
    OR
    B) get a local teenager/friend/family member/coworker/etc to come hook it up for you.... maybe make them lunch or buy them beer or something

  • Use my ibook g3 as a "print server"

Im interested in knowing if I can use my ibook g3 to be my networks print server.
As in hooking up ibook g3 to my network, then hooking up my printer to the ibook, and then print through it from my macbook. Does this make any sense? I hope it does. If this is possible please provide me with details on how to do this. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to - I'm doing a similar thing but using my iMac as the 'print server' so that I can print from my iBook over the wireless network.
Go to Sharing in System Preferences and tick the box for Printer Sharing. It should now be set up automatically, but you can check the printer is being shared in the Printer system preference.
(The iBook will need to be on all the time if you want to always be able to print - it can't be sleeping).
The printer should show up under 'Shared Printers' in the options for printing when you want to print on your MacBook (at least it does in 10.4, I've not upgraded to 10.5 yet so I don't know if it's different).

  • Using iBook moniter as tv screen

    Hello,
I just bought the polar express for playstation 2 (is it ever going to come out for mac?) and after I bought it I realized I wanted to play it on the train to the east coast this chriistmas. Obviously I dont want to bring allong a bulky TV, so I was wondering if there was a way to hook my PS2 up to my iBook's moniter? If so what hard/ software do I need?
    Happy November 27th
    Zack

I suppose you could buy one of those USB-based TV tuner devices, but I think they run at least $150, maybe $250, so that'd be a pretty expensive way to go... (Of course you'd benefit by being able to use your Mac as a Tivo-like device in the future)

  • Can I use 'software update' for another computer hook up via firewire?

My wife has a powerbook that has problems. I had to re-install the original software and back up her files. The problem is I can't get on the internet either hardwire or through airport. It says the password I am giving is incorrect. I have no problem getting on line with my ibook. So my idea is this, Can I hook her powerbook up to my ibook using firewire and then use software update to update her opertaing system. She has 10.2. Thanks

You can manually download the updates and copy them via firewire to the other Mac. Once the updates are on the other Mac, you can run them from there.

  • Canon GL2 with FW hooked up does not open import window in imovie

I have my Canon GL2 hooked (set to vcr) up with FW to my Imac and Imovie does not open the usual window to allow import. It use to work, but now I am concerned the FW port is fried or something. Is there something obvious I am missing? Did I fry the port when I turned on the computer?

You can check that your FW bus is ok by opening the System Profiler and verifying that it is seeing the FW bus. If it's not listing anything try shutting down and unpluging the computer. Leave it unpluged for 10 minutes or so and the plug in, reboot and try again.
Other than that, you will get more info if you post this question to the iMovie forum, since that is what you are using.

  • Tips, warnings re iBook and VGA monitor?

    Hello,
Sometime soon we are going to buy an inexpensive VGA CRT monitor to hook up to our 12" G4 iBook. Why bother? Trauma to the iBook's screen leading to a still usable but very odd display with a back splotch and radiating lines of varying thicknesses.
Anyway, we found the VGA connector. Have any of you had bad experiences or problems with this type of connection? Advice?
    Thanks,
    dick glendon

I used the VGA cable from my G3 ibook to an external LCD monitor, since the ibook doesn't have the resolution that the monitor recommend (1280x1024), the image was displayed at wrong proportion. Also I have problem to match the color, contrast and brightness.
I wonder an apple cinema would be a better choice?

  • Connecting a performa 6400 to a iBook G3 700 mhz

I could use some ideas on how to access my performa 6400 by hooking it up to my G3 iBook. I don't believe the Performa has a pci card.

Yes, the COMM slot is at the bottom of the vertically-oriented motherboard, so the card is parallel to the floor of the chassis. Not so long ago, one could find a dozen of those motherboards listed at eBay, but now - I was fortunate to find one. Even with a G3 processor upgrade, the seller of this motherboard will have to settle for substantially less than his Buy-It-Now price.

  • IS THERE HARDWARE TO COPY FROM VCR TO THE ELEMENTS SOFTWARE?

I am considering purchasing  the elements 8 to make movies with.  However, I have a vcr tape we made some time ago that I want to copy from the tape to the software to edit and make a training movie.  Is there hardware that comes with the elements that I can hook to the VCR and to the computer to copy the movie?  Thank you folks for the help.
    Dusty

My way is probably a bit longer but it works for me as I don't need to do this way often, BUT I use my Toshiba VCR to DVD burner.  You can buy them fairly cheap, mine has a hard- drive but they come without and just burn directly to DVD.  Then I move the resulting VOB file from the DVD to my computer and use it in Premiere Elements.
another way I've done it is to hook up my mini-DV camera to the VCR and tape it onto the camera and then CAPTURE in Premiere Elements.
    Have fun!
