Hooking up nano to a stereo

I was just wondering if anyone is using their nano with their stereo. I have the 3rd gen 20 GB ipod hooked up to my stereo through the monster cable for ipod and it works great. I was wondering if the nano would work the same?

I hope this is not out of context, but can I use the color docking station (I have an iPod Color 20GB) to hook my wife's nano up to our stereo? I know it says that they are not compatible, but is this because of the size or the electronics in the docking station? Thanks for letting me jump in with what may be a dumb question.

  • Using the Nano through a stereo

Not sure if this is the right forum, but we have a line to hook our nanos into a stereo and play back. We have a pretty good Panasonic rack system and the ipod playback is horrible. I tried it on a Aiwas system that is not as old as the other, and it sounds better. Is it best to use these types of cords, or use an FM modulator?

The previous poster was right; at 128k, the music is OK to listen in the car and other places where the environment or equipment won't show as many imperfections.
Apple makes a little docking station that has a power input and an output that you can run to your stereo. I use a Monster Y-cable to take the output from the Docking Station to my stereo, which works just great.
However, I've found I had to re-encode my music collection (all 1500 CD's) for different uses. For home use, I don't use Joint Stereo, and I record at a minimum of 192k. It takes more space to hold the music, but it's worth it!! Even my non-audiophile friends can hear imperfections when listening to the 128k versions of my music through my home stereo.
The 160k AAC encoding is a nice option, but I like using non-Apple proprietary encoding, and am thus forced to use the higher bitrate.

  • CONNECTING nano to HOME STEREO & CAR STEREO

I hooked the Nano up to my home and car receivers via: mini-cable > AV cable.
    AUDIO SOUNDS VERY MUFFLED:
    • Its definitely not the quality of the mp3's.
    • EQ(if you can call it that) is on "off".
    • High volume, my home receiver turns off (power overload or something)
    • Low volume, low output
    • Wires are good (monster cables)
    Am I doing something wrong?
Do I need to buy a dock adapter to regulate power & output?
You'll know this by whether you have to use the ipod or the speakers to turn up the volume.
If you can use either volume controls, then it DOESN"T regulate output.
If you can ONLY use the speaker/receiver volume control, then it DOES regulate.
Please try your docks and reply, haha.
    Thanks for your responses.

Every time you buy Monster cables, an electrical engineer cries. Seriously, don't waste your money on their snake oil.
That said, they ought to work for this application. You shouldn't need a dock; that just gives you the same signal at a more convenient physical location.
The volume level of the ipod should be as high as possible without distorting the signal you hear out of the stereo.
I don't know what to tell you; my nano sounds fine when I play it through my stereo exactly like you're doing it. (Not as good as a CD, but as good as what I hear in my ipod headphones.)

That is how far I had gotten:
    Audio sounds muffled,
even with any EQ or Volume setting on either receivers(home&car) and ipod. I tried all these variables.
I even got monster cables to make sure it had good connection.
Does a ipod dock regulate output?
    Does anyone know?

  • Does iPod nano work with Stereo Connection Kit?

Does anyone know if the iPod nano will work with the Stereo Connection Kit w/ monster cables? Someone bought both for me but the connection kit doesn't say it works with the nano anywhere on the box or in the instructions. Thanks for your help

The dock should work if you line it up right but everything else will work just fine. Realise you need USB to sync with a computer but Firewire is fine for charging.

  • Using ipod nano with car stereo?

sorry if this is a blonde question, but I have just got a new (to me) car which has a sony gtx cd300 stero in with an ipod connection. Ive bought a new ipod nano, plug it in, nano says "OK to disconnect". stereo display does not seem to recognise. Dont suppose anyone can advise me? Nano works fine on its own. stereo works fine as cd and tuner, just cant get it to work with the ipod? arrgh! Very very grateful for any help or advice. Kind regards Lindsay

As long as your headset is 3.5 mm jack, you can use it with your ipod. Same goes with an auxilliary cable to your car if it is not bluetooth enabled.

  • Having Trouble with sound when hooked up to my Car stereo

I have hooked up my iPod to my car stereo and it sounds horrible. I dont know if the guy that did it, did it wrong but all support is telling me is that to hook it up with the cords i have. Any help from people? thank you

Does your ipod play through your car speakers.
    Im guessing it does.
I am rather confident that your problem is solely thanks to the volume not being correctly done. To make it louder, use the car not the ipod.
Keep the ipod on a low volume.
    Good Luck!

  • Hooking up iPod to home stereo receiver?

Hi, all. I just bought my first iPod, a classic. I wanted to hook it up to my home stereo receiver, an NAD made back in '88. It has inputs for phono, tape, CD and video.
I went to my local Apple store and told the sales person I wanted to hook up my iPod to my receiver. He sold me a Belkin cable that goes from the headphone jack on the iPod to the RCA inputs on my receiver. Only problem is, I can't figure out how to make it work. So far I have questions:
    1. Which input should it go into--tape, CD or video?
    2. How loud should I set the volume on the iPod?
    3. Do I need to do anything with the "settings" such as the EQ or "clicker"?
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered a dozen times in the past month. I ran some searches here before I posted. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    John

Whichever one makes the most sense for you (and is free to use). I'm assuming all the inputs are identical apart from the labelling to match the input selector on the front of the unit.
Hi, iBod, thanks for your answers.
The only thing I'm still unsure of is the assumption that all the inputs are identical in terms of the voltage or amperage that they can accept. For example, I know that the phono input is designed for a signal that needs preamplification and the tape input is designed for a signal that doesn't. I'm not sure about the CD and video inputs, and what I want to avoid is having the iPod damage the receiver with too much amperage or voltage or whatever.
    Anyone know for sure?

  • Playing music through nano and auto stereo, while traveling...nano is set to shuffle, but if vehicle is stopped for more than a few minutes, nano restarts with same song everytime! How do I make it really shuffle the songs

Having trouble with Nano shuffle while traveling.  It's connected to my vehicle stereo and set to shuffle. When I stop the vehicle for more than a few minutes, the music resumes with the same song it always starts with. How can I get it to keep shuffling after restarting the vehicle?

Is the iPod actually doing the music playing?  If the iPod is connected using a USB port (on the car audio system) and docking cable, the car audio system is doing music playing.  The iPod is just acting as a storage device (like a USB flash drive) with song files.  So, in that setup, it does not matter whether the iPod is set to shuffle or not, because the car audio system is playing the songs.  Any change to how it plays songs would have to be a setting on the car audio system.

  • Recording Audio with iPod Nano - Request Software Stereo Monitor

I'm posting this message hoping that an Apple employee will read it...
The iPod Nano used in conjunction with the Belkin TuneTalk Stereo adapter turns the Nano into an excellent solid-state 16bit / 44.1KHz digital audio recorder. However, there is no visual indication that audio is being recorded on the Nano when recording is initiated - no stereo audio monitor with a volume indicator bar for the left & right channels is present. Most audio recording applications provide a left & right stereo volume indicator bar to display real-time audio clipping or low input volume... colored green at the bottom, yellow near the top, and red at the very top for audio clipping when the input volume is too loud.
While I understand that the main purpose of the iPod is for audio playback, I would ask Apple to include a stereo audio monitor in an upcoming iPod software update (soon). Perhaps as a starting point, you can borrow code for the live equalizer monitor that appears at the top of the iTunes window when the little right-arrow is pressed in the virtual LCD screen area.
While I have had no problems to date recording on the iPod Nano, it would be reassuring to know that the device is actually recording audio. It would be unfortunate to record an hour-long interview believing everything is fine, but then discover that no audio had been recorded. The presence of a stereo audio monitor would help deter this fear.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Jaspo

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

  • Connecting nano to speakers/stereo system

Can anyone give me some info on connecting my nano 2GB to a sony cd player? I would love to listen to music without headphones or a computer? Thanks

You buy a three dollar cable with a headphone minijack on one end, RCA on the other, and plug into the AUX inputs on your amplifier. Easy as can be.
