Hooking up old speakers to new iMac

I have an old MacPro circa 2006 and I'm thinking about getting an 27"iMac . Currently, my speakers are hooked up in the back to the port with the speaker that has sound waves. I noticed that the iMac only has a port with two speakers. What is the difference between those two and will it cause me a problem hooking up the old speakers?

What's the difference between those two speaker ports (1 speaker emitting sound waves vs. two little speakers) ? And will the cable I'm now using work in the new iMac? It is presently plugged into the port with a picture of one speaker/sound waves. Sorry for being so uneducated on this.

  • Using iGlobe speakers with newer iMac

I am so happy with may new iMac, but I thind maybe the speakers that came with my old iGlobe 700 Mhz were better than the internal ones in the nex one. However they have some strange plug that doesn't fit with the contact for earphones. Does anybody know if there is some connector out there that I can use?

    Hello,
The reason it has a proprietary connector is that it was a very high powered port and it a user inadvertently connected another set of standard speakers they would almost certainly be damaged.
I've seen Pro Speakers on ebay where someone has cut off the proprietary connector and attached a standard 3.5mm jack. This works but the speakers are then very very quiet. The only real solution is either a new pair of speakers or there was an adaptor made by Griffin called the iFire:
    http://www.welovemacs.com/ifire.html
However it's no longer made and it's second-hand value is pretty high.
I too was fairly disappointed with the sound of the new Aluminium iMac compared to the iMac G4 with Pro Speakers although actually I've been living with it for eight months now. I did look at the LaCie Firewire speakers because they don't need a separate power supply but haven't been sure enough to spend my money yet!

  • Speakers for new iMac G5

I'm planning on purchasing the new iMac G5; do I need to purchase external speakers, or does the iMac come with speakers?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Spinnn,
I am sorry to say that I don't have that sound. I very rarely boot my system though (only for updates etc). I am assuming you checked all of the connections to make sure they are tight? The first time I hooked up the speakers I didn't relize they had shapes on the inputs to make sure they went into the left and right jacks. Stupid me. It is just possible you have a bad output jack on the iMac. You tried other speakers and heard the same thing. Have you tried another electrical outlet? Have you taken the speakers and out them on another computer?

  • So many issues - family of 5, i am using my wifes apple id on my iPhone, my daughter is using my apple id on touch, i need to get all iTunes content off an old PC onto new imac and i just got iphone 5 and want to be able to have evreything work - help!

5 plus years ago my wife had the only Apple ID and as a family we all used her Itunes account to buy and listen to music.  A couple years later, I (husband) bought my first iPhone - the only iDevice in the household.  When I set that iphone up, I used the wife's apple ID as I wanted access to all of the itunes music we had as a family.  So now years later, all of my Apps etc have been purchased via the Wife's Apple ID.  To make matters worse for my situation, my 10 yr old daughter got an iTouch for Christmas and i decided to use my actual (husband) Apple ID as daughter is a minor and I felt I could manage her iTouch Apps content that way.  We have just recently bought our first iMac and I had yet to understand or get to work the iCloud or the Home Sharing of iTunes.  To make matters worse, I have never synched my 3G iphone because of the whole Apple ID issue.  I should also mention that the primary 'authorized' computer for my wife's itunes account is an old PC that we almost never use anymore as it runs soooo slow.  So I am left to wonder how to go about making the transition to get the old PC 'deauthorized' after I somehow transfer all itunes files from the old PC to the new iMac.  I now have the new iPhone5 and i REALLY want to get to the point where i have my iphone on my apple id and my wife has her apple id (no iphone for her yet - probably coming soon though).  On the new iMac i have created a login for me and one for my wife.  I was able to login to itunes on her imac login and i was able to set up iCloud.  it works! - but now my calendar, contacts, photos, etc are on her profile login of the iMac!  HELP me PLEASE!!

Your Apple ID should not be causing problems with your browser. If you describe the problems you are having we might be able to help with those.
    regards

  • Photo transfer and update from 5-year-old Macbook to new iMac using Time Machine resulted in half of 2014's photos being un-viewable (only a gray triangle with exclamation point shows).  How do I fix it?

I turned on my new iMac for the first time today and set it up using a backup on Time Machine from my old Macbook, which is running OS X 10.9.5 and has iPhoto version 8.1.2.  When I went to open iPhoto on the new computer, it said I had to update the photos to work with the new version.  Now, my photos from part of July 26, 2014 and onwards do not show up in the new iPhoto.  The albums and spaces for the photos are there, but only a gray triangle with exclamation point shows in their place.  Every other photo from 2003 to half of July 26, 2014 appears to have updated without issue.  None of the fixes/rebuilds I tried worked.  When I open up TimeMachine, it has no backups that I can use for the new computer (perhaps, because I wanted to still have access to use my old backups for my old laptop so told it not to use them for the new computer).  My most recent half a year's photos are the ones I need the most.  How do I make them appear on my new iMac?

Do you still have the old Mac? Then check, if the iPhoto Library has the newer events from July 26 onwards.
If yes, copy the iPhoto library from the old Mac to the new mac by connecting both computers. And then try to upgrade the copied library.
If you no longer have access to the old mac, you could try to inherit the backup of the old Mac and try to restore the iPhoto Library from it.

  • Migrating applications from old PC to new Imac

Recently upgraded to a new Imac. Was running old PC with Windows XP and had numerous applications installed on my iPhone. How do I migrate these applications to the mac? The computers are networked and shared.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Right-click one in iTunes, find its location from the Get Info window, and copy the item at that location as well as any others to the new computer, or redownload them from the iTunes Store on the new computer.

  • Migration from old Powerbook to new iMac

I have just bought a new Intel 20" iMac. I have moved Documents, Applications and Music from an old G4 Aluminium Powerbook (running Leopard) to the iMac but which ever way I do it, be it via Migration Assistant, Wireless or via Ethernet cable, the size of the Hard Disk on the iMac increases by double. I also now have the following very annoying things happening, such as tons of Alias' on my Hard drive, .DS_Store files absolutely everywhere and a Microsoft AU Deamon appearing everytime I restart the iMac.
Can anyone advice me on how to identify the space consuming files, how to get rid of them and how best to get my files, music, photos etc from the old Powerbook onto this iMac.
    Kev Bate

    Brody,
Thank you. You have saved me from going crazy as everyone (including the Techies at the Mac shop where I bought the iMac) were adamant how easy it was to migrate using Migration Assistant. So I was getting a complex that whenever I brought something across from the Powerbook that the hard drive on my iMac was doubling in size.
I took the iMac back to the Apple shop and they restored the disk back to the original settings. I am now transferring files using traditional & physical means such as external hard drives.

  • What do I need to migrate files from old eMac to new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac and need to transfer information from my old eMac to the new one. I have not even taken the iMac out of the box, just read over the booklet.
What do I need to have to be prepared to migrate information from the start up application?  USB cable? Firewire cable? I just want to be prepared so I can get it done at one setting.  There isn't a lot of room on the desk for 2 Mac's for an extended period of time.

When you boot the new Mac, choose Migration Assistant to transfer all your data.

  • Transfering itunes from old emac to new imac

I recently upgraded to a new imac.  I transfered my files however it would not let me transfer my itunes, i believe because it was an older version.  I was able to transfer the music, however my playlist are gone, shopping cart, and purchased music etc.  I am not sure how to transfer the old into to the new computer.  I am also concerned about connecting my ipod to the new computer because I am afraid that it will delete the whole ipod.  Any suggestions?
    thanks

WELL... I finished the whole transfer last night... It actually didn't take that long (definitely not as long as the iphoto transfer took)... since the new computer is so fast. You actually don't need to download the songs again... they are there... in your old itunes folder... you just need to drag them into the new itunes application...
I lost all my playlists, which is bad, but I can live with it. it will give me a chance to go over some songs again, BUT the only thing that could not be recovered is album artwork from the songs I had purchased in Emusic.... And that was a lot of songs with great album graphics.... Somehow, itunes knows how to retrieve the art for songs purchased from itunes only...
Anyway, I agree that there should have been a better way, much less painful to do this.... but your songs should still be there... And IF I'M NOT WRONG, after you imported them to the new itunes, they are stored again, and you can erase the old folder....

  • Transfer from old eMac to new iMac

I just got a new iMac and want to transfer lots of stuff from my old eMac. I have a firewire but find that while it can be plugged into the eMac it is too large to plug into the iMac. Is there some kind of an adapter I can purchase to remedy this? Thanks.

To connect the eMac's FW 400 port to the Imac's FW 800 port, you will need a FW 6-pin to 9-pin cable.
Aside from that, you need to be very careful about transferring things from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac. I suggest Kappy's Guide; A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs

  • Uploading data from my old Performa to new IMac

I have just got my new IMac, and I must say I like it.
But I have lots of stuff on my old Performa 6400 (OS 8.6). Can I just use an ethernet cable to get it onto the IMac?
    Kind regards
    Willi

Well, doesnt seem that simple, unfortunately.
When I connect the two computers using the cross over cable, the iMac recognises the Performa, but I get an error message saying that the perfoma uses an uncompatible AFP protocol (what´s that?). With the normal cable, I get no result at all.
I have Apple talk switched on on both computers, and Apple Talk is configured to use the internet port (and yes, I added an ethernet card to the Performa a few years ago).
Do I have to configure the computers differently?
Or how can I use Firewire when the Performa doesn´t have a Firewire port?
    Kind regards

  • Migrating old macbook to new iMac

How do I migrate only applications to a new iMac? I don't want years of old system files filling up my new machine.

Migration, using the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide allow only selecting applications. However, if you fail to migrate your user account, you'll be starting from scratch, resetting all your network and user preferences. BTW, using the Setup Assistant doesn't copy ANY old system files to the new machine. As for unused apps, delete them from the old machine, using either their uninstaller apps or simply dragging them to the trash and then emptying it. IMO, you're overthinking the process.

  • Difficulties transferring data from old PC to new iMac

I'm currently helping my neighbors set up their new iMac, 27". They own an old PC that a friend built, and it runs Windows XP. The iMac came yesterday, and I was helping them get started with it this afternoon. In order to transfer data like their iTunes library, photos, etc., I took over an Iomega external HD to use. However, the PC wouldn't detect it. I used the USB cord supplied with the drive, in several different ports on the PC. The ports do work, as an iPhone I plugged into them was detected. I then tried the supplied FireWire cable, no dice there either. No recognition on the PC whatsoever.
So I went back to my house and got my other hard drive, a LaCie Starck. Plugged it in to their PC, no recognition. I formatted both drives as MS-DOS (FAT) with Disk Utility, and that did nothing.
So I went to burning DVD's. I popped one in, and proceeded to use iTunes' backup library function to burn their library to the DVD. I inserted the blank disk, and then iTunes showed that it was 'Checking media" up in the top of the application for 60 seconds or so, and then the Apple logo replaced that and nothing else happened.
I'm out of ideas here. What do I do to get this information over to the iMac? Why are my drives not being recognized? I'm quite confused.

I may be able to help re. the iTunes transfer; unfortunately, I was not able to copy the article because it is a pop up, but if you will go to the Finder Help menu (on the new Mac) and type in "transfer", one of the help articles will be instructions on how to transfer iTunes music from a PC to a Mac.
And, here is a general article which may be helpful:

  • Migrating from old G5 to new iMac

    Hello
At work, as a graphic designer, I use a 5 year old G5 on OS 10.5.8. I am about to upgrade to a brand new iMac and was wondering what the best way would be to go about transferring files/software from the G5 to the iMac.
I have been advised to use Migration Assistant but have no experience of using this software whatsoever, so would appreciate any advice or tips.
At the moment the G5 has a number of accounts set up on it. One is mine, the other is an old account belonging to the last designer I replaced, and one is an account set up by our IT department even though they never use the mac. Ideally I'd like to just have one account for the iMac to stop any confusion or problems (when I replaced the old designer my new account was set up for me by the IT dept and I've had non-stop problems with file permissions/authentification etc ever since).
Will MA get rid of the permission problems I've been having? Do I need to transfer all accounts?
Does MA transfer settings and password info, or will this need to be recorded and re-entered manually?
Would I be better off just transferring everything manually?
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

Remove the unwanted accounts from System Preferences > Accounts. Unlock the prefs by clicking the lock at the bottom and authenticating with your admin password. Select the account to delete and click the minus sign at the bottom of the window. You may be asked if you want to preserve the data or completely delete; choose the complete deletion. Do that for both surplus accounts.
BTW, you can only do this if you're logged in as admin user yourself.
When you're happy that you've got rid of all the extraneous stuff, don't use MA. On first boot of the new Mac you'll be offered the option to transfer files from another source (this is Setup Assistant). Connect the two by firewire and choose 'from another Mac'. Continue with the initial setup as prompted.
Note that transferring all your stuff may take quite a long time (hours).
Using Setup Assistant at first boot ensures you get one account with all the correct permissions.
Using Migration Assistant after creating an account can lead to serious permissions problems, duplicated data and other problems.
