Hooking up to DSL

FINALLY upgrading from my G3 tower with dialup to a new iMac Duo Core purchased yesterday.
My ISP wants to sell me a DSL modem for $99.95. A Westell DMT 36R516.
What other options do I have? I did a Google search and found refurbished versions of this modem for $44.95.
I'm not very technical, so type slowly and use small words!
Thanks for any help you can provide!

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. This is for work and I need an answer ASAP. Does Airport express require a DSL connection, yes or no simple question, the tech people are gone from my local Apple store for the weekend.

  • Verizon is incapable of hooking up my DSL...I just want to give them money, but it's impossible

Tech support is no help. I've spent 4+ hours with them on my cell in the last week. I'm now two weeks past my initial activation date. I'm supposed to call yet again and re-create my DSL order for the THIRD TIME! I figured I'd blow off some steam here amongst my peers since email to Verizon IS NOT AVAILABLE IN MY AREA! **bleep**?!
All I want to do is hand over money every month to Verizon. In return, all they have to do is flip a switch in my apartment building to turn on my service. If I could use another company, I would, but Verizon has my complex sealed up. Nice of them.
Oh well, maybe I'll have a "talk" with a Verizon truck next time I see one.

  • Using without A DSL Router

Ok so I had thought, when you hook this up, you can discard the old Router, we have SBC DSL and they gave us a 2WireRouter with only one LAN port and the DSL ( Grey Line ) So I thought Oh cool I bought this I wont need that anymore, Well I guess I do, it's the only way I can get this to work, I mean Kinda stupid if you ask me, I thought the whole Point of this was to be an APPLE Router not for me to have to hook into my OLD one. I've seen other routers out there that are the same, cheaper and with like 4 LAN hookups in the back, and it's a ROUTER you plug your DSL line into and and DONE. So QUESTION here, I hooked just the DSL Line ( GREY LINE ) and then Cat5 LAN cable to my MAC, same way I had it with the 2Wire Router, and tried manually putting everything in, DHCP all that fun stuff, IP, DNS servers all that and It picks up, but still cant get it to work ?? So Is there anyway to just hook this up without having to use the old Router with it ? And the reason I hate my old one is, it only has 1 DSL LINE, I cant plug more computers into it, Only WIreless, which is not good for Online Game-play with my 2 PC"s, I wanted to be able to hook the PC's up into this and not go through that old Junky 2Wire one. If anyone knows more about this, would be glad to know any info you have, Thanks.

Oooooh Ok, Yeah I was a bit confused, I though well seeing my 2WIRE one has the 1 DSL line and the LAN Line, plus the Wireless all built in I was like OOOHh This Apple one will work the same and give me an extra 3 LAN lines for my PC's that only run on Wireless right now. OOh well I'll keep this still, I left another Comment on what's the best way to set this all up. And yeah the way I have it set up now, is the Grey DSL line is plugged into the 2WIRE as I usually have it, and the Yellow Cat5 LAN cable is coming out of that going into the Airport Extreme then I just ran the Setup Utility and it gave me the whole what do you want to choose thing, 802. a/b or just a, I'm not sure which is faster or really what is best, so I just left it on a/b. And with the part where it say's Bridge Mode or Shared, I have it on Bridge because it says if you have this plugged into a Router, So I did that, but kinda seem's slow now compared to having it just run from the 2WIRE router.

  • Connecting DSL to a '99 PowerMac G4 (AGP)

I finally just got DSL in my area and it is all set up on my current computer. However I have an older Mac running OS 9.0.4, which has an internal modem that used to dial-up.
I am hoping I can access the web thru my older Mac as well as the new one and tried to hook the new DSL modem system to it, using the ethernet cable & router the DSL came with.
To be honest, I've been using this newer Mac for 2 years and its so different, I can't recall all the older quirks (Chooser, TCP/IP, AppleTalk etc).
Is there something I need to do to tell the older Mac to "see" the ethernet connection?
Any advice would be appreciated (and please tell me in layman's terms!) LOL!!!
    Many thanks!

Plug the Ethernet cable into the computer and set the TCP/IP control panel to connect via Ethernet and use a DHCP server. The Chooser and AppleTalk are used for services on top of the Ethernet connection.

  • DSL question

    Hello,
I'm currently still on dial-up, but am thinking of switching to DSL as Verizon has a $14.95/mo. deal for 768/kbps.
Any way, part of the deal requires they send me some sort of hardware. I'm assuming this is a DSL modem (is that correct)? Also, is there any way to hook up to DSL on my mac without using this hardware?
Last, with my current set up, I've been able to using "INTERNET SHARING" with the dial up so that she and I can be online at the same time. Will switching to DSL have any affect on this? I'm assuming not, but think that DSL may be a whole new "beast" with its own quirks.
Any other basic tips are appreciated as well.

    Hello,
I'm currently still on dial-up, but am thinking of
switching to DSL as Verizon has a $14.95/mo. deal
    for
    768/kbps.
That's kinda slow. Faster than dial-up, but nowhere
near the best speeds that are possible with DSL or
    cable.
Any way, part of the deal requires they send me
    some
sort of hardware. I'm assuming this is a DSL
    modem
(is that correct)? Also, is there any way to hook
    up
to DSL on my mac without using this hardware?
You're going to need some kind of DSL device. They
come in two basic versions: USB and ethernet. Stay
far, far, FAR away from USB. USB DSL requires
drivers, which often break when Apple updates the OS.
USB DSL is a pain to share with other machines on a
local net. USB DSL is a pain, period. Avoid.
Some DSL providers require that you buy or rent their
devices. Some will allow you to buy 3rd-party
devices. Typical rental is $5-10/month. A DSL device
in CompUSA is $80-120, depending on which one you
want to buy. You do the math...
Last, with my current set up, I've been able to
    using
"INTERNET SHARING" with the dial up so that she and
    I
can be online at the same time. Will switching to
DSL have any affect on this?
No, but there are far easier ways. If you get an
ethernet DSL device, you can also get a router. (Some
ethernet devices have a router built in.) Home
routers, including the routers built into many DSL
devices, often have a built-in switch with four or
more ports. Some have wireless built in, too. This
means that sharing ethernet DSL is easy: plug in an
ethernet cable to the switched port and whichever
computer or printer or whatever you want on the net.
Or, if wireless is available on the router, give the
    other machines wireless NICs too.
    I'm assuming not, but
think that DSL may be a whole new "beast" with its
    own quirks.
DSL is basically super telephone. It uses the same
infrastructure. Limitations include the fact that the
further away you are from the exchange, the worse
your connection speed is going to be, and there's
nothing they can do about that with current
technology except build a new exchange closer to you.
Which probably isn't going to happen soon, if at all.
(In other words, you may not be able to get more than
768, based on your distance from the exchange.)
You can talk on the phone while DSL is active. You
can use a fax machine on the phone line, too. You'll
need a filter to clear the DSL signal from your
    voice/fax line(s).
DSL usually uses PPPoE or PPPoA protocols. In the US,
it's almost always PPPoE. This is not really an
'always-on' system; PPPoE, like dial-up PPP, will log
you into the ISP's system using a specific username
and password. However, it does so very quickly, so
quickly that you usually won't notice that it's doing
anything. It will usually feel as though it's
always on. Many home routers can be set to keep the
PPPoE login on 24/7, so you really will have
always-on service. I'd check with the ISP before
doing that, though, just in case they object.
Any other basic tips are appreciated as well.
    hope this helped.
I just hooked up my Verizon DSL last night and so far so good...(I know it's not much time). It was fairly easy to do and given that the price is right, at least for me, 768 kbps is better than dial-up. (Earthlink is $22/month). My question is this:
In trying to set up an account with the VErizon software that came with the hardware and wires, filters, etc., I got a message that said I do not have "administrative rights" to set up this account, blah-blah. I called Verizon and the tech was able to get me set up and on the 'net (with Safari) but the message seemed to be that if I don't get "admin rights" I won't be able to download files and my DSL service may be compromised.
Anyone know anything about this? Is "admin rights" crucial or something I'd only need for a Verizon account/homepage/e-mail, etc.
Any advice is appreciated. As wonderful as the iMac is, it's frustrating to constantly run into these little roadblocks and speed bumps because I have an Apple product and not Windows PC, etc.
    Thanks,
    Fred

  • Remote desktop client software not active

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm a bit bewildered by this errormessage (and I couldn't get a hit when I searched for it) when I try to drag a file from the xserv to the macbook pro desktop, remote desktop client software not active.
The macbook has the ard server and connects to the xserv ppc. It connects over the internet.
The xserv is behind a iptables fw and I have forwarded 3283 tcp/udp plus 5900 udp/tcp to the server. Have I forgotten a port ?
    I've read through http://www.starkpr.com/ard.htm as well as http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070302234400232&query=vnc%2Bsimpl e%2Bset%2Bup
and tried to find out more from the discsussions here.
The macbook pro sits behind an airport which is hooked into the dsl modem. Do I need to configure port forward in the airport as well.
Connecting to the xserv and working on it works great but the copy file transfer fails.

Hi there I took new try at this and this is what finally solved it for me.
The earlier answer I got was very good advise but I had already done that bit, actually I might have overdone it a bit I had checked all the boxes under the useraccount on sharing.
    Back to business.
Firewalling. I realised I need to open and portforward at both locations and remeber it's booth tcp and udp.
So at the xserve location I needed to forward 3283 and 5900 both tcp and udp from outside to the IPnumber of the xserve.
At home with my macbook I needed to do the same.
However this did not solve it, I had forgotten one software on the macbook. On the xserve I had installed ARD upgraded it to 3.1 AND installed the upgrade for ARD 3.1 client. The client part I had forgotten at home. So once my ARD and ARD client software matched I could connect to the xserve and drag and drop files booth ways.
ARD wasn't running on the xserve I just had it installed along with the client software.
So portforwarding in firewalls and the same software and versions in all locations seems to have solved it for me.
A small note enabling/disabling the firewall in macbookpro did nothing for me since when enabled ARD rules were in place and active so it still worked.
I hope I made some sense.

Hello all - I have a desktop and laptop on a home network with a router, hooked up to DSL service.  HP 6310xi all-in-one.  The network is working but I cannot print from either computer.  I have an ethernet cable that was marked "printer to router" when I had to disconnect everything a while back.  I assume that it should be connected and it is, but I still have a screen that says the printer is offline.  Help please!

Did you get a new router or did you move your old one and just hook it up again?
    What operating system?

  • Airport Express speakers not showing in itunes

    Hi,
I had my Airport express working nicely, but then (foolishly), played around with it a bit and I'm now in a world of pain. I have a G5 imac talking to an AE base station hooked to a DSL router and my stereo.
    What's not working:
    1. The remote speakers don't appear in itunes.
    2. The setup assistant & admin utility can't automatically detect the base station, either through the assistant or by the admin utility. (not sure if this is related or not).
    What is working:
    - I can change the settings by manually selecting the ip address of the base station and logging in.
    - I can connect to the wireless network, and I can access the internet through the base station.
I've tried factory reset (both holding reset for 10 seconds & holding reset for 10 seconds while plugging the AE into power).
I've tried the base station with 6.2 and 6.1.1. I'm using v 4.2 of the airport admin software. I'm using v4.9 of iTtunes.
I've configured the base station to "Enable airtunes on this base station". I've configured iTunes to "look for remote speakers with Airtunes".
I'm just about at my wit's end. Any ideas?
    Tom

It's working again. Honestly, I'm not sure what did it but here's what I have as a setup now.
I bought a Linksys Wireless router and changed the AE from router to a client.
    I installed today's Security Update.
I deleted iTunes and reinstalled v4.9. I fiddled around a lot with turning on/off the iBook firewall as well as enabling the router's firewall.
I also added the iTunes ports (3689 tcp and 5353 udp) to the port triggering tab of the router. I restarted iTunes after all this and my remote speakers suddenly showed up.
Oddly, is that I removed all the settings that I had turned on (ports, firewalls on iBook, etc) and it's still working. I don't know what happened or what triggered it to start working but i think it has something to do with the ports. Who knows. Sorry that I don't have a more definitive solution for others who experience this.

  • Linksys

I am trying to get my Wi-Fi going with a Linksys Wireless-B Broadband router, BEFW11S4 which was hooked up to my brother's PC. He has moved out and I'd like to keep the Wi-Fi going.
I hook up the DSL modem to the router. My iBook sees the network and the signal sent out by the router but I can't get on the internet. I can get onto the 192.168.1.100 setup pages but I can't get on the Internet through my iBook. What do I need to do to fix this? Is there something in the Control Panel that I'm missing.
    Thank you!

  • Delay in loading web pages after airport express installation

Hello, I had my intel imac hooked up to dsl directly through ethernet (PPPoE), and I had really fast internet browsing. I then got an airport express, hooked it up to create a wireless network, and it worked, except that, while loading a new web page in firefox, it has a delay of about 13 seconds before it starts loading the page (spinning circle showing in the tab). Once the first items appear on the page, its very very quick, but it just takes 13 seconds to start. Does anyone know what this means, and how I can fix it?
    Kenton

Thanx! The numbers didn't help me anything, but your post reminded me: I found the DNS numbers that my ISP had provided that I had put in the Ethernet TCP/IP section in Network Preferences, and just copied and pasted them into my airport TCP/IP section. Worked great!

  • For the 1000th time... Ethernet Issues...

I read as many posts regarding this as possible... I just wanted to get all my info together so I can march home and confront the beast....
My new to me G4's ethernet port is dead. Trying to hook up to DSL via ethernet... Tested it with known good cables, DSL modem, tech support from my ISP (for settings), etc...sooo... I bought a wireless Linksys router and spent 3 hrs on the phone with them... finally got on with the G4 for about 10 minutes then lost all connectivity. Anyhooo... I am sending the router back as advised by Linksys... and trying the ethernet again...
I thought I would try a few things to revive my ethernet port so after reading yall's wise words I have the following list of to dos...not necessarily in order...
    1. Make sure cords/modems/etc are all working (DONE)
    2. Reset the PRAM
    3. Make sure the cord is plugged in prior to booting the computer
    4. Run the Disk tool utility that came with the computer
    5. Scream, cuss, jump up and down
    6. If all this fails buy a PCI ethernet card...
    Anything I am leaving out?
    Thanks so much!!

Hello! "finally got on with the G4 for about 10 minutes" would indicate that the port is not dead but could be a connectivity issue. I would get a powered magnifying glass and examine the ethernet port for problems. There can be two common types of problems. One is where an examination of the port reveals that the tiny four wires which are like little flat springs become distorted and they are not all at the same height. (all four should be at the same position) The second situation involves the wires not being bright and shiny in color. They may be bluish in color (usually from voltage spikes) and may be cleaned with a tiny wire brush or possible the edge of a small knife. Tom

  • How do I Uninstall 10.9.2 and get back 10.8.6 ?

I recently downloaded Maverick 10.9.2   I am having lots of problems.  I tried to open a Numbers file ("Recipes Numerically") stored in my Desktop Documents folder.
Instead of the Numbers Icon near the top of the dock bouncing back and forth, a new Numbers Icon appears at the bottom of the dock and does the bouncey thing. It opens a page saying "Welcome to Numbers" and wants me to click "Continue"  When I do it brings up another page. Then opens a blank numbers page titled "Recipes Numerically" with only one column. I now have lost that copious file that I've been updating for years.
PLEASE, can I get back to my old, familiar, friendly 10.8.6?

    Thanks Tony & Peter,
Unfortunately, I do not have Wi-Fi, hence no Time Machine.  I'm hooked to a DSL cable. Can I redo my operating system by restarting my
computer using the original Snow Leopard 10.6 Install DVD ?   I do have Carbonite
and have many things backed up on that. I also have files backed up on SunDisk external memory cards.
Also I have a LOT of files generated by ClarisWorks 4.0 for Teachers that are residing on my old MAC Tower. I understand that ClarisWorks will only run on OS 9 Classic. Would I be able to use my OS 9
DVD to load it onto my present iMAC 20"/2.66/2GB/320/SD/MSE/KB  that I purchased
on 05/09 ?   If not, is there a program that will convert the ClarisWorks files
into Pages/Numbers Documents that will run on Snow Leopard ?  I would like to
get rid of my old computer, but it's the only one that'll run OS 9 and open those
    files.
Thanks again for all your help.

  • Is it advisable to download platform updates over wireless macbook pro ret?

Will be downloading update on my brand new....(but, made in mid 2012)....MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display with 10.8.2 version Mountain Lion.
Will be only downloading up to 10.8.5....as the new Maverick is conflicting currently with the new ProTools 11 ,which I need to upload from a DVD...after updating the MacBook Pro..platform.  (That's the very reason I had to seek out a store with existing MacBooks still available for purchase...because I can't wait for Avid to catch up..I'm finishing a music project partially at  home.)
Read somehwhere here that downloading with a WIRELESS CONNECTION will potentially have its problems.  Input on this situation is appreciated at your earliest convenience. And if most of you feel there will be downloading conflicts with "wireless", then do you maybe suggest I hook up to DSL ethernet temorarily for the download and then simply go back to wireless connection ?
Also...don't want to cough up $300.00 for Apple's "Time Machine"...external hard drive to back up my system before downloading 10.8.5,  WHAT TRUSTED ALTERNATIVE TO THE "Time Machine" they sell is liked and doable for this system backup before updating ?
    Thanks...

Everything I own at home connects wirelessly - MBP, Windows desktop, printers, scanners, TV, etc, etc.  I have no ethernet wired devices at all.  I have a good quality simultaneous dual band 802.11b/g/n wifi router that has yet to give me problems (Netgear WNDR4500 connected to an AT&T Uverse fibre gateway).
I backup over wifi, I update over wifi - I do everything over wifi and have not had any issues updating over wifi from OS X 10.4->10.5->10.6->10.7->10.8->10.9 (with various machines too, mainly a Powerbook G4 and a late-2008 unibody MBP).  So I would say not to worry.  Depends on just how reliable your network has been for you of course.
As to your last part, I use a WD MyBook 1TB USB2 drive for my Time Machine backup (it is done wirelessly as the MyBook hangs off the Netgear router).  I also use a SeaGate firewire 800 bus-powered drive and a WD passbook USB2 bus-powered portable hard drive for bootable clones.  You can use any hard drive you like for a TM backup or clone.

How could I add a new desktop with Yosemite?

dratatat, Welcome to the discussion area!
    If
I take the ethernet cable and hook directly into DSL
modem.. it can access the internet.
??? The original AirPort base station (ABS) is
graphite and only has a single Ethernet port.
Therefore there is no way to connect your G3 via
Ethernet and the DSL modem to the graphite ABS.
OH - I thought that you plugged the DSL into the port with the circle of dots and the cable to the computer into the one with the 2-ended arrow??
    I
want to add an even older G3 desktop to the mix but
cannot get the base station to see it.
Generally the base station doesn't see a computer
connected to it. Please describe what you are trying
    to do?
I want my laptop to connect wirelessly while also having the G3 connected to the internet for someone else to be using.
    Thanks!
