Hooking up to DVI on HDTV?

Hi,
I don't know that much about computers.  I have a Lenovo 3000 J115 and I'm wondering how to hook it up to my HDTV.  I have a DVI port on the back on my tv, but don't know how to go about connecting it from the computer.  Could someone please give me some advice?

Hopefully that your desktop also have a DVI out connection, you get a dvi to dvi cable, and then connect them up. Your desktop should adjust its resolution to suit your LCD.

I have a Macbook, 13" screen, purchased in 2007.    I want to hook it up to my HDTV; I purchased a mini display port to hdmi adapter but it does not fit.   Any suggestions?

If you connect yourMacBook using a MiniDVI/HDMI adapter you will need to use external speakers for audio since the pre-2010 MacBooks will only send video through the MiniDVI or MiniDisplay Port . The MiniDVI/HDMI doesn't carry audio and there's no audio plugs on the TV to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
If your TV has a DVI input plug you can use a MiniDisplayPort/DVI adapter. Then a DVI cable to the DVI input plug on the TV. The TV will have RCA audio plugs for use with the DVI. Plus DVI gives a sharper image than HDMI.

The Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adaptor will only pass video in most cases. You will need to run a separate audio cable along with it. Likely a 3.5mm (male-to-male) cable. Or a 3.5mm (male) to red/white RCA (male) cable. Just depends on what audio input ports your TV has dedicated to the HDMI input.

  • 13" Macbook + DVI-HDMI + HDTV Problem

    Hello,
I recently bought myself a 13" macbook, which I'm now in love with!
so here's my question, I have a Mini Dvi to Dvi Adaptor hooked up to my macbook and a DVI to HDMI cable running to my HDTV (32") into the HDMI Input (on the tv.) When I goto plug it in ( either tv first or macbook first) My macbook screen turns to this hazy blue screen (looks just like the boot up screen) and Then my macbook freezes up. I've tried shutting down my macbook plugging everything in and then booting up, but still no luck it does the same thing. I just got my mac on sunday straight from apple.com .
any suggestion? I've heard this is a typical issue.
    Thanks
    Aj

no luck, I made sure the cables were super tight and plugged in properly. my tv says "no signal"
and my macbook freezes up with the blue screen.
This time I tried it two different ways, I shut down my mac book and made sure my tv was off. Turned on my tv switched it to HDMI IMPUT 1 and tightly plugged in my cables. then turned on my macbook.
After seeing the booting screen ( little apple picture and music) a light blue screen (that normally appears durning booting) appears and it freezes on that blue screen. then I tried leaving my mac book on and tv turned on to HDMI Input one and plugging it in, this time I'm able to see my desktop ( on my mac book, tv still says no signal) and I get this fogginess that appears over the screen. I can move my mouse but everything else will not respond.
any help or suggestion would be super!
    Thanks guys (and or gals)

  • Sawtooth DVI to HDTV

I have a HDTV with DVI input. I have Sawtooth 10.4 (upgraded to 1.8Ghz, 1G RAM) with the following video card.
Do I just hook the DVI output to the HDTV or is there more?
    ATY,Rage128Pro:
    Chipset Model: ATY,Rage128Pro
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-A
    VRAM (Total): 16 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x5046
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-63001-108
    Displays:
    LCD19D(TMDS):
    Resolution: 1280 x 1024
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Built-In: Yes
    Core Image: Not Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Not Supported

Forgot to ask this also. Only have one DVI on the HDTV and a couple of components. Is there a switcher or cable where the DVI input can be shared (kinda like and A-B switch), since I use the DVI for my HDMI to DVI output from my DVD Player.

  • Mini-DVI to HDTV setup not working right

    Hi folks,
I have an iMac8,1 (24" intel with mini-dvi video port) that I am trying to hook up to my 50" plasma TV for surfing the web and looking at photos from the sofa. I've hooked it up with an apple mini-dvi to composite/S-video adapter with very poor results. As soon as I plug the adapter into the mini-dvi port, the iMac changes to a 4:3 aspect ratio at a very low resolution. The video is mirrored to the TV, again at a 4:3 aspect ratio and the resolution is awful. Text is all but unreadable.
I try switching resolutions from the display preferences pane, but nothing seems to work right. There are two display detected...the iMac and NTSC/PAL. Changing the resolutions on either of them don't seem to behave properly at all...everything just stays really coarse on the iMac no matter what, and the TV is horribly fuzzy. If I unplug the adapter from the iMac, the screen returns to 1920x1200.
Any thoughts? Should I be using a mini-DVI to HDMI for the video instead of the composite/S-video adapter?
    Steve

    Hello mmogie,
The problem is not with in the adapter. The quality on the external LCD or Plasma depends the most on the graphic cards. Thats that.
And in your case your problem is the mirroring, you will get really bad quality on the external screen because you are trying to mirror it with the one on our iMac and the Plasma screen supports different resolution then your iMac does so what happens is when you mirror it the graphics cards tries to find the middle ground ...
Now what you need to do is configure the plasma as extension not as mirror (Under Display Preferences>Displays ) select the second tab "Arrangement" and uncheck the mirror Displays.
So what the graphics will do is find you nice proper resolution for your imac and your Plasma separately and you will have good quality picture, and from there you can change the resolution to tweak it a bit more...
Now to take a step further if you want your Plasma to be the primary screen for your OS X and for you to have the dock on there, run apps and browse the web, all you have to do is from the "Arrangement" tab in the Displays Preferences just point the mouse on the wthite line and click and hold to "Drag and drop" it to your second screen "the Plasma" in your case and you will see how the dock and the task bar will show on the Plasma and you take it from there....
Sorry for the long explanation, I hope this helps. Please let me know.
    Good Luck,
    Goran

  • Mac Mini DVi on HDTV - PROBLEM

    hey all,
i am using a mac mini (1.42 G4 80gb 512 combo) on a sharp HDTV using a DVI to HDMI cable.
everything works but i have a problem that it is slightly blurred, this makes text (especially small fonts) very difficult to read.
is there any way to alter this or at least improve the visual quality?
    thanks anyone who can suggest.

i am using 1280 x 720 resolution, the other resolutions have the same blurred problem but it makes all the icons and stuff bigger.
The tv / monitor is 26 inches.
    thanks

  • I just bought a Samsung S22B310B computer monitor and hooked up to my Mac Mini. I have my mac set to the 1920X1080 resolution but the entire screen (21.5") is not filled. It looks like non HD channels do on an HD TV. Used regular hook up not DVI.

Just bought Samsung S22B310B computer monitor and hooked it up to my mac mini. I have my mac set to the 1920X1080 resolution but the entire screen (21.5") is not filled. How do fill the screen? it fills the screen on other resolution settings. I have it hooked up regularly and not to the DVI hook up. I'm not a computer savvy person please help!

That monitor supports both (digital) DVI and (analog) VGA connections, so you should not need a converter or use a different adapter.
You should use the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter and a (digital) DVI cable to the monitor.

  • What do i need to hook up 2 dvi monitors to a mac mini

what cable do i need to hook up a second dvi monitors to a mac mini

    XLR8off wrote:
I think I figured it out... use the HDMI to DVI (supplied) and get a Mini Display to DVI cable for the second monitor...?
You are correct. Get the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter, in addition to using the supplied HDMI to DVI adapter.
Mini Displayport is physically identical to the Thunderbolt, and a video signal (for one monitor) can be passed through the Thunderbolt port.
Also note the max. resolutions under "video support" on Mini's tech specs:
Thunderbolt port with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
HDMI port with support for up to 1920-by-1200 resolution
That may determine which of your monitors you hook up to which port. Also don't go nuts with monitors, the mini might not be able to drive them to their max resolutions.

  • DVI to HDTV What Color Profile?

I have my iMac hooked up to a Panasonic plasma TV over DVI/HDMI cable. My TV is already calibrated on its hardware controls. I probably won't change it. *What system display profile should I use to view videos in VLC?*
Right now I'm on SRGB -2.1 I'm only concerned about viewing my videos in the right gamma. Is that pretty close??

    Close to what?
Broadcast gamma is 2.2 in CCIR 709, but that is assuming EBU phosphor.
You may not have Quicktime FCP compatibility and so the remap is not even from the same starting point.
The preferred display is a Rec709 broadcast monitor hanging off an HD-SDI card.

  • Hooking Macbook to Toshiba LCD HDTV

Am trying to hook my 2008 Macbook to my Toshiba 40RV52R 40" LCD TV, using Mini-DVI connector, HDMI cables and PC audio cables from the Macbook's headphone jack. Am getting great picture, but can't seem to get the audio to work.
Toshiba customer service says its a setting on the Macbook, Apple store employees told me it was a setting on the TV that needs to be adjusted. Can someone tell me which one is right?
It seems simple enough, so it's incredibly frustrating that I can't seem to get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

What type of audio cable are you using?

  • Mini-DVI- Svideo- HDTV problem

I have a mid-2007 iMac and I'm attempting to connect it to my 2005 model Panasonic plasma TV to mirror my desktop.  I'm using a Dynex mini-DVI to s-video adapter and have have not yet been able to view my Mac desktop on my tv.  I've tried various methods to get my Mac to recognize the tv, powering both off, one on one off, etc. but no luck so far.  I'd appreciate any recommendations.  Thanks.

I only need to temporarily connect my Mac to the TV for a fantasy football draft this Friday.  I decided to go with s-video because the 15-20 foot cable I needed was cheaper than HDMI.  I'm contemplating overnighting an Apple branded adapter instead.  Would that be better than the off brand?  Also, I've tried connecting the s-video directly to the tv and to my home theater receiver that feeds video to my tv and neither setup is detected.

  • Problem trying to connect mini-dp dvi to HDTV

Hi, i just came home all happy from buying a mini displayport to dvi, had all the cables set but it seems its not working... I dont know if i have to do something but as of now can´t see anything in the tv.
I´m using the mini displayport to dvi and a cable that is dvi-d single link to hdmi.
Might the cable be the problem? do i have to press a button in the mac? i´m totally lost here.
    Thanks!

I know certain devices require an HDMI connection to work. Part of the implementation of HDMI was to try and curtail pirating by digital copying, so many devices look for a "handshake" in order to function.
I have personally just purchased a new MBP, so I don't have personal experience with what you are trying to do yet, but I did get a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter and we have a DVI to HDMI cable at our church. If I have time I'll try it out to see if it works or not and let you know.
I do know that my Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter I just received this afternoon from monoprice.com DOES work on my Panasonic plasma TV. For $10 it might be worth getting instead of wasting time troubleshooting what you have.

  • No audio with mini-DVI to HDTV

Hi - I know this is a tired discussion but I haven't been able to find an answer. Can you help?
    Here is my tv: http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-42LE5400-led-lcd-tv
Here is a picture of the back of the tv:
I have a late 2007 (3,1) Macbook and an LG LED LCD model 42LE5400 tv. I'm trying to get audio and video to the tv. Video works perfectly but I have no audio.
I have a mini-DVI adapter connected to a HDMI cable running to the HDMI1 spot on the tv.
I also have a male-male audio cable with a y-RCA adapter (red and white ends).
I understand that the HDMI cable won't carry audio through the mini-DVI and that I may need external speakers but I want to explore all the options before resorting to that, since I don't have a stereo sound system. I do have some cheapie desktop computer speakers, however.
So. Which jack to I plug the audio cable into? I've tried lots of things, including the regular headphone jack. Still nothing.
    Thanks for any help!
    Sara

Here is the solutuion! This is a picture of the correct placement of cables, making it possible to watch an older Macbook on a newer tv.
    First, the details:
The laptop: regular old Macbook 3,1, late 2007 running OSX 10.5.8
The tv: a now discontinued LG model 42LE5400. It's a 42" LED LCD.
The cables and adapters: I purchased this set of cables online. It was pretty reasonably price, but I'm sure the same ones are available on Amazon for less. This link is for cables specific to my computer, make sure to choose the ones that'll work for your system.
    http://www.macbook2tv.com/p/mac-mini-dvi-to-hdmi-kit-with-audio.html
The kit comes with a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter, an HDMI cable, an audio cable with standard 3.5 ends, and a Y-like RCA adapter (red and white connectors). I didn't need the RCA adapter.
Attach the HDMI cable to the mini-DVI adapter and plug it into the mini-DVI port on the Macbook. The HDMI cable then runs from the computer to one of the HDMI inputs on the tv.
Plug one end of the audio cable into the headphone jack on your Macbook. The other end goes into the RGB/DVI input on the tv.
Turn on the tv, select the HDMI input and after some flashing screens you should be set!
    Hope this helps!

  • HOOKING MY MACBOOK TO LCD HDTV

Im not very smart when it comes to all this high tech crap
I have an hd lcd 32 inch tv.
it has like s video ports in the back and says hdmi interface in the front so im assuming it has one of those.
I really dont want to have to order something from apple online to do it.
Is there any way i can run to best buy or what not and purchase what i need to use my tv as a display?
IF SO WHAT IS IT THAT I NEED?! thanks

Try Radio Shack for the mini DVI to DVI cable. If they don't have one,then...
Buy yourself the mini DVI to DVI adapter cable from Apple.
Then pick up a DVI to HDMI cable from one of the Big Box stores.
