Hope I made the right decision!!

After at least a couple of weeks of debate and reading these forums minimum of twice a day, I broke down and ordered a refurb 15" 1.67ghz Powerbook vs getting a MacBook Pro. Of course the sudden availability of refurb MacBook Pros at the Apple Store kind of slowed me down but I still went with the PB. I figured as follows:
- PB is last of the PPC series and should be the pinnacle of that technology.
- being a refurb hopefully any of the screen issues etc should have been worked out.
- all my main apps would require Rosetta on the MBP for up to a year (Adobe) and this time will let the MBP get over its growing pains and I won't really be taking any of a performance hit in the mean time.
- the PB still has some desirable features such as the DL Superdrive, PCMCIA slot (I already own some cards that I can't easily replace) etc.
- taking advantage of rebates I saved about $300 vs a refurb MBP which I can use for RAM, etc. Plus I'm not sure how secure I would have been with a refurb early model MBP anyway so the savings might really be closer to $500.
- I can continue to look forward to a MBP down the road while enjoying my PB.
Anyone think I made the wrong decision? Comments welcome.

How was your refurbed PB15 when you received it. I have purchased other refurb equipment (iPods, etc) from Apple and it arrived looking like new. I am hoping that any issues with the screen etc will have been repaired/resolved before being sent out to me.
I was thinking about a cinema display with the PB especially to get the double coverage from Applecare. However, I have a 20" G5 iMac which will remain my main machine for the forseeable future with the PB just for travel and when I don't want to work at my desk. Once the whole line-up is out with the Intel processors and has been proven solid then I will re-think my hardware at that time.
I am pretty well committed to the next version of ACS anyway as I skipped CS2 and am still happy using CS1. My other main apps are the MS Office products and I will wait to see if the Intel upgrade is a major feature upgrade as well or just releasing the Universal version.

  • Worried about whether I made the right decision

I had signed up for BT Infinity on 14-06-2011 and I was moving over from VM so I made a request to move my number over to BT. I had made a upfront payment of £120 to cover the yearly telphone rental charges.
VM  came back with "matching" offer but I had attached some conditions to the new offer and said I will only accept the offer if my conditions were met. A few days later unknown to me my BT order got cancelled, which I only came to know when a BT CS called me up to inform me about the cancellation. She assured me that the payment £120 will be refunded to me within 5-7 working days.
I had contacted the online billing chat service twice and each time they told me that the refund has been authorised and I should receive my refund in the next 5-7 working days. I also posted on the billing forum and contacted the mods as suggested. I am yet waiting for somebody get back to me.
I have been waiting for this refund for over 2 weeks now and still no sign of it.
In the meantime VM couldn't "agree" to my conditions so I placed a order once again with BT, which is going to be installed next week.
I never had any billing related problems with VM and they always resolved it without any issues.
BUT now I am worried whether I made the right decision.
    Solved!

  • BT Infinity - Have i made the right choice?

    Hi,
I currently have BT Total Broadband but have today upgraded to BT Infinity which will be installed within two weeks.  I have been told that i should recieve a 40mb download and 10mb upload.
The reason for me moving to Infinity was due to the overall speed of the broadband especially with torrents (legal) before anyone asks they downloaded at 2.7kbps on a 2mb line.
Has anyone else made the same move and was it worth it?
    Thanks

Ok, BT have never published and will unlikely too on what port clamping is in place at particular parts of the day.  However, my friend was upgraded to Infinity (lucky cow) last week and suffored slow speeds.  When i went over today (and got a free chinese meal) I change the BT Home Hub 3 wireless settings to transmit a Wireless N signal only, now we are getting about 21mb download speeds and 8Mb upload speeds whereas before we where getting about 10/4 ish
But again, it depends on where you are downloading your 'friends' legal file from and what their upload speeds are and what clamping measures they have on their line!

  • Drawing in NetBeans  (Hope this is the right forum)

    Hello.
    I got a litle question.
can I draw pictures on the the frame with the GUI builder? (I mean if there is a button "draw picutre" or maybe something through the properties on the frame/panel or something like that)
or I need to override by myself its paintComponent() method in the source tab?(or I need to write the paintComponent() code manually)
I am using netBeans 6.0.1 if its matter..
If its not the right forum for my problem please tell me
    Thanks in advance , Gonen

but I got already a picture that I want to draw (JPG file)I'm sorry, my bad but I misunderstood you. So you want your application to show a picture, is that it? If so, the easiest way I know of is to create an ImageIcon with your picture, place this imageicon in a JLabel, and show the JLabel. If you need to show a picture in the background, then you'll probably need to override the paintComponent of a JPanel, draw the image there using a graphics method such as drawImage(...). You can learn a lot about how to do this here:

  • I'm afraid I made the wrong decision

I happened to bump unto this forum, and I was surprised to see a lot of "Problems" with iPod shuffle. I just purchased one about a week ago, and I hope I didn't make a wrong decision >.<

    Right.
Imagine you're an alien and visited a hospital as Wade suggests. That's the first thing you see and everyone there except a few doctors are sick. Oh, no, everyone is sick. If you would have gone outside first and seen a bunch of healthy people, you'd realize the hospital is a small sample. I for one have gotton two members of my family shuffles and they work perfectly. There are also two minis in my family which work perfectly, along with my iPod. This does not include all the people I know. I have not meant one person who's iPod was broken. Only once did someone's iPod not turn on because their brother dropped it. I reset it and bam! it turned on .
Keep in mind that I'm not going to post everyday, "My iPod works great ". That's not why there is a forum here

  • I sure hope this is the right place to ask this question.

    Hello.
Is there a place where I can record and then listen to the recording of my voice? I need to say something into it for an assignment at school.
    Thank you.

    Hello
    Open GarageBand
Click New Music Project, choose a location and click Create
In the bottom left hand corner click the + symbol and choose Real Instrument, click Create.
Click the Red record button ◉ in the bar at the bottom. You are now recording.
When you're finished click the pair of scissors ✂ in the bottom left hand corner of the window to open the editor and you can then use cut, copy and paste commands to edit as required.
Then if you need to burn to disc:
Choose Share menu > Send song to iTunes
    Open iTunes
Create a playlist by clicking the + symbol in the bottom left hand corner of the window.
Click Burn Disk ☢ in the bottom right hand corner.
    Hope that helps.

  • Need help with PC build for use with Photoshop CS4 Extended - Have I made the right choices?

    Hello,
I'm very new to the inner workings of a PC...this will be first time building one from scratch.  I know enough to be dangerous but not enough to be confident.  I will use the PC primarily for editing, secondarily for iTunes management.  I've heard that I should have, at the very least, an SSD for PS, other apps and the O/S.  I'll also have a hard drive for data storage.  Do I need yet another SSD for scratch?  If so, any recs for one?  Also, my current build (which does not include any SSDs) is about $800.  What can I skinny down, without sacrificing a huge amount of speed/performance?  I am looking for major guidance here...I'm ready to order, but I keep second-guessing my choices.  I want to make sure I get this right the first time around.  I want this machine to last me a good long while.  Any help at all will be HUGELY appreciated!

    Thanks!
    Andrea

Make sure the motherboard is the third revision as the earlier two had problems with the i5-2500K (Sandy Bridge)
I prefer Asus motherboards but doesn't mean the Gigabyte is a problem. (I note that it scored 4 eggs...)
May not make a difference in Photoshop but for Premiere the Geforce video cards with GDDR5 are preferred.
The LiteOn iHas 224 does lightscribe which is a nice touch for clients/gifts.
There is no room to save as I would consider your build minimum specs for a nice photoshop experience.
As for SSD drives...my research of reviews and articles makes me feel the technology is not ready for mission critical work. So if you are running a business then I recommend not using SSD drives. Rather look at Raptor 10,000 rpm drive for Windows and Photoshop and use the Spinpoint for storage. If not business then I've read the intel x25 SSD drives are solid but I have no personal experience with them.

  • Another "2 seconds on 3 off" problem (Hope this is the right place)

It's kinda hard to figure out what goes where around here, so if this is in the wrong spot, feel free to move it - but please tell me WHERE you moved it to. Thanks.
    The guts:
    MoBo: MSI P55M-GD45
    Processor: Intel I7-860
    Memory: 4x2GB Corsair XMS3
    Graphics card: MSI/R5750-PM2D1G HD5750 R
    Case: Rosewill Smart One
    Power: Rosewill Green 530w continuous
    HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 750GB
I put this all together the other day, minus the HD (hadn't arrived yet). I started with 2 mems after reading stories about how 4 might not register.
I started it Saturday, and it lit right up, but I shut it down quickly as it was only a test. This morning, I added my monitor, keyboard and mouse and restarted it. Up came a glorious MSI screen. I rebooted and went into BIOS just to look at the goodies, exiting without changing anything. So far, everything running smoothly.
I powered down and added the other two memory sticks and - blooie!
I now have the same problem others have articulated: press the power on and it lights up for a second or two (all fans and leds go on) and then it shuts down. If left on, this repeats and repeats...I stopped it after 15 minutes.
Cleared the CMOS by the jumper method; nuttin. Tried again using the "take the battery out" method; again, alas, no change.
So I tore it down to mainboard and CPU, undid and reseated the CPU, added more silver thermal, plugged in the power and...crap. Changed the memory to one stick. Nope. Two sticks; uh-uh. I don't have ready access to another power supply and somehow I don't think that's the problem.
Is it just me or is this happening more often than it used to? Anyone have any other roads I might travel down

Sorry, I must have overread the part where you said that the system does not turn on anymore.

  • Help me if I made the good decision

I just ordered my first mac.
I choosed to order the higher spec macbook pro 2.53 gigahertz and also upgrade the hardrive to 7200 Rpm. I thought macbook pro is better then the I mac as if needed i can carry it around and i can allways connect and external screen to it , non apple as on big screen i dont like glossy when I am at home.
My order will be shipped in 1-2 weeks, but I slept over it and I kinda think if I need that or not also so many people complain on the macbook pros, like the heat , freezing etc etc
My 7 years old Toshiba still rocks for her age;-) so I would love if an Apple computer would be the same. Are there all those issue for all the macbook pro=s or just simply some of them are wrong?
    Second
The reason i bought a higher spec macbook pro is that I can't upgrade later, i will use photoshop on it and windows and make some video editing and some gaming and in the near future i will buy for it a 24inch HD screen.,
With all that you think I need what i ordered? or not ?
    I am thinking to cancel...
    But I am hesitating
Many thanx guys / girls to help me decide !

I understand why you are choosing higher speed CPU 2.53 to future proof , but the hard drive can be upgraded yourself at a later date IF you need too as can the RAM , if you need it .
These are fast machines at base model .
I'm getting the base 2.4 Macbook pro in a few days and will upgrade the RAM and hard drive if I need too, at a later date .
I'll be using mine for some light photo/video editing , audio production & band promo artwork etc.
I'm expecting no issues at all and will check the machine thoroughly upon arrival ,if there are any problems Apple will sort them out , however ,I envisage an issue free purchase and many years of happy use .

  • Can I trust the optimizer to do the right thing every time?

    Hello,
I have a Business Objects report that is performing poorly, I kind of found something akin to a solution but I'd like a second (and third, and...) opinion about is suitability. I don't know much about BO, so I'll stick to the SQL part.
So, the query looks something like that:
    SELECT ..... FROM
-- this is the generic part of the report
< long list of ANSI joins here>
RIGHT JOIN some_table ON (conditions - non parametrizable from the report - not allowed by BO)
<some more joins for good measure>
-- end of the generic part, up to here nothing can take user parameters
    WHERE
-- this is the specific part, from here on, the conditions can take user parameters
    some_column = @some_param
....So far so simple. Now, I'm trying to find a way to push some user defined parameters in the generic part.
I can to this using package variables, something like that (very simplified form) :
CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE vars AS
    my_filter VARCHAR2(100);
    FUNCTION set_filter(filter_val IN VARCHAR2) return number;
    END vars;
CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY vars AS
FUNCTION set_filter(filter_val IN VARCHAR2) return number DETERMINISTIC IS
          my_filter := filter_val;
          return 1;
    END set_filter;
END vars; And ask the developers to rewrite the report like that:
    SELECT ..... FROM
-- this is the generic part of the report
< long list of ANSI joins here>
RIGHT JOIN some_table ON (conditions  - as above
                                                    *AND my_varchar_column = vars.my_filter*)
<some more joins for good measure>
-- end of the generic part, up to here nothing can take user parameters
    WHERE
-- this is the specific part, from here on, the conditions can take user parameters
    some_column = @some_param
    *AND vars.set_filter('some text here') = 1*
....The question is, can I trust the optimizer to evaluate my where clause (thus executing set_filter) before trying to enter the joins?
I know that this works nicely with conditions like "1=0", in this case it doesn't even bother to read the tables involved. But can I assume it will do the same with a pl/sql function? Always?
In my tests it seems to work but obviously they are not exhaustive. So I guess what I'm asking is, can anyone imagine a scenario where the above would fail?
    Thanks,
    Iulian

Even though I tell the optimizer, "look, this function is ridiculously expensive, plus it won't filter any rows" it keeps evaluating it first.
So it looks like not only can I rely on Oracle to evaluate a literal expression first, much as I try I can't make it behave otherwise.
Still, this is only empirical, I wouldn't use it in a production environment. Probably...Iulian,
I think I understand what you are trying to do here. Something like using cost to drive the optimizer to process the SQL statement "procedurely"...
But I believe SQL, by definition, is a set-based language and this means one can not rely on the way an SQL statement is executed by the oracle engine.
I believe this is good in most of the situations. However, I understand that it is possible that one may want to use his/her knowledge of the data to write
SQL so that it is more efficient. CBO, being a software, has its limitations and may not always make the right decision, depending upon complexity of rewrite.

  • Help - Final Cut the right option for making self-playing presentations

    Hi There,
I'm been in a horrible place trying to export a presentation made in Keynote 2 into Quicktime. This presentation has audio embedded in the presentaion (not as an object on the slide) and also has quicktime movies on the slides. The movies have vector images building in and out that is supposed to follow along with the audio and video.
The long and the short of it is, it doesn't work for what I want it to do.
    Keynote can't:
    A) set any timings that are accurate in any way
(i need to have visualks sincing with an audio narration)
    B) can't export either at all at times or with any accuracy to QT.
I need to be able to make QTs so they can be:
    A) made into steaming files that would be available online
    B) input into a DVD so they can viewed on a television.
I know I attempted a cheat by trying to go about this through Keynote and it has failed. Now I have to figure out what will work, learn the app and rebuild the keynote files in the right program.
Is final cut what I want? is express enough? Is there a presentation sofware out there that works? I was also told motion may be necessary? I know there is a strong possiblilty I was using the wrong piece of software for what I want to accomplish. I am will be willing to make the investment if I know it will be succesfull.
I'm really at a loss and need advice to assist in making the right decisions to move foward. Help! and Thank You.

All these applications will take some time learning to use effectively. I'd suggest you spend the time learning them before you tackle a project in earnest.
The full version is a bit more complex to learn because there are many more settings and options, which aren't available in FCE, and which may make it more daunting. The applications themselves behave very similarly, and anything you learn in FCE will apply to FCP.
I'm an Apple certified Final Cut and Motion trainer. Is Motion overkill? Can't answer that for you. It is very easy to use and to get going and be productive. It also comes with excellent templates. If you get Studio you get LiveType as well, and all the applications integrate easily, LiveType to Motion to FCP and any combination of that. I like LT a lot, but Motion is fun to use too, very dynamic in what you can create in real-time on the fly. It does require horsepower though, lots of RAM and a fast graphics card. You might find it a bit bogged down on a PowerBook as the project gets more complex. Motion is really designed for short pieces, motion graphics elements, opening titles, interstitials, not for doing whole programs.

  • Makes me wonder if I picked the right phone company

I have been a dedicated Verizon Wireless customer for about 3 years now. Couple months ago I renewed my contract for another 2 years. I was really excited about getting a new device which would give me more options of doing things online and being able to enjoy the convenience of the 4G speed. Screen protection, double cover for the phone, hands-free - I got it all! Everything was great until a few days ago my phone simply shut down on me. Of course the first thing I decided to do was to call customer care. A representative was trying to help me fix the problem but nothing would work. So I went to a Verizon store and asked them to trouble shoot the device. It turned out that my almost brand new phone was not in a condition to ever work again. So I was told by a customer representative at the store that they were going to order a replacement device for me and I was supposed to get it over night. We are all very busy people and those of us who are lucky enough to have devices that help us bank online from our phones, check emails and set up tasks and meetings on everyday basis would understand the frustration of not being able to perform everyday tasks because the phone you relied on is broken. Since there`s no such thing as a loaner phone any more, I was sent on my way without being able to communicate. I travel a lot between two states - working in one, living in the other. The thought of being on the road and simply not being able to even make a phone call in case of an emergency is pretty terrifying (don`t you think?). I placed quite a few phone calls to customer service to see when my phone was going to be delivered to the house. Unfortunately the lady on the other end of the line told me she couldn`t locate my tracking number and probably it has not been processed yet. She asked me to call back first thing next morning. My simple question was: From what phone do you want me to call you back? Pretty reasonable question actually! It felt like we were just running in circles. That night I managed to find one of my old devices which happened to work, so in the morning I could activate it and be able to place phone calls and check my emails. As I made it back to the Verizon store the next morning and asked a gentleman who was helping me about the tracking number and delivery time, I was shocked to hear that my phone was not going to make it to place of my residency that day. Matter of fact he told me it was going to take 3-5 business days and the phone has not even been shipped yet! I was speechless. One person tells me overnight, another one tells me 3 to 5 business days.. I understand there`s certain policies and procedures but they could have at least stuck to the same story! I asked to change the delivery address so it would have been easier for me to get the package (like I said I run between two states all the time). The answer I received was No, we cannot do that. I asked them to just activate my old phone and headed out for an appointment. I was not thrilled with the way it all has been handled but I decided to let it go. Little did I know, that was not the end of that problem. I called the Verizon customer care once again with the same questions: what is my tracking number and when is the device going to be delivered. Still could not get an answer for any of those questions. The lady on the phone told me that I would get a call back when they finally get the information I`m acquiring. Well let`s put it this way, I would have still been waiting for that phone call, if I did not call them back two days later. Finally I got that "magic" box with my replaced Motorola Razor. Feeling relief and excitement I went back to the store to get my phone set up again. Sales clerk asked me if I had a Sims card for it. I told him that there`s one in my old phone. He explained to me that it was not going to be working. Can you imagine the expression on my face as he was telling me all that?! All I could think about was how they could not have ordered another Sims card if they knew the old one was not good any longer. The sales clerk offered to order one for me with an overnight shipment. I said: just like my phone being shipped over night and it took like 4 days??!! So he said that they had cards in the store that I could buy. And I did simply because I needed my phone back ASAP. I never knew that the warranty covers only the phone, but not its parts! It`s like buying a brand new vehicle off the lot with no gas in it!! Ridiculous was the word of that moment. So now I`m wondering if I made the right choice when I picked Verizon as my cell phone company. After all I can take my $100/month bill somewhere else. If that`s how clients are appreciated by the company, I don`t feel like I need to keep my service with Verizon or for that matter refer any of my friends, family members and customers to Verizon.

What happened to your old SIM card?  You should have been able to move that card to the new replacement device.

Or were you referring to the one in the old temporary replacement device? Would that even be compatible with the newer phones?
The one that wasn't working had a 4G LTE SIM card in it. It should have usable in the replacement Razr. It was only until I read the OP a third time this morning that there might be a third device involved. It would be nice if people would give more specifics on what devices are active at what time. Then the readers of this community can follow the progression of the events better.

  • Thinking of getting EyeTV Hybrid to convert VHS to digital - the right move?

    Hello,
I am soon going to be going back to Macintosh after a failed 17 year experiment with Windows and one of the things I will be wanting to do is transfer some home videos I own into a format that I can edit likely using I-movie.
I have reviewed several discussions on-line, and think I will be going with EyeTV Hybrid but I am wanting some fresh advice to make sure I am making the right decision.  The videos I will be wanting to transfer come in, what I believe, are two analog forms VHS-C (which I would play back using a VHS cartridge converter as the camera is dead) and Hi8MP which I would play back using a Samsung SCw62 Camcorder.
Essentially, I am looking for a good conversion but it does not have to be great.  I would like to be able to do some editing once they are converted, but these are home movies and I am treating them that way and not looking at producing a professional quality video.
So here are the options I have gathered online.  As I said, I think I am likely going to go for EyeTV Hybrid but would appreciate any feedback as to whether it’s the best option for me or whether I should be considering something else. Money is an issue and I really don't see myself going much above $200 on this.
From what I have read, EyeTV Hybrid seems like it might be my best option.  Its priced at around $150 which fits my budget and I understand the results are fairly good.  Any reason why I should be wary of this option?  Is it fairly straight forward to use? From what I understand, I all need to buy is this and it comes with the necessary software – am I correct?
I have read that video pass through in which the camera essentially converts analog to a digital signal. This does NOT appear to be an option for me unfortunately.  As I mentioned, I own a Samsung SCw62 Camcorder and I also own a Sony HDR-CX110.  Reading through the manuals I could see nothing that would suggest they could do this but I would be delighted to be informed that I am wrong.
There appeared to be a consensus on the threads I read that the Grass Valley ADVC300 analog DV converter would produce a high quality transfer.  However, the price that I have seen is about $400 and this is far more than I am willing to pay and I haven’t seen a used one on ebay.
The ADVC110 does fit my budget but I am wondering if it would be much better than the EyeTV Hybrid as the prices I have seen have been a little more than $200.
There appears to be a consensus that the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD will result in a fairly low quality video and is not recommended. Anyone disagree?
Are there any other options I should consider?
Finally, as I noted I want to make some nice home movies using my old analog tapes is there any reason why investing in Final Cut Express would help in the conversion process?
Thanks to everyone for your help.
    Cheers

I have a drawer full of analog-to-digital converters (including the EyeTV Hybrid).   After using the Grass Valley ADVC300 I find nothing else acceptable.   I appreciate your concerns about the cost you just have to decide how important these videos are.
Compared to today's standards DV Video's quality is not that great, so I don't want to lose ANYTHING in my conversion, I have no quality to "spare".
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.

  • Panasonic HDC-TC900 - was this the right choice?

I know that this is a discussion forum for FCP, but hopefully someonce can answer  my question.  I lobbied hard for this camera because 1) I liked the idea of the hard drive 2) I wanted to upgrade to HH 3) it had 3 mos technology versas Sony 1. I had talked to someone who had the 700 version and was very happy with it.  Unfortunately I did not ask about particulars.  Now I find that it only records in HD (1920x1080) and iFrame which is 960x540; there is no inbetween, no 1280x720.
I am not a professional but I do a fishing trip each year (for which I am the documentarian) and I record or things such as my grandchildren's baseball games.
So, did I make the right decision?
    Thanks,
    WilliamL

    I like 1280x720 a great deal.
The Panasonic HVX-200 records 720p24 that looks quite nice even on 42" or larger plasma TVs.
The key thing here is that the camera offers a crisp image. This has as much to do with the optics as the pixel depth.
If the output is headed to youtube and/or DVD, 720p offers a great alternative to 1080i.
