Hope Java 1.5 will run faster

Above all languages, java is outstanding in nature but I cant imagine puttin up a simple swing application and find my application topping the task manager memory chart. Although I know the runtime loads before my program loads and its the one filling bulk of that memory space but i really believe SUN should work on making java really memory portable too
Also, Java's idea is write once run anywhere but what do you guys think about write once, compile anywhere. Cant there be a scheme whereby you can easily compile your code to all platforms natives in a simple portable way. I know you guys in SUN may have being bombarded with this question several times as I always see "java to exe" questions and not that you never anticipated such opinions as this but ultimately I do believe that someday, we will need a laguage as beautiful as Java that runs native to the operating system. I dont know what C# is up to but I get a lot of fear in adopting anything microsoft
Thanks

Swing performance and memory use is suppose to be something they're focusing on in 1.4.2 and 1.5. Don't expect a huge change, but there will be improvements.

  • Which query will run faster

    Hi,
    I have following two tables:
    SQL> desc customers
    Name Null? Type
    ID NOT NULL NUMBER
    NAME VARCHAR2(20)
    SQL> desc orders
    Name Null? Type
    CUST_ID NUMBER
    ARTICLE_NR VARCHAR2(20)
    PRICE NUMBER(5,2)
I want to find each customer's order with the highest price along with its respective article number and the customer's name.
Please let me know, which of the following query will work fast and why:
    SELECT c.NAME, o.article_nr, o.price
    FROM customers c,
    (SELECT cust_id, article_nr, price,
ROW_NUMBER () OVER (PARTITION BY cust_id ORDER BY price DESC)
    r
    FROM orders) o
    WHERE o.r = 1 AND c.ID = o.cust_id
    SELECT NAME, article_nr, price
    FROM orders o, customers c
    WHERE c.ID = o.cust_id
AND (o.cust_id, price) IN (SELECT cust_id, MAX (price)
    FROM orders
    GROUP BY cust_id);
    Thanks.

Your second version is selecting twice from the same table (orders). The first version needs only one read over this table. So there is a good chance that the first version is faster than the second.
However there is always a possibility depending on indexes etc. that it is otherwise.

  • CS2 Filter Gallery "improved" preview is to slow, is there a classic mode that will run faster?

The new filter gallery takes forever to preview. I assume this is because the preview area is so much bigger. I personally find it much more advantageous to preview a small portion of the image until I get the settings right, then run the filter on the entire image.
Is there a way to run the filter functions in "classic mode", or reduce the size of the preview area so I don't have to wait forever each time I try a new setting?
    Thanks.

No. The Filter Gallery is another brilliant disaster brought to us by the

  • Make my computer run faster

I hope I can get some help here; Recently I purchased Fios in a hope that my computer would run faster after Fios instalation, but no difference at all, then I asked the technician at verizon, they forwarded me to another verizon department to register for a service which will help about the computer run better, and that is $14 a month.
Is there any other easy way or trick that makes your computer run faster, or what actually causes the computer to slow down? My friend told me that if you don't delete the long emails will slow it as well, is it true?
Any experienced input will be appreciated

There are a number of things that may help, but none of them are likely to help a great deal unless your computer is infected with one or more viruses/malware.
1). If  any of your HDD's partitions  FAT (as opposed to NTFS) format, defragmenting the disk may be helpful. In general NTFS partitions don't need to be defragmented.
2). Get rid of the temporary files. It is not uncommon for PC's to end up with literally gigabytes of temporary files. They are left over from software updates, installs, and Internet Explorer SNAFU's. (Do this BEFORE you Defragment the disk).
Most temporary files either live in directories called temp, have names that start with ~ and/or end with .tmp
3). Clean up the registry. While Windows will usually still run with a truly amazing number of registry errors, it usually runs better with a lot fewer of them. Software you see such as 'speed up my pc' advertised on Television are in fact registry 'cleaners'. The registry in windows is kind of the like telephone operator before the days of dial telephones.  There are a number of commercial products that do this, but in general you are going to have to buy one.
4). Unless you are running Vista or Windows 7, try Verizon's high speed internet optimizer to tweak some of the internet settings for better performance.
5). Uninstall any software that you aren't using.
6). Use a good anti-virus/anti-malware/spyware program, and scan your HDD's on a regular basis for viruses and other malware.
Cleaning up your emails is very low on my list of things that are likely to be helpful.

  • T40/iPhone Syncing: "Device can run faster if connected to USB 2.0 port."

Each time I sync my iPhone 3G with the T40 (2373-73U), a baloon message appears saying the device will run faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port. I thought it was so connected. I've reviewed the ThinkPad article entitled "Troubleshooting USB Devices" as well as the Microsoft article kb/310575, "Advanced Troubleshooting Tips for General USB Problems in Windows XP." I use Windows XP Professional with SP3.  I confirm that BIOS is enabled for USB 2.0.  I saw something that said IRQ 11 is being used for the USB ports. Pursuing the baloon message, I'm told to unplug the device from the current port and plug it into one connected to the enabled USB 2.0 hub, showing six such ports. But my T40 has only two places in which to plug the iPhone USB cable, and neither will eliminate the message that things will work faster if I use another port. Can any one offer a suggestion?

  • Daily OBIEE trivia - which is going to run faster

    Good morning,
I thought I might post this for fun.
    Which one will run faster?
    1) a) AGO (metric, fiscal_year, 1) Or b) AGO (metric, fiscal_month, 12) ?
    2) a) (AGO (metric A, fiscal_year, 1) + AGO (metric B, fiscal_year, 1)/(AGO (metric A, fiscal_year, 1) Or b) AGO (metric C, fiscal_year, 1) , WHERE c=(metric A+metric B)/metric A
    3) for a unique time key on a monthly level - a) MM-YYYY or b) YYYY-MM
    Good luck :-()

Yes - a Thunderbolt Dock. There's an 'old' version of the Belkin, I believe, that's selling for $200 or so from Amazon. Let me check - here - $160 (there's a new one that actually has Thunderbolt 2, not just compatible with Thunderbolt 2).

  • Performance Analysis: java classes run fast, but http response is delayed

    Hello,
I´m analysing a performance issue on our application and I have the following symptons:
    - A profile analysis with YourKit Java Profiler 7.5 told us that our java classes are running "fast" ( mostly less than 10s ).
    - The access_log of the Oracle HTTP Server (httpd.conf LogFormat %T parameter) show us that the time taken to process the entire request is 130s
    - The users told us that the application runs fast for a while, but after some minutes, the entire application runs slowly. After some minutes again, the entire application runs fast again.
    - There are no overload of CPU, MEM, IO, Networking. All have been checked and are ok.
    - At the same time the application A runs slowly, the application B on the same server ( but another instance ) runs normally.
    - There is no database botleneck. All the application queries have been profiled and optimized for best run.
    - A huge number of application threads exists on the java virtual machine. The peak was 187 threads ( mostly sleeping. Just one or two were running ). The threads average in the vm is 150.
    - Our application has few EJB ( 4 ), few ejb-calls. All the EJB calls are cached with EhCache. The cache timeout is 2hours. When time-out occurs, the cache is invalidated, cleared and reloaded.
    - We have only 10 users.
    My hypothesis are:
    1. Application server thread blocking. Some threads take until 13 minutes to finish, even when the java processing took only 23 seconds.
    2. Some problem with the size of the AJP packages between HTTPServer and Application server.
I´m really desperate for help. Any help will be widely appreciated.
Oracle Application Server 9.0.3.3 running on
    Sun Solaris 5.9
    Sun Java Development Kit 1.4.1_05-b01
Is there any way to configure the max number of threads in the application server? Where?
    Thanks in advance,
    Murilo

You can tweak the application server threads as described here:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/web.1013/b28950/threadpool.htm#BHBDGJBI
Oh just noticed you are on 9.0.3.3 -- that is a very, very, very* old release. I don't think we had a tunable thread-pool back then. The oldest doc I can find is for 10.1.2, which I think is where we first introduced the thread-pool manager:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B15904_01/web.1012/b14011/advanced.htm#i1014357
Is there any garbage collection occurring that could account for the slow-down in ART? I guess not if APP-B continues to run well over the same period.

  • Will an SSD make MOTION run faster?

As it says, will it run faster?
    I'm currently on a god awful 5400rpm HDD :/
Motion 5 is slightly slow when rendering my projects, it exports fast and all's good. However when i want to play around with my projects it's so juttery.
Espcially when i click PLAY, it won't PLAY, it'll stutter A LOT.
    Thoughts?

    Heya Matt,
Motion does most of its heavy lifiting with the graphics card. An SSD will technically make Motion run faster, but upgrading the gfx card will produce the best performance increase. Have you tried optimising your playback performance in the Render settings? Draft quality, quarter resolution, etc.
    Hope that helps!

  • ?Best OS X version for Power Mac Cube G4-I want to reformat and start again in the hope it will work faster.

Hi. I want to reformat and start again in the hope my G4 PowerMac Cube will work faster. So I'd like to know what the best version of Mac OS X is for the G4. Can anyone advise?  Many thanks.

Hi, the best for speed is the lowest OSX it'll run & still do what you need.
10.1.5 would run in 96MB of RAM, 10.2.x took twice as much, 10.3.x twice again, 10.4.x twice again, 10.5.x thrice again & better Video caards.
And those are minimums, twice that being fairly useful, 4 times that being pretty good.
I suspect 10.4.11 is going to be your "Sweet Spot", I wouldn't run 10.4 on PPC Macs with less than 1.5 GB of RAM, not on IntelMacs with less than 3-4GB of RAM.
OSX is very dependent on it's spped & usability by the speed & amount of free space on the HD.
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

    Java has updated again today,
i use a java plug in to run my virtual software to access my work from home,
today i have an error message saying that security will not allow access to my website
i use to log in to work from, this is a JREdetection error,
my system runs off java and citrix, i tried chrome, firefox and safari - same issue, if my system cannot detect java it wont run, it runs on plug ins.
How to i change my sec settings to allow access to this website, as i can only see that i can add apps not web addresses?

If you get an error that says can't backup, try moving the existing backup file to a safe location and thry again. again. You can find the location of the backup file here:

My problem is Firefox will run reasonably fast - for a while, I do have quite a few tabs open, They start out in background mode, but as soon as I access them (to view or download from them) even if I close them as I go, FF will start to slow down and it isnt long before FF drops to a crawl sometimes taking MINUTES to answer a click on the file menu (example) no fancy benchmarks needed.
Having to restart FF and hoping your tabs come back for a temp. speedboost is NOT acceptable.
I have to restart at least 3-5x a day - anyone else think this is stupid?
I have 6 gigs ram, XP 32 only uses about 3.5 of it, 2.33ghz core duo, plenty of drive space.

I understand that after using Firefox for a while there are some issues with speed. [[Firefox is slow - How to make it faster]]

  • Will installing more RAM help my iMac run faster?

My Mac is circa 2006 and it is performing very slow.  Let's say I see the beach ball way more that I should.
I have 2 GB's of RAM installed.  Of the 2 GB's of RAM, its looks like I have used 1.75 GB's.  I have 92 GB's of hard drive space available out of 320.    So, my question is, if I install say, 4 GB's of RAM, will my system run faster?
    Jay

An Early 2006 Core Duo only supports 2GB of Ram. If you have a Late 2006 Core 2 Duo 20 or 24" it will take 4GB, but only recognize and use 3GB.

  • I have a Macbook pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (2011). Will Lion, Mountain Lion or Marverick makes it run faster or slower?

I have a Macbook pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (2011). Will Lion, Mountain Lion or Marverick makes it run faster or slower?

Snow Leopard is still the most efficient OSX from Apple.  I have a late 2011 MBP running Lion with no performance issues.
I suggest the following;  Install 8 GB RAM if you do not have that already.  (The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial).  The newer OSX's are trifle more RAM hungry.
Partition your HDD and install one of the newer OSX's in the new partition and try it out.  This allows you to 'retreat' to Snow Leoprad if you find the newer OSX is not to your liking.
Also note that the newer OSX's do not support PPC applications.  That means that there is a possibility that some of your current applications will not work and may have to be updated or replaced.
    Ciao.
