I'm new to the Forum. I'm hoping I can get some answers here and that I won't take too much of anyone's time.
I know this might seem odd, but I don't get Bridge and what it does. Adobe's description is nothing more than marketing fluff. I read it and still don't understand. What is it and what does it do? HOw is it different from LightRoom? The reason I even found my way here is because I'm trying to learn about custom White Balance. I was reading the info below and don't quite understand the reference about RAW conversion vs shooting in RAW. Any thoughts? And lastly, can anyone recommend a CS/Photoshop book that is good for beginners. There is so much out there that it's really overwheming and I don't know where to start. Any thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated! Elle
If you are shooting RAW, It doesn't matter how you set the WB. If you are using the Nikon capture software, at least it can see your WB setting and apply it during conversion. If you are using anything else to do the RAW conversion (Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Aperture, etc.) it cannot read the encrypted data so it makes its own guess. You can then override it if necessary.
Shooting a grey card with custom WB to a jpeg might be helpful in verifying your WB setting on conversion

This is true. WB is more important when shooting JPEG, as it influences the processing of the final image, and is messier to correct later. Any raw converter can override the WB setting produced by the camera and do a new conversion without any loss in quality.

This isn't true. WB is not encrypted, so any raw converter can read it and provide it as a processing starting point. The author is referring to other settings like 'Picture Controls' or 'Picture Settings', which include Sharpness, Contrast, Hue and Saturation.

Indeed it can. But life is too short to carry around a grey card! I just try to find a neutral object in photos, or adjust subjectively by eye.
Regarding Bridge itself. Bridge is a multi-functional file organiser. As a photographer, I use it to organise my photos, preview, add keywords, read EXIF data, rate, label, reject/delete. I can filter selections based on camera settings, keywords, etc. I use it to launch Camera Raw on selected photos, and select groups of photos for batch processing.

when implementing a simple branch , can i check the equality of strings to generate a boolean?

Hello, I need to know something about what I assume is the newest revision of the Airport Extreme, the one with the external antenna jack, two wired Ethernet ports, modem port, and USB printer sharing.
Does this model support a MAC address filter list (aka access control list) as the Airport Express does? In other words can I make a whitelist of computers (and other network devices) allowed to access the Airport, thereby locking other traffic out? I not interested in the theoretical (in)securities of this setup, just if the Airport Extreme has the feature.

Yes. This list only applies to the wireless network.

So you already know that it is not an effective security procedure. MAC addresses can easily be discovered and cloned.

Quick Simple Question

I have an Image that I have successfully caputred from a paintComponent method, and I have rotated it the way I want to. I need to move it up a couple units. So how do I use the Transform3D to move a shape in my 3D world.
Basically, I have two such planes and I need to draw them with the same x, z axises but different y axisis so that one is "floating" above the other, but they are parallel. I can now draw them both, but I want to move one up a little bit and the other down a little bit.

I have what is hopefully a quick and easy question. I know almost nothing about this stuff so go easy on me . All I need to do is find out if my DHCP is enabled. I'm having problems with my Xbox 360 and one of the possible problems is this DHCP thing. However I have no idea how to find the settings for my router on my computer. If it helps I have a Wirless model BEFW11S4. Thanks in advance for any help.

You need to access your router to check if the DHCP is on. To access the router open your browser and type in http://192.168.1.1 into the address field and hit enter. That should open the routers log on screen and by default the user is left blank (some routers it is admin) and the password is abmin. If you changed your routers password as you should for security reasons then use that password. That will bring you to your routers user interface and on the main set up page should be your DHCP.

Simple Question - attribute alternative text within the same Word doc

ok. I am having a brain freeze and can't locate the answer in the OPA help. Simple question.
Is there a simple way to alias an attribute for use in Word?
For instance the following two conclusions create 2 attributes where I only want 1 attribute.
the annual percentage rate = 6
APR = the annual percentage rate
Is there a configuration option or something to alias APR as the annual percentage rate for use in Word? I want to use either in the same Word document. Something in my head tells me I saw that once before, but all of a sudden I have a brain freeze.
Sorry for such a simple question, but sometimes I get too deep in the weeds.

You may be thinking of the OPA legend style. In the Office 2007 OPM ribbon it's called Table Legend, but I believe it works with non-table rules in Word as well - it certainly used to.
It's an OPA rule style which can be used when you want to refer to a shorthand version of an attribute, e.g. "APR" instead of "the annual percentage rate". I believe it only applies to the rule immediately below where it has been set in the doc, and not the entire doc.
I did a quick search in the OPM Help and found references to the legend style, but I didn't find a description of the functionality (I didn't search too thoroughly though).
Here basically how it works...
Above the rule write the shorthand version, then the word "is", then the full attribute text, e.g.
APR is the annual percentage rateSide note: I always bold the "is" in the legend line. This is not required, but I like to do it because it makes it clearer at a glance which part is the shorthand and which part is the full attribute text.
Then apply the Table Legend style to the line, then put your Word table or regular rule below it, e.g.
[legend]APR is the annual percentage rate
the result = APR * 10 I use this functionality occasionally. Usually it's when I've got calculations in Word tables and I'm trying to make the left hand column more readable, e.g. using something "APR" in the formula so that it doesn't take up so much space.

Pro Tools convert to Logic Newbie some simple question for logic users

Hey guys, I am a recent convert from Pro Tools! and There were just some simple questions I thought some of you may be able to help me out with. I am using Logic 9.1.1
1) After I set up a multi timbral software instrument (in this case MOTU Symphonic Library) how do I set up midi channels to trigger the individual sounds in the instrument. (in pro tools I used to create a midi track then send an output of that track to that particular soft synth)
2) How do I set up a and forgive my Pro Tools vocab but basically I want to set up a reverb channel on an aux track have it receive on a bus so I can send other tracks to that particular bus.

1) I have a nord stage and would like record via midi. In pro tools i would usually need to create a midi track with the output set the the nord and an audo aux track to hear it What would I do in order to record midi from my nord stage?
To record, just select a non-audio track, hit record and play the keyboard. The notes will get recorded into a region.
If you want to play it back to the Nord Stage as well, then it makes sense to set the Nord up as a MIDI device in your templates, so you can just add the Nord to a track and not worry about what MIDI ports it's on etc. Open the environment, create a New -> Instrument, called it "Nord Stage", set the MIDI port and MIDI channels it's on, and sav your template.
Now, when you start a song, to sequence the Nord, you just assign the Nord instrument to a track (by for instance, right clicking on a track and choosing your Nord instrument from the list of environment obects that appears).
2) The multi instrument trick is quick and easy its great but How would I do that manually?
Lots of ways, look into your key commands, ther are all kinds of "Create track with same instrument", "Create track with next MIDI channel" and so on. There are too many ways to do this to quickly talk about here. In short, all tracks have an environment object assigned to them, whether it's an audio object, or a MIDI instrument object, and this determines where the data on the track goes.
3) How do you set up midi so that it doen'ts overwrite notes when recording over them?

A simple question about performance!

Hi! I have a simple question about performance. Suppouse that you have a servlet or a class with DB access, and you need to use a value several times in that page. What is best, to assign the value from say, a resultset or a request.getParameter() to a variable or to call the resultset or the request every time you need to retrieve that value? Which option uses less memory, which is faster, etc.?

If you need more values from a db, the best is to open some connections (connection pool) and use the for accessing the db.
To get the data only once, open the connection, get the data, store the data whereever you want: variable (class), hidden control (if you want to send from one page to another by request) and close the connection as quicky as possible.
The advantage of the first method is that the most time consuming activity (connections opening) is done only once.

Quick PHP question

Unfortunatly I don't know very much about .php and I was
hoping I could ask a very simple question.
Does your html page, that has a bit of referanced php, have
to be uploaded to your server to work? I'm working on a page and I
can't see the image the php is suppose to call up and I'm wondering
if its because it has to be uploaded to a host server before it
will display? I don't have a server at the moment to test it on and
would like to know if thats the problem or not.

PHP must be 'served' to work. That can be done by uploading
it to a PHP
capable server, or by previewing it locally if you have PHP
and a compatible
webserver installed in your local environment. Normally,
people would use
Apache, although I believe you can configure your local IIS
to serve PHP as
well. You can find explicit instructions for how to install
these locally
in many places on the web - but try Google with "WAMP" or
"XAMP".

and 9800001 is the code i would submit(list box) from a form

A simple question on random number generation?

This is a rather simple question and shows my newbieness quite blatantly!
I'm trying to generate a random number in a part of a test I have.
So, I have a little method which looks like this:
public int getRandomNumber(int number){
        Random random = new Random(number);
        return random.nextInt(number);
    }And in my code I do int random = getRandomNumber(blah)...where blah is always the same number.
My problem is it always returns the same number. What am I missing here. I was under the impression that nextint(int n) was supposed to generate the number randomly!! Obviously I'm doing something wrong or not using the correct thing. Someone please point out my stupidity and point me in the right direction? Ta

I think the idea is that Random will generate the same pseudo-random sequence over and over if you don't supply a seed value. (The better to debug with, my dear.) When you're ready to put an app into production, the seed value should be the current system time in milliseconds to guarantee a new sequence with each run.
Do indeed move Random outside the loop. Think of it like a number factory - instantiate it once and let it pump out the random values for you as needed.

A simple Question about % in CR Chart!

When i use SQL to storage data and wanna Crystal Report to display the data in chart using %
which data type should i use?
float or string?
and I found when i use 0.12 as 12% in database , It could not display in Crystal Report line chart normally.
What should I do??

If you have the datatype as string from your database then try adding the string field as a summary field in chart and select maximum instead of count and if you have them in number format then you can directly select the percentage in chart.
