Horizontal bands on transitions

I created a still photo montage and am getting horizontal banding in many of the shots and transitions, particularly on the edge of the photos.
I didn't really notice it while I was editing. But it was quite obvious after exporting to iDVD. Afterwards, I went back into FCE and zoomed into the Canvas and the banding is indeed noticeable.
For example, there is a still photo on Track 2 (scaled to 50%) overlapping another still on Track 1. As the hidden still slides out from behind the Track 2 image, it has the horizontal banding on its edges.
Also, all the transition where the edge of the photo is visible, especially on 3D style ones (like Cube Spin) have the banding.
All stills were scanned into Photoshop and saved as 720 X 540 TIFF images.
It happens with the native FCE transitions, as well as plugins from Nattress.
I would appreciate any advice as to how to solve this problem.

When you add a picture to your timeline, FCP stretch it automatically to compensate the pixel aspect ratio (squares in the picture) difference with your footage (rectangular for video).
Let's try with a couple of pictures cropped to 720x480 in Photoshop, NOT resized, just cropped to that size, and look if your bands are still there or not!

  • Horizontal bands and aspect ratio problems

Sorry to ask yet another question, but I'm stuck again....
    Two major problems here:
    1. Thick horizontal bands of distortion across the video when burned on a DVD and played back on both the computer and TV. It's like the video is chopped up into strips and each is offset a bit from the next. This is most noticeable when there's movement, especially when the camera is panning.
I've found a few posts on this around the board, but all of them were solved by exporting to quicktime instead of quicktime conversion, which I already did...any more ideas?? It plays fine in Quicktime by the way.
    2. Aspect ratio issues. The video is 16:9 (it exported from FCE squished, which I solved following these instructions: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1431891&tstart=150 (using the dimensions specified by the second poster)), but it plays on both the apple cinema display and the widescreen TV with letterboxing. On the computer monitor it looks right, but there are thin black bands at the top and bottom (thinner than normal letterboxing), but on the TV it looks squished horizontally, with full letterbox bands. Any idea what's going on??
I'm using FCE HD (version 3.5.1) on a Mac Pro running OS 10.4.11. Any advice would be HUGELY appreciated!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Claire

    1. Regular standard-def video, shot on miniDV tapes in two different cameras and imported through capture in FCE. One camera shot in 4:3 and I zoomed in to make it 16:9 in FCE, but the problems are identical in the footage from both cameras so I don't think that's a factor. The file is now an .mov file exported to quicktime from FCE. DVD was burned in iDVD (version 6.0.4) using one of the widescreen menus, with the video added by drag and drop.
    2. Same video as above, same DVD, played through a DVD player connected to the TV.
    Thanks!

  • Black horizontal bands across top & bottom of photos using a full frame camera

I'm using a full frame camera with a 17-35mm lens.  When I import my photos to iPhoto they appear with a black horizontal band across the top and bottom of the photos.  Is this normal?

    What camera are you using?
Where are you seeing these black bands? in the iPhoto library event view or somewhere else?

  • Touchscreen tx2 1025dx has horizontal bands

and you cannot see the screen under them. It only happens after the laptop has gone to sleep or hibernates and is activated again, or when first powered up. It was occasional, but now I cannot even get the thing to boot. It gets to the login screen but I can't see the user or password fields to get past that. The bottom 2/3 of the screen are basically blank. It's out of warranty of course.
Do I have a small doorstop now?

I too have been having this problem recently with my HP Touchsmart 1025dx.  From doing a search online I've found MANY people have been having this same problem.  Has anyone pin pointed what the problem is? Many times I can get the screen to work by shutting down the tablet and rebooting until it boots without the problem, another temporary solution, which isn't working quite as well as it used, to is to put the laptop into sleep mode and then wake it back up.  The strange thing I've noticed is the people that are having this problem have just started having the problems in the last couple of months, and everyone's out of warranty at this point.  The price I've seen others have been quoted at, including myself, is roughly $400 to have it repaired.  The tablet was a little under $800 when I bought it from BestBuy.  Is HP planning on doing a recall or posting any information as to why this has started happening to this model?
Another thing HP needs to keep in mind about the problem is that the display has the horizontal bands and blurred display below them even while in the BIOS so I wouldn't think it's a driver issue.  Perhaps a BIOS problem, but that also seems unlikely as I haven't updated the BIOS since I installed Windows 7 several months ago and this just started happening a little over a month ago.

  • Horizontal bands during motion

I recently began working with HD. My clips were filmed in HD and imported into FCE-HD as HD. I exported these clips as a quick time format for iDVD. When playing the movie in iDVD there are thin horizontal bands that show up when the camera or subject is moving. Is there a better way to deal with converting HD to SD? I dont have a HD burner yet!

I have the same issue...does anyone have an explanation for this? I edited and exported from fce. When I burn in iDVD, the movie has horizontal bars that blur and look like the motion is dragging in stripes. AAAAAAhhhhhh! What am I doing wrong?

  • N560GTX-Ti Horizontal banding

    Hello,
I recently constructed a new gaming computer and chose to install a N560GTX 560-Ti. I have noticed distinct horizontal banding that is especially prevalent in dark environments (such as the fog of war areas in a Starcraft II match) and that varies in intensity. The banding is not black and white but almost appears as ripples on the monitor. The banding appears in many games (i.e. Starcraft II, Mafia II, Lord of the Rings Online, Call of Duty, etc.) and I have tried many things to stop the banding such as vertical syncing and switching out the monitors. Does anyone know how I can stop this banding? Below is a list of my components. Thanks for the help.

  • Repeated horizontal bands

My monochrome hp LaserJet 1012 has developed a nasty output problem. Horizontal dark bands appear fully across the page. These are afterimages and appear every three inches down the paper. I have a link to a photo of a typical page:

  • Horizontal band drifts top to bottom

I have a approximately 1 inch high, light band that extends horizontally the entire width of my screen.  The bad slowly drops from the top of the screen to the bottom in about 15 seconds.  Then another one appears and does the same thing indefinately.  This is not visible when standard DVD is played – only when signal is coming from Verizon.  I have already replaced set top box with no success.

Well PJL, you did ask. LOL
I believe PJL is asking what cables you are using to connect your STB and DVD player to your TV (composite, S-Video, component, HDMI).
While he may have many more ideas than I do, I would also check your Video Settings to see if one of them can clear things up for you.
Menu > Settings > Video Settings
You'll want to make sure that these match the capabilities of your television settings.
It could very well be a filtering or shielding issue.

  • Horizontal bands when editing previous VOB material

A friend at an effects company had all her clips given to her on a DVD. Since Steamclip only sees the first clip I used Handbrake to convert to MPEG. However any fast horizontal movement results in bars across the frame.
There are probably a total of 20 bars in the 480 high frame. This must be due to compression and not fields. The original DVD used 3:2 pulldown to convert 24 fps to 30.
Is there any method of eliminating these artifacts? I have Compressor and DVDSP3.0.2 and use QT Pro v 7.1.1.
Would a more professional service be able to deal with this issue?
    G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I think I found the solution: The trial version of DVDxDV software pulls a very clean DV movie of short clips in seconds. Tested the shots with the worst artifacts and they seemed absolutely clean. Except for that annoying 3:2 pulldown that was build into the original DVD.
DVDxDV comes in two versions: $25 and $80. The $80 version removes the pulldown too. Gotta test a trial version of that next. http://www.dvdxdv.com/download.html
The other cool thing about this software is you can set IN-OUT points on the VOB. This saves a ton of time if you only want a few shots out of hundreds.
So Handbrake just does not cut the mustard with certain shots. When I went frame by frame there was a regular 3/2 pattern suggesting that the pulldown was causing Handbrake to break-up. Still Handbrake is not a bad piece of shareware.

  • Horizontal band across bottom of screen 2 inches

    Hey guys,
I was trying to fix my bros old powerbook g4 so that i could use it. Everything works, except the bottom two inches of the display is not working. Its usually grayish, but if i shake the screen or hit it, it will change and look like what its supposed to. Even if i shake it, the gray just goes away, if i try moving my mouse down there it disappears, and if i open an application, the bottom part doesnt get updated, it just stays the way it was unless i hit it again. For a few days i got it to work at a certain angle, but now its back to its normal self. Is it a loose connection, or a software problem, or what?
    Please give me suggestions.
    Thanks

Video card / driver bugs can cause similar issues on screen - but they don't stay with the file, and will change as you move or zoom the document.

  • Horizontal Lines on Exported Video

I have a problem where the video I export displays strange horizontal lines on moving objects.  Let me expand.  My source video is shot on a Sony HDV device generating clips of 1440x1080i 1.333 ratio with 25fps.  The video is displayed fine within PE9 and any exported video as M2T at 1440 x1080 (H.264 preset) also displays fine.  However, I also wish to create Windows Media (WMV) exports but the exported video is subject to horizontal banding.  I have tried various settings including modifying the preset HD 720p 25 to including interlaced processing and manually setting aspect ratios but the same thing happens.  This also happens with the AVI preset.
As suggested by the help I also adjusted the clip settings before export to include "reverse field dominance" and "Interlace consecutive frames" but that made things worse.
I'm sure this will have something to do with interlacing settings somewhere.  Can anyone help?  An example of the video is below:

@ Steve - to answer your questions:
Yes, HDV tape, shot on a Sony HDR HR1CE on Sony HDV tape
Yes, project settings set exactly the same as the source format - PAL | HDV | HDV 1080i 25
    Yes, over firewire using PE9
Imported clips are trimmed as required, inserted into project, a title added (from the templates), some video and audio transitions applied between clips and that's it really.  Haven't used any advanced settings.
As I say looks fine (i.e no interlacing) in the preview and when exported as M2T H.264.  Interlacing occurs with other share presets.  I don't believe what I'm attempting should require me to use any 3rd party exporters or software as PE9 should have no problem.

  • Seeing odd bands when a photo is fading out...

I have a timeline with a sequence of photos in it.  The photos appear instantly, and then fade out to black over about 1/3 second (using the compositing opacity).
The problem I'm having is that I just exported the master file and watched it, and when the photos fade out, I see horizontal banding that shouldn't be there.  I'm inserting some screen captures of the playback of the video that shows what I see as the photo fades to black.  The screen captures just show a portion of the screen, but the problem occurs across the screen.  It is very noticeable as the video plays, and it occurs as each photo fades away.
What is causing this?  If I go to the timeline and advance frame by frame as the photo fades away, I don't see any of this banding in the viewer.  There the photos all fade away evenly as they should with no banding.
    Thank you for any information/advice.

Those screen captures that show the banding are from the exported master, which I exported in ProRes 422, and played back in Quicktime Player.
If I watch the video play back in the viewer inside FCPX, I do not see the banding at all.  Given that, changing the playback preference from Better Performance to High Quality isn't necessary or advisable, is it?
The still images are different sizes (because I cropped them, I guess).  They are all around 550 x 825 or so.  They look good in the video (I don't see pixelization like I'd expect to if they were too small).
I'm not sure I understand what you're suggesting when you say "set it up with transiton in progressive and see if it works better."   Are you saying to change the timeline to progressive?  Is that possible at this point?  As far as the transitions go, I could try a transition with each, but the instant each photo pops into view is aligned with the sound of a camera shutter, so I don't want to screw that up.
As far as the camera goes, I think the advice I found early on for my HF10s was to shoot in 1080 60i (I guess because the HF10s don't have 1080 60p) and I didn't even know that it's possible to work in a progressive project.  I really don't have any idea why that might be better, but I'd like to know.  If it is better, I definitely want to do it the best way.
