Horizontal column flow in InDesign

Dear all, hapy to discover this forum. I was searching hours on it in order to find a solution, but didn't find anything But I can't imagine that others doesn't deal with a simular problem.
I am working on a kind of encyclopedia. And the system is as follows:
For each name I have 2 columns. And each name is placed below each other (see my image for this, it's a jpg of a spread), separated by a line. But my text area has the stay on each page the same. I was wondering if there is a system to automatically flow from one page to another... So, if there is a text correction and i have to delete some rows, that i can easily repair this?
I tried to paste several horizontal columns in another text area. When I place my cursor before the columns and enter some returns, they move on my fixed baseline grid, but the problem starts when my last column of page 2 have to go to page 3 (i couldn't link the columns inside my text area to each other). Or the entire name is placed to page 3 or nothing. But I can't divide it in two parts (one on p.2 and another on p.3). I hope that I am clear and that someone can help me with this problems. I think my jpg can explain a lot (I don't necessary need a solution for the lines as dividers, these ones I can enter afterwards, which should also take me a lot of time of course).

thanks, i found the trial version... i first installed apid and so on and it is installed correctly...
but i really don't know how to use it...
i have different paragraph styles (one for name; one for date; one for text information), but i just need this 2 column flow for all these paragraph styles.
so, i imported my text in a text area and in my first paragraph style name starts with 2...
but of course all the text is still in 1 column after importing.
do i have to select anything in the column flow settings?
when i select this text area, i can select "flow current page" and so on ... in the plugin men, but this only gives errors...
would be great if anyone can say me what i have to do step by step in my situation.
i guess i am just stupid

Hello!
If someone has experience with Column Flow plugin for InDesign, please help me get started.
I have made 2 paragraph styles, with names starting with numbers 1 and 2 to indicate number of columns. Unfortunately, plugin just splits text into separate text frames but paragraphs with style named "2xxx" remain in just 1 column.

With the version available for download, you need to set the number
of columns in the object style.
Column Flow has been drastically improved ( i.e. there can be any
number of different column settings, the number does not need to be
set in the style name, you can use up to four different object styles,
etc.), but the new version is not yet available on the web site. (The
documentation needs to be updated, etc.)

Symbols do not flow into InDesign from standard text file

Within our application, we have the option to type in symbols within a text editor. Symbols include the copyright, registered, and trademark symbols. We then take the text that is typed in and merge the text to a standard text file, then place that file within InDesign CS3. At one think those symbol flowed in perfectly, but recently those symbols do not flow into InDesign on their own. What could be causing this problem.
Any body have any thoughts?

You can get these three (serif) characters in Symbol with
<0xF6D9><0xF6DA><0xF6DB>. Your three characters come in pink (which
means they don't exist in the font). It could be that they used to work
because you had a different Symbol font loaded. I always seem to have at
least three Symbol fonts (T1, TT, OT) going, even though I try to only
have one.
But why bother with the font change? These characters are ANSI: © ALT
0169, ® ALT 0174, ALT 0153. You should be able to see them in your
text editor and in just about every decent text font.

How can I create a document with two columns in which the text in the left hand column flows to the left column on page 2,3 etc, and doesn't interfere with the text I want to place in the right? Pages 5.

I'm using pages 5 and want to comment in a right hand column, on a (latin) text which I wish to place in a left hand column.
Ideally I'd like to be able to copy and paste the latin text and see it flow over into the left hand column on multiple pages.
At the moment it is impossible for me to keep the text only in the left hand column Any help!?

Columns do what columns do, flow from the bottom of the left hand column to the top of the right hand next column. So won't do what you want.
Your tag says you are using OS X 10.5.8 but you say you are using Pages 5 so one or the other is not correct.
If you migrated up to Pages 5 what did you do with your previous Pages '08 or '09?
Because Pages 5 is missing over 100 features, one of which is Textbox linking, that would allow to flow down through a series of Textboxes set up like columns.
What you can do is run the Latin text down a narrow document to the left and add individual Textboxes to the right and put your English translations in those. The Latin will flow but the English will not.

Exporting simple tables in pdf to Excel or word and maintain correct text/column flow.

Even with a black and white, clear scan at high settings, my exports to Word/Excel result are poor. Text is recognized but not in the correct sequence for editing. I find myself using the column select (Alt key) feature and exporting columns one at a time! When exporting to Excel, the contents of one cell in the pdf table ends up in 20 cells in Excel among many other misalignments. When exporting to word, it's a mess of tabs/graphics/paragraph returns...etc. I find myself selecting the text in 25 or so graphic text boxes!
Appears that many people have the same experience but I haven't seen a solution as advertised by Adobe. It appears so easy on video.
Can anyone recommend a step-by-step proven method (Win 7, Acrobat X, Office 2007, InDesign CS5.5)?

I am not sure about what video, but my guess is that was a PDF produced from Excel or WORD with PDFMaker. In such a case, it would have tags and all that would retain all of the information you need. When you are working with a scanned document, you have no such tag info that provides layout info (like cell locations and such). There are some 3rd party products that are said to do a better job in such cases, but often cost as much as Acrobat and only do the conversion. If you can point out the video, then maybe we can discuss aspects of what you are doing compared to the video.

2-Column Flowed Layout Problem

In the interest in saving paper and toner, I have begun using 2 column layouts.Here is something I'm working on:
MasterPage1 has 3 content areas (Header, LeftColumn,RightColumn) //restriced to 1 occurance
MasterPage2 has 2 content areas (LeftColumn,RightColumn) //occurances not restricted--used for content overflow from MasterPage1
MasterPage3 has 1 content area //occurances not restricted--NOT used for overflow from above--different content altogether
The Pagination is such that content flows through the LeftColumn,RightColumn content areas in the order shown above. It is slick! Overflow from the RightColumn of MasterPage1 goes to LeftColumn of MasterPage2. So far, so good. Just what I wanted... except
Here is the problem: When the form is first opened, there is no overflow--all the flowed 2-column content fits on MasterPage1. MasterPage2 exists however it doesn't have any content yet because there is no overflow yet from MasterPage1. It's rendered empty--I get an unused MasterPage2, between MasterPage1 & MasterPage3.
In a perfect world, I wouldn't have an empty MasterPage2 when the form opens. In a perfect world, MasterPage2 would only exist when there is content in the MasterPage2.LeftColumn content area.
I think there must be a scripting solution--like testing a content area for content. There are no events for a content area and the xml for a content area is an empty element with attributes for x, y, w, h, name and id.
So how do you test for content in a contentArea? Perhaps there is a different way?

Thanks for the demo. That is interesting--I think it might be possible to solve yours because you are flowing a single object and I think you could determine the total h value for it and control the occurrences of the MasterPage.
Something like setting MasterPage Max Occurance to 1 on the Object pallet
Then, track the combined h

How to place multiple column tables in InDesign Layout by importing from XML

I've an XML file that I need to import into InDesign Document. All the cell elements from Table tag turn out be a "single column Table"..! How do I place a 2x2 or 3x2 tables in InDesign document while importing from an XML?

It's one of the major differences between Quark and ID.
ID has a "paragraph composer" as will as a single line composer like Quark's, and it's on by default. When you use the paragraph composer the text is constantly analyzed and spacing adjusted for the best fit and appearance (according to the spacing algorithm and your justification settings) for the entire paragraph. If you force a line break, ID may adjust all the lines above as well as the lines that follow.
If this is a "serious problem" you shoud probably witch to the single line composer. You'll find a drop down for it in the paragraph style definitin dialog under the Justification settings, or you can change an individual paragraph as a local override from the Control panel flyout menu.
Most of us whove been ID users for some time find the paragraph composer to be one of the strenghts of ID, and feel it generates nicer looking text than a single line composer.

I want insert tags in my Indesign CS4 files. Is this posible when i select my powermath equaiton then run script. Script add tags automatically before/after my equation. Please ignore IDML word.
Yes i an comfortable with XSLT presently i working with Pearson ETMV2.
I have one more question when i past my snapshot its appear properly but when i agin see my commant then my snapshot disappear (see small blue rectangle).

Download the CS6 SDK. Under the "open" folder you will find the code for the LinksUI panel. This is the closest you will get to a multicolumn list box in C++, if you want to stay in C++.
The tree view widget support dynamic load of sub nodes in a tree. Also it will only request widgets to drawn when they are in view (as far as I remember).

Trouble with line spacing and text flow in Indesign 6

Hello everyone. I'm a graphic artist working with magazine layout new to Indesign. I've used Quark for years and recently came across this problem...
Within a paragraph we'll usually use a soft return to bump certain words to the next line. However, there are occassions I'm noticing that by doing this the lines ABOVE where I'm bumping the word change and reflow. I've never had an issue with this before and it causes a serious problem for us. Is this a setting I have on that I'm not aware? What can I do to avoid this happening?

Why are there horizontal lines flowing threw my video?

After I play back what I have captured, every few seconds a line will flow up through the screen. Does it have to do with how I captures it or how it was recorded? It was recorded on Hi-8 16 bit and captured with the DV-NTSC anamorphic setting. Thanks for your help! Jen

So I just played the other tape that was recorded in the same camera and there were no lines running thru it, just the other tape, so I guess it was recorded that way!
Now that I've got ya, I have another question(if you have time!) I captured both of these tapes with the easy set-up setting of DV-NTSC anamorphic(from HI-8 16 bit), the first tape was actually recorded in widescreen, but the second one wasn't but I forgot to switch the setting back before I captured it, so now it looks widescreen. Is there a way to re-capture it with the correct setting but not having to redo all of the logging(ins and outs) all over agian? I would really appreciate your help! Thanks, jen

Drawings in the Flow of InDesign

Is there a way to draw objects in a frame or table box that will allow the image to move if text is moved?
For example, on page 1 I have text that explains the widget. On page 2, I have a drawing of a widget. On Page 3, I have text that explains producing the widget.
If I am using an illustrator drawing, I place the artwork in a table and If I cut the page 2 and move it elsewhere, the artwork moves with it. Or if I place a new page before page 2, the artwork stays with the text. Can something similar be done with a drawing made with the InDesign Tools?

Importing a 900 page MS-Word document to InDesign CS 6

The Word document has course descriptions of all the classes offered at a community college. The need is to have two columns(textboxes of equal size)
in each page of the InDesign document and then bring the information from the Word document to InDesign so that when it is printed, it can be like information in a telephone directory as
Page 1
Column 1 data Column 2 data
Page 2
Column 1 data Column 2 data
and so on.
The Word document is like
Page 1

Page 2
Page 2 data
I understand using the Place option in File menu, the Word document can be imported, but how can the information be
brought over so that it flows in the two columns of each InDesign page. If I do an import now, the InDesign pages are like

Page 2
Page 2 data
I selected the Import options while using the Place option in File menu and chose
Use Indesign formatting in case of a conflict.
1. Is there a way to bring the information from the Word document so that it flows in the two columns of each InDesign page without loss of formatting? The MS-Word document has bold text, headings, sub-headings etc.

I found it in Story Editor View, took the text(Cut) and tried pasting it in the next line, but did not work. I pasted the text to Notepad so that formatting is removed, then tried pasting it in InDesign, but it still did not paste.
How can I find out what is causing it and how can it be fixed?
The Word document has all the information in a table(with no borders). I cannot get ID to import it. I tried "Remove styles and formatting from text and tables" option in Show Import Options, "Remove styles and formatting from text and tables" option with Preserve Local overrides checked so that tables can be converted to unformatted tables or unformatted tabbed text, but it did not work.
