Horizontal flickering, screen goes black -but apps still operational?

I've gone through 10+ pages of postings in the iBook G4 display forum, and I can't find any problems that are exactly like mine...
Yesterday, the screen suddenly started getting noisy horizontal lines and flickering. But the applications remained operational the whole time. I closed them out one by one, and eventually the screen went black. Even then, iTunes continued to play - but I had to reboot.
Now it's happened several times since then. The time from flicker to black is shortening. Generally rebooting is no problem, but a couple of times it took about 15 min. before it would restart.
It's also not continuous. Right now I've been on the computer for an hour without incident, but I feel like I'm pressing my luck.
Currently I'm traveling in Thailand, heading to India next. There is an authorized service provider here in Chiang Mai, but I'd like to have an idea of what I might be looking at before I go in. I have about five days before I leave the country.
I still have 1.5 years on my warranty, but being overseas and trying to get this repaired is going to suck...
I'm freelancing while here, and this problem threatens my ability to work.
Any ideas? Is this a display issue or something else?
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I am having this same issue as well. The mac boots
fine, then the screen flickers and sometimes goes
grey. some times it comes up, sometimes it goes to a
grey screen. Most of the time I get the flickering
lines across the screen.
Help would be awesome!!
This morning I took the laptop to the authorized support center here in Chiang Mai, and within just a couple of hours they had an answer - a problem with the logic board. Good news - the replacement is covered by the warranty!
So you should take yours in ASAP -

How do i fix my itouch. the screen is black but it still responds to touch

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

    Greetings jupiejupie,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPad is sporadically becoming unresponsive and the screen is turning black. In this situation, I would recommend reading over and working through the suggested steps in the attached article.

  • HT1551 I'm able to watch netflix's for about 15 minutes then the video goes black but I still have audio.

I just set up my Apple TV. I'm able to watch netflix's for about 15 minutes then the video goes black but I still have audio.

Is it always at the 15 minute mark?
To make sure it's not a connectivity issue
What is your connection via speedtest.net?
Check istumbler or netstumbler for interference
Make sure DNS is set correctly (settings - general - network - configure DNS - automatic)

  • Hp envy m6 screen goes black but computer is still running

My grandson has a HP Envy M6 laptop, every so often the screen on his laptop goes black but the computer is still running.  If he is watching a DVD on the TV via hdmi cable the movie still plays on the tv but the screen on the laptop is still black.  Sometimes it will come back up, other times he has to turn it off and restart.  Please, somebody give me an answer because my grandson is in college and if I can't get this fixed, he is expecting Grandma to buy him a new laptop.

Well, I went back and reread your links and realized that the second one was to update the bios.  Since I know that my grandson might not even know what the bios is much less how to update it or know that it needs to be updated. So I updated the bios and although I hesitate to say that fixed the problem since it has only been a couple of house, I haven't had the screen cut out on me since I did the update.

  • IPad Screen Goes Black, But Still SOUND?!?!

Hello all, As my Title, it says The IPad Screen Goes black. But when i try to scribble around I heard a noise of unlocking it. Even i tryed Home button and Power button for 10 Sec. HHHHHELPPPPP
    Please Answer Quickly As Possible!

Hi there Bradvance! What is your suburb? I will try to find the nearest possible Apple Store. And have you tryed resetting it by doing this?
    1. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together)
    2. For about 10 seconds
    3. Until you see the Apple logo (very important)
You are required to connect to your computer. Thanks!

  • When I turn on my iPhone 4S the apple logo pops up for a split second then the screen goes black but the phone itselfs boots up just fine???

I tried replacing the screen with no luck. The same thing happened with the new screen. I replaced the backlight coil and the backlight ic and still have the issue. I don't know what else could be the problem. If the battery is completely dead and I plug it in the "charging battery" symbol shows just fine during the entire time it is charging, but as soon as it starts to boot up the apple logo shows for a split second then the screen goes black. The rest of the phone still boots up just fine. I can use SIRI, press the lock button like I'm about to use my phone and slide my thumb across where the "slide to unlock" would normally be and it will make the unlock noise just no picture display. I am pretty tech savvy when it comes to repairs and all of the connections look fine, replaced backlight coil and ic, replaced LCD/digitizer, tried a restore, tried a DFU restore, multiple hard resets, but I am at a loss as to where to go from here. I had dropped the phone and put a minor crack in the screen but the phone worked just fine for a couple months after before this started to happen. The phone is still under apple warranty but apple won't cover it because Apple is stating that it is "caused by the crack in the screen." But being a repair technician I know that is not the case... Good one apple. So I took it upon myself to try to determine the REAL problem. Anyone with a little more knowledge have any ideas? Any suggestions are appreciated!!

Yes, I understand that. But The screen issue is not a result of user damage. The phone was not dropped when the screen got cracked. My daughter was standing in a chair at the table and dropped one of her toys onto the bottom of the phone and cracked it right by the home button. (Nowhere near the LCD/digitizer flex cables, connections, or logic board components) then a few months later my phone had died, I plugged it in, it showed it was charging, then Apple logo disappeared and screen didn't work. AFTER contacting Apple about the issue and them telling me that it "is a result of the very minimal crack to the sheet of glass that has no relation to the LCD or Digitizer and that the warranty does not cover it I had taken it upon myself to change the LCD/digitizer to no avail, as well as backlight ic and backlight coil to no avail. But how do I go about letting Apple know that it is in fact NOT due to the cracked screen nor is it due to the flex cable connections? I can't. So the lady that works the call center phones  trying to "convince" me that she knows what she is talking about and "convince" me that it is from the cracked screen I have to take her word because I can't show Apple that its not because of that without paying them $199 to fix the screen in which case they will just send me a new phone rather than fix the faulty hardware under warranty.

  • My ipod touch is flashing white on and off, I hold the buttons down, and the screen goes black- but the apple logo does not come on. What do I do?

So I have had this problem before, and know that you hold down the top Power button and the Home button, at the same time, for roughly 10 seconds, or until the apple logo comes on.
The problem is, when I press the buttons and the screen goes black, like it's supposed to before the logo pops up, the apple logo isn't appearing.
I was wondering if that's because my I pod touch was drained when I plugged it in to charge, and I tried to turn it on when it was still charging?
    What can I do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT4061 my screen went black but it still makes sounds?

my phone out of no where the screen went black yet I still hear text notifications

    Hi there SofiVelez,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.

My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • MacBook pro screen is black but computer still on...

I was using my computer one minute, then closed it and stuck it in my bookbag and then headed down a flight of stairs. When I got down there I eventually tried to open up my laptop, and the screen was black but I could hear the computer. When I got home I held down the power button to turn it off, then powered it back on. Same issue. I hear the clicking sound i always hear when I turn the computer on, but no Mac starting chime, although I don't think I've heard that in years. The power button light that goes around the power button is not on, but again I don't think that's ever on. My charger is plugged in (it's orange).
I have tried taking the battery out with the computer off and popping it back in. I tried with the computer on and popping it back in. Same issue. The other thing I noticed is it doesn't seem to be going into sleep mode when I close the screen (that front white light using flashes off and on again when it sleeps I think?).
Im going to try to take it to an apple tech person, but I am studying abroad in new Zealand so there's much less infrastructure here. Can't find an official apple store. But i did want to try some things tonight possibly to maybe fix it.
I'm thinking this might be an nvidia graphics card issue.

Just tried to reset pvram and Pmu and in the steps it says the computer should restart. It doesn't seem to be restarting for me.

  • HT1551 Screen goes black but sound continues when watching netflix on apple tv

Screen goes black intermittently when watching Netflix , sound remains. Broadband is strong , not sure what problem is

That will usually indicate a network issue. First try rebooting ATV and router.
Make sure DNS is set to automatic (settings - general - network). If on wifi try ethernet. Go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise.

  • Windows 8 in Boot Camp screen going black with computer still on.

    I'm running an iMac 3.0ghz Core2 Duo 27" with 4gb of ram.
As the title says, I have Windows 8 installed on Boot Camp and just in the past week this has started happening and I can't figure it out.
A little while after running Windows (usually a game), the screen will go black, but I can still hear what's happening and can even continue typing and interacting. The problem is that I can't see anything. The only thing I can do is turn off the computer. I've found advice on how to fix this if it happens in the Mac OS, but it hasn't happened on the Mac side and all of the steps to take don't affect what is happening on the Windows side.
I'm guessing it has something to do with the display or the graphics card, but can't figure out why it only happens in Windows. I have everything up to date as far as I can tell, so I'm really lost.
While I am running MacOS 10.8.2, I never have problems. There is a bit of image persistence that I have and have been leaving the screen on a little longer than normal. That may affect this problem.

With Windows 8 you're pretty much on your own right now as Apple doesn't support it yet in Boot Camp. You're just going to have to be patient or revert back to Windows 7 which is supported. Sorry to be the bearer of bad new but that's how it is, if you need additional info please post in the Boot Camp forum, that's where most of the Boot Camp and MS Windows gurus hang out.

  • Iphone 5 cracked screen but worked fine for 7 months that have owned it, blue lines started appearing, now screen is black, but can still hear notifications HELP!!!

My iphone 5 was given to me by my sister in january, had a cracked screen, but has worked perfectly in the time i have owned it, recently it begain to have blue lines appear on the screen, but was still working, now screen is black and cant see anything, i know its on as i can hear all notifactions (messages, calls, emails etc) help please, whats wrong! can i still claim apple support, as i dont have warrenty papers?

There are no warranty papers, never have been for iPhones.
Take the device to Apple, an Out of Warranty replacement is $229.
Warranty does not and has never covered damage.  The device has suffered damage (cracked screen).

  • Screen is black but phone still working

my iphone 4s has a black screen but is still working

Can the problem be fixed? Yeah. Put phone in trash, purchase replacement.
Can the phone be fixed? Only until it has been opened and components checked for water damage so the extent of the same is ascertained. However, since such damage is not covered by warranty, Apple will probably offer a replacement since they do not repair them. At cost.
    Good luck at the Store.
When the problem gets fixed, you may consider that a waterproof case is cheaper than what this incident cost you.

  • Help! Dropped phone, screen is black but phone still works...

I dropped my iPhone 4S today and the screen went black (thankfully it didn't shatter), but the phone still works perfectly fine. I can still touch it and everything; unfortunately I obviously can't see what I'm doing because it's black. Another problem is that my lock button has been broken/jammed for a while, so I can't try to reset it with holding the home button and lock button, which I've heard could work.
Is there something I can do myself? Or should I just bring it to an Apple store? Even then, can they fix it or is my phone done for good?
