Horizontal green lines display issue

When I have the brightness up more than 4 or 5 notches and a white screen is up, for example Safari, it leaves green horizontal lines exactly where the brightest part of the browser was. They go away after a while, but I'm always afraid I'm messing up my display so I leave it pretty dim.  I have the 27in imac from late 2013. Is it a faulty display or is this common?

Hi xlpacmanxl,
So the first thing that I would want to know is with the brightness cranked all the way up, do these lines appear during startup?
As for troubleshooting:
Install any and all OS X updates via the App store.
Perform a NVRAM reset:
About NVRAM and PRAM
If it is still going on reset the SMC:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If the issue still persists, we will need to know if it is occurring outside the OS. Boot to recovery by holding CMD + R during startup. There you can open a safari window by selecting Get Help Online. Crank up the brightness all the way and if you still see the lines there, head into an Apple Retail store for a diagnostic.
Thanks,
Ludeth

  • FCP/Compressor keep exporting horizontal green lines near the top and bottom mattes. What do I do?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to export a:
    1920x1080
    29.97
    Interlaced
    ProRes 422 HQ
    to:
DVD Best Quality (90 minutes) in Compressor
    Quality all the way high
    Mpeg-2
in Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor (both so far export with the green lines) and so far it has been to no avail. They show up right on the edge near the mattes. Most forums talk about a vertical green line but I am having problems with horizontal lines near the top and bottom.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

If you are sending your file via share to Compressor I would try this instead:
Export a QT reference(not self-contained or using QT conversion) file of your sequence to your desktop.
    Then:
Turn on frame controls in the MPG-2 setting and set all to best. Changing all settings to best will increase your render time greatly. You may want to do a :30 or 1min test.
In my experience Compressor can be inconsistent with HD to SD DVD MPG-2 conversion. Sometimes it works wonderfully and others times it does not.
I have had success with having FC do the SD conversion first.
Create a new 16x9 SD sequence
Add HD seq to SD and render
Export SD and then compress for DVD.

  • Imac freezes with horizontal green lines

My Imac crashed the other day with green lines horizontally across the screen, the mouse would react and move around, but could not open any apps. We took it to get repaired at Core Mac and he said it worked fine. We brought it home today and it crashed again. I think it may be the graphics card? Can anyone help?
    Thanks
Not sure what model as I cannot check right now.

I suspect a hardware problem.  I'd recommend taking it to your local Apple Store or AASP. You can try to run Apple Hardware Test though in Extended Mode.

  • MBP w/retina   Screen has a hazy horizontal green line

My MBP w/Retina display 15" has developed a strange green hazy looking horizontal line that is present at all times.  It is next to a white dot that is present at all times as will.  The white dot feels like a bump or divot on the screen. It is almost as small as the point of a needle.  Any ideas?  I purchased the MBP on April 8, 2013.  Thanks for any help, hints, or suggestions.

You are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare, call them.  Let them deal w/it before your warranty runs out.

  • Horizontal menu submenu display issue in IE9

I inserted a Spry horizontal menu into a page in Dreamweaver CS5 then edited it to display the way I need it to look. It looks great in FF, Safari, Chrome and Opera. In IE9 the drop down submenu items have too much (vertical) space between them. This is probably because I added a positioning element of "top: 20px" to make the menu center (vertically) correctly over the background image. I have tried any number of alternatives and this version of the CSS is just perfect except in IE.  I have searched for days for similar issues but haven't found anything to help.
    The page is http://myparlour.net/DashboardDDS /collections.html
    The site CSS is http://myparlour.net/DashboardDDS/dashboard_dds.css
The Spry menu CSS is http://myparlour.net/DashboardDDS/SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css
I would appreciate any help in resolving this problem.

  • Qosmio F30-117 - Display issues - red and green lines

    Hi there,
I have a qosmio F30-117 and up to recently, I was delighted with everything about it.
Then, mid session, the graphics began to deteriorate, which a reboot fixed.
Then a few days later, it did it again and this time when I rebooted it came up with a corrupted display, lots of aa's all over the place then lines of red and green all over.
Managed to get in by selecting safe mode with networking and got a desktop although still with the red and green lines all over it.
Now its gotten worse still, when I boot up the laptop screen itself is blank, its getting something because it isnt totally black like it is when its powered off, but its blank.
As a check I connected an external monitor and managed to get in again to safe mode with networking, but its still very bad, and still has the red and green lines all over.
I started to have a look around on the good old www and there are numerous posters and articles with problems, and lots mentioning the red and green lines etc...
so Im not alone, but no-one seems to know exactly what it is.
Some have mentioned Toshiba acknowledging this as a problem and doing repairs even if out of warranty.
So, any ideas, any advice, and does anyone know if Tosh have indeed accepted the problem and offering any help??
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
I think it's a common problem in the Qosmio F30 models. After long term use, the soldering balls under the GPU chipset start to melt down because of the over heat and the bad soldering quality that was used with the F30 model that cannot resist high temperature. Now you have to replace the motherboard, since the GPU is build within the motherboard.
However, there is another two solution for this problem and cost less money amount:
1- do what is called a "heat reflow" for the VGA chipset: to do this you have to take the motherboard out and heat the VGA chipset on the motherboard with a heat gun or you can bake it in the oven for a few minutes at low temp, this will make the soldering balls melt and go back to there right position. However, you need to keep in mind that this solution is temporary and will last maybe for month then you have to do it again and again till you ruin the GPU and then the only solution will be to buy another motherboard. So I don't recommend that you do that at all, but if you don't want to spend a lot of money on a new motherboard this will help you to recover your data, even though there is more easier solution to do the recovery.
Anyways, you can go to youtube and search the term "VGA heat reflow " to see how people do it.
2- send your motherboard to a repairing service that can do what is called reballing: what they do is that they will replace the soldering balls under the VGA chipset with new ones that can resist high temp. and this solution is permanent and even in the future you don't have to worry that the same problem will happen again since the new soldering balls can take high temp change. I do recommend this solution even more than buying a motherboard, since the motherboard that you will get will generate the same problem after few years.
you can find this type of repair service online if you googled the term "VGA reball repair" or you can find it on ebay
If you decided to replace the motherboard I think you will not be able to find a new one, and in case you found one it will be more expensive than a new laptop, but still you can find used motherboard for your qosmio on ebay or online. so you need to do a search and find out what fits your budget or maybe it's better to buy a new laptop.
Sorry about your qosmio, and hope that my post will help you!

  • 24" iMac displaying small green lines

I'm having a big problem with my iMac 24" when I'm using Aperture or iTunes music videos in full screen mode.
I am getting groups of little green lines about an inch long and a pixel or two deep, stacked in groups of five or six on top of each other like a small wavey flag. These little "flags" are spread all over the display and make for one annoying interuption of either the video I'm watching or the photos I'm editing in Aperture.
Sometimes when I'm scrolling through my shots quickly in Aperture the lines become much larger and then red and blue blocks of lines appear, they disappear again when I give the scrolling a rest for a minute or so.
I'm using 2Gb RAM, the 9600 graphics card and all my software is bang up to date.
    Any ideas any one?
    John
    Cheers
    iMac 24'   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB RAM, 256Mb,

Clean erase and reinstall to factory conditions did not help with the graphic corruption/glitches.
Here are the actions I've performed so far:
•Got iMac on Tuesday (three days ago) and proceeded to immediately install all updates, including the EFI 1.1 firmware update
•Installed Aperture, the problem started showing itself sporadically
•As I imported more and more Aperture projects the problem started getting more widespread, it started showing up in Dashboard (problem is equal on both internal and external monitors)
•World of Warcraft started showing the flags/squares/lines in the menus, as well as major geometrical corruption in the 3d views (planes intersecting the world, characters warping, etc.)
•Reset SMC (unplug all cables, wait 15 seconds, plug back in without holding power button)
    •Reset PRAM/NVRAM (several times)
•Ran without any software in background
•Ran Memtest (5-pass, single user mode for max available RAM) all tests passed
•Ran Apple Hardware Test three times, once the standard test, twice the extended, none show any errors
•Wipe drive, reinstall from restore discs, no updates installed whatsoever, no additional software installed, and it still exhibits the error inside of PhotoBooth, just as it did before, and just as it did for Janet in the post I link to above. PhotoBooth seems to show the most artifacting when the effects are turned on.
I'm taking it in tonight, we'll see what they say. I will keep this thread updated with my actions and any responses I receive.
One thing I feel I should mention is that I don't think it's Aperture's fault. It's just the main indicator for us since we all use it and it makes heavy use of the GPU.
Also, my problem started out small and got bigger over the 2/3 days I was using the machine, indicative of a developing hardware issue. If it was a software glitch, it would be less likely to behave that way.

  • IOS 7 iPad - Safari periodically displays horizontal gray line

Hi all, ever since upgrading to iOS 7, Safari on my iPad periodically displays a faint horizontal gray line when scrolling through some websites.  Has anyone else come across this?  The line only appears on some websites and goes away when scrolling stops.  I've seen this happen on an iPad 3rd generation, iPad Air, and iPad mini with Retina.  It appears to be the same graphic as the scroll bars in the OS, but there's no reason to scroll horizontally on these pages.
You can see the line about 2/3 of the way down the webpage here:

I'm on an ipad Air and have the same issue.
The problem I see is that this horizontal scroll bar displaying in the middle of a page is a bug.  This scroll bar should appear at the bottom of the screen where scroll bars live on all other browsers, not half way up the page.
The proof is in the Vertical scroll bar which is in the correct position, on the far right of the page.
BTW, both scroll bars appear only when necessary which is correct.
The issue we all share is the positioning of the horizontal bar.

  • My 27" iMac displays vertical green lines when turned on and then will not boot up

Can anyone tell me why my 27" iMac displays vertical green lines when it is turned on and then will not boot up?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The display or graphic card are damaged. The only thing you can do is to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get your computer repaired.
If you use an external display with your Mac, connect it to your computer and see if these lines appear on the external display. If so, it's a graphic card problem

  • Display issue: green, flashing pixels, low resolution on my new MBP 17"

I just bought my MacBook Pro 17" on December 2010 from Authorized Reseller in Dublin.
After couple of days for the first time and now every 2-3 days my MBP's display goes suddenly pixleated with green, shiny pixels and all display appears like low resolution. After closing the lid and opening it again the problem disappears. During that display problem my computer has no issue with performance like: video playing, opening and closing applications, rebooting, etc. Here are some screen shots made by my photo camera during this display issue: http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/809/dsc03872j.jpg http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/6670/dsc03879x.jpg http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/7914/dsc03885z.jpg http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3830/dsc03881g.jpg
I should mention that I also made a screen shot with Shiftcmd3 combination of keys during this display issue and it appears, as you can see http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/8618/screenshot20110123at204.png as it should be - sharp and clear. One of my friend said that maybe I should reinstall operating system, but my guess is that it isn't software (Snow Leopard) issue. By the way, I have all the latest updates.
Please, can you tell me what is the problem, what is causing it and what should I do?
    Thank you.

Ok, guys, I should update my main post about screen issues on my MacBook Pro 17" 2010 model, because it was quiet a big issue. It was actually problem not with display panel (which was completely replaced and which didn't resolved that screen issue at all) but with motherboard which has been replaced (by Mactivate).
After almost 3 months I can say that the computer had no issues since the repair: no screen issues, no noisy running vents.
I must say I am happy with repair made by Mactivate (actually one of few repair services authorized and recommended by Apple). They arranged the pick up with their own currier with no charge, great communication and most of all - they did everything to resolve this quiet unusual issue with my display.
I really and honestly can recommend Mactivate to anyone in Ireland.

  • G550 Laptop Horizontal Lines - Known Issue - On my 2nd After Returning First - Not Feeling Confident

I recently purchased a G550 model laptop -- This laptop has everything I would want in this price range and was pleased to have found it on sale and after a test drive left Fry's Electronics with a smile. When I was walking out, I saw a man bringing back in the same model for a return - I tried my best to ignore that and think positive.
The 2nd day I used it I began to see intermittent white horizontal flicker lines -- sometimes across the majority of screen, always from right to left and then in the very top portion of the screen. It then evolved into a line of white small dashes in the middle of the very top of the screen. Searching the internet, I found many many posts and videos with exactly the same problem or very similar on this same model and others from Lenovo.
I took the time to capture the line flickers with my video camera and decided to return it as it was only used briefly in the 5 days I had it in use. Since the lines were intermittent/random in their appearance times - I had a hard time verifying the defect - luckily the videos and the store manager helped me and offered me a new G550 and extended the return time as if I had bought it on return date (as he should). The man at the return desk actually said "You know you are buying one of our cheaper laptops in the whole store - so what do you expect?" - This was not what I or anybody should hear. If I am spending 300.00 on electronics - it should work as described. I bit my tongue and did not reply as it would not have been a polite response from me.
So now I am running the new G550 that they replaced it with -- funny as certain software is on this one like the Lenovo support software that was NOT on my original purchased laptop.
At the moment, I have app. 10 days left to get a full refund if this machine starts to do the "screen line flickers". However, I am feeling very UNCONFIDENT as I read more and more about this known issue.
Yes, I know the warranty covers this scenario for one year - but nobody wants to ship their laptop back to the manafacturer and wait for repair and or replacement parts.
Is there any known "fixes" for this that will not involve voiding my warranty? --- I understand it is a hardware issue and am watching for the flickers to appear always. Last thing I need -- being on a very low set monthly income - is to lose my 15 day return window and have the flickers appear on day 20.
Can anyone please offer any info/suggestions so that I am not "computing scared" the next 10 days before my return window at Fry's expires?
Shouldnt be feeling nervous after buying new laptops. Other than this issue, I love the feel/size/keyboard and eevrything else on this G550. I dont want it to go bad on me --- but I simply cannot afford to have it turn defective on me 2 weeks from now.
Thanks to all who have read this lengthy post. I would be most grateful to anyone who replies.
    Sincerely, FP

    hi FA,,
You're issues might be similar to this article - G550 - red, blue, yellow lines appeared on screen.
Sorry to hear about your trouble there at the store. AFAIK, flickering issues / vertical lines are commonly caused by either the LCD cable, lcd inverter, or the LCD itself. Not sure if it's a bad batch but kindly check the solutions that were provided on the article above to see what's the best course of action for the issue.
For the warranty coverage, flickering issues are usually covered if it's caused by a faulty lcd part (the lcd cable,  inverter, or the lcd itself), I've seen this happen on my laptop (which is a different brand) and the problem lies with the LCD cable. I recommend you contact lenovo for more info on how to go about having the computer serviced under warranty.
    Best regards,

I bought Lion from App Store recently and installed it successfully on my MBP. After few days when I left my machine running Lion from morning till evening I see a thin green line on the left side of the screen. I tried searching the web and tried few options like restarting the machine, resetting NVRAM and doing Apple hardware test (By pressing D while the machine boots). The Apple hardware test did not detect any problem. The green line still exists.
Please suggest me how to get rid of green line.

    Hi Brent,
I took it to apple service center. They did some checks and found out that the display has gone bad and they replced it with new one.
Did you try connecting other display (may be Apple Display or Dell monitor) using an adapter?  In my case the Apple service center people tried doing it and the display was appearing just fine without any green line. So the fault was in my MBP display.

I am occasionally getting patches of short vertical green lines on my 30" display

If I put system to sleep when it awakes it's ok
is this indicative of pending failure

    Hi
Not yet resolved it is erratic when it occurs but lasts for the session and is apparent in any graphics irrespective of application. I had a feeling it was a graphics card problem but may be wrong. I will have to try a stress test when I get chance.

  • Satellite L350D-216: Green lines, dots and shadows.

    Hello all.
About three days ago, I purchased a laptop (Toshiba L350D, released about July '09 I believe) second hand on a good deal.
I turn it on today, to discover a series of weird green lines, dots and shadows, most of which make areas of text hard to read.
You can see them to the right of words and if you look close enough, also surrounding various letters in the Google logo.
Not especially clear here (sorry), but the greyed out words in the address bar are very ghosted.
Also, it appears to have replaced solid areas of colours like grey, with a 'dotty' green colour.
It appears this issue has also spread onto video, where areas of green are now appearing at random points.
I have updated the display drivers with the latest ones available from here, which sadly made no difference.
Any advice on why this suddenly decided to happen and how to get rid of it would be appreciated, I use the laptop for Photoshop and as you can imagine, having areas of green and shadows is rather off-putting when i'm trying to work.
    Toshiba L350D
    AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core Ql-65 2.1GHz
    4 GB RAM
    250 GB HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 32 Bit
    ATI Radeon 3100

If an external display (a monitor plugged into the laptop) shows no sign of the fault you can presume the the graphics chip is not at fault, after all it's working fine on the external monitor! If this is the case you don't need a new motherboard. I have repaired many graphic chip faults on laptop motherboards, and find that toshiba are usually quite good at not getting this type of fault.
I would suggest that the problem is more likely to be related to the cable that connects your screen to the laptops board (this is if the lines are vertical). Try moving the screen about on it's hinge and see if the problem goes, you can also slightly twist the screen and see if the problem goes. If you are not confidant to do the job yourself take it to a confident repair shop and they will be able to diagnose the problem. If the lines are horizontal it may well point to a capacitor problem which once again is not a new motherboard, just a decent repair centre which can identify the fault and repair it by replacing new capacitors on your board.
    Hope this helps.
