Horizontal jagged lines in ProRes conversion from MPEG-2

I converted an MPEG-2 from a DVD into a ProRes 422 Quick time through MPEG Streamclip in order to edit excerpts in FCP 7.  When imported in FCP it shows horizontal broken layers when I stop playing it, and full image when it runs.  The specs of the MPEG-2 were 1920x1080, 25 fps, PAL.  The ProRes is compressed to 720x405, 25 fps, pixel Aspect Square, Alpha None/Ignore, Field: Upper, Audio 48kH-16bit.  In MPEG Streamclip: "Interlaced scaling" was selected. Is that correct or should I have selected "Deinterlace video"?  Is that the culprit for the horizontal disaligned layers when the video stops running?
If this is not the cause, does anybody know a solution please?  Many thank yous in advance.

this is correct, do not worry. on stop, you only see one field. on run, you see both fields.
if you work with deinterlaced material, even on stop there will be no jagged lines. advantage. but you then have reduced your motion resolution to half (because both fields are identical now). disadvantage. so, what you want really depends on what you need your master for. usually, TV uses interlaced material.

Have a problem where I'll occasionally shift my computer (i.e. physically move it, say from the coffee table to my lap on the couch) and it will freeze and the screen will turn into a bunch of horizontal multicolored lines (closer to 100 lines than 5). Usually restarting (by holding the power button to turn it off) works. A few times that has resulted in the three beeps (RAM issue? -- I've since replaced my RAM [it *seemed* to stop it for a while, but maybe not]), but the second time it always works. Attempting to SSH into the computer during this state does not work. Please advise as to what to do/what reports I can run and post. I will take a pic next time it happens.

Sounds like a problem with your GPU. Do you have an external display you could connect your machine to in order to test this? If the external display renders the same way, then your GPU is damaged. If the external renders fine, then the CPU display is damaged.

  • Strange Dark Shaded Jagged Line From Inside Glass(on LCD)

There is a strange jagged line showing up on the screen. It's not obtrusive, so I don't necessarily mind it, but the fact that from time to time I can notice it is bothering me. It's a lot harder to see when something really light or really dark colored is moved onto the spot it's at. It's not on the glass, it's under it, but the LCD doesn't show any normal sign of damage.

Pictures taken with my 1D Mark IV show a blue horizontal line at the bottom from ISO 400 onwards. So far nobody has been able tot tell me the cause of this problem. The body is still quite new (15000 pics taken).

I agree that it looks like a column of photosites is not working.  But... I'm curious as to why this would only happen at ISO 400 or above.
The sensor is covered with photosites -- they are monochrome.   On top of the photosites is the "bayer mask".  The mask is a checkboard pattern of red, green, and blue "lenses" which makes the photosite beneath only sensitive to that particular color.  They are group in clusters of 4 photosites in a 2x2 matrix.  Two of the four squares (in opposing corners) are green.  One corner is red.  One corner is blue.  If you were to lose a column which happens to be along the red/green column (as opposed to the green/blue) then you'd lose red sensitive and half the green sensitivity in that column.  The result would be that this column is flanked by two "working" columns which are full of green/blue photosites... hence the teal blue look.
I do not know if this will work for you, but oddly... you can actually sometimes "clear" stuck pixels (but usually this is an indvidiual stuck pixel... not a whole column of them) by putting the camera into manual sensor cleaning mode (and you may have to do this 2 or three times).  While the normal point of the self-cleaning mode is to flip up the reflex mirror and open the shutter so that you can inspect and clean the sensor (really the front-most filter because you can't actually touch the real sensor), it also neutralizes the charge on the sensor (or so I've read).  This charging and discharging of the sensor a few times can often get "stuck" pixels to start working again.  BUT AGAIN... I've only ever seen this used on individual stuck pixels... never a whole row.

    Hi Ben,
I can't reproduce that behavior.  The only two things I can think of at the moment are (1) you accidentally added a shortcut as a panel shortcut instead of a diagram shortcut or (2) the name of the object you specified isn't for the "Multiply" node, but for some other node (you said "Multiplication" in your initial post) that can only be dropped in certain places (i.e. maybe it's a node that is only valid in Simulation diagrams).  Can you post the following lines from your LabVIEW INI file so I can look into it further:

  • Interlaced? (jagged lines) issue when burning a disc

I uploaded some standard definition DVD-R footage into my 2011 iMac (550gb). To get the DVD-R's vob footage into FCPX for editing, I first transferred the vob's to QT MOV's via MPEG Streamclip. I then imported it into FCPX as is (SD 640x480), then edited and completed my project without any issues or problems in FCPX.
My plan was to burn the finished project back to an standard definition DVD-R. I wanted to try it via four ways. 1) Burn the disc straight from FCPX. 2) Burn the project as an IMG to my hard drive and make the disc later. 3) Export the finished project as an H.264 QT MOV (at 640x480) and then burn the disc via Compressor. 4) Burn the H.264 MOV via Toast.
Here's the big problem: When it was time to either burn the project straight from FCPX to a DVD-R, or take my QT MOV of the same project and burn a disc via Compressor or Toast, the finished DVD-R, when played on a DVD player or in my Mac showed MAJOR interlacing issues (those jagged wiggly lines on people's bodies, especially during camera movement).
So what's strange is, the QT MOV files and the VOB files that I exported to my hard drive from FCPX (before actually making the disc) look and sound perfect. But when I try to burn the actual disc via FCPX, or Compressor, or Toast, the interlacing issues (jagged lines) appear every time. So it's obvious to me that there's something that the disc burning process, itself, doesn't like, or is having issues with. (I tried changing it Progressive and nothing gets rid of those jagged lines.
Any advice or help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    J.

    Then it's probably not interlacing.
Post a screen shot of a frame before you imported into FCP and another sceen shot shot after exporting.
(Or is you'd prefer, upload a short section to Dropbox so we can see it and test it first hand.)
I used h.264 because there was no alternative.
I don't understand that; if you export as a master file, you should have a whole bunch of codec options.

  • Horizontal jagged edges after compression

I am new to Prores and compressor and have done a lot of reading on workflows. I think I have it set up correctly but am not getting the results I expected. I am shooting 1440x1080 60i HDV with an FX1. I have FCP setup to use a Prores 422 1440x1080 60i 48khz sequence capturing with Prores 422 1440x1080 60i 48khz from an HDV tape. It looks fine in FCP. I send the sequence to Compressor 3.5 and am using the standard Apple DVD Best quality 90 min setup (it's only about 60 min of footage). After it compresses I put it into DVDSP setup for 16:9 SD DVD. When I build and burn it with Toast Titanium the playback looks bad. It has horizontal jagged edges around peoples' shoulders, faces, background etc. When I look at the inspector for the clip in compressor it looks like deinterlacing is on, but I haven't checked the deinterlacing option.
Is there something I'm missing? From everything I've read this seems to be the way I should be capturing and compressing. Thanks!

Sorry. I am building with DVDSP. I'm using Toast to burn the final dvd. I tried burning a disc with DVDSP and I didn't get any video for some reason, only audio.
Unfortunately the only way for me to view the material until it is burned is on my main monitor.
So if I don't turn on the deinterlace option in DVDSP my final product should be interlaced, correct?

  • Conversions from PowerPoint to Keynote... again

Sorry if this is an FAQ, but there is no FAQ file available yet, and I can't find an answer by wading through thousands of posts.
I have a lot of PPT files which are provided by the textbook publisher for a course I am teaching, and I would like to use this material. However, I use Keynote exclusively for my own lectures, and want to convert the PPT files so I can customize them. I am running Keynote 2.0.2 and PowerPoint 11.2.4 on OS X 10.4.7.
When I open these files in Keynote, most of the bulleted text and some of the simple graphics come across OK, but unfortunately, a lot of the more complicated graphics don't. When the original slide has a lot of lines, rectangles, etc., the conversion seems to change all of the graphics into a single uneditable bitmap of some sort. I have experimented with cutting and pasting indivisual graphical objects from PowerPoint to Keynote, and even on simple things like a line segment at a 45 degree angle, the object gets converted to a picture, and worse yet, the line width is changed from the original 2 points to 6 points!
None of these files are complicated or "challenging". There are no transitions, animations, videos, audio, or any of the things that seem to plague a lot of users. I am just talking about text and simple line drawings (schematics, etc.) I suspect that there are tricks or procedures that I am not doing right, but don't know where to look for help other than this forum. Can anyone give me an assist?
    Thanks

Most of this stuff appears to be just simple line art primitives. What begins as a line in the ppt file ends up being a .pict file dropped in to the Keynote file. It isn't consistent either; a lot of objects come across OK (rectangles, horizontal and vertical lines, for instance). Angled lines and more complicated shapes seem to be converted to .pict drop-ins.
I am continuing to explore this; I'll post any significant discoveries.

  • Getting ÿþ as saved conversations from Lync in Outlook in Office 2013

    Hi,
I've been trying to get to the bottom of this and have found similar posts, but no one seems to have an answer.
When I IM someone using Lync 2013, they get a pop up notification but instead of the message they see ÿþ<.  Once they open the chat window, they can see my typed text.  Occasionally, certain people can't see the first line of my chat, but as
long as they keep the chat window open, they can see everything new I type.
All my conversations that are saved in outlook show ÿþ< for the text and are unreadable.  I've disabled the saving of conversations because they have become worthless.
I believe it has to do with BOM but have not been able to find a way to fix this.
If I copy a conversation from the chat window and paste it into Microsoft Word it shows ÿþ<, but if I paste it into notepad the conversation appears.
(I had inserted a screenshot here, but am unable to because I am unable to figure out how to get my account "verified")
I've tried changing the preferred encoding for outgoing messages: to Unicode (UTF-8) in Outlook, but this had no effect and I can't find a similar option in Lync 2013.
(I had inserted a screenshot here, but am unable to because I am unable to figure out how to get my account "verified")
I enabled logging for Lync and the event IDs that come up are 1, 11 and 12, to which I cannot find any information for at the moment.
Any help and or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Did the issue happen only for you or for multiple users?
Please try to delete Lync User Profile and information on Registry, then repair Office 2013.
The path of Lync User Profile: %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync
The path for information on Registry: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
    Then test the issue again.

  • 24" Imac Horizontal Video Lines Video tearing

My 24" Intel Imac 216 GZ Core 2 Duo 3g ram is suffering from video anomalies (thin horizontal noise lines, Tear lines and moving windows leaves trailing repeats of the window.) Lines occur as early as the desktop at startup. Using Itunes or mail aggrevates the problem. Safe Boot cures the problem, new partition does not. Apple Hardware Extended Test is negative. Repaired Disk & Permissions, reset Pram, Archive and install all with no results. Started as a minor issue mostly in mail but now happens with no programs running. Looking for ideas.

If you haven't tried yet, install SMCFanControl (and some other utility to show you the temperature readings for the different sensors inside your iMac) and push up your fan speeds with SMCFanControl to drive down the temperatures. See if you get no (or fewer) horizontal lines when your machine - particularly the graphics chip parts - is cooler, and more when it is hotter.
That isn't a remedy of course, and it seems from these various threads that the failure of your graphics chip is inevitable if you are having the symptom that it is heat related (ie that running the fans faster makes it stop happening, or happen less).

  • Slideshow exported to pdf: jagged lines

Although this issue has been brought up before in this forum, it has never been properly answered or resolved. Therefore, I will be pretty precise about the procedure in the hope that knowledgeable people will take a closer look at the issue.
For test purposes on this forum, I make a "slideshow" in LR 2.1 MacBook Pro using one single 10Mpx RAW image that has been pre-rendered 1:1 in Library. For this demonstration, the slideshow has no borders, no text, and 0 pixel margins in layout.
First, I play the slideshow i LR 2.1 so it shows full screen on my 1920x1200 SpectraView monitor, then, to make you see the result, I do a screen shot and then crop the relevant detail from the image, then 'Save for web' jpg to make it web friendly so you can easily see it.
The following image is the relevant detail of the full-screen LR image, namely a car (a very nice beautiful good-looking car, since it happens to be MY car:-)
Then, in LR 2.1, I export to pdf, choosing Screen as resolution, which in my case is 1920x1200, at 100% quality, 'automatically show full screen'. Then I open the pdf in Acrobat 8.1.2, which shows it in full screen on my 1920x1200 monitor. Since the monitor matches the chosen resolution, the result SHOULD be at least as good as the way LR "plays" the slideshow, but preferably with some suitable amount of output sharpening.
However, the car in the image now has very ugly jagged lines. To make you see the result, I do again a screen shot and then crop the relevant detail from the image, then 'Save for web' jpg to make it web friendly so you can easily see it. (This jpg sRGB procedure has not affected the visual result of the artifacts in any relevant way.)
The following image is the relevant detail of the pdf-exported full-screen image, namely the car:
It should be pretty obvious that the result is unacceptable. It is not primarily sharpening that causes the jagged behavior, it looks more like a very bad resampling. Many people seem to have reported the same thing, so I wonder how come this hasn't been addressed at all in the last few versions of LR? Or do you really have a workaround?
PS: increasing resolution further (to for instance 3000x2000 pixels) on export does NOT solve the problem; it only makes the artifact somewhat smaller.

As to why I export pdf slideshows: there are three reasons and usages for this:
    1. Making relatively small (eg. 900x1440) slideshows to be sent over email to people. For about a year I have noticed the quality is lousy, but I first thought it was because LR did a much too strong sharpening on export, but much later I came to realize that the problem has a much more severe origin. I took for granted that Adobe was trying to do something about it, but obviously not.
    2. I can merge several pdf slideshows into one slideshow, so that I can have an Intro Screen at the start of each new "event", where each "event" may be only a few slides.
    3. The native quality of slideshows as shown by LightRoom is lousy in deep shadows, just as bad as in the Library module, despite it has been rendered 1:1. It is ONLY in the Develop module that shadows are rendered decently, or on export to jpg, or export to a pdf slideshow (but the latter has other problems as I have shown above). So, to make the shadows better, and to avoid various problems with the Slideshow module (such as starting or stopping on the wrong image), I often export to pdf. In addition, color management can behave differently when displaying the show on a separate monitor or projector, where LR and Acrobat sometimes differ, especially on Plasma screens.
I have discussed the issue of bad shadow rendering before in this forum (long ago), and Jao thought it was due to a corrupt monitor profile, or at least an improper rendering intent, but I don't think so, and I showed screen shots so that everyone could see the effect. Some people only saw an almost black image, but that is because their monitor is bad. I have a very good monitor (SpectraView) that shows almost the entire Adobe RGB, and the profiling makes me able to see colors all the way down into the deepest shadows. Whenever color management is not working as it should, I see that immediately. It is in those shadows that the Library and Slideshow modules do a very bad job. Maybe the reason is that the previews are based on jpg, and jpg itself is extremely bad in shadows, usually causing severe posterizations.

  • Conversion from u0091Stringu0092 to type u0091Dateu0092

    Hi,
I am fetching a date from DeliveryDate TextBox from Sales Order. I enter as 10/03/2007. As I need to fetch this value and store it in Production Order DueDate records through SDK Code. When I fetch this value from code,I get as 20070310. When I try to update my Production Order DueDate it gives me an Error Msgbox “Conversion from string “20070310” to type ‘Date’ is not valid.” Here is my code to update production order.
    Dim DelDt As String
    DelDt = MyForm.Items.Item("12").Specific.value
    Here DelDt shows 20070310
Now I have created an object of ProductionOrder and try to add Records,
    sboProdOrder.DueDate = DelDt
On the above line it gives me that messagebox.
Can any one help me as to how can I convert this code in a working one or how to convert the string to date in VB.Net
    Thanks a lot
    Murtaza

    Hi Murtuza,
Retrieving the value from a date-field through the value always returns the date as a string in the format yyyymmdd.
the field DueDate is a field of type DateTime.Date. to enter the date in this field, you must convert the string to a date.
The following line converts the date-string to a date.
    new DateTime.Date(left(DelDt,4), mid(DelDt,5,2), right(DelDt,2))

  • Laserjet Pro 200 Color Printing Horizontal Red Lines

When I print in color, I get horizontal red lines across my page.  When I print in black and white, it doesn't happen.  I've cleaned & calaborated the printer & it's still doing this.  Can anyone help?

    Hi @kjatc,
I see that you are getting red horizontal lines when printing in color. I would really like to be able to help you resolve this issue today.
I would do a hard reset to see if will help.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
I have provided a document with the steps for calibrating and cleaning the toners, printing a Print Quality page, inspecting the toner for damage, checking the paper and driver settings to see if this will resolve the issue. Some of the steps you have already tried, but please try the other steps listed. Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues.
Print a Diagnostics Page: Go to Setup, Reports Menu, Diagnostics Page.
Update the printer's firmware. Software and Drivers. Select Go under Option 2.
Are you using Genuine HP Toner?
    What are the toner levels?
What were the results of the Print Quality Page and Diagnostics Page?
This will help determine if it is just one specific toner, possibly a fuser or hardware issue with the toner. Feel free to include a screen shot of both pages.
If you appreciate my efforts, please click the Thumbs up button below.
Please let me know the results. Thank You.
