Horribe image quality in PDF

Hello,
my problem is very simple.
The quality of the image of my PDF is really horrible.
I need to have a PDF file because in order to print a magazine, that's the file that I need.
So I converted my picture:

Good quality for now.
Then, when I convert it PDF with Adobe Acrobat XI,
the result is very blurry, I tried to print it, very very bad quality ...
Is there any solution to keep the quality as good as it was?
(by the way, my image was a .png )

The relative quality of any bitmap file after conversion to PDF depends entirely on the conversion settings you used. A lossless PNG file could be compressed to a super-low-quality JPEG or kept visually identical with lossless JPEG2000 compression depending on how and where the PDF is made.
As your screenshot shows the image within a page of text, I assume you're creating the PDF from another application - in which case the export settings will control everything. If you convert an isolated image file to PDF with drag-drop or the Create.. button on the Acrobat toolbar, the settings are defined by Preferences > Convert to PDF > PNG and default to "JPEG medium".

Poor image quality in pdf for Aperture book

Can anyone tell me how to retain the quality of original images when I export to PDF for book production in Aperture?
I am trying to produce a book with 11 pages, in large soft back format. Most of the images are black and white, and all are PNGs. Individual files size are typically 12MB - 20MB, and the longer side of the images is mostly over 5000 pixels. They all look very clean and crisp full screen in Aperture, and there are no warning triangles in the page make-ups to highlight any instances of poor resolution.
I’m producing the PDF, via ‘Print’ > ‘Save as PDF’. The resulting file is 2.6MB.
Viewed in Preview, some of the images in the PDF superficially appear to be OK. Some are not - and are very indistinct. Zooming in on the images in Preview shows that very few are useable.
I produced a colour book, with larger pages last year and was very happy with both the PDF and the finished book in print. Some example file sizes from that one were: 15.3MB (3950x2633) and 9.30MB (2880x 1920).
I had expected the black and white images to work even better.
What am I doing wrong here?
I'm using Aperture 3.2.1 on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.

I just remade the same book - as a test - in the extra large hardback format (ie. the one I used for the previous publication, last year).
This time, the pictures are fine. The images appear to be the same quality in the PDF as the originals - much, much better. The size of the file has increased massively too > up from just 2.6MB to 52.8MB.
So does the books production function work well only with the biggest, most expensive option?
I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone who's tried the different sizes, and preferably some brilliant ideas to make them all work equally well.

Image quality in PDF files

Hi. I add images to pdf files all the time and I have a question about them. The image quality seems to be bad in certain situations. For example I added a 501x483 72dpi gif image to a 1190x1684 pdf file. It looks great at 75% zoom but really jagged at 100% zoom. Why is it like this? Shouldn't it be same as the original image file at 100% zoom?
I'd really appreciate any guidance about making images look better in pdf files.

Thanks for the responses. I tried Print to PDF. In that images look better although they are little distorted. However, I cannot use print because the Table of Contents prepared in Word does not work when we use Print. Secondly, the PDF file size becomes too large when using Print to PDF.
While directly creating PDF from word using Acrobat, I changed settings for Images (in Preferences) turning downsampling off after changing it to 1800 pixels but that did not help either. Is there anything I am missing out or Is there any other resolution?
Else is there any setting in PDF so that after conversion we can show the images more clearly, maybe if someone hovers over the image it becomes big or clicking on it makes it look bigger.
Looking forward to make this problem resolve.

Poor Image quality upon PDF export

issue: images lose quality when viewed in PDFs
i've searched/read these and other forums for the past few days and have tried just about every suggestion out there in order to get better quality images in my PDFs and nothing works.. it's as if everyone is talking some theory without actually testing/proving what they're saying.
are pdfs inherently bad at handling raster images?
i have a few 800x1200 px renders (tiffs/jpgs) that i'd like to include in a PDF.. i'm using A4 landscape orientation because when viewed at full size on a 24" monitor, it's the size i'd like it to be (i'm not concerned with printing this pdf.. monitor only)
the images when view full size in the pdf are a bit smaller than viewing the original images full size however, the quality is a lot worse.
honestly, i'll try or retry your suggestions but at this point, i'm more/less looking for an explanation as to why this happens because from what i can tell, it's going to happen no matter what

The jpg is contrasty and it is lower resolution than you need, but you did say that above. Which means I am not looking at what you are looking at.
The color space is srgb and the conversion from the tiff would have reduced the quality a little or a lot depending on your settings.
it doesn't matter if i use the original tiff or the jpg.. for all intents and purposes, let's forget i even have the tiff.. the jpg should look the same in the pdf (imo)
Did you print to pdf or Export? If you exported, did you use "Best" as your setting.
i've done all sort of methods.. but yeah, always at highest quality if said method allows such settings..
It has lost some contrast and is a little blurry. It looks to my eye like the degradation you get from setting the jpeg quality a little low.
well, no.. it has gone from something that is in focus to something that is out of focus.. if i open the jpg in photoshop and do a 'save as' jpg with the quality set to 3 (with 12 being best), i will get similar results as putting the jpg in a pdf.. (albeit, a different type of quality loss but just as bad)

that's a screenshot showing the jpg on the right and the pdf output on the left (both viewed in preview)..
it's unacceptable.. but like i said earlier, i think this is an inherent aspect of pdfs and i'd settle for a decent explanation as to why it happens..
OSX has some very smart frameworks built in, which do make bitmaps displayed on screen in Cocoa apps look better than they should. Not exactly helpful if you simply want to see it unenhanced.
but still, if that's the case, why isn't osx doing the same thing to the pdf.. (and also, i highly doubt the actual quality of the image is being shown in the pdf but when i view the jpg, i'm being shown an enhanced view to the point of making an out-of-focus image being an in focus image.

Image quality in PDF output

When my iBook is exported to PDF or Print/Save as PDF several images have very degraded image quality. The same image prints well from pages. Any suggestions/ideas?

The same image printed from Pages looks fine.
I've inserted PDF, png, jpg (will probably try TIF/GIF next) all display the same degradation.
When a JPG is inserted as the Chapter intro image in iBooksAuthor it looks fine/much better.

Image Quality in PDF Reports

Hi,
I have a rectangular JPG image which is holding the company logo. Most of the image's background is coloured white.
If I import the image into MS Word for example, when I print out the document the image is very high quality, sharp, etc.
When I import this image into an Oracle Reports via menu: insert / image, although it appears fine when looking at it in Report Builder on the 'Paper Layout', when I run the report the image in the output PDF has lost quality and when printed out, the white background (which should be white) prints as as a light shade of grey.
Does anyone know how to stop the loss of quality on the image and how to stop the background of the image printing as light grey ?
I'm running Report Builder 10.1.2.0.2.

Maximum Image Quality for PDF Export

I'm having a pretty big pain with some of my images, and I wanted to make sure that when i'm exporting my document to a PDF, I'm getting the very best resolution possible. I've attached a screenshot of the settings I'm using... are these the best settings I can set for getting the best resolution from my PDF

First, the cost of printng isn't necessarily directly related to quality. There are too many factors such as full color and additional spot plates, the size of the run, and the size and type of the press to make any judgements based on price, not to mention the skill and standards of the printer. And then you still have many printers willing to do the same quality work at a variety of prices depending on location, market, and how busy they are. Kind of like making a genearlization about the price of a car.
@ Luke, setting downsampling to none will guarantee that all images are sent at full resolution, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. As already pointed out there is no advantage in sending more data than required to print the image. The OP has alread chosen ZIP compression, which is lossless, so he isn't introducing any jpeg artifacts, so all the downsampling is doing is setting a ceiling above which images will be downsampled. Images below that threshold will be sent at full res.

Losing vector image quality in PDF

I have created designs in PS using vectors which were all hi res, when saving to PDF the images are all terrible quality- except the script that I have added which remains crystal clear. I have gone back and checked the saved resolution and it was fine. Any suggestions?

Photoshop rasterizes PDFs when opening them. Try saving to PSD or TIFF formats instead.

Image quality with PDF gallery pages

Hello,
I'm a bit disappointed in the quality of the artwork in the PDFs that I create with Bridge output. They're very pixelated. My original artwork is just vector EPS files. Why can't Bridge create vector output in the PDFs? I chose the highest quality in the settings there.

Crystal Reports Developer 11 - image quality in exported pdf file

I need to create a report with many images and export it to a pdf file. The image quality in the pdf file is slightly lower than in the rpt file. Can someone tell me how to increase the image quality in pdf file?

Poor Image Quality when Printing PDF from Office 07 using Acrobat 9 Pro Ext

Hi there,
Hoping to figure out why my images (jpegs, gifs, pngs, etc) seem to print in very poor quality when printing from Powerpoint and Word 2007?
When I actually print out the pdf onto paper, the images seem fine. The image quality is also good in Word and Excel
I did not have this problem using Office 2003 products.
Is this a common problem? I realize that the problem maybe Office related but any help or information appreciated.

If the images' file format is PNG or TIFF you could play with the compression settings available in Acrobat's Preferences.
Edit > Preferences > select the Category "Convert to PDF".
In the"Converting To PDF" pane, select PNG or TIFF.
Then, click on the Edit Settings" button.
For either image format you could try one of the Lossless compression routines.

Image quality issues in PS - word to PDF

I am having major image quality issues when trying to make my word document a clean, clear PDF. Images become distorted. Borders for tables and text that are equal px size look like they are different sizes throughout the document.
I have searched the internet, read help, and tried many different things:
Word 2007 - Changed image %, image size, export options, adjusted px for borders, used different styles
Acrobat 9 Pro - Changed import settings, import options, print options, tried press quality, high quality, etc.
Photoshop CS4 - Changed ppx, file format, compression options
What can I do to get a clean, clear PDF file with the images and borders preserved?

In converting a MS Office file to PDF, Photoshop cannot help in any way and will likely cause more harm as it may rasterize vector data. Expect your ideal answer in the Acrobat forum.

Image quality takes a hit in Word PDF conversion despite Compression being Off (Acrobat 9)

When converting a Word doc to PDF, the image quality for embedded pictures seems to be taking a hit. In the resultant PDF, the large pictures have jagged edges, even though when I increase the size in the Word doc the picture looks smooth and high quality.
Under preferences I've changed the Conversion Settings>Images to have Downsampling off for Color/Grayscale/Monochrome images, and also set Compression to Off. I've also tried setting Compression to Automatic (JPEG) with Maximum quality for Color/Grayscale. Both Compression Off and Maximum quality seem to have almost the same image quality, even though Compression Off doubles the size of the file. Neither has quality quite at the level it is in the Word doc.
Is there some way to have the image quality for pictures in the PDF equal what it looks like in Word? Are there any more settings I should be aware of?
I have Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and Office 2007 on Vista 64.

What's the original file format of the images you're inserting into Word, and are they at 100% scale?
We've seen issues with scaled high-res images (like header logos) which printed to PDF perfectly with a GIF or JPEG image, but failed dismally with a PNG even though the image resolution was identical and on-screen view was the same. Word has a quirky way of handling image data sent to the print spool compared to what's shown on-screen.

Image quality problem when Printing Booklet to PDF

Hi!
I've searched the entire web trying to find a working solution for my problem but I wasn't able to find anything...
I've created a A5 vertical page document in InDesign CS6, filled with High-Quality photographs. I now want to print it as a booklet (to a PDF file) so I can save it and print it in a professional establishment.
The problem is, when I do this, the image quality turns out terrible...
I've checked my Print Settings and I can't find anything wrong...
Setup - A4 horizontally, and Graphics - Images - Send Data - is set to All.
Is there anything else I can do/try? What can I be doing wrong?

When I export the document normally to PDF the image quality is fine, but it doesn't have the booklet layout which I need, it just exports single A5 pages one after the other. If I try to print this pdf as a booklet in Adobe Reader the same thing happens to the images, they loose quality.

There's definetly something wrong with the PDF printer properties... It was on standard default, as you said... but it still didn't work when I changed it to press quality (also tried high-quality print), changed the dpi's and other few settings on the advanced preferences
My solution was to download a free-trial of a professional pdf editor/creator (Soda PDF) and print it to that program... but, of course, this is not a long-term solution...
I'll try and see if I can find any help in changing the settings to get the best quality in printing of the adobe acrobat program.

!! Exporting SWF file in PDF reduces image quality.

I have a file with many multi-state picture frames and buttons for them. I export it in pieces in SWF format, then I put the SWF's back in the document as a new layer and export as interactive PDF. Finally everything worked fine, except that PDF opens in a larger then normal zoom and when zooming in on pictures the quality is very poor I am guessing 72ppi at the intended zoom. I check the SWF file and see that its image quality is good when zoomed, so the problem is with the way the PDF has exported the SWF.
notes: I made sure the settings were to export at 300ppi and high image quality. When I take a single multi-state frame with its associated button and export to SWF then PDF the image quality is maintained.... however I have over 150 image frames, so I rather not export them individually. Please, please reply... any suggestions will be gratefully excepted.

edit your image in photoshop and experiment with various settings/size. there's no magic high quality small file size setting.
it's a trade-off. the higher the quality and the greater the image dimensions, the greater the file size. you have to decide where those are acceptable.
