HORRIBLE AUDIO!

On one of my recent shoots I used a multi-camera setup. The main camera had the audio fed directly into it via XLR. The only problem I have is that my audio feed is horrible because my camera man on the main camera didnt monitor his audio so the audio peaks the entire performance giving me a large amount of distortion. Is there any filter of some sort within Final Cut that will clean the audio and give me decent sound? I have already dropped the audio level to -12db and I am still getting horrible distortion... HELP!
Thanks,

Not sure if your going to like this, but its the only think I can think of if your in a realy tight spot;
Adobe makes a product called Audition (2.0 is the latest) that offers Digital Clip restoration, which is specifically designed to correct digitial clipping issues. Then you can compress etc and get 'better' sound than you may currently have... the sad part is that there is no MAC version and you have to run it on a PC;
I would have thought that apple offered something like this, but I cant seen to find any thing to relates;
The following article has some good info on the methodology to clean up audio before restoring the clipping:
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mizdpcm/is_200404/aiziff122742
They also list some tools and the retail costs;
failing that, and assuming your not in a rush - if you provided a sample of the audio with some clipping, I'd be pleased to run it through my older version (v1.5 is what I have v2.0 is newest) of Adobe Audition and see what the results are like on your sample... It would be interesting, I'm by no means an expect with audition, it came with my copy of the production suite when I was editing on my PC...

  • Final Cut Just started crashing and horrible audio

A little background in case it is important, otherwise sorry for the boring stuff. I have been working with Final Cut Studio 6.o on this Mac with Leopard for about a year and a half. I was slowly becoming a Mac believer. I installed Snow Leopard and upgraded to FC 7 a month or so ago. All was great. Thursday of last week I had a kernel panic. It occurred within an hour of installing Data Rescue 3, which I believe now was just a coincidence. I uninstalled Data 3 with App Zapper. Wow, everything was back to normal, I edited with no issues on Friday. Monday, back to edit and I can't keep the computer on without a kernel panic. I diligently followed all the advice I could on the forum. Made sure everything was current with updates. FCS, Sonnet, Snow Leopard etc. I deleted a lot of "bad" files/folders per the online help. I did and erase and install of Snow Leopard. I solved (stumbled into it most likely) the kernel issue. I went to use FCP7 and when I would add a graphic it would crash. As I tried to play audio, the audio was unintelligible. I did get it to work long enough to make two edits and output a QT to burn a disc. That all worked well. Now it just crashes and plays horrible audio. I did do a reinstall of FCS 7.0. and downloaded and installed an applications update.
Am I missing something? if there is a link with a similar problem send me there please.
I really tried to follow the forum before I posted.

You're probably not going to like hearing this but...
The only way to depend on your system in a professional environment is to do a clean install of OS and Applications. When everything is working fine, clone your startup drive and test the integrity of the clone. NEVER do an update or install any apps that might have an overall impact on your system without making sure your clone is up to date. If and when you have a problem you can always restore your clone to your startup drive and get back to work. If you have a desktop machine and can install a second internal drive to clone to, you can be back at work within minutes. Also, any drive can fail or basic system elements can get corrupted.
And as someone else said, you can be working with non standard formats for months without a problem and suddenly things can go south. What format is the graphic you are adding? Are the pixel dimensions greater than 4000 x4000? Tell us something about what formats you're working in? Have you tried disconnecting ALL peripherals and see if the problem persists>

  • Horrible audio quality

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem, but since the latest version release of Skype for Mac - I am having horrible issues with my audio on Skype. I can barely hear the other person on the end of the Skype call. I've trouble shot this with Apple (I have a new Macbook Pro - less than 6 months old). The audio works fine with Facetime and Google Hangouts, which means it's a problem with Skype. I can only hear the other person on my Skype call if I am plugged in and using a headset - not directly from the speakers. The Apple Genius also went through all of the Skype Support troubleshooting for Mac - and none of that solved it either. I've tried uninstalling Skype and emptying the trash so it's off my Macbook. I've then rebooted and re-installed Skype. No luck. Same issue. Used Skype Chat with their Support and they went through the same steps as the Apple Genius did - none of it worked. The only answer they gave is that a new update just happened and there *might* be a bug. Very, very frustrated.
    Anyone else having this issue?

    Same here.
Not sure for how long but Skype quality is annoying in ALL my devices (PC, iPad 2, iPhone 4S). On the other hand, Hangouts and FaceTime work like a charm.
I'm pretty sure is not you computer nor the App but all Skype apps

  • Horrible audio capturing 2nd stereo channel 12  bit 32,000 kHz

    Hello,
I have DV tapes with 2 stereo channels 12 bit 32,000 kHz. I added a Capture Preset Editor with 16 bit 32,000 kHz 2nd 2 channels.
I captured only the sound of the second 2 channels.
The sound is horrible. At some places there is no sound, at other places noise.
How can I capture this audio with the same quality as when I play the DV tapes on my TV ?
    Thanks,
    Hubert

Use a preset that is 12bit.
Or make one, if one doesn't exist.

  • Horrible Audio Quality from Airport Express

Last night, I purchased an Airport Express for the sole purpose of using it as a client on my already exsiting 802.11g wireless network to play my iTunes on my living room stero. It took me a while to get the configuration set up correctly, but I finally have it so that it is communicating with the network and sending information and iTunes to the AirPort.
My problem is that the audio quality on my stero system is horrendous (i.e. unlistenable). It sounds like I'm listening to a radio broadcast from way out of range.
Here's the odd part - the connector cable to my stereo works fine with other audio devices (i.e. my iPod) - and the Airport Express works fine with just my headphones. So, there is no problem hooking into the stereo and no problem with range or communication between my iTunes, network and the Airport.
I think this issue problably has something to do with the levels from the Airport unit into my stereo, but I don't know exactly what my next move should be. The only thing I'm quite convinced about is there must be a very simple answer to this problem which has had me pulling my hair out for hours now.
If anyone could suggest something that could help, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi cozmocramernyc,
    I am glad it works.
I use the Digital Optical cable instead the standard cable and the audio is Awesome.

  • There is a HORRIBLE audio distortion whenever I try to play movies in iTunes now.

If  repeatedly close and reopen the window, about every 10th try I can open a movie with minimal distortion so that words are discernable, but it's choppy and desynced. I'm not the most tech-savvy person, but between myself and the others who've heard it, "demonic gremlins" is about the best descriptor for what it sounds like.
It only affects movies. I can listen to music fine.
The question here is how do I fix it so that I can actually listen to the movies I've purchased?

    Hello Terri_B,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Horrible/distorted audio quality and no bass! Hardware failure?

I have a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound which is built-in onto my MSI P6N Diamond motherboard. I've had this motherboard since June and I never had audio problems. I left my PC on as usual overnight last night and this morning I woke up to find my audio is distorted and I have no bass. All of the audio is distorted (as in very low pitch, low powered, no bass.). In adition, it is like somebody turned down the volume. It seems like its down to maybe 20% of its original power even when I set it 100%.
This was under Vista. Since I dual-boot with XP, I rebooted into XP. Guess what? Yep, horrible audio problems which means something happened over-night on the hardware level (since if was drivers/software related it couldn't have effected my XP install, which was not even running over night)
I did the standard "reset audio driver values to defaults", reinstalled audio drivers, etc, etc. I knew it wouldn't help (and it didn't). This seems to be on hardware level.
    Any ideas anyone?

I finally tried that this afternoon, no difference. Everything sounds overall like its mono sound, not stereo. In fact when I test my headphone channels (left or right) everything sounds like this coming from center (not usual left right positioning), same goes for the 2.1 speakers I tried. When I do the diagnostic troubleshooting the left or right speaker test always ends up coming from both/center. Like something is forcing mono.
Also, I did notice that when watching some random movies, I can actually hear music/soundtrack clearly albeit a bit muted, while the voices are muffled/distorted. Like some channels are distorted and other are not. Also, disabling the CMSS-3D in the options panel for some reason makes the distortions much worse.

  • ATV Audio is Horrible

Over the last few weeks the audio playback on my ATV has been very unreliable. Practically everything I stream has horrible audio with dialogue that sounds like people are in a tunnel. Everything I have tried to stream from Netflix is totally unacceptable. Many things that I stream from itunes library on my imac are fine. Other things are not. I thought maybe my ATV had something wrong with it so ordered another one. Same issue. Did a restore. Same issue.  Now I am thinking possibly it's the HDMI cable so I have ordered another one of those. I really hope the cable is the problem. Since I don't have TV and I rely on my ATV as my only source of this type entertainment, it's very disappointing, not to mention frustrating, when it doesn't work right.
Maybe I should get a Roku.
Anyone else having this problem and found the solution?

This is what I am saying, the actual audio quality is good I have already compared and there is nothing wrong with your driver as it gives the good audio output to your headphones. did you also notice that its crazy loud? even puting on the minimum volume it sounds quite loud. Your iMac speakers arn't normal they are $10 speakers. also this high volume has a nagative effect on your amplifer by overloding it cuts off the low frequencies and makes it sound tiny. the only way is if there is a different driver for your mac soundcard. I guess its for all macs the same audiocard or driver. Good Luck!

  • Skipping/Poor Audio in iTunes 6.0.1

I'm getting horrible audio playback in iTunes 6.0.1 (after upgrading to both that and OS 10.4.3). Every song plays through with small hiccups/skips that are noticable and annoying. The files play fine through my iPod, so the files don't seem to be the issue. Anyone else having this problem? Any thoughts?

As a test, try playing one of the songs that are skipping using the QuickTime Player instead of iTunes. Does the problem go away once you're out of iTunes?
I'm having the same problem with iTunes 4.9. The twist is that in my case it is only happening on AIFF formatted files. mp3's and mp4's work fine, and the AIFF file plays fine in QuickTime Player.
I've tried all the recommended fixes floating around these discussion groups, but nothing fixes the problem. It is very annoying.

Increase Playback buffers on audio software you're using (set to 000 - 2000) or try ASIO capable player.
Increase PCI Latency for sound card to 64 (you find the tool by searching after "PCI Latency" here on this forum or with google).

  • Ios 7.0.4 audio issue

I updated my iPad 2 to iOS 7.0.4 that was released today. Now I have horrible audio issues. As I type there is this weird sound, like a "wisp" sound or something. When I lock my screen it's a loud buzz sound extremely annoying. The worst part is when I play videos, like I always do on my iPad, it just sounds really bad, very distorted. I just got a notification as I am typing this and it made the normal bing sound, but then a "wisp" sound at the end. This thing is basically useless if I want audio, who knows what else is messed up now. It's bad enough iOS 7 has been buggy, but this new version makes my iPad 2 basically unusable.
Also I don't sync this with a computer, it's meant to be my iTunes, amazon and podcast standalone tablet, like Apple allows me to do, so no backup, never thought I would have to backup an OS because Apple didn't test. Not to sound bitter or anything, but I expect more from Apple, can't use this thing for entertainment until they fix this.

    Try reset all settings
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
Note: Data will not be affected but settings will be reset.

  • Merge clips and preserve audio clip names?

    Hey Guys,
I'm about to start editing a new project of mine that I just shot.  I used Premiere to edit my last project and loved it, save one problem I had after using the "Merge Clips" feature to sync my audio.  In order to save time, I used Merge Clips to sync my picture and sound rather than do it manually.  The feature worked really well, but I didn't notice until it came time to export my OMF that the "Merge Clips" feature had renamed all of my audio clips to the same name as the video clip it was sunc to.  This resulted in many broken links in the OMF.
Is there any way to use "Merge Clips" or a feature similar to it, that preserves the names and metadata of the master clips you're syncing?  I might just do it all by hand to be safe.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I do believe we've uncovered (yet another) bug. For the life of me, I couldn't get a video to sync to its respective WAV. The audio from both sources was clean and clear; if Premiere couldn't auto sync this, it couldn't sync anything...
Then the funny part: it could sync everything else together perfectly (DSLR, GoPro, HDV). I must admit I was impressed, GoPros record fairly horrible audio- but Premiere managed to sync them  accurately and quickly with the other cameras. It just treated the external audio as foreign and refused it.
Can someone from Adobe chime in? I'm here for questions.

  • Export audio issues. Need fix soon.

It seems like I am having an issue that may be opposite to most issues.
I am trying to export my presentation and no matter what I try, it always includes full volume for every video. I even have the volume slider set to nothing for every single video. When I play my presentation back on my computer in presenter mode, it works fine. But when it exports to any file type it just includes everything into one big horrible audio mess. And as a bonus, it keeps playing the video's audio after the slides transition. Believe me, the middle of the presentation sounds like an exorcism.
    I have Keynote 6.2
I really need a fix for this pronto. This presentation has my job on the line. If anyone has any ideas, that would be great.
Since Apple makes us find our own solutions to their bugs...
    Thanks.

There are a number of unfinished controls that Apple needs to address with Quicktime export.
Changing the sound volume does not carry over in the export.
I don't export to Quicktime anything other than stills and an audio track because of these issues, instead I use Final Cut Pro for all video work.
