Horrible network performance when transfering from Vista to OS 10.4.11

When I connect from my MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11 to my PC running Windows Vista and attempt to transfer large files, the speed is painfully slow. A 1GB file can take several hours. It sends in bursts: 3-4MB come quickly, then it stops for a while, then 3-4MB more comes quickly, etc.
Prior to installing Vista, I got normal LAN speeds between my XP and MacBook Pro. Since installing Vista, I have this problem.
Interestingly, if I login to two different ICQ accounts - one on the Mac, one of the PC, it will send files MUCH faster. The problem seems to be on the PC end, perhaps with the file and print sharing protocol, but I haven't been able to figure it out.
Any ideas?

actually, there's nothing wrong with vista itself. i've been running it on my PC for several months now without a single hitch.
are you entirely sure you're connecting to the PC properly?
also, "upgrade" to XP... good one. while you're at it, how about "upgrading" to OS 9?

  • ZBook 17 g2 - poor DPC Latency performance when running from z Turbo Drive PCIe SSD

    I'm setting up a new zBook 17 g2 and am getting very poor DPC latency performance (> 6000 us) when running from the PCIe SSD. I've re-installed the OS (Win 7 64 bit) on both the PCIe SSD and a SATA HDD and the DPC latency performance is fine when running from the HDD (50 - 100 us) but horrible when running from the PCIe SSD (> 6000 us).  I've updated the BIOS and tried every combination of driver and component enabling/disabling I can think of.  The DPC latency is extremely high from the initial Windows install with no drivers installed.  Adding drivers seems to have no effect on the DPC latency. Before purchasing the laptop I found this review: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-HP-ZBook-17-E9X11AA-ABA-Workstation.106222.0.html where the DPC latency measurement (middle of the page) looks OK.  Of course, this is the prior version of the laptop and I believe it does not have the PCIe SSD.  Combining that with the fact that I get fine performance when running from the HDD I am led to believe that the PCIe SSD is the cause of the problem. Has anyone found a solution to this problem?  As it stands right now my zBook is not usable for digital audio work when running from the PCIe SSD.  But it cost me a lot of money so I'd sure like to use it...! Thanks, rgames

    Hi mooktank, No solution yet but, as of about six weeks ago, HP at least acknowledged that it's a problem (finally).  I reproduced it perfectly on another zBook 17 g2 and another PCIe SSD in the same laptop and HP was able to reproduce the problem as well.  So the problem is clearly in the BIOS or with some driver related to the PCIe SSD.  It could also be with the firmware in the drive, itself, but I can't find any other PCIe drives in the 60 mm form factor.  So there's no way to see if a differnt type of drive would fix the problem. My suspicion is that it's related to the PCIe sleep states - those are known to cause exactly these types of problems because the drive takes quick "naps" to save power and there's a delay when it is told to wake back up.  That delay causes a delay in the audio buffer that results in pops/crackles/stutters that would never be noticed doing other tasks like video editing or CAD work .  So it's a problem specific to folks who need low-latency audio performance (very few apps require low latency audio - video editing, for example, uses huge buffers with relatively high latency).  A lot of desktops offer a BIOS option to disable those sleep states but no such option exists in HP's BIOS for that laptop.  In theory you can do it from within Windows but it doesn't have an effect on my system.  That might be one of those options that Windows allows you to change but that actually has no effect. One workaround is to disable CPU throttling.  That makes the CPU run at full speed all the time and, I believe, also disables the PCIe and other sleep states.  When I disable CPU throttling, DPC latency goes back to normal.  However, the CPU is then running full-speed all the time so your battery life basically goes to nothing and the laptop gets *very* hot. Clearly that is not necessary because the laptop runs fine from the SATA SSD.  HP needs to fix the latency problem associated with the PCIe drive. The next logical step is to provide a BIOS update that provides a way to disable the PCIe sleep states without disabling CPU throttling, like on many desktop systems.  The bad news is that HP tech support is not very technical, so it takes forever for them to figure out what I'm talking about.  It took a couple months for them to start using the DPC Latency checker. Hopefully there will be a fix at some point... in the meantime, I hope that HP sends me a check for spending so much time educating their techs on how computers work.  And for countless hours lost re-installing different OSes only to show that the performance is exactly the same as shown in the DPC Latency checker. rgames

  • I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?

    I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro (which belonged to them) to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?  And is there any danger, in doing so, that I might delete any of her ICloud information ?

    Sign out in System Preferences>iCloud. This will remove any synced data such as Calendars, emails and Contacts from your Mac, but will have no effect on the data on the server - so that other devices logged into it will continue to see the data.

  • Attribute support when transferring from Java to HTML in CF9

    CF beginner.
    When transferring from flash to HTML format, is there a way to control attributes which are not accessible through tags (for example HSCROLL and WIDTH in CFTREE)? Seems like going modifying the Ext JS object is the only way (for example using ColdFusion.Grid.getGridObject) as described in CFML reference but this apparently only works for editable objects. Is this the correct approach? Are there other ways of doing this? staying with a non-HTML format is not an option and so any help is greatly appreciated
    Disclaimer: just starting with CF and haven't had a chance to try these things in practice.

    As TD said... and you could upgrade to iPhoto 9 for $15 from the Mac App Store . Are your captions worth $15?
    One thing to note: Upgrading your library from 2005 to the latest iPhoto won't necessarily be without issues either although iPhoto 9 has been out for awhile and most of the bugs should be worked out by now.

  • Cannot find picture when transferring from Aperture to PSE 11

    Cannot find picture when transferring from Aperture to PSE 11
    I have an older version of PSE and when I transferred a picture from Aperture to PSE9 it would open PSE9 and show the picture.
    I set the Preps in Aperture for PSE 11 and the PSE 11 opens but no picture in the box or photo bin or in the top left "open".
    I changed the Aperture setting to the PSE Organizer and the same thing happened Organizer open BUT there was no picture to be found.
    In Aperture it shows the file being transferred.
    I looked in the PSE 11 preps and file but could not find anything.
    The fact that it opens the PSE 11 app tells me it is being recognized but the picture (file) is going somewhere else.
    Thanks

  • Why are Network Settings not Transferring from a Master DMG to the Desitination

    Hi people,
    can anyone assist me with finding out why Network Settings are NOT transferred from a source Master HD to a DMG to a Destination HD.
    I have many hours spent trying to debug this - any pointers to a solution would be greatly appreciated.
    Background:
    I administer about 400 Macs of mixed types / generations (iMacs - MacBooks - MacBook Pro's).
    We create master setups for different locations / purposes around the Campus and transfer these masters to DMGs.
    We then clone the various macs as needed from these DMGs using a variety of methods including local (FW800 - USB) and network transfers.
    The newest master (staffHD at 10-8-2) works perfectly but trying to clone / copy it by any method leaves out the custom network settings and you only end up with the default Wi-Fi / Ethernet / Firewire with total loss of the additional services and custom proxy settings.
    Methods used to date to try the transfer (all get the same null result)
    to-from DMG using Disk Utility
    to-from Sparse Image via Disk Utility
    to-from DMG using Carbon Copy Cloner
    to-from Sparse Image via Carbon Copy Cloner
    direct to 'target disk' via FW800 using Disk Utility
    direct to 'target disk via FW800 using Carbon Copy Cloner
    direct to 'target disk via FW800 using rsync -aHv
    direct to 'target disk via FW800 using cp -Rv
    Everything BUT the network settings transfer perfectly (excluding of course the usual trackpad / mouse custom settings).
    I guess something is wrong with this master source but for the life of me I can't work it out. I have seen it in the past but it seemed to work itself out with the next revision - this one just wont.
    HELP!
    Have a Great day!

    Hi Linc,
    thanks for the reply - I suspected a hardware issue or some sort of privledges problem, but as far as I know have only had this problem with Mountain Lion, and it still fails on hardware like to like transfers. I was hoping to avoid needing anything addidtional but it looks like I'll have to.

  • 3000 N100 lost network connection when resuming from standby

    My Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop seems to lose it's network connection when it resumes from standby.  I have to restart the machine in order to reconnect to the ethernet network.  Running WindowsXP Pro.  Any advice or suggestions?
    Thanks,

    Sorry for presumption that it was wireless connection issues, it might work since the solution involves tweaking or changing power management settings.
    However, if does not work you can still look for the solution in that website by entering the problem in the search dialogue box and clicking "search site"

  • Blurry photos in iPhoto 11 when transferring from iPhoto 6 on different computer

    I recently bought a new MacBook Pro and I'm transferring my files over from my old MacBook.  When I moved my photos from the old one (running iPhoto 6) over to the new one (running iPhoto 11), the images look horrible.  They're all blurry and I can't enlarge them hardly at all without them looking really bad.  Does anyone know why this would be and how I can fix it?  Thank you in advance!

    The key question here is what exactly did you move, and how?
    This sounds very like you either copied only the thumbnails from the older machine or you imported one Library to another.
    FWIW
    To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
    Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661"><b><u>Firewire Target Disk Mode</b></u></a>, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
    But however you do choose to link the two machines...
    Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
    This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Problem with track order (ID3 tags) when transfering from ZENcast Organizer = Vision:M 3

    Hi there, I am using ZENcast Organizer V.2.00.4 and my Zen Vision:M's firmware version is V..6.0e
    Okay, I have a time consuming problem with the way my podcasts are organized on my player. When i download my podcast from ZENcast Organizer everything is neatly organized. By that i mean that the tracks are positioned in the order in which they were released by the radioshow. Let me just give you a picture : [IMG]ttp://img530.imageshack.us/img530/4476/zencastbv4.jpg[/IMG]you can see that after the 27th comes the 28th and the 29th etc. That is also the way i would want the files to be played on my player, but unfortunately they are not.
    Here is a pic of what the order looks like on my player after i have transfered some of the podcasts . Since there are no ID3 tags concerning track number, the player seems to sort the files alphabetically, which is a hassle for me as i have to search through my tracks each time I would like to listen to the following show.
    The way that I have dealt with it until now is to download the tracks with ZENcast Organizer and then add the track number information with Media Monkey and then upload them to the player via Zencast Organizer. That is a lengthy and annoying process and since i have missed the show (due to my new work) for 4 month now, i have a lot of files that i must edit.
    So I was just wondering if there is an easier method? I was thinking in the lines of a plugin for ZENcast Organizer that would add track number information? I wouldn't care if it numbers them 2 3 4 or 2 22 23 24 just as long as they come in the chronologically right order when i play them.

    I did some testing and discovered that ZENcast Organizer indeed does know how to sort the files on my player so that they are played in the right order - under the transfer you just have to check the box which makes ZENcast Organizer convert the music (mp3) files into videofiles as shown in the picture: http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/439...ransferar5.jpg
    This makes my player play them in the right order as shown here:
    But i do not want player to be spending a huge amount of unnecessary power on showing a screen I am not going to be looking at.... my podcast is a radio show, there is nothing to LOOK at, literally.
    Why on earth does ZENcast not change the filename when i choose to download the shows in their nati've mp3 form but only when I convert them to video?

  • Wheres the old network documentation when installing from 2010 source?

    wheres the old network style wiki resources for users who install from a 2010 source?  Im installing from a 2010.05 core, and it uses the old network config in rc.conf.
    example
    #rc.conf
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    eth0="dhcp"
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.254"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    #resolv.conf
    nameserver=8.8.8.8
    nameserver=8.8.4.4
    i can ping my gateway and lan members, but i cant ping 8.8.8.8, so that makes sense why i cant ping google.com
    am i just not adresing all the conf files, or is this a gateway issue?  also, i couldnt get dhcp to work.  I set it that way first, it wouldnt not grab an ip.  Then once i set it static, and then back to dhcp, it reverts to the static ip either way.
    [we really need a resource that shows up on a google search of "arch ROUTES(", or "arch ROUTES(!gateway)", or "arch INTERFACES=" because if users only have access to an older install source (i left my newer source at work, doh), we want them to be up and running, and updated right away]

    Patches welcome :-)
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?ti … did=111704 - it's not pretty, but you can look at the code:
    ==Networking==
    * {{Codeline|[[HOSTNAME]]}}: Set this to the hostname of the machine, without the domain part. This is totally your choice, as long as you stick to letters, digits and a few common special characters like the dash. Don't be too creative here, though, and when in doubt, use the default.
    * {{Codeline|INTERFACES}}: Here you define the settings for your networking interfaces. The default lines and the included comments explain the setup well enough. If you do not use DHCP to configure a device, just keep in mind that the value of the variable (whose name must be equal to the name of the device which is supposed to be configured) equals the line which would be appended to the {{Codeline|ifconfig}} command if you were to configure the device manually in the shell.
    * {{Codeline|ROUTES}}: You can define your own static network routes with arbitrary names here. Look at the example for a default gateway to get the idea. Basically the quoted part is identical to what you'd pass to a manual route add command, therefore reading man route is recommended if you don't know what to write here, or simply leave this alone.
    * {{Codeline|NETWORKS}}: This enables certain [[network profiles]] at boot-up. Network profiles provide a convenient way of managing multiple network configurations, and are intended to replace the standard {{Codeline|INTERFACES}}/{{Codeline|ROUTES}} setup that is still recommended for systems with only one network configuration. If your computer will be connecting to various networks at various times (e.g., a laptop) then you can configure profiles in the {{Filename|/etc/network.d}} directory. There are template files included in {{Filename|/etc/network.d/examples}} that can be used to create new profiles.

  • Aperture 3 Issues when transferring from old Mac to new Mac

    I just bought a new iMac 21.5 yesterday. I transferred all my apps and files from the old 17 inch from my Time Machine Backup.
    I am running Ap 3.0.3 - RAW 3.0.2 - all software updates I can find are installed.
    Have reinstalled 3.0.3 Aperture update
    MOst things seem to have worked fine except Aperture.
    Some images in some projects either don't display at all, some just have the white box, some are just black, some are full of odd noise (as if the raw version wasnt supported)...
    All displayed perfectly before the move - the files are on my drive.
    All are in JPG format.
    Help please!

    I had this same problem but now I think it is as "solved" as it can be. I tried rebuilding multiple times, and I even created a new library and imported my old one into it. After lengthy discussions with Apple support, it seems the problem is a conflict between Snow Leopard 10.6.3, Aperture 3, and the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card. The good news is that Apple is aware of the problem and is working on it, the bad news is that they haven't yet fixed it.
    I followed the Apple tech's recommendation and it seemed to mostly fix the problem. He had me roll back from 10.6.3 to 10.6.2. You'll need to boot from your Snow Leopard install disc and re-install SL (no, this will not do anything to your files). Then, go to the Apple website and download the 10.6.2 combo update and install. (i.e., do not allow the computer to do an automatic software upgrade to 10.6.3 like it wants to).
    What I get now is my Aperture 3 working much faster and with none of the strange artifacts I had before. The only exception is when I'm viewing a photo in full screen mode - for some shots I'm still getting the weirdness. However, this is still a huge improvement over what I had before - I can now actually use Aperture again
    Good luck!

  • HT201317 issues seeing all photos when transfering from iphone5 to pc/mac

    I'm having issues transferring photos from my iphone5 to pc/mac. I have over 200 photos on my phone however when I go to transfer only the last 20 or so photos are visible to transfer. why is this the case? it was working ok before now I cannot access all my photos from the computer. please help!

    Whenever you plug in your iPhone to your Mac with iPhoto installed, iPhoto will automatically open up a screen giving you the option to download the photos in your iPhone...At least that's how it's set up in my computer. But I believe that's for photos taken by the iPhone.
    Besides what said above, there is a iPhone Transfer Column which includes the tutorial about How to transfer photo/pictures from iPhone to Mac.
    Hope it can do you a favor.
    I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • No shared network access when booted from Firewire

    I can't seem to access any volumes on my network when my MacMini is booted from an ext. firewire drive. I've tried to do this from two seperate bootable FW drives and I can't access my NAS or any of the other Macs on my network. This is an issue that I just noticed. I have worked with Macs and PCs across networks for a while but I can't figure this one out for some reason.
    I'm running MacMini 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo and I'm on 10.5.8. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

    UPDATED/SOLVED---I finally figured this problem out. **Note: This whole process began with the desire to expand my original MacMini's 75GB HD space and to avoid potential disaster. I have recently been going through a spate of HD failures and I really wanted to avoid such a calamity with my main system volume. So the goal was to, in effect, replace the MacMini's drive without having to open it up by simply buying a new 1TB drive and dropping it into a FW enclosure with a huge fan. I had hoped that a simple BounceBack recover would do the trick but I quickly found out that it was not to be.
    The problem existed on backup copies that were created by my old version (5.1.4) of BounceBack (that I never updated). For whatever reason, that version excludes necessary components for networking when making bootable volumes. Therefore all my external FW drives that were bootable were not truly complete/useable volumes. Here's how I came to that conclusion and how I ultimately solved the problem.
    1. I ended up having to do a reinstall of Leopard. I did this by cloning Leopard install disc to an image file and then restoring that image file to the FW drive. The real purpose of cloning the install disc was to immediately test the veracity of my theory that the problem lay within my BounceBack bootable volumes and not with the FW drives themselves. Sure enough, I found everything to be working perfectly from the newly minted, clean install Leopard FW volume. So then...
    2. ...I cloned the MacMini's orginal internal HD. It was the only volume with my most recent system that did NOT have the aforementioned network access problems and it was the volume from which all of the other BounceBack volumes were created.
    3. I restored this volume to the FW drive and was rewarded with a brand new, expanded and fully working system volume with all my applications and settings intact.
    To be fair, I feel compelled to mention that this is not necessarily an indictment of BounceBack. Again, the copy I was using is several years old and I simply never paid for an update, thinking that the copy I was using was sufficient. I'm willing to bet that the makers of BounceBack solved this problem long ago with one of the many updates since that have been released I first purchased the software. That being said, I'm now using Time Machine for backups of  my system volume while utilizing BounceBack for data on other volumes that don't need to be bootable.

  • Image loses contrast when transferring from ACR to PSE11

    I have a new PC running Windows 8.1 x64 bit and have reinstalled PSE11 from the CD (previously it was installed on a PC running Vista x32 bit).
    Apart from having to go into all my most frequently used sections to re-set the parameters to how I had them before, all seems to be well with one rather irritating exception ...
    I get the image looking just about right in ACR, but when I click Open Image to apply a few final tweaks in the PSE11 Editor, the picture seems to lose contrast in the move.  With my previous setup, once I was satisfied with the general look of the part-edited image in ACR, it appeared pretty much the same when opened in PSE.
    This will have nothing to do with monitor calibration, since the common factor here is the monitor screen.  The issue is to do with the general appearance of the image when viewed in ACR as compared with how it then appears in PSE.  I have the colour space set as sRGB and the PSE viewing parameters as 'optimised for viewing on computer screens' (I don't do that much printing).
    Anyone else experienced this problem?  What have I missed or what can I do to rectify things, please?

    OSX outputs pdfs at 72dpi if there is any transparency such as shadows, reflections, charts and of course directly specified transparency.
    The jpeg is generated from a pdf and is the wrong method of producing an ad, which should remain text/vector to stay sharp, with photographic style images at 300dpi.
    jpegs should only be used for purely photographic material because it makes everything else fuzzy.
    Your ad should be supplied as a vector pdf. If it has photographic material do not use transparency effects and make sure the images are at least 300dpi at final size.
