Horrible Problem!!

Hey out there.
Before we start I like to give out my comp. stats so ya'll know what i'm working with:
COMP: Dual 2GHZ Power PC G5 Tower/OS X(10.4.8)/1 GB DDR ram/150+ gigs HD
GRAPHICS CARD: ATI Radeon 9800 128 MB PRO Mac Edition
MONITOR: 17 Inch Apple Studio Display LCD
Note: All of my software, including my graphic drivers, is updated.
Problem: After installing Burning Crusade (the WoW xpack) on the night of its release, i noticed a few graphical problems on my display. It started out with the occasional set (meaning more than one) of vertical lines across my screen, in disorienting colors such as magenta/purple, ligh green, and white. After opening up WoW, Battlefield 1942, or other full-display software, the problem seemed to go away. Until it started to reoccur often and now it won't even go away.
Now, after updating my drivers, uninstalling ALL of Warcraft (including the xpack), and restarting multiple times (sleeping/shutting off/restarting/relaunching Finder/Open Firmware) it seems to like being on my monitor.
It only changes shapes, colors, and forms. Right now looking at it there are 6 one-inch thick (guestimation) lines on my monitor, in purple and light green. They're running down like wallpaper all over my monitor. There are also thousands of other pixels on the monitor that are other random colors they aren't supposed to be.
If anyone can help me fix this please do! Remember, all of my software is updated including drivers, I got rid of WoW, I tried repairing my hard drive/volume/disks through Disk Utility, but it will only let me verify the disks and not repair them (other than the permissions).

now, i don't want to scare you, but i just spent my weekend retreaving all my data from my LaCie firewire drive... and i had the same error in Disk Utility. i tried Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro... but only Data Rescue from Prosoft was able to help... (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php)
Brilliant tool. the interface is $hit, but i was able to get everything back... and the disk wouldn't even mount before that...
hope you don't have to go throught the same trouble, but just keep Data Rescue in mind...

Horrible problems while mounting BTRFS RAID1 array (on a single HDD)

Since I made my 2TB HDD (Samsung M9T which I bought precisely to make it a BTRFS RAID1 array for data security) into 2 x 1TB btrfs RAID1 array, I keep having horrible mounting problems.
There are two subvolumes on that array:
@data
@sys_backup
fstab entries for them look like so:

Now, I rarely access @sys_backup, but I have never found it not being mounted. @data on the other hand mounts hardly ever.
Most of the time, after boot, then I try to access /mnt/Disk_D mountpoint, it either
A - turns out empty, and running “mount” command confirms there's nothing mounted there. Trying to mount it manually renders absolutely no effect. Not even an error message.
or
B – every program used to access that mountpoint (terminal, file manager, conky displaying free space or anything else) freezes and I have to kill it. Even tryping “/mnt/D” and pressing TAB for autocompletion crashes the terminal.
I then need to reboot anywhere from 1 to 15 more times to get it mount properly.
I had this problem since I started using RAID1 3 months ago. I had it on kernels 3.17, 3.18 and 3.19.
Other things that made no difference include:
➤ adding/removing “device=” option
➤ adding/removing x-systemd.automount option
➤ changing UUIDs o /dev/mapper/... entries
➤ completing scrub on that partition
➤ running dry run btrfs check (no errors indicated)
This is horrible. Is there any solution to it, or is it just the current state of BTRFS? And if it is the later, then what other than btrfs Raid1 solution could be implemented?

The whole discussion I linked is about doing a RAID 1 on a single disk. And the article linked from that discussion is only to prove the point of btrfs self-healing.

The read performance is unchanged. The write performance is 50% of the standard partition, but since it is a data drive, that is not a serious issue. Certainly less serious than data security.

I can't do that because it is a laptop SSD with system + HDD with data.

Horrible problem that started with the 10.5.3 update.

First I'd like to say Hi, because I'm new here.
Here's my problem. I installed the 10.5.3 update about a week ago, the computer wouldn't make it past the gray screen with the Apple and gear on it. After reading through countless discussions on here, I realized my only option was an archive and reinstall. Which I did. I backed up all my important files, reformatted the volume and everything was fine.
The only problem I noticed after the format was the fact that there were weird files appearing in my trash bin, which I read about, and I thought was pretty much nothing of importance. I then proceeded to update to 10.5.3.
So a week goes by, I try waking up my computer from sleep, and it won't. After about 10 minutes I do a hard restart, and I get a folder with a question mark.
Hardware test turned out with no errors.
So I do a repair on the disc using my Leopard install disc, tons of errors pop up, the hard drive is showing up as unmountable, it can't repair any of the problems. At this point I think it's best to format my entire drive, Windows Partition and all. The only problem is, there's one set of important files left on my computer. I want to get them off. A TDM start only shows my Windows partition on the other computer. And I can't mount the disc.
Am I at a dead end? I mean if I HAVE to lose the files, it's not going to be too much of a deal, however I want to know now if there is some chance I can possibly salvage them.
The partition shows up on restarts, when I choose to start it, I get the "Gray Screen of Death" after about 30 seconds.
Also, is there any fix to this problem?

Well, I am not a specialist, but, first, archive and install does not mean you have to reformat the drive. It just puts aside the last system.
Now, if you have or borrow a second Mac, you could link them with a Firewire cable and start your scrambled Mac in slave mode, to try to access the drive from the other system (either from the Finder or any kind of repair utilitiy, then with a software of backup/restore or directly from the Finder) and then repair it just enough to get the files back. Or if you have a external drive, try to install any system there and launch from there, then do the same as above.
At the end of the day, if there is no way to access the internal hard drive, then yes, cry and reformat the whole...

Horrible problem: 10.4.3 and lost disk

Here it is:
After hanging round here trying to solve a different problem I upgraded from 10.4.2.to 10.4.3
Repaired permissions.
Started Logic. Missing samples.
Checked the disk (2nd internal drive) The folder marked VSO containing 300 gig of Vienna Library is listed, but no folder icon beside it.
I go to select the file, it disappears. I run EXS manager, it says'no samples are present.'
Restart. Same problem.
Apple+I on the faulty disk says the disk is 360GB full... and here's the funny thing...
Every other folder on the disk is useable and accessible except the one holding the samples (the largest folder on the disk)
All other Apps seem to be normal.
Any ideas at all would be very gratefully received.

Hi all. having horrible problems

I have been havinga problem with fcpx so here goes
Fcpx is crashing on startup.
I have done all the suggested idea's online . deleing prefferences ect . trashing the app and reinstalling . litterally evrything to my knowledge
Ive even wiped my whole mac and reinstalled the osx (mountain lion) and it still happens.
It worked 4 days ago and now its just not having any of it..
Im running it on a macbook pro retinia on version 10.8.3
Is there any free tech support as I feel after purchasing and staying loyal to final cut pro x that it would seem mad that i would have to buy apple care to solve this issue
sorry if im being nieve or stupid but ive been up for over 20 hours and my brain feels like its shutting down however i really need to solve this issue to complete my project.

Ive had it for over 90 days so unfortunaltely I dont think ill qualify for any help.
I have now gone as far as deleting my projects as hiding them did not work
Before hand i tried to delete all the render files but that prooved unsuccessful for me. (hense then deleting the project files)
Ive litterally just wiped and reinstalled my osx and then reinstalled fcpx but it still just opens for a second before crashing again and giving me a crash report

MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R Motherboard
Corsair TwinX 512MB 400MHz DDR (Setup for dual channel)
ASUS GeForce4 Ti4200 8X AGP
Western Digital 80GB Hard Drive with 8MB Buffer
For some reason, the computer only turns on about 50% of the time. You press the power button, you hear fans spin up, but nothing shows on screen and no windows logon noise. Ive lowered memory timings and raised them and increased memory voltage to 2.7 and 2.75 and nothing helps. Still inconsistent power on problem, any ideas?

It is also recommended that you get a more powerful PSU, i.e., Antec Truepower 430Watts.

Flash mail is attached and we cannot get rid of it-HORRIBLE PROBLEMS

FLASH MAIL somehow got attached to Mozilla and even the Apple Care people could not get rid of it. IT HAS RUINED my computer use. Cannot log on without this thing jamming up the works. Apple could not even contact Mozilla for help. Heck of a way to treat a contributor.

I am having horrible problems getting some examples to work

I am trying to get a couple examples to work from out of Java Examples in a Nutshell, but they are programmed oddly and will not work. I am using a windows 2000 platform with JDK 1.3.1 installed and working properly.

They both compile fine but when I go to run them together I get an error. the command given in the book to run them both together is:
java ShowComponent\Containers
But it does not work. I also tried to append Containers to the bottom of ShowComponent and I got an error that said public class Containers extends JPanel needs to have its own file called Containers.java . . I do not understand that as the file was named correctly for ShowComponent.java. I need to knw either what the true command is for running the programs together or what to name container.java that will make it run inside of ShowContainer.java
this is very frustrating as I need to know these answers for work and no one here in the IT department knows how to program in Java but me

Horrible problem with lost version of film

I don't know what's wrong...
Over the past two days i've been making revisions to a sequence, including two voiceovers. Last night i finished it. Later last night, I showed the sequence to a friend in Digital Cinema Desktop preview, then closed the program, and the turned off the computer.
Now, when I opened my project, it has reverted to a much older version (at least five days old) of my sequence.
Does anyone know where the right version went? I had even exported it as a quicktime file - I know it existed. But now when I open the sequence I only get the version that's five days old.
Is there any advice or reason for this?

1 - did you Save your project before you closed FCE?
2 - look in your Final Cut Express Documents / Autosave Vault folder ... open the most recent backup copy of your project ... your more recent changes should be in the backup copy. They may not all be there, but changes up to about 30 mins before you exited FCE the last time should be there.

Ok got some kind of horrible *** problem (charging)

rite heres the thing, may have left my ipod on all nite and drained the battery.
i've reset the ipod keeps turning back on. i've connected it to the computer to charge, the comp doesnt recognise it, and doesnt charge. wont turn off. and the screen seems 2 always have the apple logo on it. (silver + Black)
its a video ipod. and just keeps coming up with colourless battery signs. i have no idea wat to do. can some1 pls help me. i've only had it since march and dont rele want 2 replace it

Maverick upgrade horrible

I have had horrible problems with the upgrade to Mavericks and had it reinstalled three times but it is still hideously slow and takes ages to respond everytime I go to use it. Should I upgrade the GB?. I have a 27" late 2009 Mac with 4GB and 3.06Gb in use. I have had everything done so far through the help desk but no one has asked me about what memory I have in use and whether this would affect it.

Minimum memory requirements for RAM for Mavericks is 2GB's so 4GB's should be fine.
Apple - OS X Mavericks - Read the technical specifications.
Not enough free disk space can cause system to slow down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow your Mac down.
Seven ways to free up drive space
If it's not a disk space issue, check the startup disk for errors.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important files first before using OS X Recovery.
OS X Recovery does require a broadband high speed internet connection.

MAJOR EXPORT PROBLEMS! PLEASE HELP!

Hello. I hope everyone had a nice holiday. I'll try to be brief. I'm having a horrible problem with exporting my films. I work on a PC. To me, that shouldn't matter, but here's what's been happening. I shoot my films at 23.976 frames on the 5DMII and the 7D. My film got into a film festival. They asked for a 720p mp4 file. OK, no problem. I went under H.264, I exported an HD File, with 23.976 frame rate and I checked both boxes for Max Render and I set a 2-pass. I exported and when I played the vid back through Windows Media Player, it felt fine.
BUT, at the festival this past weekend, I was horrified to discover that my film, and no other films, was having a major sound problem. The audio was about half a second ahead of the footage, so they kind of looked like they were speaking correctly, but their dialogue would finish right before their mouths would. Super embarrassing. All I noted when I saw the tech booth was that they were using a mac laptop hooked to the projector, so I assume maybe it was quicktime they were running? Also, I believe they put all of the vids together as one file so it would run together as one block, but still, I believe most of the other films were shot at 23.976 frames as well, so that shouldn't matter.
I went home, thinking maybe I just wasn't being diligent enough and I needed to really look at the sound. Maybe it was off. But I keep all of the temp tracks, the sound from the dslr, on track 1 and then just mute it. I unmuted and played both tracks, and there's no difference. No echo, no weird delays, they're both perfectly synched up.
I've been having this problem for a long time but this was the first time that I REALLY could see the problem, probably because it was on such a big screen. Just my opinion, but I've found that most festivals are running MAC software and it seems like the vids I export seem to have an audio problem being played through mac programs. Another instance, briefly. I did a screening for a feature I edited. I exported an HD mp4 and put it on a friends MAC. The sound was off when we pre-screened it. I have a PC Toshiba laptop, I ran the vid through windows media player, and it felt much better, so we screened using my laptop and it went fine. But what does that mean?
Has anyone else had this problem? It's not just festivals too. I have a subscription with Vimeo, but every short film that I put up there has some kind of an audio drift problem. It's always minor so some people see it and some people don't, but I'm certain the vids are fine on my timeline. Do I need to export using something else? A different setting? As a quicktime vid? That last question seems kooky since any tutorial I've seen is usually wanting h.264, so I just don't know.
Please let me know if there's anything I can try or if you just have an opinion. Thanks very much.

all of a sudden about half an hr ago my computer froze & went all spastic. i retsarted & now ALL MY SONGS ARE GONE FROM MY IPOD!!! I HAD 10 000+ SONGS HOW DO I GET THEM BACK!?!?!??
please tell me theres a way. when i check the ipod itself it says 0 songs 0 videos but strangely my 87 photos are still on there. also when i reconnect it to the computer it says to restore its factory settings but when i go to update/restoe it says i have 10GB left (its a 60Gb video ipod) so i think the songs are still stored there but i cant access them or something please help me!!

I did a very, very horrible thing...

...and my Address Book has suffered the consequences -- unless anyone out there can help me. I am at a complete loss.
I hadn't backed up in a good while. My HD crashed in a major way. Needed to clean install. Ran out and bought an external drive at the Apple Store. I thought I successfully moved the contents of my old HD to the external for safe keeping. A long, tedious process -- after three days of copying, then a clean install to the HD, reinstalled my programs to the now repaired HD...and I finally began to move documents from the external to the repaired HD.
Yes, I learned my lesson.
However...the clean install obviously erased my address book. My question (sorry to take so long to get to it) is --- are the contents of my old address book somewhere on this external drive. I do not know what the data would be called.
If anyone has any thoughts, help or advice, I would be eternally grateful...you will be forever in my prayers...because -- I have created a horrible problem for my job/career/life with no address book. Help?! Please.

If you use an iPod and use the Contacts feature then you should be able to find all the information sitting on the iPod (in disk mode)… unless you've synchronised the iPod to the new, empty Address Book!

Many 3G with OS 4 Problems FIXED!

I have been having many problems since I upgraded my 3G to the new OS 4 system. I have read hundreds of Posts that all of you have written and I see my problems are _not unique_.
Here is all I will say: "*Reset All Data*" had a HUGE POSITIVE impact on performance on my 3G after the new OS 4 was installed. I was having problems across the board (slow, crashes, loss of data, etc.). My Passcode was not working, the Keyboard was awful, I regretted installing OS 4.
After reading all the Posts, I decided to go ahead and do the "Reset All Data" process. Boy the change was immediate and positive. 99% of my complaints went away immediately.
I am still having problems with the MobileMe "Find My iPhone" process. It is still not accurate at all. But otherwise OS 4 on my iPhone 3G is a success.

Great tip. Did wonders for me. I was having horrible problems and was able to solve most of them with the following:
1-Double hard reset (as soon as the first one finishes booting, reset the second)
2-Complete battery drain and charge (2x)
3-Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
4-Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
There appears to be some kind of memory leak in some Apple apps in iOS4. So if things do get bogged down launch a memory intensive game (Real Racing does it for me) and it seems to resolve it.
The measuring rod I have been using for all my iOS4 problems is how long it takes for Settings to launch. Right after my update it was taking consistently 13 seconds. Now 2 seconds.
As I recall every major update has had problems like this which Apple seemed to resolve in the weeks following the update, (it happened especially with the 2.0 release) but for some reason us users forget that. Okay the update process was horrible with IOS4 on my 3G, but following those steps above, at least now I have a workable phone, which is zippier in some ways. Games for one seem to run smoother in iOS4. I'll give Apple a bit of time to get the problems ironed out.
