HORRIBLE QUALITY

I am having some problems with iMovie and I am wondering if you could give me some advice. I am trying to screen-cast some Google Earth shots and then add microphone audio and music. Ideally, I would like to be able to submit the video to online video sites such as YouTube and Google Video. I would also like to be able to upload to the videos to a online file sharing host, so it could be downloaded in a reasonable time. In either case the video has to be very quality because the Google Earth shots are very detailed.
So far I haved tried Snap Pro Z (demo) for screencasting. It creates a .mov at 640 X 480 at 30 framrate, compression style MPEG-4 and with the best quality compressor.
I then converted it with MPEG Streamclip to .mp4. The details include MPEG4 compressor with 100% quality. The framsize I am using is 640 x 480 (4:3), deinterlaced.
Up until this point it looks very good and has lost barely any quality.
Then I try import it into iMovie. It plays fine and my audio needs are perfectly met in the program. However, when I try to share the video (having tried nearly every option) it looks horrible!
I could of dubbed the audio in with Snap Pro Z but the audio doesn't even compare to what I can do with iMovie.
Can you make any suggestions on how I can get the video in perfect quality (and audio) for Google Video and online download/sharing?
Obviously I don't want the size to be too big, some files I have created have been 1.5mb+.
By the way the Google Video recommends the following for optimal quality:
MPEG4 (mp3 or mp4 audio) at 2 mbps
MPEG2 (mp3 or mp4 audio) at 5 mbps
30 frames per second
640x480 resolution
4:3 frame
de-interlace
Thank you so much.

Hi Luke
Lots of moving around Your material. My guess is that it's not doing the quality
better but rather worse.
AND the way to go from iMovie to iDVD - render function destructive.
Try another way.
a) Close iMovie
b) find the project icon/folder
c) Ctrl-click on it and Show package.
d) in this there are a folder -> Shared Movies -> iDVD
e) in this there is a QT movie nnnnnnn.mov
- You can test this with QT-player to see that it is OK -
START A NEW iDVD project - so that old material will not interfere.
f) drop this into an open theme in iDVD (just inside the edge of the
window) and save it as a desktop image
(if iDVD prior HD/5 You have to add a hack to make this possibly
named HPfurz and install it)
Test this with Apple DVD-player - OK then burn it with iDVD
or Toast if You have and don’t want to re-code the movie.

• Export to movie is HORRIBLE quality!

Hi, my flash movie looks great when it is in it's .swf format. However, when I use the export to .avi option it comes out as REALLY horrible quality. Exporting to quicktime does nothing. I've been looking online and have only found people having the same problems with no solution. I've tried several conversion programs to just convert the swf to avi, but all of them are bad. They're all great in quality but half are fast by a good 30 seconds in sound and the other half replaces my black background to white! People use flash everyday & obviously overcome such a simple problem! What am I doing wrong!!?

Hi,
I'm not totally sure here, but I guess, that Flash uses the video-codecs, that are installed with your OS, so it might just be that the problem lies there. If it is just a one time problem, I might help you by trying to export it myself, as I did not have such problems for a while, if you are looking for a general solution you should offer a little more info about your system and the movie you are trying to convert.
cheers

• Horrible quality in media browser

Hi
It's a big problem for me : all my movies are encoded with a worse quality at any size. So it's published on .mac gallery with horrible quality. So the problem is in the Media browser export qulity. When I use it in iWeb the problem is the same. Nota: my preferences are PAL, I think it's not the problem. Seomeone can help me?

OK : I import from DV cam, I make a project, that's look OK, I share it for media browser, and it's awful when I use that in iWeb, .mac gallery, etc.
http://gallery.mac.com/fabricel#100066
I opened the package. The video in iMovie project/movie/Movies (the shared movie) is look awful too of course. The dv source in iMovie Events/movie/ is OK, no problem. When I "export the movie", it's awful. If I "export with QT", always with iMovie, it's OK. I think there's a problem with a specific codec of iLife'08.

• IPhone 5 Youtube videos have horrible quality even on fast wifi/LTE.

For awhile now I have been watching videos on youtube (and pretty much any other video platform) and have been noticing that occasionally I get HORRIBLE quality. The screen gets blurry, sound quality goes way down. Even if I am connected to home wifi (I have great wifi) it still goes blurry to the point where I would rather just do on the computer. On LTE and 3G I guess it was acceptable but wifi was the kicker. My iPod Touch 4g can have better video playback than my iPhone 5. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am running on 6.0.2.

That's probably simply due to the mobile device version of the video that you are watching just being horrible.
As always, an example link of a video that you are talking about would help.

• New version of iTunes uploads CD with horrible quality?

I just bought the Twilight soundtrack. I listened to it in the car on the way home and it sounded great. When I got home, I put it in my computer and iTunes recognized it and what not. It uploaded the songs and everything. When I listened to the songs in the upload window, they sounded great and normal. However, when I went to my library and listened AND on my iPod, the sound quality is horrible and cheap and sounds like some bad internet download.
I don't know why this happened. The rest of my library sounds fine, and the songs are only poor quality on iTunes library and my actual iPod. iTunes didn't even find any cover art!
I'm really frustrated and confused as to why this is happening. Any help?

I use the error correction selection under preferences-general-import settings and do not seem to have any trouble. It does slow down the import process but not by much. Some of the earlier versions of iTunes seem to have trouble with some of the digital rights protection software but with the more recent versions this does not seem to be an issue. There are also a couple of playback options in both the iPod and the computer iTunes playback that include "enhancing" the playback. Personally I like the off setting but many people enjoy the additional surround sound and boosted dynamics. Hope this helps, I usually scan in the cover art so am not much help for that issue.

• Horrible quality uploading

What's up everyone. I'll throw it out there I'm fairly new to the Mac world, but know enough. I'm trying to upload video to youtube through iMovie. It gets there fine not prblems, until i view it, and the quality is just horrible, looks fine while cutting out scenes and everything but when up on youtube, not the same thing. Any help? anyone know of a way to get rid of this? Can't upload by saving video then going through youtube. Really takes forever for a 3 minute video. Thanks for your time!!!!

From my experence, most video quality on youtube is "just horrible".

• Horrible quality video when shared via iMessage or texting iPhone

Between me and 6 of my friends who have the iPhone 6...we've found that it will take video very well but when sent via iMessage or text and is viewed on any of our iPhone 6's, the quality is so horrible you cannot figure what's happening but in messages. When looking at the video in the messages app on a Ma.. it's fine.

Believe it or not, the recommended size by most networks for an MMS message is still 300 kb.  Because that's the case, the carrier server that the video message is sent to first will recompress the video to a size/quality that is closer to the size requirement, resulting in a drastically lower resolution message.  I know, it *****, right?
Try uploading your videos to YouTube from your phone so that they get to your recipient in a much higher quality.

• Epson Inkjets -- horrible quality printouts, missing colors w/ Tiger 10.4.3

Ever since the updates to Tiger 10.4, my Epson Stylus C82 inkjet (which has worked perfectly for the past three years) will no longer print all four colors. I'm lucky if I can even get a b/w text print that isn't spotty and missing bands of ink all the way down the page. I've cleaned the print heads so many times I've used up half the ink in the brand new Epson CMYK cartridges I'd installed (thinking the problem was old ink). I also tried using a utility that was often suggested on the discussion boards, called Printer Setup Repair, which I think may have somehow made things even worse.
I decided maybe it was just time for a new printer. To experiment, I borrowed my brother-in-law's brand new unused Stylus C86, loaded it with new Epson ink, and it's even worse than the C82 -- it spools, loads the paper, the print heads make like they're laying down the ink, but it spits out a blank page. I can't even get it to give me a nozzle check confirmation pattern after cleaning the print heads in the Printer Utility. I took the cartridges out, thinking maybe the seal wasn't broken at the tips, but of course, they were (too easy -- wishful thinking).
With both printers I'm using the right Epson inks, the same basic all-purpose ink jet paper I've always used, and I'm trying to print simple one-page tests from Mail, Preview, and Safari, nothing fancy like Quark or Photoshop. This is just so bizarre, I can't imagine what's happened. I haven't been able to get a decent print since mid-September.
I should also mention, I first went through the unfortunately popular issue where Epson Printer Utility does not work with the Tiger-bundled Gimp drivers. And the whole thing where it starts to spool something , then crashes. So I installed Epson's latest drivers and set up those in the Printer Setup Utility. Of course, now I'm having trouble sharing my printer, but that's not exactly an issue, since I can't share a printer that doesn't print in the first place. I'm not sure if these issues are related to the aforementioned strange and hideous print quality, except that it all started happening around the same time after the Tiger updates.
Any info or suggestions would be much appreciated (as well as accounts of similar horror stories).
Dual 2.3 GHz Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Epson Stylus C82 and C86 Inkjet Printers

Thank you for replying to my post.
Yes, I can do a nozzle check with the USB unplugged,
and I still get poor results on the C82 and nothing
on the C86. I just can't believe both printers are
broken. The C86 is new, and they were both working
fine previously.
Epsons are notorious for getting their print heads clogged. Run the clean print head routine a few times. If that doesn't work, return the new printer 'cause it's dead out of the box. The old printer, well, once Epson print heads get to a certain level of clogging, nothing will unclog them. Toss the printer and get a new one. Hint: HP and (some) Canon printers put the print heads in the ink cartridges, while Epson and (some) Canons have the print heads in the printers. Machines which have the heads in the carts also have an easy fix for severe clogs: toss the cart. Warning: HP printer drivers stink.
If you don't need colour, you might think seriously about getting a low-end laser.
I just got the C82 to print readably, but still
completely missing magenta and with minimal
fuzziness. This was just dumb luck though, from
letting the printer sit idle for several hours.
It's still clogged. Clean the heads a few times again, or just toss it.
And yes, I've tried setups through the Print & Fax
pref pane, which usually works better than going
through the Printer Setup Utility which tends to
freeze and crash.
I wish I could afford to just buy another printer.
But I'm still worried it's something to do with my
computer, since both printers are having problems
simultaneously, and they're both really good
all-purpose printers.
It's not your machine. It's Epson.

• Every video put into Final Cut Pro exports in horrible quality regardless of format/settings.

Hello fellow Mac enthusiasts,
I'm having a problem which may or may not have been plaguing my studio since day one. Every video that we edit in Final Cut Pro exports in MUCH lower quality than it was when it was imported, not only that, the file size of the newly exported video is several times the size of the original. What I end up getting is a file too large for our clients to email around. We recently had a client come into our studio with a flash drive full of 15 second avi's no larger than 900 KB, he wanted a few of them edited together with simple cross fade transitions, and even a few seconds of dead space cut out. He needed them to be the highest quality possible for a powerpoint presentation he may now be unable to give. At first I exported them as Uncompressed avi's, best quality, thousands of colors, and no sound. The resulting file was not only blurrier, but now 260.5 MB!! And that one was with zero edits! The original was 803 KB and crystal clear. So after that I decided to try a few tests. We also produce a bi-weekly hour-long local television show, which looks fine on television but now I'm wondering how much better it could and should look. I've been exporting that out as a Quicktime, Apple ProRes 442 HQ, Interlaced bottom-field-first, zero filters, both compressor native and NTSC 720 X 480. I attempted this method on the client's original 803 KB with zero edits and not only did it export a completely unusable video compared to the original, but it was now 57.1 MB. What is going on here? Is Final Cut conspiring against me? I'm guessing it's something in my settings which I'll shamefully admit I know absolutely nothing about. Could anyone help a struggling video editor do his job?
Joey

Hey guys sorry it took me song long to respond it's been a busy week filled with many things not relating to final cut...
In response to David's post, the original file is indeed larger than 720X480, though it's dimensions are not available to see in the 'more info' associated with the file itself. By comparison, the apple pro res LT file I exported through final cut of the same avi file is 720X480, and looks significantly worse.

This was after I created a new project, made the sequence settings into Apple ProRes lt 30p under the audio/video settings in Final Cut, and exported it as the same with 'current' dimensions (it was listed as 850X637, maybe that was the original?) Although I did have to render the original avi itself once it was placed in the timeline. I guess there's no way to know exactly what sort of avi my original file is so I can match my sequence to it? The 'more info' (to be fair im sort of used to 'properties') leaves something to be desired..
I guess my question is: what else can I change in my settings to leave the quality of the video intact, if anything?
Thanks everyone.

• Isight with horrible quality in ichat

Connection between two brand new MBP (13" an 15").
Own picture is in way bettwer quality than the big video stream of the counter part.
Quicktime streaming settings were already set to 1,5 MBit.
isight cam works great - at least the pics taken with Photo Booth.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Welcome to the    Discussions
The quality of the incoming picture from your Buddy depends on several factors.
The camera itself at that end.
The Processor at that end.
What other things that processor is doing.
What the Internet Speed is between the two of you. The controlling speed is often the Uplink speed at in end.
Most Intel Macs with an Internal iSight can produce a 640 X 480 pixel picture.
It varies how many frames a second they can master, 15fps is the lower frame rate and 30fps is the Max based on the Processor(s) and cores available.
The Internet connection has got to be able to handle the data at the rate the camera and processor(s) can produce it. (A computer may be able to produce 30fps but you have to be able to stuff that through your (or their) uplink connection).
Of course you have to be able to at least match their Upload speed with your download speed.
Next you have to consider that now you Mac is dealing with two lots of Video (yours and your Buddies). This will impact on your Processor.
Lastly you have to consider what a 640 x 480 pixel pic looks like once you have it expanded/enlarged to a size you can use/view with ease.
You are also comparing the same pic in terms of Pixels displayed at two different sizes even if their is no loss over the internet.
Try it in a graphics app with two pics they have the same number of pixels and show them at different Sizes without altering the Pixel number (i.e zoom rather than any other method)
If there are are great differences in internet speed you can try reducing the bandwidth in iChat > Preferences > Video section to 500kbps to even things out a bit.
Summary.
It's too varied to allow for all the factors in any one connection to talk about this from a global perspective in trying to suggest all the possibilities.
What your processor is doing at anyone time, including mail downloads and Time Machine in Leopard will impact on Processor use. iChat is "rated" to not use the processor in front of other apps so this also needs to be factored in.
What Internet speed each end "bought" normally specifies the download rate as it is faster. It is the Upload speed that is the controlling factor in a Video chat.
The initial quality of the camera does have some bearing by iChat will only produce a 640 x 480 pic as a max.

• Importing & Editing iPhone Video, but end result horrible Quality?? Why?

I imported a few videos from my Iphone to edit in PE7. After editing and rendering, the resulting video looks like crap compared to original. I did a test run of a short clip with no editing whatsoever and rendered as a MPEG2 to upload to a webpage and it still looked horrible compared to the original. The iPhone files are Quicktime .MOV video files. Ive had no other problems before with other sources and just wondering what Im missing. Ive tried googling and cant find any help. Thanks.

There is no project preset for 1080p24 in Premiere Elements 7. It is not until Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 that we do find the opportunity.
NTSC
DSLR
1080p
DSLR 1080p24
So, what to do with a 1080p24 (Stereo audio) and Premiere Elements 7 and end up with a 1080p24 export to file saved to the computer hard drive.
(1) Import with the project preset of
NTSC
AVCHD Full HD 1080i30
The prime objective of the project preset is to direct the program to set up the 1920 x 1080 space in the Edit area monitor. This project preset will serve that purpose until you want to do frame by frame by frame editing which you are unlikely to be involved in.
(2) When it comes to export the 1080p24 Timeline content
Share
Personal Computer
MPEG
with Presets = HD 720p
then under the Advanced Button/Video Tab, customize the Export Settings to look exactly like what you see in the screenshot below: If the screenshot does not present clear enough, please click on it to bring up a clearer view.
Please check out my blog post on Premiere Elements 24p features.

Now with regard to what you seem actually to have....
1. Both cell phones (iPhone 5 and 5S) are probably giving you 1080p with a variable frame rate up to 30 frames per second. Depends often on the lighting during video recording with the device.
a. If you are having problems with this video, then take it into HandBrake before importing it into Premiere Elements 7 in order to change the variable frame rate to a constant one. The MediaInfo video audio properties readout program will give you the minimum, mid range, and maximum frame rate used in recording the video. Go with the mid range reading.
http://handbrake.fr/
MediaInfo | Free software downloads at SourceForge.net
Even the latest Premiere Elements versions can have problems with variable frame rates of cell phones and those other devices that work with a variable frame rate.
b. Let us assume that you have a 1080p with the mid range 24 progressive frames per second used for these cell phone recordings.
Import the 1080p24 with the constant frame rate into Premiere Elements 7 with the project preset cited in example above.
c. Then use the export route that I described in the example above.
If your iPhone videos have frame rates other than 24 progressive frames per second, we can discuss them individually.
Do any of your source videos for these project need rotation. Other topic for discussion. For now, the above principles should apply to your video. Handling of portrait oriented video in a landscape oriented video is other topic for discussion. But, let us see how you work through the above.
Thanks.

• Multipage PDF: Impossible in Photoshop, Horrible Quality in Bridge!

System: Core i7, 12 GB RAM, Velociraptor Boot, 1TB RAID, Win 7 64 bit, Photoshop CS4
I have 8 single page PDFs, 8.5x11", 300 dpi, in both Grayscale and CMYK versions. In the "old days" there was a PDF Presentation capability in Photoshop that worked perfectly to stitch them all together into a single file that can be read sequentially, just like if it was generated in MS Word, etc.. Now I have to go into Bridge and use their Output. The final product is all together, but the quality is ABYSMAL! I can't send this to print as it will look like it was faxed in. I would appreciate the advice of the experts on this forum. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. Here are my answers:
1) Single page file .pdfs are absolutely perfect.
2) Followed instructions on http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Bridge/3.0/WS0DC1130B-6864-46da-B794-71FC8CBB2258.html
3) All settings set to default. I can elaborate with a screenshot of my Bridge screen if you like.
4) Bridge output on left. Photoshop single file output on right. You may want to see it here http://i52.tinypic.com/egu9no.jpg in higher res.
5) All sources from Word .docx to .pdf. Art inserted in Photoshop, and saved in .pdf as Press Quality default.
I hope that helps!

• Why do I get horrible Quality when I export!?!

I recently exported a movie (filmed with my Sony Hdr Fx7) from FCP5 and its very pixelated, especially when theres camera movement. Also at certain parts in the movie the audio does not match the video at all. I exported in all default settings. Whats my problem? HELP

Yeah guys its in quicktime and Kevin Brock, I already had those settings for quicktime like that, the quality is still ****. I took some snaps shots with apple shift 4 but I'm not sure theres any way I could show you guys them on the forum. Right now I'm just trying to get the quality figured out then I'll worry about the audio. Any suggestions?! I definitely think its something in final cut not quicktime

• Premiere Elements 11: DVD Burn horrible quality.

Hello!
I am having issues with getting a decent playback on a video I cut together for a friend.
It involves video shot with some high resolution images inserted in the bottom corners.
When I save as a .mpg file the quality is great, but when I choose burn to DVD with high quality both the video and images are extremely blurry and look to have been made low resolution.
There is only about two minutes of video so available space is not a concern. I've also unchecked "Fit Contents to available space". Is there a fix or work-around for getting a better quality DVD burn?
Edit: After more research I seem to have come across a common problem in that Premiere Elements cannot burn a decent quality DVD without using certain settings that unfortunately can only be played on Blu-ray players. I'm still hopeful that someone, somewhere, has found a way to get it to work with better results than sub-par.

DaVeachi
Problems with the same symptoms can (often do) have different causes. The answers are in the details.
On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements running on?
A just in case note at the onset....DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc has a frame size of 720 x 480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL) whether
DVD-VIDEO standard 4:3 or standard widescreen 16:9. "HD video" can have frame size of 1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080, or 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 which is stretched to 1920 x 1080 for display after encoding.
What are the properties of the source media on that Timeline - video and audio compression, frame size, frame rate, interlaced
or progressive, file extension, pixel aspect ratio?
What is the project's project preset that you or the project is setting? See Edit Menu/Project Settings/General Editing Mode, Timebase,
Frame Size. The program does not always give the "right" setting and defaults to 1080i which may not be a good match for your source.
Then you set the project preset yourself and then import the source.
If interlaced video source, field order may enter into the equation since DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc is characterized by interlaced video, lower field first.
You talk about what sounds like picture in picture. What are the pixel dimensions of these photos that you are using for the picture in picture. How many of them are there in this Timeline?
You are not doing yourself any favors leaving "Fit Content to Available Space" unchecked. More on that later and advise put a check mark for that option. Important...when you are in the burn dialog for your typical project, what does the Quality Area there show for Space Required and Bitrate (with and without a check mark next to "Fit Content to Available Space"?)
What are selecting for your preset standard 4:3 or standard widescreen 16:9 type, and is your program install for NTSC or PAL.
Let us start here and then decide what next.
Thank you.

piff,
You have "_watch in high quality_" link on your YouTube video page. There's a lot of sudden movement and color change in your video which could affect quality upon encode. YouTube is free and you get what you pay for. In all honesty it is not going to get any better than what you presently have uploaded on YouTube. If you want a high(er) quality video on the web encode respectively and host independently.
