Horribly Slow...

I recently upgraded to the latest OS on a two year IMac, and the machine is now virtually unusable.  Makes Microsoft look competent.  This letter to 3.5 minutes to get to this position.  Horrible...  What have I done, or what has Apple done?  Can I go back?
Thanks

Apologies to Apple...it appears it was Carbonite...running amok.  Will look for alternatives.  Thanks to the person who recommended activity monitor.  Just getting used to the iMac.

  • Pacman is horribly slow to sync with Community.

    I've really had this problem ever since I started using Arch and I figured I was just screwing something up so I'm here to find out what.
    So of course I always run rankmirrors after a new install and currently my mirrors are.
    Server = http://archlinux.umflint.edu/$repo/os/x86_64
    Server = http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/linux/d … /os/x86_64
    Server = http://mirror.rit.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/x86_64
    Server = http://mirror.umoss.org/archlinux/$repo/os/x86_64
    And when I run a pacman -Syy (or just Sy) core and extra are almost instant, then it will hang on community for like 10-15 seconds (which seems like forever) and then will finally sync. Nothing else seems to be wrong, downloading packages from community is fast as I would expect. I'm on cable with a download of 1.5 MB/s and and upload of about 60 KB/s. This happens at my friends house, and at my work as well.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    NOTE: This also happens when using yaourt.

    I too have this issue. I have an 8yo PATA HDD and even syncing extra after a longer break is slow. But I run pacman and in the meantime I check email, rss etc. so I'm fine.
    Edit: Here's one way to fix it http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8586
    Yes I know, but if you do a ls -1 | wc -l on extra, you'll see that there are 2441 directories and if you do it on community you'll see that there are only 1930. One would think that it would take a longer to sync extra (which literally takes like 2 seconds) than community.
    I'll try some of the other things listed here (pacman-cage has sparked my interest) and if that doesn't work, using a different file system for /var and see if that helps.

  • Calling EJB in JServer is horribly slow ..

    Hi!
    Beeing somewhat dissatisfied with the stabiblity of OAS I tried porting my application to Apache+JServ+Oracle 8.1.6.
    (Apache 1.3.12, JServ 1.1.2, BD JDK 1.2.2, 8i 8.1.6.1 all on Linux since I didn't want to wreck my OAS environment)
    I found out that I would have to rewrite parts of my EJB:s since 8i makes all beans stateful and forces use of EJB transaction handling if one wants to do any SQL querys. I do a stateless, transactionless design (other that the database manipulations that is) to avoid to much meddling by the container.
    I did a quick but not completely solid fix for it an managed to get everything working in the the new environment only to find that it was horribly slow.
    Calling an EJB method from a servlet takes about two seconds and calling an EJB method from another EJB takes about four seconds.
    all that time spent calling down into the EJB, logging just prior to a call and as the first thing in the method show this quite clearly.
    Something similar is going on when deploying beans to 8i, A small beans takes several minutes to deploy.
    This is on a PIII600 with 256MB of RAM and no apparent swapping going on. No errors of any kind in any logs except for the occasional "soft session limit exceeded" if the Jserver log.
    Anyone got an explanation ? Is it faster on Solaris or ????
    /Ulf

    Leslie,
    If both the applications containing the Client/JSPs and EJBs are deployed in the same OC4J container in different applications you donot have to use RMIInitialContextFactory and you can just use the default Context e.g. as follows as if both EJBs and servlets are in the same application.
    Context ctx = new InitialContext();
    You have to make the EJB application as parent for your appliaction containing web-tier i.e. JSPs as follows in the server.xml
    <application name=EJBApps path=ejb1.ear />
    <application name=WebtierApps path=web1.ear parent=EJBApps />

    Hi All,
    I write a jsp to call a EJB in a different Application deployed in OC4J 9.0.3.
    the source code is:
    <%

    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.evermind.server.rmi.RMIInitialContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, "admin");
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, "manager");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "ormi://mycomputer/employee");
    Context ctx = new InitialContext(env);
    Object obj = ctx.lookup("HelloWorld");
    HelloWorldHome home =(HelloWorldHome)
    javax.rmi.PortableRemoteObject.narrow(obj,HelloWorldHome.class);
    HelloWorld hello = home.create();
    out.println(hello.hello());
    %>
    And the error message:
    java.lang.ClassCastException

         at com.orionserver[Oracle9iAS (9.0.3.0.0) Containers for J2EE].http.OrionHttpJspPage.service(OrionHttpJspPage.java:56)
    But this code, I can run successfully in a Client java class.
    And if I put the jsp and the EJB in a same application, it is ok also.
    What's the problem?

  • Horribly slow printing on Network Printer (PC prints fast)

    Hi,
    I recently configured my lab computer which is HP laserject 4200 series (4320) on macbook pro (snow leopard 10.6.8). I tried configuring it both as a LPD and IPP. However, the printing jobs are horribly slow compared to other PC in the lab on the same network. For a 20 page document, it takes almost 10 minutes to print and the printer window says "Spooling LPR job xx% complete" and takes a long time to finish spooling. I fixed disk permissions, repaired disk, tried resetting printing system by right clicking on list of printers, readded printer couple of times, (offcourse restarted the computer). I can't seem to figure out whats the problem. Can anybody help?
    Thanks

  • Tecra M2 HORRIBLE slow and un-practicable

    Hello; I have an old Tecra M2. Some time ago, probably by a virus, the laptop were running bad. After that it was re-formatted -even at low level-, and from this time, the laptop were allways going very very slow and erratic... Well, after re-installing the DMI, updating BIO, Common Modulles, and checking all the hardware, the laptop still goes horrible slow.... HORRIBLE. It has now 2 Gb RAM -more than before-, and Win 7 -before XP-, but it still goes unpractichable...
    None has known what hell is going with this laptop -as general technical support- and I have not Toshiba technical support in my zone....
    Before any other thing I´d like to ask here for any help to recover this M2 -which I need it as notebook now-
    Any idea?.....

  • Mailbox migration between two Exchange 2013 servers is horribly slow

    Hi,
    when migrating mailbox between 2 exchange 2013 servers,it s horribly slow. I have found some articles which describing problems about content indexing and missing AD group. This is not my problem, I have tried solutions but it didn't work. Both exchange
    are next to each one, same VLAN, same switch. Just migrating between databases.
    When I start batch jobs it is migrating only 1 mailbox at once and speed is really slow (2000 - 3000 mail items per 5 minutes). So mailboxes which have 10GB it's migrating 3 hours. My server is on 1gbps LAN.
    I have also checked MsExchangeMailboxReplication.exe.config on both servers:
        MaxActiveMovesPerSourceMDB="20"
        MaxActiveMovesPerTargetMDB="20"
        MaxActiveMovesPerSourceServer="100"
        MaxActiveMovesPerTargetServer="100"
        MaxTotalRequestsPerMRS="100"
    Do you have any idea where to look why only 1 mailbox is migrating at once?
    Thanks

    Hello,
    For the reason why only 1 mailbox is migrating at once when you start batch jobs, there is no official articles or blog to explain it.
    I recommend you check if the speed is slower when you move a smaller mailbox. If the issue doesn't occur, I recommend you set
    the AllowLargeItems parameter.

  • Creative cloud running horribly slow for my team

    Hi there,
    I just signed my design team up for the CC and everything is running horribly slow. We were on 5.5 and it was running so smoothly. Can you PLEASE help!

    Stevebennn,
    Could you please elaborate the issue? What exactly you mean by "everything is running horribly slow"?
    Which operating system do you have?
    What all Adobe applications did you install and what exactly happens when you try to run them?

  • Safari 4 horribly slow

    This is the opposite of an "upgrade." Safari 4 is loading pages much, much slower than before. Can we go back to the old one? WIll this speed up? Why launch it when it's not ready? Help?

    Maybe a solution - I had same horrible times after downloading Safari 4 2 days ago.
    After a) calling Apple Care - suggesting reloading my harddrive - yecch! and b) trying all solutions posted, I ended up at Apple Genius bar with a very simple solution that solved the problem:
    REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS:
    Directory = APPLICATIONS
    Directory = UTILITIES
    Application = DISK UTILITIES
    <left side of screen> - select your hard drive
    <on right side of screen, towards bottom> select "Repair Disk Permissions"

  • Tiger Updates Have Broken Airport Appleshare File Transfer, Horribly Slow

    Big horrible slowdowns in file transfer over wireless have me pulling my (remaining) hair out. I have seen several other posts and here are results of what I found. Hope you can add some suggestions.
    I had given my Apple Airport base station (b) to my brother in Pakistan after I found a Belkin (g) at Staples for free (after rebates) and have been using it for a while (maybe almost 2 years). Not a pretty box but the price is beautiful and it works OK.
    My real use for it is for my eMac and a couple of older PowerBooks I keep downstaors as a "music studio" for my music and podcast recording (and transferring upstairs to my server folder over wireless) and web browsing.
    All worked OK as I would transfer the files to my PowerBook upstairs (connected Ethernet to a router connected to the wireless router or sometimes directly via Airport connection if laptop was not at my desk). Both configurations worked fine (only limitation being my eMac's (b) speed older Airport speed).
    Since 10.4.4 or 10.4.5 (as that is the last "change" I can see made on my system overall, I have discpovered I cannot even transfer a 3.5 MB file from the 10.4.5 eMac to ANY of the other machines.
    After reading several threads here it seems several people have noticed the HORRIBLE SLOWDOWN if not complete death of Airport usability for file transfer. People are being made to go around changing router settings, channel IDs etc. That sounds like typical tech support bunk to me.
    After all, if the channel ID on the wireless router is a problem why is my web browing going on at normal speed but a 120 MB file transfer just told me it will take 2023642128 hours. No, I am not kidding. That is the time it would take to get man to Mars.
    Someone else was told to hook up the machines over Ethernet. Sure, that works for machines in the same room - and is a bearable temporary solution in that case - but not in an upstairs/downstairs situation. Burning CD-Rs to transfer 120 MB files every time is also not a good way to show off Apple technology.
    So, in my humble opinion, some recent update from Apple just broke something in Airport networking or Appleshare. So, I did some more testing.
    I love Apple, getting friends to switch all the time, but annoyed at these bugs that basically render standard applications unusable. So far I have not been able to figure out what the problem is. Here is some more info I got.
    I already deleted all the network port configurations on the 10.4.5 eMac except wireless. Activity Monitor shows 0.1 to 11 kbps speed (yes, that is 0.1 to 11 Kbps not Mbps). No other apps are running, Tried connecting to different machines. All machines can transfer data at high speed except over Airport/wireless.
    I then fired up a PowerBook G3 500 10.3.9. It is slow as a machine, but it has no problems picking and dropping files on to other machines over Airport (it is sitting in the same area as the emac so signal etc. issues would effect them equally).
    Next I came upstairs and changed my 10.4.5 PowerBook G4, previously working perfectly on Ethernet,to Airport only use. Lo and behold, it could not go to the Internet nor could it do any AppleShare transfers even with a PowerMac G4 which is Ethernet only.
    There could still be two culprits, the Apple 10.4.5 update OR maybe the wireless router went bad. So I tried all of the above after changing channels on the Belkin router. Still no luck.
    It could still be the router, so:
    - I changed the HP 17" 8080 laptop from Ethernet to wireless only and it flies.
    - I switched the PowerBook G4 BACK to Ethernet and it flies.
    - I kept the PC laptop on WIRELESS and did file transfers from it to the now ETHERNET using PowerBook G4 and it works fine even PowerBook to PC and PowerBook to PowerMac both using Ethernet and 10.4.5 works fine too.
    - I now tried to get or put files from the 10.4.5 ETHERNET PowerBook G4 to PowerBook G3 10.3.9 WIRELESS and it worked fine. i.e. no problems with older OS one using wireless.
    - Then I tried 10.4.5 PowerBook G4 Ethernet to eMac wireless 10.4.5 and it would not take or drop a file, unless I was willing to wait for 3 years and 2 months.
    In other words - the ONLY common thread is that 10.4.5 with wireless/Airport use will break Appleshare file transfers.
    Obviously some planetary confluence did not suddenly corrupt all the settings in all my computers at the same as many others, who also happen to be using 10.4.5 or maybe 10.4.4 because the 10.3.9 using OLD PowerBook with 512 MB RAM does wireless file transfers faster than the 10 times faster Macs using Apple's own cards and newest software.
    Seems like a now-becoming-usual Apple update that breaks things.
    Hope you can suggest a solution so I do not have to burn CDs on the eMac for every 1 MB file I need to transfer upstairs.
    Imran

    Mac OS X 10.4.5 (#9): Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater; SIIG FireWire card not working; more
    Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater Over the past few days we've outlined a number of fixes for network slowness that occurs after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5, including entry of a DNS address, toggling of IPv6 and more.
    We've now received notes indicating that a tried and true workaround for various issues -- re-applying the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater (as noted in our general workarounds for 10.4.5) -- can have beneficial effects in this case as well.
    MacFixIt reader Fred Moore writes:
    "After much thrashing about and wasted time, I appear to have solved both the slow web page loading as well as my email sending problems in one stroke. Guess how: download the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater and reapply it. This nonsense has cost me a lot of time but everything seems to work now. IPv6 is set back to Automatic, there is no entry in the Network prefs DNS server field, and my email sending works perfectly (so far; I've sent a bunch of tests). Why didn't I just download the combo updater and apply from my hard drive at the beginning? Well, Software Update should (yes, I know, I know...) work. I'll never again use Software Update for a system update."

  • I have os 10.8.5.  my mail program is horribly slow, though the rest of my functions are all good.  ?solutions

    I have OS X 10.8.5.  All is well, but my mail program is very slow.  It takes way too long to open/close/delete an email.  ??any thoughts on how to fix?

    Quit Mail if it's running. This procedure will have no effect unless you quit Mail when you begin.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    sqlite3 L*/C*/*.mail/*/L*/*/*/C*.db vacuum; sqlite3 L*/M*/*/*/E*ex vacuum
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
    You should see a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appear below what you entered. If not, press return. You can then quit Terminal and relaunch Mail. Test.

  • Windows 7 home premium on 27" core i7 horrible slow!

    I have an imac bought in 2012. It is the 27" version core i7 quad core version with 16GB of RAMM.
    When I run in bootcamp with windows 7 home premium 64bit applications etc, the mac is very slow in performance.
    Even my other PC (core i5) installs for example the same application waaay more faster then my imac.
    The pc has less ram, a slower cpu,...
    I have also noticed in the taskmanager that I have 8 threads, and only 4 of them are used,...
    Anyone who knows a solution?

    What is Windows Experience Index for everything?
    All the Boot Camp 5.0 drivers installed successfully?
    16GB is available?
    Hyper-Threading only helps and works when a process can be broken into threads and the core can as well (HT only adds about 20% but it does add more heat).

  • TableView horizontal and vertical scrolling is horribly slow

    How can I adjust the horizontal and vertical scrolling amount?
    I used the Ensemble example prorgam and streched the column so that the horizontal scroll bar is displayed. I then used the right scroll button which then scrolls extremly slow. I've looked at the javadoc on the tableview and I cannot determine how to set the scrolling amount. I can check if the table is scrolling but I would like to set the amount to be a column width at a time when using the left or right arrow.

    It probably needs to be actually rendered to the Scene graph before the lookups can be made, so the lookups won't work in the initialize method.
    There are a number of reasons I don't like this solution
    - I don't like the string binding
    - the fact that there are scrollbars that are descendant nodes of the table view is not documented, so (at least in theory) a future release of JavaFX could choose not to use the ScrollBar class (for example by creating its own scrolling implementation). This would break the code you have.
    - if you decided to create (or use) an alternative skin for the table view which had other scrollbars in place (again, unlikely but theoretically possible), you'd end up setting the unit and block increments of those scrollbars too. In other words, there's no guarantee these are the actual scrollbars you want.
    So, not ideal but at least if it works you have something...

  • Re: Why is EE connection just so HORRIBLY SLOW. Why cant it just maintain the Or

    I had problem with slow broadband speed.  Took a long time for EE to sort this out.  I went on several websites and discovered that problem may have been caused by me switching off my router each time I used it.  Apparently EE interprets router being switched off as an inability to deal with high speeds and therefore slows the speed down (computers are not my forte so please forgive my lack of technical knowledge here).  Anyway since the speed was restored I have kept my router permanently switched on and now broadband speed is consistently good. I hope this helps.

    : That was an old thread. Have your own!
    As long as you don't switch off router too frequently the exchange kit (not the router) sees no fault. There is no harm switching off every evening.

  • Folder display and full screen horribly slow?

    I'm currently running on Windows 7, 64 bit.
    I just upgraded from PSE 8 to 10 and had the first run automatically convert my catalog in the organizer. I've turned off all auto-analysis options. Other than being extremely annoyed that I no longer have the option to look at multiple folders at once in folder view -- which is something that almost makes me want to return the software, but it was a gift -- it takes over 30 seconds to switch to or start in folder view, and about the same amount of time to bring up the full screen preview.   Within folder view, switching from "3 stars and higher" back to "show all" takes 35 seconds, and even longer to restrict the view.
    I know it's not my machine; limiting the view to 3 stars in thumbnail view takes less than a second, the same with selecting tags, show all, etc.  It's very snappy.
    In a previous version, Elements 6 I think, I had a strange problem where having the printer set to our regular printer caused an issue like this, and the solution was to set the default to CutePDF printer or something like that. I tried that though and it didn't help. (I'll reboot and try again just in case).
    In PSE 8, it's slow...but not this slow. Plus, I can use it for my main view, since I can see many folders at a time. I won't be able to do that anymore so I have to be able to go back and forth easily.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem?? Any thoughts on what could be causing it?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    Inexcusable ? You should perhaps rather wonder how it is possible to select a dozen of photos on multiple criteria within seconds. There is no magic there, only the combination of a powerful tool : a relational database, sqlite, and the recording of data from the exif or from your tags. A complex structure and many indexes make this wonder possible. If the data is outside the database and can change... the wonder is no longer there. You are right in your hope of better structure, better indexes, better use of the organizer of the data included in the database.
    Remember I stated earlier that I don't know of a way to do this in my favourite thumbnail view. I think such a feature would be useful when I am using external drives to transfer catalogs and files via backup and restore. Knowing if all pictures are on given disk or if a part of them is in another one is useful and may lead to different restore strategies. With the folder view, it is akward : you have to create a keyword and to show all subfolders including images  and apply the keyword to all. Believe me, it would be very easy to include a selection of the drive in the find menu, thumbnail view. That's why I cannot blame those who prefer the folder view, the thumbnail view and the find menu are neither satisfying for beginners nor for those accustomed to complex database queries including all operators such as XOR...
    Perhaps inexcusable is a bit of a harsh word.  But I wrote enterprise-level software for 10 years and I know there is a lot going on underneath the hood, and "we should be grateful for what does work" doesn't hold water for me. I still maintain that releasing software when one of the core features became significantly less functional, to the point where it makes that feature unusable, is a very poor choice as far as the existing user base is concerned. (But yes, I also know the pressures that are put on the engineers that are creating the product, and that they are often not the ones that make the decisions about release dates and other things).
    My knowledge of SQL is limited to about 4 sentences, but I do know software. If you have a user task that can happen in less than a second in one view of 30,000 photos and is taking 35 seconds in another view with 30 photos (because no matter what is underneath, what is important is what the user sees, and they took away my ability to see all of them, so "we have to do all this work on the whole tree is a weak excuse at best), that is a major defect, not a design trade-off.
    You wrote, " If the data is outside the database and can change..."  but I still don't see how PSE is reacting to changing data underneath. I changed the data, and it doesn't react at all.  Are you saying that every time I restrict the file view, it checks the entire tree for changes and then doesn't actually act upon them? Also, this doesn't make sense to me, because if I hide many of my files the performance improves significantly -- that tells me it's not about the file structure of things not in my database, but about those in my database.  And if it is the icons that can change, well, the icons are worthless if the view isn't functional.
    Just to be clear for whoever reads this later, I'm not concerned about a one-time cost per session of switching to folder view, though, it would be a lot cleaner if it gave me a progress bar instead of making my OS pop-up "Photoshop Organizer is not responding" boxes. I withdraw my comment about "view full screen" because I can see that there is a workaround, and that was in part user error (though partially also a design choice, since most of the effort of processing my files could be postponed until I was sitting and staring at the first 30, which is how most photo preview software handles it).
    What I am most concerned about is the unusability of folder view for any sort of search or other operations (even stacking three photos in folder view takes *forever*).  How can that not be a defect? Not only that, folder view is buggy -- several times it shows me the wrong photos for a folder (says the folder is A but the pictures are from folder X) and right now, it's telling me I have no zero star photos in any of my directories, when I know I do. Then when I clicked Show All, it's not showing any of my pictures at all.   ("Show all" doesn't seem to work at all in folder view at all).
    If it were a one-time-per-session delay (to account for scanning the file system for changes), but then I could reasonably go back and forth between 2-stars and no-stars and all, stack my photos, rename them, move them from one folder to another, re-arrange all my folders, then that would even be good enough. Take the hit of switching to folder view, and then stay in it for a while. Learn not to go back and forth.   But it doesn't make sense to have a view from which the user cannot perform any tasks on their photos.
    I think I will reclaim the word, "inexcusable" here, sorry     I'll find ways to work around it, though.
    Regarding the feature of selecting all files on a drive...I thought you had said there was a way from folder view to select all the files on a particular drive (i.e, something that it can do that thumbnail view cannot). Did I misunderstand? If that is true, how does one do it?
    I'll end with my previous statement, that I'm available for free beta testing if any of the product engineers would like to work on this issue . I really am a huge fan of the software, which is why I'm so passionate about this topic.
