Horror story...

Just thought I would post this horror story...
I have a MacPro 3,1. I upgraded it to snow leopard last weekend and everything went fine. On reboot I got a window asking for system Events... Rebooted again and it was fine.
I use VMWare Fusion, Mail, Logic 9 and many other apps but those are the primary ones. Everything was great for a week... no problems...
This morning I was asked to do a quick guitar track for a project so I fired up logic 9 and enabled record on my primary interface: apogee duet. I also have a tascam fireone plugged in and I use the jog wheel a lot for audio editing.
As I was monkeying with my guitar cable the firewire cable to the back of the tascam fireone came unplugged. Logic brought up a spinning ball and sat for a few minutes then displayed a dialog saying the Mackie control was not present. I didn't really care so I cleared it. However I was unable to get record to take or playback any audio out of logic. It was like my duet showed audio from the guitar but it was not getting into logic.
I went in and tried resetting the core audio devices but no luck. Ok time for a reboot. I shutdown everything and rebooted. After the MacPro came alive I clicked on logic in the dock and the icon bounced and bounced and bounced.... Eventually it stopped bouncing but no logic window or question about opening prior project.
The force quit list showed it as not responding. I figured ok something strange happened to a plist or something. I went searching but could find nothing wrong. I reset PRAM. Did cold boots... Finally I came to notice that ANY application which has anything to do with audio will not load. iTunes will not load. Quicktime will not load... Even System Preferences will not load.
Safari and mail would load but would periodically hand for long periods of time.
I rebooted numerous times, repaired permissions. I even ran the snow leopard install again. Nothing seemed to work. While loading one audio program that has a progress bar I noticed that it hung while trying to locate core audio. So it seems that somehow this accidental removal of the firewire cable blew away core audio.
I was unable to find a solution to it. Prior to installing snow leopard I had used SuperDuper to create a copy of my primary disk into a disk image. I'm in the process of restoring that image back to the primary drive to see if this is a software or hardware problem.
The sad thing about this is I have quite a few things that I need to deauthorize (iTunes, Melodyne) so that if I have to do a clean install that I can reinstall them. Unfortunately I can't even run the programs so I can deauthorize these things.
I can only hope that the image restore works... If it doesn't then it may be a hardware problem. I do have AppleCare so perhaps that call will be next.
Firewire is supposed to be plug/play. I can't see how removal of a device by accidental unplugging could completely hose a system to the point of having to restore backups and possibly a complete reinstall.
I love Apple hardware, this is what I was hoping I left behind when vacating Windows.
M

The process that seemed to fix this was to reset all controllers, SMC, power management, etc... Then I had to restore my system back to leopard then redo the update to Snow Kitty...
anyway things seem ok at this point.

  • File sharing problems and horror story (nearly)

I use Leopard on a MacBook Pro, a MacBook and a iMac G4 800 MHz (unsupported model).
I have on the iMac and the MacBook Pro many users (the same ont he two machines) and I always use Fast User Switching.
I have had very few problems with Leopard until now; I like it even if there are some glitches or some new features which are not my cup of tea (hierarchical menus missing from the dock, stacks useless when there are many items, FireWall impossibilities (?) to open specific ports, Back to my Mac working on a Lan but not from outside until now, problems with a few apps (Parallels networking erratic), ...
    Now about File Sharing.
Let say my main account is user1 (Administrator), and I have another user2 also administrator, plus user3, user4 standard users.
On the iMac I activate File Sharing.
On the MacBookPro, as user1, if I connect to the iMac Server (using afp://IPaddress_of_theiMac/) I do NOT get the dialog
"Enter your user name and password to access file server YYY
Connect to server as Guest or as Registered User"
but I directly get the dialog
"Select the volumes you want to mount on YYY"
From this, if I select user1 it mounts with full read/write permissions which is normal. It appears that I am connected with my Apple account user1&mac.com (same as mentionned in the Account panel of System Preferences).
On the other hand, if I try to connect to the user2 account, I only get limited access although in the File Sharing Preferences, user1/iMac is mentionned with full Read/Write preferences for the Home Folder of user2.
What is very surprising is that if I log on the MacBook Pro as user2, or user 3 or user4, then connect to the iMac, I first get the dialog to enter a user name and a password. This gives me access with the correct full permissions on user1/iMac or user2/iMac using the corresponding user name/password pair; this is the usual behaviour which is missing when trying to connect from user1/MacBook Pro.
    Now for the Horror Story!
Trying to understand what was going on with the permissions of the user2/iMac account, I logged in to the iMac as user1, went to the Users folder and from there had a look on the informations about user2 home folder. In the lower part of the pannel, Sharing & Permissions says "You have no access" (which is normal) and this is followed by a table where users and permissions are listed. It seems user1 has Read and Write access in contradiction with the preceding phrase...
Anyway, I tried to modify these authorizations for user2 by clicking on the lock of the Information pannel and entering name and password of the administrator. Didn't go farther than that. By mistake, I hit Command-Delete and user2 was GONE from the list AND NOT ONLY from the list in the Information window! Using Fast User Switching and going to user2, nothing left on the Desktop and NO Home anymore.
In the System Preferences/Accounts panel, user2 was still mentionned.
In the Users folder, no user2 folder anymore.
Using once again Fast User Switching, I logged as user2 and got by magic an all new Home. Nothing left in Documents, Library or other user1 folders. Standard settings for icons, dock, etc.
My first move has been to use a very recent backup to restore everything (Thank you Mike Bombich from Copy Cloner!).
Once everything was back to normal, I had a look at the Trash from user1 and guess what, the Home folder of user2 was there, complete.
So now I am left with two questions
why is it I do not have the same dialogs when connecting from all the accounts although as far as I can see, configurations are the same?
why is it possible, from an Information pannel to delete the account of another user?
    Thank you all for comments!

  • Paypal horror story: $7,500 return to scammer lost in mail. What to do next?

It's absolutely a horror story. About three months ago already, I purchased a collectible from a man in the UK for $7,450. When it arrived, I was pretty excited, but then immediately horrified when I saw that he had sent me an absolutely useless item in its place. So, obviously, I immediately took the steps to file a case. I also sent the seller an email. Surprise! No response. [A little later, I also contacted the Northamptonshire police department, who filed a fraud report with Action Fraud on my behalf. Apparently, this same guy had sold this same item 3 other times. A scam running approximately $30,000.] After I escalated the case, PayPal requested that I provide documentation that the item was not as described. I sent in photographs of how the items obviously differed. "Not acceptable evidence." So I had to drive all over the place to find a dealer (there wasn't a local one due to the uncommon nature of the collectible), and then wait for them to draft up a letter--a $30 valuation service. I sent the letter in and finally PayPal allowed me to return the item. Imagine that. I provided documentation that the item I received was worthless, and was required to send it back to the UK for my $7,450 refund. I called PayPal and talked to a representative asking about the best way to ensure I would get my money back and whether or not I would have to insure the item. She assured me that because I provided documentation that the item was valueless, I would not have to insure the item. I went to the post office and sent the package back via registered mail, paying around $30. I updated the case with the proper information on the 9th, and have been checking every single day, awaiting its return. As I was checking, I saw a little note on the claim that said "PayPal will contact you if further information is required by June 17th." I thought this was odd, since that date had already passed (it was around the 20th by then). So I called and was assured that everything would by fine, and that the date would automatically update to around July 7th to be checked for delivery. Today, at 9:37PM, I received an email from PayPal saying that they CLOSED my claim. To me, this seems completely boundless and unreasonable. I called PayPal, unbelievably frustrated and horrified, and was informed that NO MATTER WHAT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING IF THE MAIL COURIER TRUCK WERE TO EXPLODE WITH THE RETURN INSIDE, PayPal could not return my payment unless delivery receipt was confirmed. I have filed an inquiry with USPS to track my registered mail. And now I am writing this, because I am at my wit's end. Please, for the love of God, tell me what I did wrong and what I can fix.

Well, I was advised to not get it insured. I thought at the time maybe I should get a name, but I didn't and it's eating me. It was sent with tracking and via registered mail, though, sorry to confuse you about that. PayPal's terms say a signature is required, but my point is what on earth can I do if I did everything correctly on my end and USPS or Royal Mail just **bleep** up. Am I supposed to fly to the UK and hunt down the package myself if the inquiry doesn't find it? That's basically what I was told in short on the phone the other day. The thing is, I could've insured the package for $7,500, but it wasn't intrinsically valuable. That's why they told me not to insure it. USPS requires proof of value anyway, so it wouldn't make sense. But it would've solved an issue if that happened--of course that jerk in the UK would get a free $7,500. It doesn't seem like 'buyer protection' but some ridiculous technicality from PayPal. Like I said, it's so clear that I was scammed, and I proved that with official documentation from a record store. I had family members around when I opened the package even. The representative told me that this only allowed me the right to send it back. Which is just absurd, because it's no different from a return. I called Royal Mail today and spoke to a guy who said he would direct me to the international department, but it turns out they're closed until Monday. He told me it's likely just stuck somewhere. Best case scenario, it's just delayed and will be delivered soon enough to not worry about the chargeback deadline. I guess I should call PayPal and verify that it's alright to do that. And of course, get a name this time. It just got me thinking, what the **bleep** happens if he signs a fake signature or declines to accept the package. Technically then, PayPal wouldn't receive proper delivery confirmation, even though it's so logical. It just seems like PayPal is sticking to its technicalities instead of helping me. Is there any chance there's a way to talk to someone higher up in the chain of command?

    Hello Smorton15,
It sounds like you purchased a tv show episode and the playback is choppy and bad. I would next try deleteing the episode, and re downloading it from the iTunes store, then see how that plays back.
iTunes 11 for Windows: Download previous purchases from the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12491
Click iTunes Store near the top of the iTunes window.
Click the Purchased link at the right of the iTunes Store homepage (below Quick Links).
In the page that appears, select a category.iTunes shows you which of your purchases are available for download. You can view all of your past purchases, or just the ones not currently in your iTunes library. Items already in your library aren’t available for download. If you select Music, you can view your purchases by song, artist, or album. If you’re viewing by album, click an album to see which songs on it are available for downloading. To search for an item, type its name or a keyword in the search field, and then press the Return key to view your search results.
To download an item, click its Download button .

  • Since this is Halloween, I have a iMac AppleStore/AppleCare horror story...that so far no one even in Apple Corporate Customer Service has been able to address. So who do you call after you've called Apple Corp?

    Oct 21 2013
Hello my experience Apple Service has not been great. Anytime I have had to have something repaired...it has had to go back. Several years ago i had a logic board replaced on a Mac Pro but they forgot to serialize the board... (well?)
Recently I had to take my iMac in (repair # R104249849) The check-in was great after that it was all down hill. I was told by one tech what would be done AND he would call me. I got no call. When I called  to find out what was going on, no one could give me any information...kind of like there was no communication between techs. no one ever called me to come get the iMac so went to the store ( I got tired of trying to getting "no answers" on the phone. It just so happened the iMac had been ready and was "just sitting" in the back running another diagnostic. A week ago the iMac shut down on it's own I got it running again...two days ago one of the fans started running a very LOUD HIGH SPEED yet the computer was not hot.  I wasted almost two hours with Apple Care iChat "typing" my story to only find out that that I would have to call the Apple Store in the morning and re-tell my story again...
When I got a manager on the phone and mentioned I am under some tight deadlines his suggestion was "if it's possible for you to buy a new machine and return it when yours get fixed...(!)" I had a good laugh on that one.
The iMac is there now being there hopefully being repaired.(repair #R10604084)
I got "band aide fix" service when major surgery was needed.
I know computers can cease to function anytime, but I also know that there are two sides to customer service:
    1) Learn to really listen
    2) Do thorough repairs
I have been 100% Apple for over 20 years, does this mean anything to Apple?
    Oct 23
I have spoken to Customer service at Apple Corp. They seem to take this serious.
    Oct 26
I still don't have my computer and after speaking with the tech yesterday morning (who said they would call me before 6:00 PM...I never got a call)
no can tell me when I will get this computer back.
I called Apple Corp Customer service to ask why after all the company "ball dropping" and questionable repair work...simply replace the iMac.
No one there has an answer for this.

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.

  • 11.3 upgrade from 11.2.4MU1 horror story (almost)

This is a story and question. I'll state my question/issue first.
After the 11.2.4SP1, I had to manually copy some files from a temporary server I installed 11.2.4MU1 onto my production box because zman wouldn't run without throwing Java.class errors. When I ran ZDC, it showed a lot of files not present, so that's when I copied the files and everything was A-OK.
I also see issues regarding %ZENworksHOME%\conf files not being accessible even though they are present, and some files in \share\tomcat
This leads me to last night
Last night I started the upgrade, then went to do some other tasks. At some point the server was restarted. I didn't think that was a good sign. Anyway, ZENworks Loader wouldn't start, so I ran the ZDC for 11.3. I see the same issue with \conf and \share\tomcat. This time, some of the \share\tomcat WERE actually missing.
I tried running the install twice more. Same thing. I install 11.3 on a temporary machine, copied \share\tomcat from temporary to new. I fixed permissions on \conf again, and \share\tomcat. I set them to Everyone along with SYSTEM and Administrators. I was missing a bunch of \install\downloads\MSI as well, so copied them from a temporary machine.
I ran through the install one last time. Everything completed without error. Now, everything is up and running, but when running ZDC again, the \conf files are showing as MISSING. Again.
Also, the Audit database is shows several hundred tables missing and the ZEN DATABASE is showing to NC_PruningLog tables errors.
I'm not sure what functionality I'm missing. Clients are updating to 11.3. The ZCC seems intact and Patch Management starting Updating Cache when told.
I'd say the first failed upgrade was caused by something outside of the upgrade, but what is up with all the permissions issues and missing files?

  • Adobe CC - My Accounting Horror Story - Help!

I had signed up with others in my department and was on CC for two months - no problems.  Then in October, for some reason the charge to the credit card for my account didn't go through while everyone else's did.  The department manager called and talked to someone.  They supposedly cleared it up and withing the hour I received the invoice.
Days later, I noticed my CC began giving me expiration notices again.  I called Adobe and had to wait for a call back.  When the call came I told the lady the story and that I had the invoices in front of me to prove that we had paid.
I also mentioned what's odd is that if I sign on though Adobe.com it lists all three invoices.  But if I linked from the 'Countdown' notice using the 'manage account' link it takes me to the Creative Cloud logon.  I log on with the same account info and it shows only through September not my October invoice.  It's like the two sites are not in agreement.
Anyhow, this lady didn't want any of the invoice information and said she escalate it to level 2.  We scheduled a call back for 4pm EST today.
Long story short.  I've been sitting here for a half hour getting angrier by the minute.  No call has come yet and I'm not expecting it will.
Will someone from Adobe please help!?  We paid our invoice, I am in the middle of a huge project,  and I am being forced to spend an inordinate amount of time on the phone or waiting for a call, for something that is essentially an accounting problem on your end.
    Help me!

In kind of the same boat...
Ordered in August, and has been renewing without issue until this morning (my billing date).  Get an email from Adobe saying I'm being put on Free CC because they couldn't renew on my credit card.  Called this morning (Nov 7), waited in queue for an hour only to have someone pickup the line and hang up.  Called back, made a scheduled call-back request. Still nothing. (they are now 2 hours beyond their stated call-back latest time...)
Checked with my bank, no issues/blocks/alerts or anything else on the credit card, and it has been used today for another online transaction without issue.
Not-so-patiently waiting for a call back.
    JD
I have invoices for Aug 6, Sept 6, Oct 6 and Nov 6 but I just clicked into one of the apps and get the "29 days remaining" countdown...

  • Another CPU Upgrade Horror Story

To make a long story short, I'll just reproduce here the letter I already sent to OWC Technical Support, after trying to install a PowerLogix dual 1.2 upgrade. I won't hear from them until tomorrow, so I still don't know if this is a hopeless case or not. Any feedback will be appreciated.
My new processor arrived today, and I proceeded to install it tonight. I noticed
that the plastic border around the BGA strip was broken, and a piece of it was loose,
but I supposed that it would not affect performance. (Now I think maybe I should
have stopped right then and there.)
I had already updated the firmware days ago, so I just installed the processor following
the instructions in the video, pressed down the PRAM button, closed the computer,
plugged it back in, and tried to start it. Nothing. The fans power on, but that's
about it. I finally gave up after a while, and reinstalled my old processor. Still
nothing. I reinstalled the PowerLogix, and tried again. Same thing. For all purposes,
    the computer is completely dead.
eMac, iMac, PowerBook, Power Mac Gigabit (running Tiger, Panther, & 9.2.2)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

All's well that ends well. I finally got a hold of a technician. By lack of experience, as well as the broken BGA frame of the new processor, I had misaligned it during installation, bending several pins on it as well as on the motherboard.
Pins were straightened, mother and daughter cards were properly aligned, and voilà! It works. (I also ran TechTool, just to make sure.)
The moral of the story: Children, do not try this at home. It is not as easy as it sounds, and processors are delicate things --as well as expensive little suckers. If you're extremely confident with your computer skills, do it yourself. But if you have even the shadow of a doubt, have it professionally installed.
I originally posted this looking for help, but now I hope it helps somebody else.
    Peace.

  • My first HP Mini 311 experience. (horror story)

    Service Order number:
    AQB780 - 01
    Well this all started the 20th of April when I purchased a 311 from Ecost.com: http://www.ecost.com/Detail.aspx?edp=55 ... =155441519
I then received it on the 22nd, opened it up from the sealed HP box and upon first firing it up while charging the battery, I discovered it was getting very hot. So I downloaded some temp monitor utilities only to find out that it was hovering around 87c on the CPU!! Then upon doing more research on this very site, I found that there is supposed to be a fan working, and clearly mine did not work at all!
I was so mad! So I contacted Ecost to return it and they tell me: "Dear Valued Customer,
    Thank you for visiting eCOST.com.
We received the request for Return Authorization for the HP Mini 311-1037NR 1.60GHz Intel. Please be advised that we are in strict policy that should you find problems with the HP unit, DOA or defective, you are to contact the Manufacturer (HP) directly."
So I contacted HP and created a support ticket, they shipped me out an overnight fedex box that arrived the next morning, I thought great, this should be quick... I avidly check my Repair Status on HP and they say it will be returned on the 30th of April, only 6 days from when it was received. About 5 days in I notice that my status had not changed, so I called support up and they told me there is a delay on a part and 2 calls later and one request to bump it up to a Case Manager, they update my status to this: "Hewlett-Packard is awaiting the arrival of a part to complete your product repair.
    Expected Delivery Date:05/14/2010"
THREE FRIGGIN WEEKS!?!? So today I finally talk to a Case Manager on the phone after returning her call, Nice lady named Jeanette or Jennifer (I think) tells me that there's nothing they can do in terms of shipping me out another refurb/new unit but she will talk to the service department to try and escalate the repair and let them know it is a high priority repair.
So now I'm sitting here, without my Mini, not even 1 hours worth of use, with 10 more days to go ALSO with the chance of it being delayed yet again...
This is ridiculous, how does HP techs miss the fact that the fan is not even working, what kind of half-assed diagnostics do they do???? And how is a simple 20 minute fan replacement job taking over 3 weeks to fix, all because of a backorder.
I really, really hope this case manager pulls through for me.
HP needs to really get their QC in check.
    /end rant

    *FINAL UPDATE!!*
Just got off the phone with Jennifer my case manager, who did an amazing job. I'm getting a brand new HP Mini 311-1037 spec for spec match as my old one send to me in a few days! It's confirmed, the 2 and a half week wait was worth it.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I have an extra battery as well And a 1gb stick of DDR 1066 to sell (if anyone is interested)
Hp support was a little gruesome on the wait times, but in the end I am a happy satisfied customer. Thanks HP!

  • Syncing Photos and My New iPad3 (A Horror Story)

I really don't know where to begin. Bought a new ipad3 and since all my tunes are on my iPhone, let full the iPad up with photos. What should have been a simple process, as my title suggests has turned into a 5 day ordeal. My issue revolves around two things that make it very hard for me to believe that this product marketed as the new magical must have device, could be beset with such fundamental problems. True it can do a thousand other things flawlessly however like many of my peers here in this forum, I purchased mine specifically for photo storage and viewing and of course this is exactly where the iPad breaks down.
What's even more frustrating is how ignorant Apple Staff (Who ever is answering the phone at their customer support number: 800-275-2273) is to these issues and that the customer has to hunt and search the Internet for solutions that make sense! It's just a shame! Trouble shooting with their experts was nothing more than a waste of time. As I have spent days researching these forums and discovering how many people have major issues with this product, I was simply blown away! The only thing I blame myself for is not reading these forums first. I doubt very seriously, let me stop playing, **** no, there is no way I would have ever brought this new iPad if I know of all these issues. . After paying almost $1,000.00 dollars for one (well iPad plus accessories) for it to have these substantial flaws is unacceptable.
Ok here's Number One. Syncing photos is simply hit or miss. There is no rhyme or reason for why some sync are successful and why others crash. It seems that the best why to make each sync successful is to limit the number of pictures and folders to as few as your patience lets you. If a sync failed  if I reduced the number of pictures and folders it would complete successfully.
What's the big deal you might say, when you have over 100K images that you want to sync to your iPad, its a problem a big one, a major one, so frustrating that you want to take a golf club to it just like Daniel Tosh did on his show TOSH.0. When I spoke with tech support all they seemed to focus on was the amount of photos and adjusting dimensions and resolutions, etc. I will not share here what a said on the phone, but I think most of you know. I am suppose to readjust the size, resolution, and dimensions of 100K plus images to get them on. Absolutely not! I found that answer unacceptable! I have noticed in my reading that some members of this forum have chosen to do that, God bless them.
Some of the syncs fail right away others will only fail after waiting forever with you finger crossed, hoping to move a few more images to the iPad. Sometimes I have to power down/reboot the IPad, iTunes, etc for the next sync to be successful. How much time wasted trying to move my collection to this iPad. I am in the middle of a reboot now. So far after 5 days I have move 18,064 photos to the IPad. Wow you might say but let me tell you at great cost! During this process I completely rest.restored my IPad numerous times, not to mention how many times I rebooted my windows PC. Note worthy, one member of this forum actually wipe his PC's hard drive reinstalled his operating system and iTunes! I don't even want to consider what he might have done next!
Again this is unacceptable that Apple would have a product with these issues and basically leave their customers at their mercy! Hoping that the next release of iTunes may/may not fix the problem. I waiting a while before I wrote this just to make sure that I am not speaking out of anger, merely stating the facts.
Ok here's Number Two, Storage! The iTunes creates a folder called iPod photo cache that just get huge as you increase the number of photo's synced to the iPad. As of right now I have 17,815 photos on the iPad. ( It was suppose to be 18,064 but since the reboot all the numbers have changed. Ridiculous. Any way iTunes has put a monster folder of over 14GB on my ext drive where I store my pics. I personally feel that there should be some other way to sync them to the iPad without creating such a monster cache. The only solution I got from tech support was to reduce the size of each image in my collection. Again I will not share with you what I said on the phone, I will simply say that as a solution was again unacceptable! I personally would not even have the balls to say that to a customer.
If that was the only storage issue I could live with. Drives always seem to get cheaper and bigger. That I do love. The real storage problem is this, syncing a large amount of photos creates other files along with the syncing images that take up huge amounts of space on the iPad as other files! This makes me just want to scream and cut off my finger tips, something. To me this is unbelievable. So let me sum this up like this. In addition to the . 13.7GB my pics take up on my IPad "other" now takes up a whopping 7.7GB. All I have on the IPad is Pics and a few applications. The 7.7GB of other is a result of the synced images and no one seems to be able to tell me want the ____ is up with this.
That's 7.7GB of space that I need for may collection locked up as other files. Does the image need to be stored twice on the iPad? I have now idea. If anyone has an answer Please Help Me! No one at Apple seems to be able. I am open to anything that makes sense. I even place to crashed HD in te freezer over night, and yes it came back online recognized in windows once again.
A third problem that I did even mention is speed! Ipad why you so slow! Why you take so long to sync photos!
I just wanted to share my nightmare with all of you in hope of help. Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have a solution or just want to share please email me at: [email protected]

Ah, it is interesting that this post turned up in my searching to discover how much memory the "New iPad" would require. I can sympathize with the original poster on how photos are (or not) transferred. I learned this lesson from my original purchase of an iPhone 4 upgrade from an iPhone 3. As you may know, the iPhone 4 has a much higher resolution than the iPhone 3. Not thinking, but not being forwarned, I anticipated a growing photo library. I don't recall the exact sizes involved nor am I going to go back and recalculate the sizes, but the result was something like this. I had about 11,000 photos on my iPhone and this required xxGB of storage. The library was mainly photos synced from my iPhoto library on my iMac. When I upgraded, the resolution of the photos was rescaled to the higher resolution. This meant the new library would require about 2.5 times xxGB. End result, return new iPhone and upgrade to one with more memory.
Okay, so if you are paying attention, the photos on my iPhone are reduced resolution images of those on my main computer. I hope you can see that if I were to purchase a New iPad, I need to know how much storage a photo takes on the New iPad. The poster has given some indication with 14GB for 17,000 photos. Because I have used an iPhone for a while, I was aware that iTunes/iPhoto doesn't directly scale and sync the photos directly to the iPhone. I don't know whether that is a good idea or not as the poster is disputing. I could understand there may be an efficiency in having your host computer controlling the scaling of the photos separately from the transfer operation. It would also have been interesting to discover the size of the poster's original photo library that is becoming down ressed to the iPad and the amount of storage of the New iPad.
Certainly the errors sound similar to when I was attempting to sync my new iPhone 4 with my iPhone 3. The problem was basically that I was trying to put more data into the iPhone than it had memory. Because I was doing this as a sync using my old iPhone 3 settings, iTunes failed to know how much storage the new photo library would take (as it does not up res the photos to the new iPhone photo cache first). In that respect, Apple and its support staff could have been more knowledgeable and helpful.
I cannot speak to the original poster's problem specifically, but the originals in my iPhoto library contain 26,000 photos in 229GB of storage, the modified photos contain ?? photos in 59GB of storage. It should not be surprising that I could not place the entire library into any iPad without some down resolution or compression. Yes, I prefer to let iTunes/iPhoto take care of the scaling for me. I do think it would be useful if Apple were to place some kind of guidelines as to the amount of storage one would need for photo libraries. Specifically, that is what led me to this post.

  • Horror story - starting over - hdwe. advice please

    My tale of woe:
I was working at a desk and my early 2008 Macbook Pro inadvertantly touched a metal lamp on the desk, right at the left edge of the lid/display. A HUGE spark issued forth and the MBP shut down. Attempts to restart it yielded only a glowing pilot light, no startup chime, no HD spinning sounds. Being a few months out of AppleCare, I took it to an Apple Service place and they said that it would cost between $1200 - $1400 to fix without going into specifics. Their plan was just to start replacing parts, starting with the main logic board. Their repair estimate was about twice what the machine is (was) worth, so I went out and bought a near identical one, which I'm using now, and it's fine.
I do not know why this huge spark would have happened - this was bigger than any static electricity spark. It actually "burned" (melted?) the case where it touched the lamp. The lamp was perhaps wired with reverse polarity? Anyway, it is scary to think that the metal cases on these MBP's is so vulnerable to this kind of damage and I know from experience that it's probably no better than a 50/50 chance that a lamp will have been wired for correct polarity. This could have happened to anyone. If it had been plastic, nothing would have happened.
    My questions:
So, now, I'm trying to get rebuilt and back on my feet and back in action with the 'new' replacement MBP.
Since I had not done regular back-ups, I'm wondering what is the best way to retrieve data from the old HD (I don't know if it was fried or not, but I would at least like to try to salvage some things from it.) I have a Time Machine back up from a month or so ago, it won't be the end of the world if I can't salvage anything from the burnt MBP HD, but I would like to try as I know there is newer data I'd like to salvage. My bad for not running backups more often.
    1. Should I take the HD out of the burnt MBP and put it in a portable enclosure? if so, I need recommendations on selecting one, if anyone can advise. If I do pop it in an enclosure, am I at risk of losing data simply by moving it an outside enclosure? I once took a 3.5" IDE HD full of data out of an older Mac and put it in an external case and it completely messed up the catalogue and tree and I was never able to get all of the data off of it, was not able to go back, the cheap-o case somehow would only see it as a 120 GB drive when it was actually a 180 GB). If someone would be so kind, I need specific, detailed advice on putting this drive from the MBP into something that will allow me to read whatever data that is still on it.
    2. Should I take the old drive out and try to install it in this 'new' MBP so that I could back it up to an external drive, run one more Time Machine backup? or am I risking anything? if the drive was damaged or ruined by that electrical spark, am I at risk of damaging the 'new' MBP by putting it in. They are the exact same generation of machines.
    3. Another question, I authorized this new MBP with iTunes Store, but how do I de-authorize the old one, now that it's never going to work again?
Sorry if this is too many disparate questions - please excuse me. I'm in crisis mode here, trying to get back to a functioning state.

    Hey tjk,
Do either of these sound like the right enclosures for my drive? They're for IDE but my System Profiler lists the drive as a Serial ATA? I should know the difference, but I don't.

The other enclosures are mostly for SATA drives, which I don't think I have in this MBP, do I? (early 2008)
IDE or ATA is the older version. MBPs use SATA (Serial ATA). The enclosures you linked will not work.

  • Mavericks 10.9.3 and Gmail horror story!

    I am completely FRUSTRATED!
One week this has been happening. My Gmail is not loading on my iMac, iPhone and iPad.
Spent days with level 2-tier tech support.
As an experiment, I created a brand new gmail. Tested it out on all 3 - and POOF! it worked ine a flash!
I went back and put my original gmail address in and nothing but TROUBLE!
    What is going on here?
Apple said to call "google" and that my gmail account is not working right.
Why would one email address be totally fine, and not another?
FYI: I tried my gmail on my girlfriends iPhone and it did NOT go through. I tried her gmail on MY iphone and it worked!
    Help???

I think you should pick a thread & start going through the suggestions, making a note of what you try to avoid repeating yourself.
Anecdotally I have Gmail setup on 10.9 & iOS 7, so it can work.
Create a new user account to the Mac (in System Preferences> Users & Groups), setup Mail in that account and see if it works. Personally I have 'All Mail' hidden in IMAP, Gmail behaves fine, messages do not duplicate on iOS or OSX Mail.
P.S. I'd also suggest that you avoid handing out the new email if possible, set the old account to forward into it in Gmails control panel. You can read your mail on iOS that way. Just remember you will need to reply from the web interface otherwise the from address will be the new account.
Sorry this is a lousy workaround, but if gmail suddenly starts to work you can dump the new account if no-one has the address.
