Hosed?

My nano was working perfectly yesterday. Today I plugged it into my Mac as I do every morning, and it wouldn't work--screen was stuck on "Do not disconnect" with the backlighting on. The nano would not show up either on the desktop or in iTunes. So I did a restart (toggle Hold switch, hold 'select' and 'menu' until unit restarts) and it restarted but instantly showed me the folder/exclamation point with the URL to apple.com/support/ipod.
Downloaded the updater software, tried to run it, doesn't work: Pressing 'Update' crashes the program (it just quits with no error message); pressing 'Restore' results in the message, "An error occurred while updating or restoring iPod."
Went into Disk Utility, tried to Erase the nano in disk mode. This results in the message, "Disk erase failed with the error: Input/output error"
Please help.

  • USB disk access of every type is hosed - HELP!?

Newbie with the very latest "Don't Panic" running on a laptop.  I'm coming off a year with various bloateddistros, looking for something fast and stable.
I've got my internal drive up, networking, x, gnome and openoffice all working great.  Next step is to plug in my external 160gig drive with all my data on it.  This is a very standard USB2-to-EIDE drive, I've had no problems with it in any distro.  It's split between a 32gig FAT32 partition and a 119gig Ext3.
I followed the wiki on autofs.  Nothing.  Then played with HAL and the like.  Made my user a member of group "storage".  Still nothing.
I've seen mount problems before of course, so I tried adding gparted via pacman and running that from a root command line just to see what's physically out there.  Not good: gparted never finishes getting past the "Scanning all devices....." process with the blue bar bouncing back and forth.  When gparted first starts I can hear the external disk spin up and chug for a few seconds, but then nothing.
I tried a 1gig USB flash critter (probably Fat32), nothing there either.  I think something is fundamentally hosed in my USB disk support.  I do have a USB external trackball working though...so my ports are up.
    My daemons at present:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond ntpd hal cups gdm alunnd)
    Heeeelp!  Neeeed my daaaata!
Wait, something else weird: if I turn on the external disk I see some CPU activity on my gnome panel monitor.  Nothing major, a few light spikes.  I've got a Celeron 1.6 but with the new 533 memory bus and 2gigs RAM.  Once I run gparted it goes bananas and then once I close gparted CPU activity is pegged hard at 100% - yet there's no listed process eating that.  Then when I turn off the external drive, CPU activity falls back to normal.
    WTF, over?
    Jim

Well before reading Veek's post I got further along.  Almost there I think.
I went and loaded XFCE4 plus extras, and logged in with a XFCE session.  I like having a backup desktop environment anyways in case Gnome gets squirrelly.
In XFCE Thunar shows the disks, but when I try and access 'em I get:
    Failed to mount "128G Volume".
    (exo-mount:4613): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
        Using the fallback 'C' locale.
You are not privileged to mount the volume "128G Volume".
What I can't figure out is, what permissions?  I'm added to groups "storage" and "disks"...any more needed?
    The output from fdisk -l:

  • I hosed my fs...and don't know how to fix it

When I started up my box the other day, I got the message that the filesystem had been mounted x times without checking, and that I could manually check it or hit ctrl-D to reboot normally.  I've had this before so I just hit ctrl-D and now all hell has broken loose.  During bootup now, when trying to mount the fs, I get a long string of "Unrecoverable Error" and am unable to go further.
So I pop in my 0.4 install/rescue CD to try and run fsck or something to get back into my system, but have never done that before and have no clue. Is there something I have to pass at the boot: prompt? If I don't, then I cannot access my system, can't run fsck and can't do much of anything. I'd rather not just do a reinstall, as I'd like to try and fix this first.  I've tried to do some searching, but haven't found anything except how to run fsck, which doesn't help because I can't even get to that step yet.  My only net access now is at work, which is monitored so I can't spend a long time searching...if someone could just point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it
    Thanks in advance
[EDIT]:  Well, nothing like finding the answer 30 seconds after you post a request for help  .  Maybe someone can just confirm this for me.  At the boot: prompt when I bootup to the CD, I can just pass "init=/bin/bash" and will be able to access my filesystem?  Or do i need to pass something like "root=/location/of/root/partition".  Those are both things i found. Anyway, I'll take 10 lashes for finding the answer after I post for help

well it seems that I completely hosed everything, plus I actually want to try out the 0.5 new installer, etc., so I'm just going to reinstall and pay more attention this time ...thanks for all the help and advice

  • Phone get hosed trying to update OS

    Tour 9630 - Sprint  version
3 times now I have attempted to update to 4.7.1 and 3 times the device got hosed. Luckily, I have the restore procedure down pat now. Each time it hangs at the JVM part and it says the device is no longer connected. Then you get the white screen of death with the 507 - No OS error. To restore, I delete vendor.xml and run loader.exe with the /nojvm switch.
Can anybody tell me what the deal is? I have the latest version of Desktop Manager. This seems like a rather nasty bug/defect.
In case anybody needs to know to help me, I run Win XP SP3 and BB Desktop Manager 5.0.1.18.  Phone version is 4.4.1.40 (platform 4.1.0.40). Branding version 1.0.101.242.  BB system software 4.7.0.
I just won't update my OS, I guess. Phone has been wiped clean and a fresh install done, then the upgrade was attempted, so no software is interfering.  This is obviously a BB issue on the software or hardware side. I have seen other posts about this issue, but no answers yet.
Again, just very disappointing that I can't trust my phone to update without losing everything. I backup and restore after re-installing the OS, but then I need to download everything again and its a major PITA. Would love some answers.
    OS v5.0.0.484

Ok. Do you remember what you were updating? Like Itunes or a security update. And did you let it complete and install? To install the update, it usually asks for your password and sometime asks you to restart. Here are some options to try.  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

  • ITunes 5 upgrade hosed a lot of audio files

Upgrading to iTunes 5 hosed quite a few files that were working in iTunes 4. Almost all the Griffin radio id's got hosed and a lot of music as well--maybe 1-2% or less but that's still a lot. All these files still exist on my iPod--is there any way to return them to my iTunes 5 library?

doh!!!! ok--I just got it--thanks--I'll check it out.--just tried to download the app but there seems to be a problem with their server--so far the download dialog is showing 7+ hours for downloading a 3.2 mb file and yes I'm on dsl. Thanks anyway--Willy

  • Pretty much confirmed interactivity between Word/Acrobat Mac vs. Same on PC is completely hosed in certain situations...Please tell me I am wrong!

I've pretty much confirmed that the interactivity between Word/Acrobat Mac vs. Word/Acrobat PC is completely hosed in certain situations...Please tell me I am wrong!
Situation: two workgroups need to work with each other sharing and editing word and pdf files for complex documents containing a TOC, list of figures, etc.
Problems reproducible on many machine types and configs:
    1. WORD FILES: TOCs do not retain hot links within a doc that has been touched by a mac, and then re-saved as a PDF with the intent to have a linked TOC with chapter heads.
    2. PDF FILES: that have been touched by a mac, for example to edit the document properties, will loose all TOC function as in problem #1 above.
In short, this rots for mac users who have to share/edit these files with PC brethren.
The only solution that I found for mac users is this:
Do your thing in Word 2008. Then have a PC version of Word and PC version of acrobat installed on a virtual drive like Parallels or VMWare, etc. Delete your TOC using MS Word for Windows, reinsert a new one, and then use the PC distiller installed into word by Acrobat Professional to create a new PDF that will be cross-platform functional.
I had a meeting with the Mac users to explain this work around and they looked at me like I was crazy, and they pretty much said go pound sand, we don't care if the TOCs are linked or not.
Well, I may be exaggerating there a bit, but NO ONE was happy with this solution, including myself. Our BIG question is "Is anyone going to fix this problem in the shortterm?!?" And it's Microsoft and Adobe both that seem to have some responsibility here...with an emphasis on Adobe, as it's clearly not just an MS isssue, as you can totally destroy a working TOC in a PDF file by just editing the file properties on a mac. Arg...
I also find it frustrating that Adobe does not have a forum for cross-platform specific issues, which to me seems consipiritory. Ha!

  • IPad 2 hosed after trying to load 5

JUst tried loading 5 on iPad. It said I had to restore, Idid that and now its hosed. iTunes won't see it and the iPad itself is stuck on the apple screen. Anyone have a clue how to get this working?

The exact same thing is happening to my iPad 2.  It is basically bricked.  My computer won't recognize it when I plug it in now and just contantly stays on the screen with the Apple logo or a spinning wheel like it it trying to load.  I've done hard resets by holding down power and home button dozens of times and it just goes right back to same screen.  Before it stop being recognized, it kept saying "need to restore iPad" and I would, and it would get half way through before saying "error connecting to Apple iPad restore server" and then get the same loop over and over.  I can't even turn it off.  Any suggestions?

Right click/CTRL-click the mov file and tell it to play in Quicktime vs. iTunes. That's all you have to do.
In iTunes if you CTRL/right click on the file and tell it to show file , the finder will open to where iTunes has put the mov file and you can copy it to the desktop so you can see it there or to movies etc., in your home folder.

  • ITunes hosed my ipad during iOS upgrade

I just tried via my rather old winXP box to upgrade my ipad to the latest iOS, and it errored (first with 1602, then 1604 on subsequent attempts), requiring a restore. It turns out that if your machine has USB 1.1 ports and is not modern enough to have USB 2.0, bad things happen. What I don't get is that this is is the same machine iUsed to set up my ipad when I got it and to sync my ipad every time I've sunk it.
Net result: my ipad is hosed and I need to copy my itunes library to a different machine so that I can try to do the restore from there (will that work? anybody know?). It has already been reset to factory settings.
It seems to me that itunes itself should do a little homework before it merrily goes on it's way hosing things and check the USB ports for compatibility before trying to do an OS upgrade, no?
Needless to say this is getting my week of to a bang up start, since my whole life is in that thing and it is indispensible to my work, church, and writing.

    Thanks Carolyn!
(Ah, the old "hide the answer in the manual" trick eh... Very sneaky)
It would be great if there was some test loop of one or two round trips before it actually starts updating anything just to check that the communication line is stable, and give the user some warning if it looks like things may go awry.
In fact, when I first set up my ipad it would have been really swell if a message popped up that said, "We detected that you are connecting via a USB 1.0 port or that the port you are using may be slow or unreliable for some other unknown reason. This is not recommended and may affect your ability to sync properly. Do you want to proceed?"  ("Yes", "No, I will sync from another computer.").
I do see one enhanced port listed in my device manager so it could be that I was connected via USB 2.0 and that there is some other problem with my old hardware.
Either way all roads are beckoning me toward the hardware store...

  • Phone hosed after trying to update to 1.1.2

it errored out during the install and now the phone is hosed showing a sync cable icon with an arrow pointing to an iTunes icon. I can't get out of that screen.
    Any suggestions?

Hmmm, now that I think about it I pulled my phone out of the cradle (equivalent to unplugging the usb cable) and then restarting iTunes resolved the problem for me. I didn't have to do a restore. The previous updates went smoothly for me so I wouldn't panic and assume since you had a problem this time that your experience of 1 constitutes what you can typically expect.
Anyway, how difficult is it really to click the synch button to re-synch your phone...

  • How to get rid of extra browser support files without hosing the web help

I produce web help for a a web app that is restricted to IE.
When I generate web help, RH spits out dozens of files that support
help within other browsers. We tried deleting these "extra" files,
but it hosed the help. Does anyone know of a way to either 1)
generate without these files or 2) remove the files without
    breaking web help?

    Welcome to our community, Karen
If you took them out and it hosed the help, it would seem
they are actually serving *SOME* function, no?
I'd simply ignore things and just accept the fact that you
get a lot of files with WebHelp.
    Cheers... Rick

  • I change my shortname and now I'm hosed?

Hi all, I'm new to the mac so go gently on me. I used "sudo niutil -createprop . /users/$USER name newname" to change my shortname (where newname was actually the name I wanted to change to).
Now after researching some more Apple does not recommend this but to make a new user and copy over you folders. I can use my password to install apps, but i cannot us "su" or "sudo" or have access to "system.preferences.accounts" right.
Have I hosed my machine or is there anyway to get things fixed?
    Thanks for your time
    -Pyong

Use the instructions in this FAQ to add your current short name to the admin group. Allan Sampson's link works when someone has changed their home folder name, not short name; these are different properties, and can be changed independently.
If you will be changing the short name of an admin user, you must change the membership of the admin group as well.

  • Am I totally hosed?

Yesterday I was running carbon copy cloner to back up my hard drive to my firewire. I keep the firewire drive bootable in case the worst happens.
Apparently it did. The system totally locked up (normal back-up takes less than an hour and after four hours it was still struggling and making no progress) and had to do a hard reboot. When the sytem came back up OS X wouldn't start. Just a black screen and occasion disk I/O error messages.
Restarted again holding down the option key. Booted off the firewire drive and the back-up had finished for my son's account but not my account. I ran the TechTools program that came with AppleCare and updated it to the most current version. Then I checked the internal drive TT showed errors and wanted to repair. I held off repairing and manually moved over the handful of iTunes purchases that hadn't backed-up to the firewire drive. Then logged out and restarted using the OS X install disk to run the hardware diagnostic. It confirmed errors on the internal drive.
I booted again off the firewire drive, pulled some missing photos off the internal drive but iPhoto said four of them were unreadable, moved over my mail mailboxes that hadn't been updated and ran TT again and again it found errors and wanted to do some pretty nasty repairs that would reduce the size of the drive. I went ahead and ran it figuring that if that worked I could try reformatting the internal drive and if it passed verification I could just clone the external drive over and keep on going.
So I gave it permission and nothing seemed to happen. So I went on the net to check for similar problems and suddenly the screen grayed out and in the gray out a dark but transparent box appeared and said I had to power down immediately by using the power button. So I complied.
Now when I try to boot off the external drive it takes a loooong time to get the blue bar to go all the way across to start OS X once it gets there the box doesn't close but the log-in box pops up and does not have any users. I enter my username and password and the lollipop spins then the box shakes. I've tried logging in as other users and still same story.
So I booted off the OS X install disk again and ran disk utility. Shows the external drive is fine but needs to repair permissions. I let it repair a bundle of them. Start again and same long attempt to start OS X, same lack of user information, same failure to recognize users and passwords.
After running the repair with techtools, the system no longer believes the internal drive exists.
Boot again off the install disk and try to reset passwords and it shows no users at all on the external drive.
Obviously the internal drive is hosed. Don't have the error code in front of me but had looked it up and basically the answer was it is dead.
Have I lost my back-up as well? Any ideas why all this going on?

    Finally resolved the problem.
The internal drive crashed during the cloning process. Apparently that corrupted the user information files.
I did an archive and install without saving user information to get running again and boot off the external drive.
I'm still dragging stuff up out of the "Previous System" folders but I'm running and will hopefully go get my new internal drive installed this weekend.

  • Fluid layout suddenly hosed in DW - but renders fine in browser

Even though I'd seen some warnings about making changes to margains when using fluid layouts, I was trying to center an image in a div and changed the margain. Suddenly, the 'desktop' layout for the page wouldn't display correctly in the Design tab. I thought I'd hosed the entire page, but I tried viewing it in Firefox - and it works perfectly.
In the Design view, when showing the 'desktop' view, it only shows the header and first div as being within the fluid grid. I figured that meant I'd entered some errant character either in the CSS about that point or the source code. No joy in either location.
Also, I can visually edit the sizes of the divs (which all show as fluid in 'tablet' and 'mobile' sizes) in the two smaller sizes, but not in the 'desktop' view. Even the two divs that show as fluid cannot be resized in the desktop view - though they are selectable and show the sizing handles.
Is the feature so new that it's this buggy? Or am I missing something else?
Also - how much should boilerplate.css change? Should mods be made to this file?
I'm NOT an expert in DW, CSS or HTML, so I'd be perfectly willing to accept I've done something wrong.

It's called me being an idiot. I removed a bracket from the end of the tablet size mediaquery in my main stylesheet.

  • Have I totally hosed my macbook

    Hey guys,
So I understand the kinds of things that I was doing were risky, and I take complete responsibility for this macbook being hosed.
However, I can't imagine why I should not be able to get this guy working again.
    Here is the story:
    1. 10.4.6 running fine on macbook (intel)
    2. I decide windows might be nice too..
    3. Use bootcamp, install windows, no problem.
    4. Reformat entire system, not it's just osx again
    5. I decide I want to have two OSX partitions, in order to make experiments on one side and just hang out on the other.
    6. While using bootcamp to create another partition, bad things happen. (no detail needs, just keep reading)
    7. Now my goal is to get just one version of OSX to work on the macbook.
    8. I can not get the OSX disc to boot from the cd drive.
    9. Windows installer disc, and Ubuntu installer disc work just fine.
    10. Now I have Ubuntu installed on the macbook. No matter what I do I can not get the OSX disc I have to boot from the Macbook.
    I've tried:
    1. Holding down c at startup
    2. Holding down c at startup
    3. deleting the PRAM by key combo and having the mac chime 4 times
4a. Booting the Mac into external firewire mode (holding down "T" button)
4b. Reformating the entire macbook drive (using all the difrent patition schemes)
    5. Having a really long hard stare at it
    6. Holding down the c at startup
    7. Holding down the c at startup really hard!
    8. I think that's it.
So, I've got a awesome macbook that runs ubuntu really well. But I love osx.
    Help?

does your HD read disk 1 when inserted in your internal drive? Does it spin up then spin down but not read. If this happens try using an external usb drive. Boot up and hold down option key and boot from external drive. My disk 1 cannot be read from my internal drive but boots fine from external usb drive. My internal reads disk 2 fine. Go figure.

  • Trying to add a lightbox slideshow caption link to a url hosed my site.

In the lightbox slideshow caption I tried to add an html link to the url of the image and now the all the slide show are hosed. It didn't link from the caption text but was embedded into the sllde show so that all the thumbnails linked to the same url.I even created a new slideshow from scratch and it still linked to the url. Do I have to rebuild the whole site? How and where do look to find the hyperlink to remove it?

Please try to select the caption and remove the link from hyperlink dropdown in top bar menu in Muse.
If this is not the case , post screenshots from design view.
