Host not showing up in ARP table

Hi,
I am having an interesting/weird problem with one of my Catalyst 6509 switches.
The setup is as follows:
HostA - Switch1 - Switch2 - HostB
There is routing in place for HostA to reach HostB and vica versa.
I am testing this using ICMP. There is nothing blocking ICMP traffic on any of the devices.
Problem in question: I can only ping HostB from HostA (or Switch1) if HostB is found in the ARP table of Switch2. Pretty normal you might say since we need Switch2 to route/switch the packet to HostB and that will of course only happen if the ARP table is populated.
But what happens is the following:
I ping from HostA to HostB. It fails. I check Switch2 and I see that HostB is nowhere to be found in its ARP table.
Next I ping HostB from Switch2 (5 packets). First packet fails, last 4 I get a reply. I check and see that now HostB is to be found in the ARP table of Switch2.
Now I ping HostB from HostA and it works fine.
This behaviour is happening for all hosts in the subnet (VLAN) of HostB. I cannot reach them until I ping them from Switch2, after which they're in the ARP table and everything works.
Maybe it something different than the ARP table not being populated all together, but that is for now all I noticed. Does this problem ring a bell with anyone. And is there a fix?
It looks to me like Switch2 is malfunctioning, although I have no idea what is. Furthermore this apears to be working ok for a lot (read: all) of the other VLANS on Switch2.
Anyway. I'd love some help in troubleshooting this one.
kind regards,
Kevin

This goes back to the way switches (or bridges) work. They have to see a frame from an end device to know its MAC address and once they see it they add an entry in their CAM (or MAC) table. The entry basically tells the switch that a specific MAC is reachable via a particular port and this is meant to prevent subsequent flooding of unicast frames. In short an end device needs to send at least one frame for the switch to 'see' it. Another point to remember is that each entry in the CAM table has an age associated with it and if a switch does not see subsequent frames from that host it will age out the entry and start flooding all frames destined to this MAC address until it is learnt again (and learning is done only when the owner of the MAC starts to communicate again).
Kevin,
Can you please explain your topology in a bit more detail? I am looking for information like what is the default gateway of each VLAN, how are the VLANs spread across the two switches, any HSRP configurations and if yes who is the active for what VLAN, routing between switches, etc. This will help us troubleshoot the problem in a more effective manner.

  • SX20 Is showing up in ARP table but not reachable

    Hello,
    I'm currently working on an issue at a customer site where two of the video endpoints (both SX20s, one running TC7.3 and one running TC7.2) will work in some switch ports and not work in others.  The switches that they are connected to are both 3560s running the same ios version and with the same switchport/vlan configuration.  Both switches are connected to a Nexus 5k and this is then connected to our router (2821).  The switches are managed by the local site IT while I manage the router.  All IP's are statically assigned.
    On the router I can see the endpoint's MAC address and it shows up in the ARP table correctly but it is not pingable.  Our other video systems that are not SX20's work properly when connected to these ports (Tandberg 990MXP, C20 and C40).  When we replace the codec with a PC with the same IP/MASK/GW configuration it is pingable.  This leads me to believe it's not a networking issue but is an issue with the endpoints themselves.  However, they do work properly when they are connected to other ports that have the same configuration.
    Has anyone else run into similar issues?

    So you are saying for it to do what i want: shared photo stream to appear in web then i need to upgrade.
    Yes
    Does that mean i purchase the new software an it's not just an update?
    Yes
    Your profile indicates your running 10.7.5.  For shared Photo Streams you need to be running 10.8.2 or later: The following is from  iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
    What do I need to use Photo Stream?
    To use Photo Stream, including Shared Photo Streams, you need an iCloud account, compatible devices, and up-to-date software:  iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6.0 or later Mac with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 or later and iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later
    So you'll need to upgrade to Mt. Lion.

  • Why available Lan Host not showing up in the DHCP Leased Client table for RV180

    I just purchased the RV180 and am puzzled as to why lan host with ip address of 192.168.1.102 not showing up in the DHCP leased clients list.
    I have 4 static ip addresses with the last 3 digits ending in 101, 102,103 and 200 listed in the static DHCP and available local network list, but 102 is not in the DHCP leased clients list. The other 3: 101,103 and 200 are.
    Should it not be there also?

    Thanks Marty,
    There is nothing different about 102 than the other hosts.
    I did talk to tech support at Cisco this morning and I was told that I should not use the static DHCP under Networking LAN. Instead, I should set the static IP at the device level.
    So under Static DHCP, the list is blank, but the IP address will show up under Available LAN Hosts and listed as Static as Type.
    I thought this is a bit strange since it is Static DHCP and should be under Static DHCP (?)

  • Gratuitous ARPs do not populate the router ARP Table

    Hello,
    In order to debug an ARP problem in a Firewall cluster environment, I connected a one-armed router on the public VLAN of the firewall cluster, in order to observe the ARP cache behaviour during a switchover. I configured a loopback interface on this router and  a default route to this loopback interface to simulate a real router.
    When a switchover occurs between firewall cluster members, the active member sends Gratuitous ARPs for all NATed IP addresses. In my environment, I have 110 NATed addresses configured on the firewall.
    By launching a "debug arp" on the one armed router,  I clearly see all 110 gratuitous ARPs arriving on the router, but the ARP cache of the router is NOT populated with the 110 entries...
    Note  : The command is configured on the one armed router :
    Router(config)# ip arp gratuitous local
    What can be the problem ? Is there any condition for a router to accept Gratuitous ARPs ?
    Thank you for any help
    Yves

    Hi
    Gratuitous arp is used when a host wants to inform the switch that the mac-address has changed eg.
    You have a cluster which has redundant connections and an IP to mac-address mapping. If the active NIC fails the IP address is moved across to the standby NIC but the standby NIC has a different mac-address. So the cluster sends out a gratuitous arp which informs the switch of the new IP to mac-address mapping.
    The reason you might not want to allow gratuitous arp is that you might not want your switch updating it's arp table based on annoucements from devices on the LAN as you could very easily spoof mac-addresses and corrupt the arp cache.

    Hello,
    The core switch has got a static default route pointing to 10.192.61.1. It has got a better AD value than the EIGRP routes.
    Even if you are redistributing the BGP routes into EIGRP, EIGRP default route will not make it to the routing table because of the higher AD value than the static route.
    However, you can view that it the EIGRP topology table. Check 'Sh ip ei topo'.

  • Power Pivot Slicer options not showing in the Pivot Table Field list

    Excel 2013. In all the tutorials I watch when you create a Pivot Table using Power Pivot there are Slicer options in the
    Pivot Table Fields list.  Slicer Horizontal, Slicer Vertical These do not show for me.   I see Filters, Value, Row, Column only.   Is there a setting I need to turn on?   When I click on PowerPivot
    at the top, the first icon on the bar is Manage Data model, not Powerpivot as I have seen on some of the youtube tutorials.   Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for trying but it's not what I am after.  I understand how to use Slicers with pivot tables.   My question relates to Pivot Tables created using PowerPivot.   Directly under the Pivot Fields list on the right is a section where
    you choose what you want to pivot  i.e  Filters, Values, Rows, Columns.   These are standard with any pivot table.  When I watch videos on PowerPivot there are 2 additional options in the section.  Slicer Vertical, Slicers Horizontal.
     The video comments  they only show in when creating a pivot table using PowerPivot.  These 2 options are not there for me.  I don't know why. It maybe the version of office I am using which is Microsoft Office Plus 2013. I'd like them
    included.  Appreciate you taking the time to help.

    Hi Rob,
    Thanks for the response.
    I checked and the Trace Styles tab does not show the cell having "display:table-cell" style.
    This web application uses a standard css to define styles for a <td> tag as such:
    td {font-family: Arial; font-size: 8pt;}
    if I add the style you have mentioned as such
    td {font-family: Arial; font-size: 8pt; display:table-cell;}
    It still does not show up when I select the <td> cell and check the "Trace Styles" tab.
    Am I using the "display:table-cell" incorrectly? Where else should I specify it?
    The HTML for the whole web page is huge so I am including just the HTML of the affected part of the page:

    Its always the <td> tags with the numeric data in them that disappear.
    Please let me know if I should declare the style for every <td> tag? I was under the impression that this style was only relevant for displaying tabular data within <div> tags.
    Besides this, is there anything else I can do to mitigate this issue? It is quickly escalating with our customers.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • Specific Model not showing rows in a table in a column of a table

    Hello,
    Fairly simple issue here (I think):
    I have a table bound to a global model and its rows bound to "/items"
    I then have a column within that table which has a valuehelpfield that pops open a dialog with a table.
    This tables rows inside the dialog are bound to a temp model. Now I know this temp model has the correct data and format and I do not get a "no data" messages when I bind it's rows to the node on the temp model, and to double check that I tried binding it to an incorrect node and it did say "no data" and I tripple checked by getting the jsonstring of the model and it's exactly how it should be.
    Here is the code:
    oTable.addColumn(new sap.ui.table.Column({
                label: new sap.ui.commons.Label({
                    text: "Shop",

            var oModel = sap.ui.getCore().getModel();
            oTable.setModel(oModel);
            oTable.bindRows("/items");
    Any help would be appreciated, I can't see what's wrong here, all seems fine to me! Thanks!

    HI Bob
    I briefly scan thru your code and spotted one common issue. When we are binding property, we need to include the model name. e.g.
    template: new sap.ui.commons.TextField().bindProperty("value", "shop"),
    should be
    template: new sap.ui.commons.TextField().bindProperty("value", "tempModel>shop"),
    -D

  • Mapping not showing up for Oracle Tables

    I'm just getting started with OWB after attending a class and am using the textbooks received with the course. I've created a project with modules for different schemas each containing several Oracle tables. I don't get the Mapping for either of these modules nor can I use the configure option to create Mappings. Does anyone know what I can do?

    For our OWB projects, we create all modules as target
    modules. It is probably a good idea not to use
    source modules since OMBPlus does not recognize them.Hi,
    I think you may be missing the essential difference between source and warehouse modules. A source module is just that, a place where definitions of he source data is held, which is that data outside the scope of the warehouse project. As such, it makes no sense for OMBplus to reference this information.
    As a practical example, it would make absolutely no sense to run OMBplus against your operational OLTP sytem from which you extract your source data.
    The value of source modules is that you can reference this 'remote' data as though it is local data, and because you have its metadata, you can manipulate it and map from it as though it is 'yours', even though it isn't. Further, the Import Metadata Wizard can provide details on source system changes, and you can then analyse the impact.
    But I'm still puzzled about automatic reconciliation. Please see "Metadata Import and Reconcile" for further details. (52 views and no replies? Surely someone knows how to do this!).
    Cheers,
    Donna

  • Subject Area not showing for Single Logical Table Repository Schema

    Hi
    I'm trying to create a very simple OBIEE repository schema for a sales proof of concept. The schema consits of a single physical table, single BMM (logical) table and a single presentation table.
    I have created all the layers OK. However, when I check for global consistancy i get an error message 'Logical table SALES_POC does not join to any other logical table'. Now i understand this error, but in this case this is how the design is intended. However, if ignore this error i'm not seeing the new subject area after bouncing BI server & BI presentation services.
    Anyone know a way round this, or do i need to have at least 2 logical tables?
    Thanks
    James

    Yes I think RPD is in the correct folder & NQSConfig.INI is set correctly.
    RPD is called ethreeCustomv1.RPD & saved in /ora/biee/10.1.3.4/OracleBI/server/Repository
    NQSConfig.INI has the following definition:
    [ REPOSITORY ]
    BIEE = ethreeCustomv1.rpd, DEFAULT;
    [ CACHE ]
    ENABLE     =     NO;

  • Apex_plsql_job.submit_process job not showing up in apex_plsql_jobs table

    Hello ghurus,
    I am running APEX 3.1 on Oracle 10g 10.2.0.1 and am trying to run a potentially long running procedure in the background so the user doesn't have to sit and watch the hourglass.
    The button process has the following code:
    DECLARE
    return_code NUMBER;
    exec_stg VARCHAR2(4000);
    squote VARCHAR2(1) := chr(39);
    edit_cnt NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    SELECT COUNT(*)
    INTO edit_cnt
    FROM edit_history eh
    WHERE eh.rept_inst = :f104_curinst
    AND eh.rept_time_frame = :f104_curterm
    AND eh.submission = :f104_cursubm
    AND eh.edit_complete_dtm IS NULL;
    univdb.exception_logging.insert_log(0, 'NO SQL ERROR', 'apex_editsubm','count=' || to_char(edit_cnt));
    IF edit_cnt = 0
    THEN
    INSERT INTO univdb.edit_history
    (rept_inst,
    rept_time_frame,
    submission,
    audit_id)
    VALUES
    (:f104_curinst,
    :f104_curterm,
    :f104_cursubm,
    :app_user);
    COMMIT;
    univdb.exception_logging.insert_log(0, 'NO SQL ERROR', 'apex_editsubm',
    'insert row successful');
    exec_stg := 'univdb.edit_any_submission(' || squote || :f104_curinst ||
    squote || ', ' || squote || :f104_curterm || squote || ', ' ||
    squote || :f104_cursubm || squote || ', ' || squote ||
    :app_user || squote || ');';
    univdb.exception_logging.insert_log(0, 'NO SQL ERROR', 'apex_editsubm',exec_stg);
    return_code := apex_plsql_job.submit_process(exec_stg);
    univdb.exception_logging.insert_log(0, 'NO SQL ERROR', 'apex_editsubm','return_code=' || to_char(return_code));
    commit;
    END IF;
    END;
    The calls to exception_logging write a row to a table so I can see what's happening in the process and I get the following rows writte:
    count=0
    insert row successful
    univdb.edit_any_submission('UNIV', '200701', 'TEF', 'ELSA_LESLIE');
    return_code=103
    The last message implies to me that the job was successfully submitted but when I query the apex_plsql_jobs table, job 103 does not exist and the procedure never gets executed. The procedure does work when tested outside of APEX.
    I checked all of my grants according to the post in this thread and they are all there:
    Re: Missing apex_plsql_job in 3.1
    Does anyone have a suggestion?
    ...elsa

    Hi Elsa
    I am also having similar problems calling the APEX_PLSQL_JOB.SUBMIT_PROCESS as well where it doesn't insert into the APEX_PLSQL_JOBS table.
    I also noticed that you used SCHEDULER. One of the challenges we are having is when the user presses the submit button, the browser hangs and doesn't return the result set until the process is complete. This process can take 20 mins before the screen loads saying the process was finished. I have tried used DBMS_JOB as we aren't on 10g and can not use SCHEDULER, but still having that issue where the user has to wait 20 mins before the process finishes.
    Did you ever solve that problem where the user clicks the button and then a page is returned immediately while the job is firing away with scheduler
    Any help would be great and much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • :: NWA does not show table view for monitoring reports ::

    Hi,
    We are facing an issue in one of our portal system.
    I click on Portal index page, then I go to Net weaver Administrator --> Monitoring --> Java system reports.
    Here I get the resource utilization graphs.
    The graphs show proper values however when I click on table view it does not show any value or table at all.
    Then I click on Settings button, and click on Persistent radio button.
    It asks to enter the number of days for which the the data should be stored.
    I gave it as 2 days and click on Apply button.
    It shows a message saying "changes would be effective after restarting monitoring service".
    However when I go there i.e. NWA --> Administration --> Applications
    I get below services
    cafruntimemonitoring~ear
    com.sap.ip.bi.sdk.monitoring
    tclmwebadminmonitoravail~wd
    tclmwebadminmonitorcomplib~wd
    tclmwebadminmonitorprovider_ear
    tclmwebadminmonitorstate~wd
    tclmwebadminoverviewmonitoring~wd
    tcmonitoringsysteminfo
    Would you kindly suggest which service from above list should be restarted ?
    Thank you, Regards,
    Girish Garje.

    I think what is being asked is "How do I expose a database view as a schema table in Configuration Manager?"
    This is accomplished by creating a database view within the WCC database schema (and with the WCC schema user as the view owner). The view then will appear as a table in the "table" tab in Configuration Manager.
    One caveat in 11g is that the user created by RCU does not have any privileges to read/create views in its own schema. You may need to grant privileges to views for the WCC schema user before this will work.

  • Arp table and mac table in cisco 4503 switch

    Hi all,
    I have a problem with 4503 switch
    I have 7 highend servers in my lan i.e 5hp and 2dell servers.
    Each server has 4 network interface cards(1g). so 7*4=28 ports.
    I have create vlan 70, ip add is 10.70.70.1
    I have assign ip address to servers like
    first server         10.70.70.2, 10.70.70.12,
    Second server   10.70.70.3, 10.70.70.13,
    Third server        10.70.70.4, 10.70.70.14,
    fourth Server       10.70.70.5, 10.70.70.15, 10.70.70.25, 10.70.70.35
    fifth server           10.70.70.6, 10.70.70.16, 10.70.70.26, 10.70.70.36
    sixth server          10.70.70.7, 10.70.70.17, 10.70.70.27, 10.70.70.37
    seventh server      10.70.70.8, 10.70.70.18, 10.70.70.28, 10.70.70.38
    The problem is in four interfaces each server, only one or two interfaces are pinging, remaining interface are not pinging.
    for example in the first server i can able to ping 10.70.70.12- macid 60eb.69d2.a2aa
                                                i can't able to ping 10.70.70.2- macid 60eb.69d2.a2ab
    second, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh continiously pinging successfully.
    for example in fourth server i can able to ping 10.70.70.5 macid -b499.bafe.9c98
                                             i can able to ping 10.70.70.15 macid-b499.bafe.9c98
                                             i can able to ping 10.70.70.25 macid-b499.bafe.9c98
                                             i can able to ping 10.70.70.35 macid-b499.bafe.9c98
    now you understand what is the problem, which server i am not getting pinging that arp table shows each interface separte mac address
                                                       which server i am getting pinging that arp table shows each interface bind with same mac address(dynamically)
    Please give me the solution

    Hi,
    I Think you need to do Teaming on the servers.
    ++ configure etherchannel between switch and the server.
    configuring etherchannel b/w 4503 and server:
    ================================
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk213/technologies_configuration_example09186a008089a821.shtml
    Sample NIC Teaming - HP NICs with Cisco Switches (EtherChannel) :
    ==============================================
    http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX434260
    There are several NIC teaming technologies available today from  switch vendors.  Cisco uses the term “EtherChannel.”  Various switch  vendors use various terms, and these may or may not provide the same  exact functionality. Use of EtherChannel technology requires support  from the server hardware vendor, NIC vendor, and Layer-2 switch vendor.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers
