Host of ibook (1.33 ghz) problems.

hi, i'm having serious problems with my ibook at the moment, not certain that some of them may have started after installing 10.4.4 but here they are:
Ibook boot's by first displaying some old (system 9 looking) menu which displays a hard drive icon in the middle saying macintosh HD with 2 icons: at the left is an icon which looks like a redo icon...a kind of circular arrow and at the right is a straight arrow, which, one pressed continues to boot the O/S. This has just started happening fairly recently i think.. possibly after 10.4.4.
The next, and most irritating is that the keyboard will change to typing symbols for no reason when using the machine, every single button displays a symbol rather than the letters.
Next, i found the ibook on sleep, unplugged i think, with the lid down, randomly going in and out of sleep with the disk collector mechanism clicking all the time...once i opened the lid this stopped.
And finally, today, the ibook decided to download files in safari when you clicked on a link. For example if you were to click on the discussions link in the apple site, it would download the link html file instead of opening the page and then place the file on your desktop....i am writing this on my powerbook.
Please help anyone as this was my Mother's birthday present and she's very dissapointed with the fact that such problems are happening and the ibook is barely useable.
Do apple not test their gear before releasing software updates and releasing hardware? Thanks for any help peeps, Ryan

It sounds like the OPTION key may be stuck down. That might also explain the weirdness in Safari.

  • Ibook G4 software update problems

well, i cant get software update, because after i installed mac os x combined
my safari closes unexpectedly. i couldnt solve this. if anyone has any idea, that would be great. thx guys

    Hi,
I too cannot update my software 10.4. the software update in the menu keeps quitting. I have checked the support site and I found a tip on this matter concerning network port configurations. I did the advised to turn the ethernet on. but it has No result. I also tried going through the system preference pane but also no luck here.
I have a download for 10.4.6 but it won't install because of not enough memory. It says it requires 488 MB. (it took me 7 hours o download this..here in greece we still use pigeons
What do I do to get this free space? on RAM? What do I have to take off to get this free space? My Applications? There are no documents or files of any other other kind on the iBook yet as the computer has been totally cleaned up while in service for a new HD.
*--(Under 10.3.3 it kept quitting application and in the end couldn't start them up either, or they would start but wouldn't show any windows, the menu's would't work. Sound familiar to anyone? There is more horrifying stuff to tell with this problem, but it is more fit for another topic).--*
Can anyone tell me where I can see how much free space I have and what is used? and by what?
I have a lot of memory so I don't understand.
But I'm not that good with this stuff, I am more the creative sorceress. Hope somebody can be of help.
    best, Miki

  • IBook G4 14" Display Problem

My daughter's iBook G4 14" 2004 1.07 GHz. screen broke when she dropped it. I bought a replacement and installed it. The screen seems to be OK, however, almost immediately after startup I get horizontal lines, first grouped at the bottom of the screen then expanding to the top. While the screen is perfectly legible, there is a constant jitter and the image is distorted.
If I connect the laptop to my G4 screen, I get a perfect picture on the monitor.
I don't know enough about the theory of operation to troubleshoot. I understand that the low voltage data cable maybe at fault.
I would appreciate if anyone could clarify this for me. I could replace the cable from the broken LCD display module which was working fine, but I am reluctant to undertake this task unless I am certain that the cable is at fault. Otherwise, I may ruin a perfectly good display module.
    Thank you.

hello, this sounds like a similar problem i am having with my ibook g4. the screen is scrolling slightly on certain backgrounds. everything can be read still but its all pixalated. there is a green shimmering effect and also a pink shimmering effect. i am not used to macs so not sure what to do. to better explain whats going on, i would compare this to what a pc video card looks like without drivers installed for it.
i checked the display settings and its set to a million colors and a resolution od 1024x768.
what did u do to fix?

  • IOS 6.0.1 and iBook 3.0.1 - problems with interactive epub

My iPad 2 was recently updated wtih IOS 6.0.1 and iBook 3.0.1. After the recent update some of my interactive epub files are not working properly. Mainly slideshows, working fine earlier, where I have used jquery and javascript. Does anyone know why? Is there a bug in the updates. Thanks for helping me out of this problem.

    LadyAce
Did you see a release note on it somewhere or did you find out through your own experience with it?
Since it was a quietly released 13.3 I am curious what it fixed officially. According to the release notes from Apple with 6.0.1 it did not make any mention that it was patching the data leaking when using WiFi and cell data. Only that complaints of dropped wifi from people using iPads and iPhones that was previously reported was fixed.

  • IBook G4 video streaming problem

I wasn't quite sure which forum to post this in, so I chose this one because it's kind of an internet related problem.
Anyway, whenever I stream a video over the internet on my iBook G4 (1.33GHz 12" version) using either Safari or Firefox the processor temperature rapidly increases from around 50 degrees celsius (122 F) to 63.5 C (146.3 F) causing the fan to activate.
When watching a video saved on my hard drive the temperature barely increases, it just seems to be when I stream them online.
Any ideas as to why the processor gets so warm so quickly when streaming a video?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Solved it myself.
    ¿And how, may I ask?

  • When I type .ssh root@10.0.02 it says host not recognized I'm unable to get in to known host file can not fix the problem.

When I open terminal and do sash [email protected] it says warning rsa key not recognized to go to known-hosts file which ican not grt into I have download pico but am not sure how to launch it or what I ave to do.

sibeen, please stop starting new posts when you are really just continuing the first post.  "Reply" to one of your existing posts when you are really just continuing the same question.  If I have not lost count, you have posted 3 times about this same ssh rsa host key issue, and Linc Davis and I have been trying to keep track of all the details, but with it spread out across multiple new posts, it is difficult.
I'm guessing as you again forgot to post the actual error (I'm starting to wonder if you are testing how well Linc and I can guess at your problem ).  Anyway, I'm guessing that you managed to delete the $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts file, and now when you try to ssh to 10.0.0.2 it wants to add the remote system's host rsa key into a newly created known_hosts file.
The authenticity of host '[10.0.0.2]:22([10.0.0.2]:22)' can't be established.
    RSA key fingerprint is xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
Generally the command ask if you want to do this, yes or no.  You type "yes" and your Mac memorizes the remote system's host rsa key.
If this is not the warning message you are seeing, then as Linc has requested, please post the exact error (feel free to mask put the actual key or usernames or IP addresses, but keep the words.
If you are still getting the original error from 3 posts ago, then I would not try editing $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts, and instead just delete the file, and when you get a message like I have posted above, answer it with "yes".
WIth respect to pico, Mac OS X already has pico installed, so there was  no need to download it from anywhere.  However, most people just use 'nano' which has essentially replaced 'pico' as an easy to use Terminal based text editor.  But like I said, I think you will be happier if you just delete the known_hosts file and get on with your ssh operations.
Finally, I think in your 2nd post you indicated you tried deleting a file that had a dash in the name (known-hosts) instead of an underscore (known_hosts).  If that was just a typo when you entered your post, and you were really getting you cannot delete a directory, then something is seriously wrong, or you accidentally allowed a space to be inserted between .ssh and known_hosts.  Personally, I'm going with you actually entered a space and the 'rm' command thought you wanted to delete the .ssh directory instead of $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts.  I could be wrong, but using copy and paste to post actual Terminal screen output as well as the command you entered would be very helpful to anyone trying to provide useful information.  In other words, help us help you.

  • IBooks Author TrueType font problem

I'm working on an iBook and I'm attempting to use a truetype font for a page heading, but when I preview it on my iPad, the font shows up correctly for a brief moment, then is replaced by something generic. I have confirmed in the Font Book application that the font is a .ttf, and it DOES show up in the font selector drop down menu on the formatting bar in iBooks Author. Why would the font show up correctly for a second or two and then disappear on the iPad?

It would appear that there's a bug in the preview mode. Maybe something to do with a cached version of the book? I fixed the problem by deleting the "proof" version on my iPad and re-sending it and now the truetype font shows up correctly.

  • Help with iBook G3 12" Logicboard problem

    Hello.
I have a strange problem with an iBook G3 12" 600 MHz, maybe you can help me.
    this is the story
A friend gave me what he called a "dead ibook"
The first thing I noticed is that when I connect the AC adapter, the plug light (orange) turns on for 1/2 second, I can hear a click and then the light turns off.
at this point if I try to reconnect the plug, the AC adapter does not send power anymore and I have to unplug the AC adapter from wall main plug.
I have tested with another AC adapter from an iBook G4...same result
I have removed the battery and tried re-connecting the G3 only with the AC adapter ... same result.
I have disconnected the AC adapter and tried using a fully charged battery from the G4 in to the G3, and... Surprise!! the iBook G3 boots perfectly!! and the Mac os x works perfectly.
At this point I thought that maybe was a faulty DC-in board. I bought a new one. After disassembling the iBook and put the new DC-in board the iBook has the same symptoms...
Conclusion: Imposible to use a AC adapter, the iBook only can work with battery.
There must be something in the logic board that is shorting something, but I can´t find it.
Can you give me some ideas?? I´m lost
    thank you

It could be a logic board problem or it could be that you got another defective DC-in board. It would not be the first time that a second defective DC-in board has been reported here.
If it is the logic board, chances are the only remedy is a logic board replacement. When my husband's DC-in board was bad, we just swapped batteries until he got it fixed. Since these iBooks are getting quite old, you may want to just do the battery-swap with the iBook G4 instead of repairing the iBook G3. It gets to a point where the expense of a repair just isn't worth it on a computer this old.
    Good luck.

  • IBook (Dual USB) Sound Problem

    The item:
    iBook Dual USB, 800MHz, 32 VRAM, CD-ROM,
partitioned HD with OS 9.2.2 & Tiger.
I have installed OS 9.2.2 on the smaller partition via FireWire using Apple's OS 9.2.1 install CD + OS 9.2.2 Updater from Apple's website.
Sound works perfectly in OS X environment.
The problem - OS 9 environment (Booted into OS9)
Great 'Bong" when it boots - BUT - NO SOUND after that. None. Silence. No System sounds. No AOL login sound. No iTunes sound.
All 'sound' related settings are properly adjusted. Nothing is 'muted'. Platinum System sounds are selected. Finder menu blinks to indicate that there should be a noise - but all is deadly silent.
Control Strip Sound menu slider is almost at bottom. Adjusting it UP results in menu blink - and it returns to it previous position.
Sound volumne slider in Sound Control Panel 'snaps' back to the far left when moved to the right.
Sound Control Panel / Input menu shows the following warning:
"The settings for the sound input source cannot be adjusted becasue the device is in use by another application."
I have no other sound-related software installed. No device using the sound port is present. It's a 'naked' OS 9.2.2 install + AOL 5. It acted the same way BEFORE I installed AOL.
What must I do to make this little beauty make the proper sounds, please... ?
Your successfull suggestion will have me singing your praises.

  • IBook G4 display size problem

I ran the Safari 4.0 update and restarted my iBook G4 (PowerPC). Now the display is slightly larger than my actual screen size, and the graphics quality is worse -- everything appears slightly out of focus. As I move the mouse around, the display moves also; for example, if I move the mouse to the upper left, the Apple menu icon comes into view, but I can't see the dock on the right, and if I move the mouse to the right, the dock comes into view, but the Apple menu moves beyond the edge of the screen. I looked at the Displays menu; I'm set at 1024x768, and my only other options are 640x480 and 800x600, neither of which helps. What has happened, and how do I get my old display back?

I posted this same question on MacRumors, and someone told me how to solve my problem. For some reason, the zoom function (for people with vision problems) had been turned on. I went to System Preferences -> Universal Access and turned zoom off. Problem solved. Only question remaining is how it turned on in the first place. There's apparently a quick-key combination to turn it on, so I'll blame the cat walking across the keyboard.

  • OS 10.4.11 on iBook G4 mouse selection problem

I have a rebuilt iBook G4 (after hard disc crash) which I have 'wound  back' at least 5 years to encourage  compatibilities. (At the moment I can't afford to upgrade.)  So I'm sticking with Panther (10.4.11), Firefox 3.0.19, Eudora 6.2.4, iTunes 6, Office 2004.  It's fine except for a persistent problem with mouse key input freezes.  Mouse tracking is fine, keyboard input continues, but mouse input to all applications and OS becomes impossible and there is no way out but to restart.
I've tried changing back to an old ball-mouse (it's not the mouse drivers), switching off Firefox plugins (don't think it's them), Alt-Command-Esc force quitting Firefox and then other applications.  I've searched the back pages of the net for insights (lots of memory problems with Panther causing mouse failure, but not this particular problem.
    Any memories ?
    Iain

    Hello Iain,
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions, but the newest version doesn't support any plugins at all, so look for an older one...

  • What happened? I installed 10.4 on my G4 1.33 iBook 10.4too old- problems!

    Hello,
Recently I purchased a 1.33 iBook on ebay for my wife. Upon receiving it I swapped out the 40GB with a Seagate 100GB. I then installed OS 10.4 (not the iBook grey discs, but the retail version which was 10.4.2)
Well this caused problems, no mouse trackpad use, and more.
Now, the iBook install discs aren't recognized. Either they don't mount, or the computer says that it's blank or does not recognize it.
Oh, I did Erase the 100 with OS Journaled.
Now, I've never owned a computer so new that the OS retail version was older than the computer's needs.
What do I do now? I'm real close to reinstalling the 40. But if anyone can tell me how to fix this problem I'd appreciate it.
I've tried everything from target disc installing (with a 10.4.6) to external DVD drive istall.
I've done pram reset, PMU reset... basically it's like there's a firmware not present to communicate with the optical drive.
If no one has a resolution... can someone atleast tell me what I've done?
    Thanks,
    Dzve

Putting an older OS on a unit that required 10.4.2 was the problem. Drivers did not install and caused it to behave poorly.
Most of it regarded the disc drive. I now wonder if I could have installed patch burn once one of the OS installs worked. That might have cured it. Nonetheless, I sold the computer with full disclosure on the problem and purchased a different one for my wife.

  • My iBook has a little problem

    Hi,
first of all I've to excue my terrible English, it's a long time ago I learned it at school.
So, my little iBook G4 has a big problem. It got a new battery because of the Sony-battery-change in August.
Since then it can't charge when I shut it.
It still wants to boot and the battery doesn't charge...
What can I do? Is it because of the new battery or another problem?
    Thanks,
    Laurana1981

Laurana1981, Welcome to the discussion area!
Have you tried resetting the PMU?

  • IBook G3 Power/charge problem

I have a ibook G3. It doesn't charge properly (taking two days to charge to 6% which drains in minutes when turned on)
I have reset the PMU with the little button on the side. I have also tried plugging in the power adaptor with and without the battery in place to see if I can use it that way but it makes no difference. I can see it recognises that a charger is plugged in (I've bought a new charger/adaptor thinking that may have been the problem but it makes no difference)it is just not utilising the power. What can I do?
