Host recomendation - linux - php/mysql

Hi gangsters and molls :)
I'm looking again for some advice from the knowledgable
contributors of
this forum, of which there are many, many, many!
I'm in need of a host, that provides php/mysql linux and some
good
online instructions (preferably the hosts own instructions)
about
tranfering/connecting the database up. I'm as thick as two
planks when
it comes to moving the the dynamic technical stuff over to a
remote
host, so bear that in mind. I try but I'm getting old and
past my
sell-by date :(
I've done this on a couple of occasions (some time ago
though), spent a
good few hours resolving connection issues but finally
everything
worked. However if anyone knows of a good host and some good
walk ya
through instructions to save me some hassle I'd be grateful.
I'm not really that bothered where the host is (preferably uk
but I'm
open minded)........EASE OF USE & SET-UP is paramount on
this ocassion.
Cheers!
Os.

Humm....why does a connection to a remote database seem so
imposing.
Should be a simple drag and drop solution.
I don't even know where the database file is created on my
Mac but
apparently you have to create a 'dump' file to transfer it to
a remote
location. I can do that in phpMyAdmin but wouldn't it be
simple if there
was an identifiable file which you could just grab hold of
and drag
across.......bummer all seem complicated to me.

Humm I have some instruction docs from a host that I have
previously
used but thaey might as well be written in chinese.
Do you know if I can set up a website on one server and have
it pull
information from a database which is hosted on another
server?

  • Hosting a SaaS PHP/MySQL web application

    Hi
    I am building a PHP web application ( to be used by about 5 customers ) with MySQL database using partitionning strategy for scalabilty purpose.

    Is MySQL partitionning a good strategy for such app?

  • PHP/Mysql issue

    I use Dreamweaver CS3 to create my sites on a Windows/Apache
    Server with PHP5 and Mysql 5. The site works perfectly on my
    testing server at home. On the Web server I'm getting the following
    error which causes the page to not load:
    PHP Warning: mysql_query(): supplied argument is not a valid
    MySQL-Link resource in
    /hermes/bosweb/web248/b2488/ipw.horsehelp/public_html/residents/residents.php
    on line 63
    PHP Warning: mysql_select_db(): supplied argument is not a
    valid MySQL-Link resource in
    /hermes/bosweb/web248/b2488/ipw.horsehelp/public_html/residents/residents.php
    on line 61
    The lines in question are:
    Line 61 - mysql_select_db($database_conn_phh, $conn_phh);
    $query_getSuccess = "SELECT * FROM horses WHERE status =
    'Success Story' ORDER BY horse_barn ASC";
    $getSuccess = mysql_query($query_getSuccess, $conn_phh) or
    die(mysql_error());
    $row_getSuccess = mysql_fetch_assoc($getSuccess);
    $totalRows_getSuccess = mysql_num_rows($getSuccess);
    All of the code is supplied by Dreamweaver. I did not tweak
    the code. I'm not a web developer and what I have found out there
    is still reading greek to me. My connection file is working and
    connecting the database that I have tested.
    Since the above code is throughout the site in one form or
    another it's causing me major headaches. Any help would be
    appreciated.

    This is the first time I've used Adobe products so if the
    following is in the wrong forum (It's the closest one I found so
    far) or the format is incorrect please forgive me.
    I'm new to Dreamweaver CS3 and as I was reading the "first
    steps" it mentions to set up a Dreamweaver site right away. I got
    as far as completing "Site Definition" page under the basic side of
    the setup screen.
    The next screen is "Do you want to work with server
    Technology?"
    There are 2 options - Yes or No. If you select yes a
    drop-down menu appears with several options (but you can only
    select one)...
    Asp Javascript
    Asp VbScript
    Asp.net#
    Asp.net Vb
    Cold Fusion
    JSP
    Php MySql.
    I know nothing about these format and brand new to web design
    so I thought it best to contact GoDaddy (my hosting account) to
    find out what their servers would support. I spoke to a tech rep
    but she wasn't sure.
    She did mention that I have a windows hosting account and Php
    MySql would not work unless I changed to their Linux platform at no
    additional charge.
    The site I have in mind will design with CSS, Liquid layout,
    have some flash, widgets, an inquiry form that clients complete and
    results e-mailed to me, auto-responder, Paypal link and whatever
    else I can discover from Dreamweaver.
    My question being:
    I haven't even begun designing my site because I do not know
    what weather I should select the Yes option and select one of the
    formats mentioned above (if so which one) - or select the No
    option. If I do select the No option at the very beginning, will I
    have problems with my site uploading and working correctly?
    Thank you

  • I need help with DW, PHP & MySQL please.

    Hello, I am new to website development and am trying to set up a form for collecting data on my website and have a question that I can’t find an answer to anywhere else. I was wandering if someone there would be kind enough to help?  I am using Dreamweaver in CS4 and my host already has PHP & MySQL installed on the server that I can use.  My question is: Do I need to download XAMP or WAMP on my computer before trying to connect my form to the server?  Also, do I need to change the page I am putting the form on to .PHP extension or can I just embed the PHP form into an existing HTML page?
    Most of the training tutorials I’ve read don’t start at the most basic beginning but rather expect people to already have a basic knowledge of the topics they are trying to learn.  If anyone knows the best place to get answers to the most basic questions like this one or a beginners guide to working with DW, PHP & MySQL I will gladly go there rather than waste your time on questions you’ve probably already answered a bezillion times.
    Thank you for the help.

    Strictly speaking, you don't need XAMPP or WAMP on your local computer. But if you're serious about getting involved with PHP/MySQL, you should definitely set up a local testing environment with one or the other. It's safer and more efficient. Don't expose all your errors on a live server. You can find instructions on  how to set up a testing environment here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/setting_up_php.html.
    To develop with PHP, you should always use a .php file name extension. Any other choice is very rare.
    There's a tutorial on building your first dynamic website with DW here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/first_dynamic_site_pt1.html.
    For more in-depth help, you might want to consider grabbing hold of a copy of "The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS4 with CSS, Ajax, and PHP". (Yes, I wrote it, so it's a bit of shameless self-promotion, but you'll find it answers many of your questions - and probably a lot you hadn't even thought of.)

  • Web hosting for ColdFusion, ROR, Java, PHP, MySQL

    The company I currently use to host my web site supports PHP, MySQL, Ruby on Rails, but I don't think it supports ColdFusion, and I would imagine there are other things I could not put on my web site, such as EJB based Java apps.
    My point is that does anyone know of a web hosting company that supports PHP, MySQL, Ruby on Rails, AND ColdFusion, AND anything else I might need to be able to practice using Flex to connect to data on the server using various technologies, like RemoteObject, WebService, etc.
    The web hosting company must be reliable and stable as well.

    I'd recommend you to get a dedicated server and setup there everything you need.

    I am running Apche/PHP/MySQL on my machine and simple to setup. Few things requires to know. It can be done in different way. This is how I do including how to test the server(s). Host name is: "localhost". If anything is missing, please let me know.
    <b>INSTALL:</b>
    pacman -S apache

  • PHP MySQL Error Code 500

    May be someone can help me out with this problem.
    I have setup a new site using PHP MySQL and Dreamweaver 8.02.
    Dreamweaver connects to the database but after creating a
    recordset the recordset cannot be used.
    instead Dreamweaver returns:
    HTTP Error Code 500 internal Server Error
    Any help will be much appriciated.
    Jos

    Hello,
    I have also had the same error - namely that whilst I could connect via ftp, upload/download files, and view database tables, any attempt to view of modify recordsets resulted in error 500.
    Having checked other potential causes (e.g. selection/non-selection use of passive FTP setting, enabling of php, etc.), on the back of posts here I contacted my host and asked if if could relate to mod security, as further investigation revealed that the issue only occurred on sites where mod security had not been disabled (I don't like to disable mod security for obvious reasons - and I'm told you can't do that site by site with apache2 anyway).
    After a few false starts, the problem was resolved - with the following response from my host: "The false positives were being generated by "/_mmServerScripts/MMHTTPDB.php" and that is what we've worked around in the rules. As such, any domain on [servername] using that script in the same way shouldn't generate a false-positive moving forward."
    So it seems the answer (assuming your on an apache server of course) may be to modify the rules to allow full access for MMHTTPDB.php.
    I hope that is of help to some.

  • PHP / MySQL / Stored Procedures

    I'm trying to call a stored procedure on my site which uses
    php / mySQL 5.x. I've got the procedure working in the database so
    that when I call it from within a MySQL client it executes and
    returns the results I need, but Dreamweaver doesn't even "see" the
    stored procedure.
    By this I mean If I use the recordset wizard, go to advanced,
    select the relevant database and then expand the Stored Procedures
    tab none are listed.
    Searching through Adobe help, it lists nothing about Stored
    Procedures with PHP/MySQL apart from that MySQL doesn't support
    them. The later versions of MySQL do support Stored Procedures, but
    has anyone got them working with Dreamweaver? If so how!??!!
    Any help much appreciated.

    Stored procedures have been available in MySQL only since
    version 5.0,
    which was released in October 2005, one month after
    Dreamweaver 8. It
    would have been nice to include support for stored procedures
    in CS3,
    but no new functionality was added to any of the server-side
    features of
    Dreamweaver. I have my fingers crossed for next time.

    My server doesn't support MySQL 5.0, so apart from the
    information in
    the MySQL documentation, I don't know a great deal about
    using stored
    procedures:
    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/stored-procedures.html
    One of the problems is that many hosting companies are still
    using older
    versions of MySQL (a lot still offer only 3.23). I'm
    currently in the
    process of moving to a new server with support for both PHP 5
    and MySQL
    5.0. Once I've had time to experiment, I hope to know a lot
    more.

  • (PHP/MySql) Create Recordset but no column

    Thanks for reading this, I am new to PHP/MySql
    I have created a website www.ritchiecraft.co.uk which uses
    PHP/MySql with Dreamweaver 8. I have created recordsets on most
    items pages and filtered data as neccessary. After the site was up
    and running I was required to insert a new topic and when I went to
    create a new page and insert the recordset no data was placed in
    the columns area and the filter/sort options were greyed out. I
    checked the existing pages and found that this was happening to all
    pages with recordsets. The connection, table data was there.
    The site still works fine but I cannot introduce new pages or
    edit existing because of the recordset problem. I was advised
    previously to delete the Dreamweaver cache file but this did not
    help.
    The site is hosted commercially and the database was created
    with phpMyAdmin and dont seem to have any connection problems.
    Thanks for your time and any suggestions are welcome.

    You can't do it through the Recordset dialog box. The simple
    way to do
    it is to create this query in the Recordset dialog box:
    SELECT * FROM myTable
    ORDER BY myOrder ASC
    Then go into Code view and locate the following line:
    $query_recordsetName = "SELECT * FROM myTable ORDER BY
    myOrder ASC";
    Change it to this:
    if (isset($_GET['id'])) {
    $col = get_magic_quotes_gpc() ? stripslashes($_GET['id']) :
    $_GET['id'];
    $col = mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['id']);
    else {
    $col = '*';
    $query_recordsetName = "SELECT $col FROM myTable ORDER BY
    myOrder ASC";

  • PHP/MySQL Help Needed

    I'm a beginner with this PHP/MySQL language, but I'm using
    Dreamweaver CS3 to help things along. I've set up my database with
    my host (using PHPmyAdmin) and put in a table with some fields.
    Then I went into Dreamweaver and set up everything and it saw the
    database name perfectly. Then I made a recordset and it saw the
    fields just fine. I then made an input page to put the data into
    the database and that went off without a hitch. I then made a basic
    webpage with nothing but the call to display 2 of the fields in my
    database (I did the test in dreamweaver and it saw all the data I
    populated my database with perfectly). I then told it to preview in
    Firefox and got a blank page... Ok I must have done something
    wrong, so I put in some basic text just so I could see if even that
    would show up correctly. Then I previewed in Firefox again and not
    only did it show up, but the 2 fields showed up as well! Yea! So I
    made some changes to the fields I wanted to show and again did a
    Preview in Firefox. I was again treated to a blank page. Not even
    my basic text was showing up. I went back to Dreamweaver and added
    some more text... preview... works perfectly showing everything. I
    refresh the page and it's blank. I close Firefox and preview again.
    It's a blank page, but for the heck of it I decide to View Source
    and lo and behold all the data is there. I close the source and try
    reloading the page... blank. I'm at a loss. Any idea why this might
    be happening?

    Sorry, I haven't tested anything on an Intel Mac yet. Testing
    everything
    on Vista for my new Dreamweaver book has given me enough of a
    headache.
    However, I'm pretty sure that my editor has an Intel Mac, and
    he
    followed the instructions in "PHP Solutions" without any
    major hiccups.
    (They're pretty much the same as in the Flash book.)
    Isn't there a MySQL.prefPane icon in the MySQL installation
    package? I
    have found that MySQL won't start automatically on 10.4 (it
    did on
    10.3), but as long as you install the prefPane, you should be
    able to go
    in and start it manually.

  • PHP MySql connection to GoDaddy

    I use DWCS4, PHP, MySQL. I have created a MySql database on my GoDaddy-hosted account and can FTP to it and have transferred tables and data to it. However, when I try to create a database connection in DW, I get the following error message; "Your PHP server does not have the MySQL module loaded or you can’t use the mysql_(p)connect functions."
    I searched for solutions on the web (no answers in this forum), and got several results that said to manually create the connection file such as the following
    <?php//Sample Database Connection Syntax for PHP and MySQL.
    //Connect To Database
    $hostname="your_mysqlserver.secureserver.net";
    $username="your_dbusername";
    $password="your_dbpassword";
    $dbname="your_dbusername";
    $usertable="your_tablename";
    $yourfield = "your_field";
    mysql_connect($hostname,$username, $password) OR DIE ("<html><script language='JavaScript'>
    alert('Unable to connect to database! Please try again later.');
    history.go(-1);</script></html>");
    mysql_select_db($dbname);
    ?>
    Just fill in your password etc, save it as connectdb.php (or whatever), and include it at the top of the files that need to access the database. You could use an if statement to determine whether you were working locally or on GoDaddy.
    I tried that, but it still won't connect. (My regular connection for just transferring files works fine).
    Has anyone out there solved the GoDaddy database connection problem?
    Frank

    Check php_info()to see which connector is enabled.
    It should be either mysql or mysqli.
    Since you are having problems with mysql, try to connect with mysqli connector.
    If that won't solve your problem, email GD about your problem, and ask if any mysql connectors are enabled in your hosting plan.

  • PHP+MySQL query with empty value

    Hi!
    Software is DW8 with Apache 2.0.48, MySQL ver. 4.0.15a, PHP
    4.2.3.
    We had problem when a submitted value for 'regionID' in the
    submit page
    was left blank and the following error message appears in the
    result page:
    "You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that
    corresponds
    to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near
    'LIMIT 0,

    The problem was solved by adding at the top of the page:
    <?php
    if (isset($_POST['regionID']) &&
    empty($_POST['regionID'])) {
    $_POST['regionID'] = '0';
    ?>
    How to change the above code to retrieve ALL records when an

    I'm afraid you've picked up rather poor information.
    $_REQUEST relies on
    register_globals being turned on. Since register_globals is
    considered a
    major security risk, the default setting has been off since
    April 2002.
    Many hosting companies have turned register_globals on, in
    spite of the
    security problems, because so many poorly written scripts
    rely on it.
    The PHP development team has decided to resolve this security
    issue once
    and for all by removing register_globals from PHP 6.
    Forget $_REQUEST. Use $_POST and $_GET always. It's safer,
    and it's
    futureproof.

  • How to update PHP, MySQL or Apache

    The Mac OS X 10.6.2 system does not include the latest versions of PHP, MySQL or Apache.
    What is the recommended update procedure for PHP, MySQL or Apache:
    a) automatically by Mac OS X system (is this possible?) or
    b) manually by the administrator (are there any documentations?)
    Many thanks.
    Actual system versions:
    Mac OS X 10.6.2
    MySQL 5.0.82
    Apache 2.2

    Hi, Thanks for your answer.
    That sounds Apple do not seriously release updates of third party packages shipped with the system (like Apache, mySQL ...) very often.
    To use month or year old packages in a web environment is a big risk, e.g. mySQL actual official version is V5.50 / mySQL Version shipped and updated by Mac OS X 10.6.2 Server is V5.0.82).
    The same with Apache and PHP, both are packages included in Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server product by Apple and are included in a old version.
    And when manually updates by the administrator of the server system do not work well or are not supported by the OS X Server system (as I understand your posting), the administrator can not act to improve and secure the system.
    That can only lead to one conclusion: Apple's Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server should not be used in a productive, internet faced web environment.
    Is this true? I do not want to believe this!?
    Is there really no official supported or documented procedure by Apple to keep the integrated third party components updated?
    I'd like to prefer Mac OS X Server odd Linux distribution because it seems more handy to administrate and to use, e.g. tools like Server Admin. These tools are an advantage of Mac OS X Server.

  • Taking my PHP/MySQL site online - how?

    Hi,
    Once I have developed a site on my local PC in DW, utilizing
    PHP and MySQL Administrator, how do I make it work online?
    Obviously I need to use the built-in FPT function in DW - but
    how do I transfer the database files to the server?
    I have searched for an anser to this question for a long time
    - but all the tutorials I find (and I have found a number!) help me
    develop my site locally - and then say nothing about taking it
    online.
    I have developed a number of sites using ASP/Access. When I
    take such a site online, I need to change the connection-string. Is
    the process the same for PHP/MySQL sites? If yes, what change do I
    need to make? And what database-file do I upload to the server, and
    where do I put it?
    Here is where I want to get: I want to have my site locally,
    so that I can make any changes to it when necessary - and then
    upload it so that it now uses the online database. ASP/Access
    allowed me to have both locally, so that I could make any changes.
    Downside is of course you have two versions of the database, one
    local, one remote.
    My host uses PHPMyAdmin. I see I can download a version of
    this and use it locally. Should I do that and use that? Does it do
    the same as PHP Administrator?
    As you can see I have many questions. I think I am missing a
    few key-thoughts that will help me understand PHP and MySQL and
    make go "oh, now I get it!'
    Please feel free to point me to tutorials that you believe I
    will find helpful.
    Thanks for your help in advance!

    Sounds like you need to export your database and then import
    it into
    your production server. Then upload the website, adjust the
    connection
    string so that its pointing to the correct server with the
    correct
    credentials and away you go.
