Hosted Voice Solution

Hi Guys,
Any one of you have worked on hosted voice solution? Can you please let me know what kind of hosted solution is available and it positive and negetive aspect?

Cisco's formal HCS offering, supplied by approved partners*, is the only official one these days. There used to be partners offering other options where multiple customers would co-exist on one CUCM cluster but the CSS/partitions would keep them separated. To my knowledge, these are all deprecated since the HCS announcement. Of course, there are non-Cisco offerings out there too.
The HCS offering is actually pretty decent, mostly because it's the same CUCM/CUC/IM&P/etc. products that customers can install on-premise. There are essentially two differences:
The required infrastructure to setup an HCS pod is prohibitively expensive for anyone except the big players. It's mostly carrier-grade equipment that an end customer would never buy.
The products are abstracted behind a provisioning/billing application (telecom parlance calls this Operations Support System or OSS). Last I checked this was Voss product that Cisco was OEMing. This is the only difference that really matters to you because it sets up the dial plan and such with some assumptions that you wouldn't otherwise be confined to if programming CUCM directly.
Editorial comment: Whether this is good or bad depends on the customer. CUCM is very flexible because it has such a huge install base across so many market sizes/verticals. It can be shaped to fit most custom requirements; however, the OSS toolset takes a far more cookie-cutter approach.
Other than the OSS toolset, it's essentially a normal Cisco UC deployment: they simply connect the VRF instance for you as a tenant in HCS into your WAN. After that it's effectively a Centralized Call Processing model. Normal voice gateway/SRST options at the offices and IP phones or Jabber for users.
*Full disclosure: my employer is one of those partners.

    Hi Tenaro,
    Thank you for your question.
At current, we do not setup CUCM in a multi-tenant configuration. Each HCS end-customer gets their own unique CUCM cluster, the same goes for Unity Connection and Unified Presence.
There are a few pieces of software that are unique to HCS
    1) HCM - F - This component is used to automate the upgrades of the UC applications, produce bundle-based billing reports from the configuration domain, and also automatically provision/configure the Service Assurance architecture so as you deploy HCS to end customers, the monitoring of those configurations is automatically done for you.
    2) Prime Central for HCS Assurance - This component is responsible for provides lots of functionality in regards to monitoring the HCS solution. It aggregates data from CUOM, CUSM, DCNM, and vCenter and can display all the events/errors/alarms that those components are reporting. It also has the ability to normalize these errors and forward them to an exisitng alarm management or ticketing system via SNMP traps. It also includes a reatures like fault correlation (root cause analysis) and service impact analysis which allows you to see what services are affected based on the error information that is being reported.
    3) This last item is not really a piece of software, but more an advantage over using UC on UCS as opposed to HCS. Within HCS we allow the over subscription of your UCS resources for some of the smaller OVAs where in UC on UCS you would be required to map a vCPU to an entire core. This allows for much greater denisty. Also, the HCS licensing scheme allows for the SP to pool licenses and transfer between the customers as needed where in UC on UCS, these licenses are bound to customers, once purchased.
To answer your last question, we sell HCS to service providers and partners. Partners may need to have customers bring their own PSTN connectivity or partner with an SP to provide PSTN access, but either way, partners are just as capable of providing this service.
Hope that helps. Thanks again Tenaro!

    Hi J,
The process of creating a new customer is not yet fully automated, but we are working on vCenter integration that may eventually automate this process. With HCS, you would build a "golden template" of the UC apps that your customers would be consuming.
The golden template is essentially an image of the UC App (UCM Pub, UCM Sub, UCxN, and CUP) that has parameters and configurations that you think every customer will be using. There are some caveats to what you configure since the provisioning tool, Cisco Unified Communications Domain Manager (UCDM), will be provisioning the system for you after you create the customer instances.
Once you have your golden templates, you are ready to start rolling out customers. You would clone the golden templates to create your new customer instance. Then you run what are called the "new identity" scripts on the cloned VMs. This new Identity script is built into the UC application (From 8.0 and later). It essentially involves you using the Answer File Generator on cisco.com to create an answer file for the application of interest and then you mount this answer file via a floppy image to your newly cloned VM. Once the floppy is mounted, you can go ahead and run the new identity script "utils import config" from the CLI of the UC app. It will rename, re-IP, change DNS servers, and lots of other platform information about the system that you can configure. Finally, it will reboot the system. Some of this process can also be automated using VMware's vMA toolset using scripts that the HCS team can provide.
Once the new identity script has been run, you have a new install for your new customer. Then you would input the new address information into UCDM and begin the bulk provisioning of the system. The UCDM would be bulk creating users, phones, VM accounts, partitions, CSS's, and just about everything else for the UC environment.
Once again, stay tuned for some future automation enhancements in this area, but at current (HCS 8.0.2 and soon to be 8.6.1) this is the method for provisioning a new customer from scratch in VMware.

You can download CME 4.0 by downloading the right IOS image. (I am not sure of licensing, if you do this).
The IOS version for CME 4.0 that I have seen is 12.4(9)T, although later versions may have for example CME 4.01 (??)

If they are on the same LAN, registered to the same CCM, the only thing you need to do is to configure the Cisco routers correctly for voice. RSVP works well now (not in the past) Setup some voice prirotization and you should be set. Usually the microwave boxes have low ms roundtrip times, do you should be ok for voice quality.

  • Can't connect to my wesite host (Network Solutions) Server.

When trying to connect through the Expression Web application to my Website Host Server, I get an Server error: Error 2 opening registry key Software/microsoft/shared tools/web server extensions/ports/port 80. It has something to do with a Front Page Extension.
My website was hosted with Network Solutions for close to ten years, and I had a Front Page Extension issue in the past which was resolved at the host sever. Not anymore, tech personnel (farmed out to non English speaking entities) is not helpful at all.
Searching for answers, I got suggestions to do a registry modification (Registry Key Permissions), but I cannot find an entry "Web Server Extensions" in my registry. Is there any way to resolve my problem?

Thanks for the prompt response. I was afraid that I am screwed having build my website with Front Page and later migrated to Expression Web.
Network Solutions is in the process of updating to Windows Server 2012 R2.
Dear Hosting Customer, Tomorrow, your Network Solutions hosting package will be updated to Windows Server 2012 R2, resulting in a brief interruption of your hosting service.
This update is necessary to keep your server up to date, secure and running properly. The migration will take place tomorrow, and will last approximately 1 hour. NOTE: AWStats user credential has changed. Please use your default ftp credentials if you need
to access the awstats page directly. Next Steps: In
order for this migration to run smoothly, we need you to do a couple of things depending on your package set up.
FrontPage Extensions: FrontPage extensions will no longer be available.
As a result, customers with FrontPage Extensions will need to update their sites in order for them to continue to work.
.NET 1.1 or Earlier Platforms: .NET 1.1 will no longer be supported
after the Windows update. Customers with .NET need to update their site in order for them to continue to work.
External Domain Pointers: Customers with external domains. (Domain
names not registered with Network Solution or are not using Network Solution name servers) pointing to a Windows 2003 hosting package need to update their ADNS for the domain with a new IP address.
Your new IP address is 209.17.116.7
NetSol Domains: Customers with a NetSol domain and pointing to a
Windows 2003 hosting package will have their A record changed automatically. No intervention on their part is needed
In addition to many Network Solutions features that continue to be supported, there are new features you will get with this upgrade.
Now I have to find a way to update my site, and any suggestion on how to go about it would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • SRP547W with an Asterisk system?

I hope this is not a stupid question, but is it possible to configure an SRP547W's FXO/FXS ports to work with an Asterisk server?
I'm setting up a small office to use an Asterisk server and I was going to add a SPA3102 Voice Gateway, to allow me to connect the existing PSTN line and one FXS phone to the Asterisk system, but as I already have an SRP547W as the main office router, I thought it may be possible to utilise its FXO/FXS ports to do the job?
I had a quick search for examples, but nothing obvious, so before I even try playing with the SRP547's settings, I thought I'd ask here, in case anyone can either catagorically confirm it won't work, or anyone that has a similar working setup?
    Thanks
    Clive

    Hi Clive,
To an extent, you can do this, but you need to consider the following:
The SRP voice interfaces were designed specifically for hosted voice solutions - i.e. where the call control exists on the Internet side of the SRP.  Specifically, the voice stack is bound to the public IP address of the WAN interface and all signalling / media will intially source from there.
The FXO port in the SRP is really there for FXS port resiliency.  There is no user agent associated with this interface, so can't therefore be used by Asterisk as a PSTN gateway.  Of course, the FXS ports can be controlled by Asterisk, subject to point 1 above.  For clarity: calls presented to the FXO port are locally switched to one or more of the FXS ports.  Dial plan may be used to route calls presented to any of the FXS ports over the FXO line.
    Hope that helps,
    Andy
