Hosting a website

so i followed these directions by apple
"You can use the Apache Web server software included with Mac OS X to host a website on your computer.
Open System Preferences, click Sharing, click the File & Web tab, and turn on Web Sharing.
Web pages you put in your Sites folder (in your home folder) can be browsed at http://your.computer.address/~yourusername/
Use your short user name, and include the ending slash (/).
Pages you put on your hard disk in Library/WebServer/Documents can be browsed at http://your.computer.address
To find your computer's address, look at the bottom of the Sharing pane of System Preferences.
To learn more, use a browser to open index.html in your Sites folder or look in /Library/WebServer/Documents/Manual.
This document contains information from Help Center, the help system included with your computer."
When u try to go to http://your.computer.address/~yourusername/ it opens a page that says forbidden-You don't have permission to access /~lochtefeldm/ on this server
Why does it keep saying this and how do i fix it?

This was a big problem back with beginning of Tiger or Leopard, don't remember which.
You need to have a file called "lochtefeldm.conf"
The above file needs to be in the /etc folder.
Click on the go button at the top and then down to "Go to folder"..
Type in /etc and then open that folder.
In the etc folder you will find "Apache2" folder and open that.
Inside there you will find a folder called users.
I am assuming at this point that you don't have a file in there call "lochtefeldm.conf"
If you don't have the file, create one using text edit and put in this info.
<Directory "/Users/lochtefeldm/Sites/">
Options Indexes MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
Save the above text edit file as lochtefeldm.conf and put it in the users folder from the path above.
You will need to authenticate to move the new file you just created to the users folder.
Now your Web Sharing should work...
For some reason mine was missing also. I am going to have to check the rest of my computers to see if Snow Leopard just put in a blank folder...

    Hi there,
You need to get a domain yourself.

  • Is anyone here using RAGE to host your website?

They are a software company that is now hosting websites.
I've been looking at this company for my website, they say they work with iweb users, I never heard of them before and was wondering if anyone has any opinion.
I been hosting my website with mobileme for over two years but heard that MobileMe is for personal websites only and shouldn’t be used to host an serious website.
    Any thoughts?

@Old Toad: Thanks for the compliment on our software. It is very much appreciated and I am glad you like it.
We have actually been doing web hosting for over 10 years, just not under the RAGE brand.
@cake artist: Most web hosts will work with iWeb without any problems. Web hosting is very standard. It usually does not matter who you go with unless you require something special which most iWeb sites won't. The biggest advantage we offer is we are Mac guys who know iWeb very well and can help with any iWeb related problems. We can also guarantee 100% compatibility with our free iWeb SEO Tool so you only have to deal with one company if you have any issues.
We can offer phone support if you really need it, but we have found that providing step by step help over email is much more effective.
Anyways, just wanted to clarify and hope this helps!

  • Domain Name & Hosting the Website

I have made a website for an event I am planning in March. Is there a place on Apple where I can purchase my domain name and host it there? or should I be using another place? I need it to be as cheap as possible...but still be a good place for hosting my website.
    Ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Is there a place on Apple where I can purchase my domain name and host it there?
No. Apple only provides hosting via MobileMe. If you want to purchase a domain name then go to a domain name provider like HostExcellence.com or GoDaddy.com. Both offer domain names and hosting services if you'd like to keep them all together.
If you host on MMe these AD topics and Apple documents will give you info on how to set it up:

  • Security question about hosting multple websites at ~/Sites

Hi All, I wish to host multiple websites from my server running Mac OS X Server 10.4. I just wanted to know if there are any security risks involved in having sites running from the path ~/Sites. ie /Users/username/Sites/ I am running the machine as a standalone server with port forwarding from my router. Other: Running PHP 4 and MySQL 4 aswell. Is this the wrong way to host sites? If so, do you have any suggestions for other paths that may be more secure? Would it be more secure to host them from the default location /Library/WebServer/Documents? I have FTP set up so that authenticated users see home directory only and have set up users home directories as /Users/username/Sites in the workgroup manager. Is there a better way to set this whole thing up? Am I screwing it from the start? Thanks in advance...

If the user directories are just for hosting sites, the user's won't be using them to store their stuff with an expectations of privacy, there's no inherent insecurity doing it this way. If the users were using their home directories, then it may come as a shock that the read and browse permissions have to be turned on so that the web server can get to the Sites folder to serve pages.
MySQL is a popular database. I would venture to say that most database insecurity is the fault of the DBA, not the database itself.
PHP scripts are listed in the security ezines a lot. I don't know whether PHP is inherently insecure, so simple that people who really don't know how to program can program with it or other reasons.
OSX server isn't an OS I'd trust exposed to the Internet. Apple's done things that make it at least very hard, if not impossible (I haven't really sat down and fought it) to lock it down well.

No its not against the T&Cs, but you have to remember that your public IP address is dynamic, and you will have to use a DDNS service like DynDNS to keep your hostname updated with your IP address.
I run a webserver on an ADSL connection, as shown in my signature below, and here

Your website must not be of a commercial nature, as that would be against the BT Residential Broadband T&Cs.
You also need to be aware of any security vulnerabilities that you may introduce to your network. If you can keep things simple, and avoid scripting and ASP/PHP, that will help a lot, as most attacks are against these services, if not fully secured.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

If you have the full Creative Cloud, Business Catalyst web hosting (up to 5 sites) is available. However I am not sure if any of that is available to an individual app/product subscription.
Hopefully a dev member can confirm.
Which subscription option do you have?

  • XServe Performance Questions: Will it help me host a website full of videos

    Hello,
I am thinking about buying a mac server (xServe) to host a website full of books, text, images and videos freely available all around the world.
My concern is that I am not sure if buying an xServe (basic configuration) will help me do that. I am afraid the xServe performance will not be able to do all this task. According to you xServe and Mac OS X Server? Is it possible.
Lets say I posty a video, 720x480, MPEG-4 or DivX or Quicktime format, 1000kbps video quality of around 20 minutes each in many pages of my website, if using a xServe, how many people approximately around the world will be able to stream the same video at the same time? I know that streaming videos thoghout the Internet does need a **** of an equipment, so that is why I must know more about xServe great performance, cons and pros.
Should I buy an xServe if I want to do this? I have also add another idea. By website could be hosted by my own xServe (basic configuration), but I could depend on Google Video, YouTube and specially Stage6.com to hosty my videos on their servers and then I can just put the video embed on my webpage and my xServe won`t need to ''worry'' hosting these videos. Is that a good idea?
I am new to this thing, so I am asking for your help. Another thing that concers me is, can I have 2 or 3 external hard drives (from 250GB to 500GB) connected to the server though USB or Firewire and host some files of my website there?
Now, should I buy a Mac Pro, a 24'' inch iMac or a xServe to host that site? Which one do you think will do the job better?
Thank you for helping me reading this and hope you can help me. Sorry for the long lost. Its just that buying an xServe may be a huge thing to do and I need to know if its a good choice.
    GB
    iMac 20" - Intel Core Duo 2GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 128MB ATi Radeon X1600, 2.5TB of HDs   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Internet High-Speed connection - 10MB

Your problem is going to be bandwidth more than server capacity.
The XServe can handle many simltaneous streams, but if your network connection is too small you're going to fill that pipe way before the server runs out of horsepower.
You say you're using 1000kbps video streams (which is very high...?). At that rate you need to colocate your server(s?) at a commercial datacenter where you can get a gigabit ethernet connection to the network. A single server won't be able to saturate a gigabit ethernet link, but you should be able to manage several hundred megabits, depending on the data flows.
As for storage, forget FireWire or USB. They're not up to the task. XServe RAID would be my suggestion. At those kinds of file sizes you'll be relying on disk performance a lot, so throttling all your data through a USB or FireWire bus is just asking for trouble.

  • Why can't I set up POP/IMAP emails for my Muse website in Business Catalyst? I don't have the option 'use this service for email as well as hosting the website' under Advanced options

Why can't I set up POP/IMAP emails for my Muse website in Business Catalyst? I don't have the option 'use this service for email as well as hosting the website' under Advanced options.
Is this due to my Hosting Plan? Appreciate any answers.

Your site is a CCM site which is on a WebBasics plan (This plan does not provide hosted emails on Business Catalyst).
If you want to create email addresses on this site, you would need to setup your email server elsewhere and configure the MX records on your site to point to that external mail server.
If you want to use Business Catalyst's hosted email services you would need to use a WebBasics+ or higher siteplan. To upgrade your CCM free site, Access your site's admin area  -> Site Management -> Upgrade Now -> choose the desired site plan and billing frequency -> Add personal and credit card details -> Submit.
Please refer this article about setting up email accounts on your BC site: http://docs.businesscatalyst.com/user-manual#!/site-settings/email-users

  • How do I set up my OSX Leopard Server to host a website?, how do I set up my OSX Leopard Server to host a website?

I own a small video game store and want to host my own website since I really don't want to spend the money on a hosting plan. I have a old G5 with OS X Leopard Server installed and have spent many countless hours reading tutorials on how to set it up, but none of them simply tell me what exactly to do. I have a very good knowledge of IT and didn't expect to have this much trouble.
I would like to set up the server to host the website, and also have it be able to do email as well (have a email address like [email protected])
I bought a domain from godaddy (www.g4uoc.com) , Have my G5 OSX Leopard Server up and running, have my website all built and ready to go, but I don't know how to set anything up. Can someone help me out at all?

There are numerous walkthroughs and tutorials on this, I'm surprised you couldn't find something.
    Short answer:
    1) dump your web content (HTML files, images, etc.) into /Library/WebServer/Documents
    2) Configure your router to forward connections on port 80 to your server (the specifics will vary depending on your router make/model)
    3) Use GoDaddy's web portal to setup www.g4uoc.com to map to your router's public address.
You're done. Remote users will lookup www.g4uoc.com on GoDaddy's servers and will get your router's public address. When they try to connect the router will forward the connection to your server which will serve the matching request from /Library/WebServer/Documents/

  • How do I host a website with server?

How do I host a website with server?

Set up public DNS with a DNS provider pointing to your public static IP address, set up private DNS on your local network (OS X Server requires this) using Server.app DNS services, set up port-forwarding for TCP port 80 and TCP port 443 at your firewall-gateway from your public static IP address through NAT to your private static IP address, establish one or more virtual hosts (web sites) within the web setup of Server.app, and populate the web directories with the contents you wish to serve.  Those contents will be the text data and/or images or other data you wish to serve, and may be a web content management system that can store and retrieve the web content and manage the links among pages, the theming and the rest of the baggage.
It's often easier and cheaper for a small-scale entity or a low-traffic web site to be hosted by any of various web-hosting providers.  They provider deals with keeping the content management system and the servers current, having enough server and network bandwidth to serve the contents to the Internet, and you can concentrate on the web site contents.
