Hosting for video podcast

I intend to create a video podcast (1 or 2, 15-minutes episodes/month). My shortlist for the hosting service is:
www.Podbean.com
www.Libsyn.com
and www.typepad.com
Any positive/negative experiences with any of the three mentioned above? Thanks.

Can't say I know much about any of the three you listed, theHman, but I would definitely back up *David Tames* in saying that I've heard/seen good things about blip.tv -- they would be especially good for you because they will auto-generate a podcast feed for you (just be sure that if you submit your feed to the iTMS, that you pick the version that has the QuickTime format in it, and not the Flash video format which is the default).
GoDaddy.com . . . ugh. Quite a few of the questions/complaints that we get on this board are rooted in problems with their hosting service, either because of outages or because they don't support some file types. Personally, I would stay away from them.
Good Luck.

  • Searching for video podcasts

How do I search for video podcasts in the Itunes store?

You could always try a manual ping of the iTMS servers...enter this in your browser's URL field adding your podcast's ID number at the end:
    https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=
Or this adding your podcast feed's URL at the end:
    https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?feedURL=
I know that this is a good way to get the iTMS to refresh your episode listing...not totally sure it will help the keyword issue.

  • Artwork for Video Podcasts

Is there any way to force iTunes to show embeded artwork for video podcasts in the podcast list? Right now it shows little previews of a random frame of the latest episode. Not only is that uninformative — makes it difficult to find a particular podcast, — but also bad for my OCD.
    Thanks.

Well, that's the thing: all the video podcasts in my collection have artwork assigned when I look them up in iTunes Store. For example: the official Apple Keynotes podcast, Diggnation, Tekzilla, etc. But in iTunes, they — and every other video podcast — all show a still frame instead of artwork.
All the audio podcasts in my collection display their respective artwork just fine.

  • Applications for Video Podcasts?

I have a client who wants thier material available for video Ipods, they want the videos available to be downloaded worldwide. Are their apps out there that take the videos I create and create the code needed to publish at I Tunes? I been researching this a bit, seems very complicated. Thanks

Michael, iLife will do it for you. However, if you use the default settings to encode your videos, the files will be huge.
You can use QuickTime Pro to encode for video podcasts. Again, the default settings will work fine, but the file size will be huge.
There are a few things you must set correctly in QT for the resulting video to play on the video iPod.
First, to use your own settings, you must use QT Pro 7.0.3 (not 7.0.4, there's a bug in 7.0.4 that keeps the encoded file from playing on the iPod).
Next, you must use the "Baseline" setting. The "Baseline" setting can only be found by doing the following:
Use the Movie to MPEG-4 setting
    File format: MP4
    Video format: H.264
This will give a "Video Option" button. Change to "Baseline" only.
That's the key. After that, any settings can be used, such as data rate, frame rate, etc.
Depending on the content of your video, these settings will vary. If there's more motion, you'll need a higher frame rate and higher data rate.
Here's a starting point. If you have Final Cut Express:
    1) Set Gamma to 0.9 [necessary for Windows displays, which are darker]
    2) De-interlace [I use the lower field]
    3) Sharpen at 30 [H.264 softens, so I sharpen to compensate]
    4) Color Correct [I use auto settings for white, mid and black. This adds contrast and especially black]
    In QuickTime 7.0.3:
Use the Movie to MPEG-4 setting
    File format: MP4
    Video format: H.264
This will give a "Video Option" button. Change to "Baseline" only.
    Encoding mode best quality (multi-pass)
Set Data Rate 80, Image size 320x240 QVGA, Frame Rate 15, Key Frame Automatic.
    Click Audio
Audio Format AAC-LC (Music), data rate 48, channels mono, Sample rate 44.100, encoding quality Best.
Do this on a typical one minute clip and adjust the frame rate up if the motion seems too jumpy, but if you do, you'll also need to increase the data rate. If the video seems blotchy, set the data rate higher. If you have stereo music, set it at stereo, but set the audio data rate to 96 then.
These settings should give a good base for a start.
There are other applications to encode video for the iPod, some free, some costing hundreds of $$. I have tested many of them. The one I use is QuickTime Pro. It is not fast, but it does make the best quality videos.
Hope this answers your question, Michael.

  • IMovie for video podcasting?

Couple questions for using iMovie HD ver. 5.0.2 for video podcasting...
    1) It is possible? Is there a direct function that exports to one of the formats required for video podcasting?
    2) Is there an export format that allows people WITHOUT VIDEO iPods to hear the audio portion of the same file..
ie. an MP4 or something, that people with video iPods can WATCh...but if downloaded by people with regular iPods, can listen to?
(I already have an audio podcast, so save me the trouble of making two separate files, one video+audio and one just audio).
    Thanks!

    File>>Share>>Expert Settings>>Movie to iPod
.. is supported in iM6, booger posted in iM5 forum...
    get iSquint
export your project as QT/FullQuality, drag'n drop into iSquint, let it do the job...
iPod movies are mainly mpeg4 with some specific settings (res, max bitrates etc); iSquint does all that, and has a superior mpeg4 compressor then QT... just to mention that, Throw...

  • Settings for Video Podcast?

I don't have a video iPod, but a friend told me that my video didn't sync with her new iPod Nano via iTunes. Trying to figure out if there's something wrong with the encoding.
I read in the new video capable iPod specs...
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
In iMovie HS '06, I have the following settings... (Share ->iPod isn't high enough quality for what I need).
    Export - > Quicktime > Expert Settings > Options >
    Video Settings...
    H.264
    Frame rate 29.97
    Key Frames Auto
    check frame reordering
    Data Rate - Restrict to 1536 kb/s (equal to 1.5 mb/s)
    Compressor - High & Multi-Pass
    Filter... no changes
    Size...
    Custom - 640 x 320 **
** (Video is 16 x 9, should I be going with 640 x 480 and preserve with letterboxing? Some iTunes videos are not letterboxed, though).
Check - Deinterlace Source Video (to get rid of that venetian blind effect).
    Sounds...
AAC, Best, limit to 128 kb/s
Anything I'm doing wrong here to get a good video podcast that will sync with an iPod?
    Thanks,
    Tom.

Yeah, good idea. Thanks for the reply I didn't think of Garage Band as supporting video, though. I'll check it out.
What I did do in the meantime is try iMovie '08. I was shying away from it since it didn't have as many features as iMovie HD. But it does add some nice features... including exporting to iTunes in one shot. And sure enough, a video pops up in iTunes encoded exactly like the music videos I got from the iTunes store. So, there's no reason it shouldn't work perfectly.
The only difference is the m4v extension vs. the mov extension. I don't think that matters since both are compatible with the iPod and QuickTime.
It looks like I had a lot of the settings, if not all correct. However, I think the short answer is use iMovie 08, export to iTunes.

  • Thumbnails for video podcasts?

I have a 2 year old son. He watches the Sesame Street video podcasts on his iPad. Obviously, he cannot read yet, so he selects the podcasts he wants to watch based on the video thumbnails. He has been doing this on the Video app.
Unfortunately, I have made the mistake of upgrading to iOS 7, and the podcasts are no longer detected by the Video app. He now has to watch using the Podcast app - which does not show thumbnails!! So I have a frustrated child, who now clicks on 100 different videos trying to find the one he wants to watch. It's either downgrade the iOS, or he has to start learning how to read (I've tried. It's not easy at 2 years old - as he has just started learning the sounds for A - J).
OR is there a way to display thumbnails on the podcast app?

    Hi Sally, same problem here.
As Mavericks is my first Apple OS I can't help myself much....
    What I've found out so far;
    Mp4 does work.
Perian codec used to do the trick supposedly even when Quicktime is not the default player, unfortunately it is not supported anymore, no info if a potential replacement fixes thumbs issue.
Thumbsup didn't work for me, maybe also a Mavericks issue if someone knows ? Drag & drop solutions where additional files are created won't help me much anyway as I'm trying to fix a 1000+ horror movie library and I refuse to use crap like Plex. What we need is something like Babelsoft Media Preview, I use it on Win7 it's perfect
    Any help is welcome !

  • Turn off display for Video Podcast...?

    Howdy,
I use an iPhone 4 with the most recent software...
Is it possible to turn off the display while running a video podcast?
With earlier iPhones it worked fine, but the old method does not work, and I have been unable to find a method that will do this.
    Thanks for any help,
    A.C.

with the following command running in a commandprompt window you can turn your screen black untill you click or type something.
You can easily transform this in a script which runs every 10minutes in scheduled tasks
    %systemroot%\system32\scrnsave.scr /s
    GPO scheduled tasks
I've added a link to technet article about GPO and scheduled tasks

  • Charging for video podcast

I want to charge $1.99 for people to download my video podcasts. How do I do this?

One of the problems that I understand iTunes does not really want to deal with is intelectual copyright infringement. Many people are creating podcasts and they do not have the proper authorizations (legaly speaking) to charge for the podcasts.
If you are using music that you did not create yourself then you need permission to use it, especially if you charge for it.
If people other than yourself are in the podcast then you need have permission to use them in your cast, if you are to be paid for it.
There are a lot of legal issues involved that Apple has to take into consideration and the two I listed are huge for a corporation such as Apple. A law suit for copyright infringement or assisting in infringement could cost them dearly.
May not have helped you any but maybe it explaines a little what is going on.

  • Mini player for video podcasts? Where did it go?

I am having problems with the newest version of iTunes (11.1.2). Before, when I wanted to relegate a video podcast to the corner of my screen where it was viewable but didn't take up all of my screen space, I would click on the small rectangular miniplayer icon and get that - a small version of the video playing in the upper left hand corner of my screen.
Now if I double-click on a video podcast to launch it  it takes up much of the screen. Clicking on the miniplayer in that window goes to the grey rectangular miniplayer used for music, and in fact starts playing either a radio station (where did that come from?) or some other music. Not even the sound from the video podcast. Reverting back to the square shaped miniplayer with the program icon doesn't change that. There doesn't seem to be a way of playing a video podcast in a small window. The right button on top switches between full screen view and most-of-the-screen view. In older versions of iTunes that used to evoke the miniplayer, and video podcasts would shrink to a small view in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
Is there any way to solve this problem? I often want to watch video podcasts while also doing something else and the current screen-hogging doesn’t let me do that.
MacBook Pro 13" late 2009 running OSX 10.6.8. iTunes 11.1.2

Well, upgrading to ITunes 11.1.3 didn't solve the problem. It helped, in the sense that now I can get the square mini player and a still image of the video podcast, and the sound from the podcast works, but the image doesn't move.
I tried trashing the iTunes Preferences, hoping perhaps one was corrupt, but that didn't solve the problem either. I am now wondering if this is an OS glitch. While iTunes runs on OSX 10.6.8 (SL), which is what I use, it has problems, which perhaps don't appear in more recent OSs.
Can anyone confirm that on a machine running OSX 10.6.8 he/she has iTunes 11.1.3 with the mini player successfully running video podcasts?
    thanks

  • Can't submit picture for video podcast in itunes

When I first got my video podcast up, it had a picture. Since I changed it a couple of times, now all I see is the black box in the itunes window. I get the question mark in the submit window when trying to submit again.
The help section off iweb says to, "drag a picture into the submit window" when submiting a podcast to itunes. That is impossible as far as I can see.
How do I update my artwork for my itunes store podcast?
    http://rss.mac.com/pskunk/iWeb/Site/Podcast/rss.xml

    Hi,
Find the XML file iWeb makes, open it up in a text editor and change the entry for image and reference a small 300x300 image of your choosing which is located somewhere on your webspace.
Look at the podcasting how to from Apple. If you're on Dotmac, your XML file is published in a fork from iWeb called RSS.
Copy the file and amend it each time you upload. I'm afraid that seems to be the only way to do it.
PLEASE APPLE, LET US CHOOSE OUR OWN THUMNAIL IMAGES FOR ITUNES

  • Charging for Video Podcasts

    Hi.
I am investigating the possibility of making video content from an educational company available on iTMS as video podcasts. Is it possible to charge people to access these video podcasts?
We already charge people a small fee for sending out the content on DVD. We could reduce this cost if the content could be downloaded from the iTMS.
    Thanks for your help.
    James

As it exists today, pay-to-listen/view podcasts are not supported in iTMS. Rush Limbaugh seems to have a working model, but you can't go through iTMS to subscribe and I presume (but will likely never find out for myself) that iTunes won't work as a podcast aggregator for that type of setup.
In the future, well, things may change. But terms of service prohibit speculative discussion of future changes in Apple's product mix.

  • Alternative to iTunes for video Podcasts?

Is there an alternative App for downloading and organising Video Podcasts? I don't want to watch the on my iPod and don't want them cluttering up my organised iTunes library. However I would like to view them in FrontRow ffrom time to time.
iPodderX does seem to work with Video Podcasts yet.
Failing that does anyone have a script or Automator action to remove to video from iTunes Library folder and move it into a subfolder of my Movies folder?

You can do it from the Finder, just open Music -> iTunes -> iTunes Music -> Podcasts and you'll see the folder with your videocasts in it. Drag it to your Movies folder.
Now you can find them and watch them with anything you want, like QuickTime.

  • Coverflow artwork for video podcasts

How do you set the artwork for a video podcast so it will show within the itunes library? I'm not talking about the end user setting the artwork but the podcast creator. Seems that itunes uses the first frame of video as a default but I have seen other video podcasts have a specific picture, not the first frame of video, as their artwork. Example, subscribe to Creative Cows Final Cut Pro Podcast and there is a picture in your podcast library.
    Here is my xml file
    http://www.ci.lakeville.mn.us/podcasts/meetings/podcast.xml
I use Lemonz Dream's "Podcast Maker" to create the xml files.

No bites on this one yet? . . . Okay, I'll have a go.
So what you want to do is set the artwork for your podcast . . . Fairly easily done, but you first need to understand something about artwork for your podcast FILE versus artwork for your feed XML. (They are two completely separate things!) In the case of what you want, your XML code (and the artwork linked therein) doesn't matter because it doesn't affect the podcast file once it has been put into a podcatcher of some sort (e.g. iTunes). The artwork from your XML is only really of use to the iTMS and sundry web readers. So, have no worries about what method/program you are using to create your code or the validity of your file.
To set/change an individual episode's artwork you actually have to edit the .mov (or whatever) file. Hold on - that's not as scary as it may sound. First, do you already have the artwork that you want to use? Or do you want to capture a "good" frame from your video and use that? If you already have artwork, awesome. If you want to use a certain frame from your video, all that you need to do is play your video and freeze it on the desired frame and take a screen capture. (To take a screen cap, use Print Screen or Alt+Print Screen on a PC; or Command-Shift-3 or Command-Shift-4 on a Mac -- crop it if needed, and save the file as a jpeg/gif.)
After you have your desired artwork lined up, all you need to do is open your .mov in iTunes. Right- or Ctrl-click on the file, and select the option "Get Info." A window should come up - the last tab will say "artwork." Select the artwork tab, select and delete the pre-fab iTunes issue artwork, and then click "add." This will allow you to select the file of your desired artwork. After you've added the artwork, click "okay." Your file has been successfully modified, and is now ready to be uploaded!
And ta-da, when someone downloads your podcast file, the artwork will show up when they play the file (or in coverflow). Why? Because the artwork is now part your video file, and it is included in the download of your podcast.
More info, and possibly less confusion, about what is going on with this topic can be found here. (When you're reading it, just replace "MP3" with "MOV" in your head.)

Where do you insert artwork for avatar in Garageband. When I publish to iWeb there is a default podcast avatar. So when I submit to iTunes I have no picture like the others do but a default podcast icon.
