Hostname configurations for rac install
Is there any note which shows restrictions /recommendations for hostname configuration outlined by oracle to install a 2 node cluster with SCAN features enabled.
with any Oracle applications that would reference this Oracle RAC server ?
The applications of most concern are Oracle GRID,SQL*NET, ODBC,SIEBEL UCM,SIEBEL CRM
Simply comply to RFC 952 and use FQDN.
For hostname resolution, you need to use DNS (preferably), but +/etc/hosts+ can also be used (works fine, but not recommended for robustness).

After adding a logical standby database through Grid Control for a RAC database, I noticed sometime later the Data Guard configuration disappeared from Grid Control. Not sure why but it is gone. I did notice that something went wrong with the standby creation but i did not get much feedback from Grid Control. The last thing I did was to view the configuration, see output below.

Add standby database
Create a new logical standby database
Perform a live backup of the primary database
Specify backup directory for staging area
Specify standby database name and Oracle home location
Specify file location staging area on standby node
At the end am presented with a review of the selected options and then the standby database is created
Has any body come across a similar issue?
Thanks,Any resolution on this?
I just created a Logical Standby database and I'm getting the same warning (WARNING: No credentials available for target ...) when I do a 'Verify Configuration' from the Data Guard page.
Everything else seems to be working fine. Logs are being applied, etc.
I can't figure out what credentials its looking for. -
Solution manager configuration for EHP4 install (Product Version Problem)
Hi guys!
I'm new on SAP and SDN is a help all days and this time i really need some help from you guys!
Im installing EHP 4 and need the XML Stack file, so i go to the solution manager to generating them. But after configuring the logical components, make the associations, etc. on create maintenence transaction, the product version dropdownlist is empty...
It is configured but it dont appears... Anyone had this problem before and could give me some help!
I will appreciate that!
My regards,Hi,
In SMSY, the system should have product version as SAP ERP 6.0.
Next the logical component created for ECC Server should also reflect this version.
The solution you create in DWSP should include this logical component via the Solution Landscape definition. Here again the logical component should show the product version.
If all above are in place, the MOPZ for the respective solution should have the product version list populated.

Tnsnames configuration for RAC and dataguard
Hi everyone,
I have an environment with RAC and dataguard (production is RAC, standby is single instance) and I was wondering what is the best way to configure the clients (since I have quite a few and I don't want to change their tnsnames if I need to failover to the standby database).
Now, I need to have both RAC nodes of course, the question is what I should do with the standby...
The problems are:
1. If I add the standby as another address, 1/3 of the connections will get to it and I don't think it's a good idea
2. I can disable the load_balance, but then all connections will go to the first node's listener
3. After a failover, if the RAC nodes are down, it will take a long time to connect (the servers will not respond and the client will wait for timeout if it tries to connect to the RAC nodes first, only after the timeout it will try the standby and succeed)
Any ideas and suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
LironHi Robert,
I agree that the standby should be up, but you have to admit that if it is down it should not delay connections to the primary...
About the DNS, it's not that I don't trust the SA, but this is an environment for a customer so it should be as independent as it can be. So the failover process will be easy and fast. I don't know if I can get DNS permissions, but that's a good idea...
A question that can be derived from this:
assuming that I use observer to have an automatic failover, how should I configure my TNS? If the standby will become the primary automatically, I have to configure the clients to connect to the activated standby automatically. With no DNS changes or anything manual.
I guess in this case, my best option will be with LOAD_BALANCE=off, some of the clients will have RAC-NODE1 as first address and some will have RAC-NODE2, the standby will be the last address and we'll suffer the timeout if the primary will be down when connecting to the activated standby.
If anyone has other ideas, it would be great.
Thanks,
Liron -

Your Hardware configuration for RAC.
Hi,
What would be the best hardware solution for your regarding RAC? or put in another way, what hardware configuraton you are using for your RAC?
regards,hi
As good as you could provide for your RAC. RAC could be built on simple
P IV machines having a shared storage and two NICs with 100Mb speed connected via low speed network.
If i would be using a 2 node RAC, i would use two 64-bit server class machines with 4G RAM each, high speed shared storage, and Nodes connected through GB speed NICs with fiber optics.
It would really give me a lot of satisfaction.

Where do I find rawio mentioned in "Best Practices: PreReqs for RAC instal"
Hello,
In the document "Best Practices: PreRequisites for Real Application Clusters Installation with SAN Storage", a pointer to http://otn.oracle.com/tech/linux/content.html is advised for the "rawio" utility.
Where can I find it? I really have no clue on where to find this tool on the website.
//magnusMagnus,
please check out the Oracle's linux projects at
http://oss.oracle.com/
specificaly the OCFS project
the Lib- AIO project might also shed some light.
OCFS allows you to experience near RAW IO performance, without the headache of managing RAW volumes.

11gr2 Rac Install: Stuck at the DNS SCAN portion.
Hi Guys, it's Xev.
Ok, I have followed his install guide to the dot. http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/oracle-db-11gr2-rac-installation-on-oel5-using-virtualbox.php#install_grid_infrastructure
During the Grid Infrastructure install portion, it's stops me and tells me that "No Locally adapter is defined" when I am right here, it won't let me past this point right below...
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/images/ol5-112-rac/47-grid-ssh-connectivity.jpg
Now, this install document, tells you to put the 3 SCAN Ip addresses in the /ect/hosts file and does not tell you that you need to install DNS on a server and configure it, or does he? The way he says it to
me just doesn't make sense.
My question is to only people that have actually installed 11gr2 RAC using VirtualBox and using oracle linux 5.8.
He says in the install document this right here, but some how i think he is just flat out wrong.
I quote from the install document,,,
If you are not using DNS, the "/etc/hosts" file must contain the following information.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
# Public
192.168.0.101 ol5-112-rac1.localdomain ol5-112-rac1
192.168.0.102 ol5-112-rac2.localdomain ol5-112-rac2
# Private
192.168.1.101 ol5-112-rac1-priv.localdomain ol5-112-rac1-priv
192.168.1.102 ol5-112-rac2-priv.localdomain ol5-112-rac2-priv
# Virtual
192.168.0.103 ol5-112-rac1-vip.localdomain ol5-112-rac1-vip
192.168.0.104 ol5-112-rac2-vip.localdomain ol5-112-rac2-vip
# SCAN
192.168.0.105 ol5-112-scan.localdomain ol5-112-scan
192.168.0.106 ol5-112-scan.localdomain ol5-112-scan
192.168.0.107 ol5-112-scan.localdomain ol5-112-scan
Note. The SCAN address should not really be defined in the hosts file. Instead is should be defined on the DNS to round-robin between 3 addresses on the same subnet as the public IPs. For this installation, we will compromise and use the hosts file. This is not possible if you are using 11.2.0.2 onward.
If you are using DNS, then only the first line needs to be present in the "/etc/hosts" file. The other entries are defined in the DNS, as described here. Having said that, I typically include all but the SCAN addresses..
END QUOTE.
So, Guys, what does he actually mean with this? MY Grid install fails when it's trying to resolved the scan. DO I need to install DNS like he gives in the link above, OR can the install work with the SCAN in the /ect/hosts file? I Personally think this is just wrong, and you have to have DNS working 3 ip round-robin for the SCAN to work.
Please only reply to this thread if you have actually successfully installled 11rg2 Rac (11.0.1) on Oracle Linux 5.8 using VirtualBox, or actually know where i am going wrong by your own experience, not just goggle searching.....but you got it to work....
I am begging on my knees for help with this, since I have been at this for weeks now.
If you help me through this, I'll be your friend

Is Unix Cluster is Pre-requisite for RAC
Hi ,
Can anyone please clarify whether for the setup of RAC , does the Unix need to be in clusters?. Is it the pre-requisite for rac installing.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
HussainHi Hussain,
No, you don't need another OS cluster, only RAC, but you can use another clusterware with RAC (eg. SUN Cluster and others).
I recommend to you read http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b28759/toc.htm

Urgent help needed in configuring X1151A for RAC cluster
for RAC requirements I have to configure this card to use the interface name of ce1 but I have tried changing slots and puting /etc/hostname.ce1 file out there but it fails .. it always comes up as ce0.
my question is : How can I cofigure this card to come up as ce1 ? in the other box I had to do nothing .. i just placed the /etc/hostname.ce1 file with hostname and it works perfect.
can you please email me a copy of your response at [email protected] ?
thanks
SamiLook for "ce" instances in the /etc/path_to_inst file. You'll need to change the lines so that the hardware path you want is "1".
Keep a backup and write down the pathname. You can give that path to a 'boot -a' prompt if anything bad happens.

HI,
For your home testing you might need a latest technology to get a smooth and fast installation. i7 processor might be the ideal with memory at least 8GB. if you're planning to have more than 3 VMs running at the same time than you need 12-16GB memory at least.
From my experience installing on vm and allocated memory 2.5GB each VM the installation could take 15-30minutes

When we try to start the listener say listener_I it throws following error:
