Hostname for Mac OS X Server

Hi,
I have a Mac OS X server 10.5 Leopard and I've installed it on my mac mini.
After installing i tried to go to system settings but it prompted me for my hostname, user name and password. I wasnt sure what hostname to enter though i have my user name and password with me.
I'm setting it up for my friend's office and he doesnt have any domain name attached to it. I googled hostname for mac os x server but they said i need to have a fully qualified domain name.
Can i ignore this hostname problem? Cause its just a home business my friend is running and he just need his ical server up and thats it.
thanks all for reading.

To strengthen Camelot's comments here, most everything in a modern network is dependent on the host name and on the associated DNS. Proper DNS (or proper static definitions) are a prerequisite; if the host name and the DNS or the static hosts pieces aren't configured and operating correctly, then you'll be chasing all sorts of problems. The host and DNS pieces are the foundation of network security, and most everything on a network these days eventually involves network security, hence...

  • What's the best FTP server software for Mac OS X Server?

What's the best FTP server software for Mac OS X Server?
We have looked at a few different applications out there (Rumpus, CrushFTP, etc...) and are wondering what the community feels.
Apples built -in isn't robust enough. We do need some advanced features (reporting, SFTP, a web interface would be nice etc...).
    Opinions?

    Hi
For me it has to be RumpusFTP Server:
    http://www.maxum.com/Rumpus/
It has a secure web interface - no need to open ports 20, 21. No need for dedicated FTP client software for uploading and downloading. Supports the most commonly used browsers. Multi-platform support and can be installed on a standard client OS.

  • No mobileme install for Mac OS X Server 10.5.4?

Is there no mobileme update for Mac OS X Server 10.5.4??? It doesn't show up in Software Update. The control panel still says .mac.
Should I worry about downloading and installing the standalone update? I'm just worried about my sync data getting messed up since my two other Macs have the mobileme 1.1 update installed.

I got it to work by doing the following
open your system preferences then click on dot mac, on that dot mac window it will prompt you there is an update available so click on that update button , this then launched the software updater for me. and then the mobile me update was there.

  • HT5218 Safari 5.1.5 for Mac OS X Server v10.6 is no longer available for downloading, where I can find it?

afari 5.1.5 for Mac OS X Server v10.6 is no longer available for downloading, where I can find it?

FWIW, Software Update Server on OS X Server 10.6 did occasionally corrupt itself.
If I had a case of that arise, I'd get a full backup, would shut off Software Update Server, apply the current OS X Server 10.6.8 combo update and the current and subsequent patches, then reset the Software Update Server caches and force a new download of everything, and then restart the Software Update Server.
Alternatively — and given what I've encountering with 10.6.8-vintage hardware failures in the last few months — I'd probably look to migrate to newer hardware and newer software.  Those disks are getting old, after all.
Software Update Server and Caching Server 2 on 10.9 have both been stable.
The Reposado open-source implementation of Software Update Server might provide you with an alternative approach, if Software Update Server is being recalcitrant and if you can't upgrade.

  • Photo Gallery Software for Mac OS X Server

I'm porting my Linux server infrastructure over to Mac OS X Server. I've successfully moved over my DNS, Mail and most of my web sites to Mac without a problem. However, the last website is causing me a bit of pain. In Linux I was using Gallery 2 (http://gallery.menalto.com/), but I'm not sure how to get this to work on Mac OS X. In particular there are a bunch of dependencies that I'm not sure exist in Mac (ffmpeg, etc.)
    * Is there an alternative photo gallery software that people use which may install/work better on the Mac? We have wiki and blog services in the Web Server Admin pane, but I don't see a photo gallery service.
    * Has anybody had success in using gallery2 over to the Mac? What dependencies were needed and how did you find them?
    Thanks,

  • Outlook for Mac and Exchange Server 2010

I am a customer of Office 365 and I am using it on my Mac. Unfortunately Outlook for Mac (version 15.6 150113) is not able to connect to my Exchange account. Tried to reinstall it many times and also reinstalled from zero the Yosemite OS X, but no way. I
try to make the automatic connection and it doesn't work, so I manually insert the server address but unfortunately it doesn't happen anything and the bullet on the left signs a yellow color indicating that it is not connected. I use the same information that
I use in the native "Mail" application where it works perfectly. I tried also other applications like foxmail and airmail 2, and using the same server and id they all work perfectly. Also Lynch is working great. Can somebody help me to solve this
"outlook for Mac and Exchange" problem?
    Thank you in advance

Hi Sylvain, Thank you for the attention. Hereafter the result of the test and sorry if it is in italian since my account is italian. I forgot to say that my exchange account is my Company's exchange server while office 365 is my personal account.

  • Exchange alternative for Mac Snow Leopard Server

I was wondering what are some good alternatives to Microsoft's Exchange service for use in the new Snow Leopard Server that will be coming out. I am aware that Snow Leopard Server offers open source for mail server, but I would like to go with an actual GUI interface with a third party software. Any suggestions would be great!

You will not be able to do any extensive management of Active Directory from with Mac OS X natively,
and considering the technology, it's best managed using the native Microsoft tools & technologies anyway. There are products that offer options for Mac management from/via AD - beyond what Apple provides and/or is possible by extending your schema, but that's _another matter entirely_.
"Closest thing" is really for you to decide, you will need to investigate the products and if they will meet your needs.
As I have stated, what we know will be available in & via Snow Leopard is what Apple has made known on its own preview pages.
If you needed to seriously know more you would have invested in a ADC Developer account and extensive testing but with the understanding you would be dealing with pre-release technology.
Past that, the two products that offer the most in terms of feature-set(s) are as I already noted:
    Kerio
    and
    Zimbra.
    Best of luck !

Could someone help me with the bellow please:
I have a Mac with outlook 2011 on it.
We have recently set up Exchange Server 2013, and all of the Windows Workstation just required the trusted root certificate to be installed and they were working.
However I have spent hours reading different forums trying to get this working on the Mac and no luck.
The auto discover does not work when setting up the exchange email, therefore I have also tried setting up manually but it still will not connect to the server.

    Hi,
where could I find the documentation/manuals for the Mac OS X Server (Mavericks).
A search at Apple's support web site did not lead to any results, I could not find any manuals at all cocernicng Mavericks.

Try this Apple page. Under the Documentation section is the OS X Server: Advanced Administration document which might help.

  • Filevault for MAC OS X Server

I'm looking into getting a MAC OS X Server and using filevault. I would like to use samba, turn on filevault, and map to the network drive on the clients (windows xp workstations). Could people tell me if they think it is safe and reliable? Also any problems backing up the encrypted data and restoring it? From what I've read so far on filevault it sounds like the security is good, in Panther there were some problems with loosing settings, application libraries, address books, and corrupting user directories. I have read that Tiger is supposed to have fixed these problems. My main concern is backing up documents, spreadsheets, etc. I just want to be as sure as possible that I can backup the data (encrypted) and restore it. I would like to know if the MAC OS X Server totally dies I could take the backup data to another MAC computer and be able to unencrypt the data?
Thanks for any help. It would be much appreciated.

  • Updating OpenSSL for Mac OS X Server 10.6.7 -- looking for a good walkthrough

Currently running version 0.9.8l... would like to update to the latest version.
There are a lot of tutorials on the net, can someone recommend one that works with Mac OS X Server 10.6.7? (Since many assume the desktop version, and I've noticed occasionally there are some differences.) I've downloaded Xcode 4.0.2, which I assume is required to build it.
    Thanks.

OK, so I followed the tutorial http://foodpicky.com/?p=99 and it compiled fine. Added /usr/local/ssl/bin to PATH. And now reports version 1.0.0.d.
But... Apache or at least phpinfo() reports that it's still using the old version.
How do I make Apache, and the OS in general, to use the new version?
    Thanks!

I installed the mac os x server 10.6 on my second hard drive and as I'm finishing up the installation process, it says the keychain was in error and must be reset. I hit reset and it takes me to the main log-in screen. I go to enter in the password and log-in name which is now MAC OS X Server main log-in screen and it keeps shaking meaning it's incorrect.

It would also be good if I could have guest access of restricted access that would only allow certain websites to work.

I use Firefox, becasue I never put in the time to learn how Safari controls temporary/permanent cookie storage.
Firefox also has a large selection of add-ons to prevent javascript running or "tracking links" inside web pages, etc.
