Hostname in terminal different to that of sharing prefs
Hi,
i have searched these forums but am unable to find a clear answer.
i have a fresh install of tiger 10.4 with the updates added to 10.4.5.
i am using pppoe to connect to the interent
in my sharing prefs pannel my computer name is set to
random.test.com
yet when i type hostname in the terminal i get:
visp.inabox.net
i tried setting the hostname=random.test.com in the hostconfig file...
that worked with hostname in terminal returning random.test.com
yet when i went to sharing prefs and enabled web sharing it still told me to type in http://visp.inabox.net
i typed in http://visp.inabox.net and nothing came up
i typed in http://random.test.com and the web server came up
why is sharing prefs holding on to the name visp.inabox.net?
where did visp.inabox.net come from in the first place?
where is the data stored? which config file?
i can't find the string visp.inabox.net anywhere!
visp.inabox.net isnt even a FQDN..... what the ****?

i have a freebsd box that doesnt have this trouble. it is just mac os x.

I have a sole i-pod and two pc's, used the instructions for "iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder" in the hope that I could synch my one i-pod between two different computers that are sharing the same library. Is it possible to have two seperate computers that only share an external hard drive (one wireless, one not) ? When I am looking at a shared library should it appear the same on both machines (ie: playlists/ purchased list etc)?
If it is moved correctly, playlists will display on both computers and it should be possible.
Close iTunes.
Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.
When prompted to create a new or open an existing iTunes library point iTunes to the iTunesLibrary.itl file on the external drive.
The entire library should now show up with all playlists and playcounts.
Do this on both computers.
Keep in mind that only one computer can access iTunes at a time, otherwise errors will occur when each computer attempts to write to or update the iTunesLibrary.itl file.
Syncing may work seemlessly with both computers, but honestly syncing is designed to work with one and only one computer. -
Sharing pref pane stopped working
When I first got my computer, it wasn't even in the system preferences, but I found it in Library>PrefPanes and installed it. I use this to use my wireless to connect my my xbox 360. I haven't had one for about a year now and just got a new one. I went to try to connect it and it didn't work. Then I went to my sys prefs and noticed that the sharing pref pane looked like this:
If there is a fix for this to where I won't have to reinstall osx, it would be awesome to know. Any help is much appreciated!

I suddenly saw that my hostname in the Terminal has changed to "unknown406c8f255bd7". I checked the Computer name under System Pref>>Sharing and its the correct one("ABC_Macbook_Pro"). I further checked the environment variable or used hostname command and i could see the unknown hostname "unknown406c8f255bd7" there.
When i try to change the hostname thru terminal, it gives me this error "hostname: sethostname: Operation not permitted".
I tried opening a new terminal window but it did not help.
I searched thru the existing forum discussions but could not find anything relevant.
Can someone tell me why the hostname under Sharing and environment variable have different values?
Thanks'bash' the default shell has a default prompt that gets your hostname by taking your IP address and doing a reverse DNS lookup and if the DNS server returns a value, it uses that value. If AND ONLY IF the DNS server does not return anything will your System Preferences -> Sharing -> Computer name.
So your DNS server has returned unknown406c8f255bd7 and bash is using it.
You have a few choices.
Get your DNS server to stop returning unknown406c8f255bd7
Change your bash prompt to use something else for your command prompt. Add the following to your .bash_profile or .bash_login or .profile (whichever one you happen to already have; if you do not have one of the above, then create your own .bash_profile using - nano .bash_profile)
PS1='$(networksetup -getcomputername):\W \u\$ '

I am trying to import songs to my new macbook pro from my old computer using home sharing. Both computers say that home sharing is now on but neither show up in each other's library menu. I am logged on with the same apple id for both computers. and both are on a stable wireless connection
Logging into itunes store on each machine wth different Apple IDs is OK Autorising each others machines with the other Apple ID is OK. This is completley separate from Home Sharing
For Home Sharing to work you need to
File > Home Sharing > Create Home Share.
You need to select one of the two Apple IDs you are using and ENTER THIS ON BOTH MACHINES WHEN CREATING THE HOME SHARE.
Home sharing will then work -
I have 2 iPhones sharing an apple ID (mine and my partner). we have just created separate ID's now that family sharing is available. but the partner's ID wouldn't let her update apps purchased on my ID! Help Please
This is happening to me also but only with certain apps. The message I get with the apps that won't update is "Update Unavailable with This Apple ID. This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled".

How to list all calendars that are shared to a specific user?

Using Exchange Management Shell/Powershell, I want to list all calendars that are shared to a specific user 'myuser'.
I have tried different approaches; list all calendars for all users and then figure out which ones are shared to 'myuser', list all mailboxfolders for 'myuser' with path 'calendar' and sort out the shared ones, ... No luck so far.

Illustrator's tabs are all in a different font that I can read.
I need to know how to change it so I can get back to a steady workflow.

I have tried loading 3 different cds that I recently purchased into Itunes. I click the import cd button and Itunes goes through the motion of copying and importing the cds, but the songs are not in my music library. I have searched everywhere to find where these cds might be, but to no avail. Could really use some help here. Never used to have this problem.
Are they in the relevant artist & album folders when you look via Windows Explorer. If so something may have gone wrong with the index of the Music playlist. Download the current iTunes Free Single of the Week. I know it sounds odd, but it should fix the problem.
If that doesn't work close iTunes and delete the hidden file sentinel from inside the main iTunes folder, then start iTunes again. It should run a consistency check when it starts up.

How can I have a Pages document that is shared with me under my Pages section and not open it with the link?
Try this.
Open the document and select and copy a few pages, say ten pages.
Open a new blank document and paste the pages you copied into that.
Save it with a new name.
Work on those new pages to see if the problem has disappeared.
If this helps, continue breaking up the large file in to smaller chunks and working on them
You can of course later reverse the process and merge the files into one new one.
This suggestion is based on my experiences with large Word files. Breaking it up in to smaller chunks does two things. First, if there is any corruption in the old file, the new copies might escape that. Second, the Mac is faster handling the smaller chunks. -
I want to add new songs to my ipod. When I set it up with itunes years ago I had a different computer that I no longer have. Now it will not let me add new songs to my ipod shuffle without erasing everything that is already on it. Help!!! Is there any way around this?
Yes, I was aware of this but the phrase "Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library." is what worries me. Will this eliminate my Notes, Calendar Events, etc or will it apply mostly just to the music?

Okay, so, I upgraded my iPod touch to iOS5. When I did that, I got everything back, but I'm missing a ton of album artwork and some of my music has the wrong artwork from completely different artists that I already had on my iPod. For example, I have some albums by the band Lacuna Coil. The album cover for the album Comalies is being shown as the album cover for my Marilyn Manson albums and my Combichrist albums. That's not the only album cover that's being repeated on different artists though. But also, a bunch of my album artwork just isn't there at all, period. It's gone. Now, before I got the iOS5 update, I would just hook my iPod up to iTunes, click on "Mollenstein's iPod" and click on "music" so I could just add the album artwork straight to the iPod because a lot of my music is not on the same computer, so it was just easier to do it that way. After this completely stupid iOS5 update, I can't do that. It will say it's syncing when I try to do it, but it will list off songs that it is updating that aren't even on the album I was trying to put the album artwork on. The album art for those songs didn't change, but neither did the one I was trying to change. About 2000+ of my songs are on my old PC that is a fossil and is slower than a fossil and it would take me hours and hours and hours and hours to fix the album artwork on it because it has an extremely old version of iTunes, so I can't hook my iPod directly to it (the fossil computer does not have access to the internet, so I can't update the iTunes). Therefore, I will have to get a flash drive, transfer music 2 gigs at a time to a different computer, fix the album covers, then sync to my iPod. I guess I can do that if I absolutely have to, but I was wondering if there was an easier way to do that or if I'm supposed to be able to sync album art directly to my iPod and the update is just making it completely ********. Please help, I'm frustrated, and I am too busy to have to mess with crap like this.I'm about to just go back to collecting CD's.
