Guys This is my first apple experience hence very basic knowledge.
I have a PowerPC G3 with MAC OSX 10.1.5
I need to resolve host name to IP
I located hosts file under /etc and tried to add the host name and ip address but I cannot save or override the hosts file.
I cannot change the file priviales as they are grayed out.
I currently logged in as admin user.
Please all the help will be appreciated.
Is there any other way?
I also followed the discussion on
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88158

thanks

I tried to follow the discuss at
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2017650&#2017650
this has added the entry to the hosts file but when i try to ping or lookup on the host name it still does not pickup from hosts file..
I checked around and looks like there needs to be further configuration on the lookupd...
if someone can show me light..

  • Help.  I don't have a host file for textedit anymore?

Hello everyone.  I just recently got my iMac.
My younger brother was messing with it, which I thought was fine.  After I got back onto the computer I accidentally pasted his latest clipboard item onto an email... apparently it was this:
    sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts
I know enough about osx to know that sudo is a command for terminal, but I'm a bit worried about what happened after I put the comman into terminal.
    It DOESN'T EXIST at all.
I don't know what could've happened and I don't really see why textedit would need a host file, but I was wondering if there was a way to correct the problem?  I know that host files are pretty important, but I'm not exactly sure for what (or what they even do since I'm guessing it's only to block websites).
Any advice?  Your help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm not sure what the file is supposed to be, but anyway to get it back/replace it would be amazing.
    Thanks in advance.

How...thoughtul of him.  I'm sure you're already thinking of ways to repay him for his efforts....
Anyway, it's a pretty easy fix.  In the Terminal, type or paste:
    sudo nano /etc/hosts
    Paste this into Nano:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1          localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1             localhost
    fe80::1%lo0          localhost
Then hit CTRL-X and Y to save when prompted.

  • HT201210 I have done all of the things on this list, to include editing the hosts file with no the same error each time (3194).  I am trying to restore my iphone 4 ios 6 to get it unlocked.  Diagnostics show no issue communicating with apple. Help.

I am trying to restore my iphone 4 ios 6 to acheive unlock.  hit restore and it unloads software, confirms with apple then displays the 3194 error.  I have turned off my virus scanner, unplugged all usb except for iphone, edited the hosts file and run diagnostics which showes communication with apple is fine.  What do I need to do to get my ipone to restore?

There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
    Delete ALL your email accounts.
    Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON.  Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery.

  • Need Help Setting up Hosts File (Leopard Clean Install)

Over the weekend, I did a clean install of a retail copy of Leopard. Yes I wiped my entire hard drive and re-installed. Today at work I need to configure a series of host file entries so my computer can recognize certain computers in my domain by name instead of by IP. I did a quick look for Netinfo Manager in Utilities and found it is not there. Where in Leopard do you go to make the Host file entries.
I know this is a newbie question, but thanks in advance.
    COlliff

You can go straight to the file and amend
In Finder select Go to Folder and type /etc
With TextEdit or similar you can add additional entries.

  • Event ID 1012 - There was an error while attempting to read the local hosts file

When I start my Computer after it has been turned off overnight (switched off at the Power supply) I get a Blue screen and have to reboot the PC. in the Event log it has this error: Event ID 1012 - DNS client events - There was an error while attempting
to read the local hosts file.
Once the PC has booted evrything is O.K. I can restart the PC with no problems, it only seems to happen if the PC has been switched off for a while.

After further Investigation it seems that this error is Not responsible for my Blue screening......I started my PC after leaving it off all night, and it started normally, but i still have this error in the Event Log - System.....I have searched the Technet
forums (and there is a lot of ID 1012 errors) but non relating to my problem....If anyone knows what is causing this error and how to fix it, i'd be Grateful....although it does not seem to affect the PC in any way that i can see.

Since Windows system uses separated user mode and kernel mode memory space, stop errors are always caused by kernel portion components, such as a third-party device drivers, backup software or anti-virus services (buggy services).
The system goes to a BSOD because there is some exceptions happened in the kernel (either the device driver errors or the service errors), and Windows implements this mechanism: When it detects some errors occur in the kernel, it will kill the box in case
some more severe damage happens. Then we get a blue screen or the system reboots (it depends on what the system settings are).
To troubleshoot this kind of kernel crash issue, we need to debug the crashed system dump. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum. A suggestion would be to contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) via telephone so that
a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your request. Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged call.
To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below:
    Microsoft - Help and Support
If you are outside the US please see
Microsoft Worldwide Home for regional support phone numbers.
Meantime we can try some available steps as a general troubleshoot.
    1. Please remove the antivirus and run the system with a period. If the issue does not occur, mainly focus on antivirus settings and compatibility.
    2. Disable Automatic Restart and see detail information on the blue screen.
1).Click Start, in the Start Search box enter sysdm.cpl.
2).Click the tab Advanced. Under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button.
    3). Uncheck “Automatically restart”.
4). On the drop-down menu “Write debugging information”, choose “Small memory dump”.
    5). Click OK.
When Blue Screen displays, you may find some useful information.

  • Working with virtual host & hosts files on a local network

I'm setting up a small local web and production server here in my office running Leopard.
I'm setting up virtual hosts for users on the network to review and comment on websites in development. Ideally they'd access it as:
    host1.webserver.local
    host2.webserver.local
    host3.webserver.local
Problem is, users on the network can see webserver.local just fine, but the subdomains need to be registered with hosts file on each computer.
Is there a way I can manage all computers hosts file easily? I was thinking of an SVN repository, but this still requires going to each computer to update the file.
Any suggestions here would be great.
    Thanks

  • Cannot get the hosts file to operate or change.

I have tried to every way I could find on the internet to change the hosts file on my Mac OS X 10.4.11 computer plus several newer macs that operate in my office. I was able to easily do it on the PC's but not on the Macs. I modified the /etc hosts file directly to no avail, modified it using the terminal commands and also tried using the NetInfo manager. I am NOT a tech guy, just a guy trying to get his computers to work properly. A tech company just changed our router to a Cisco ASA device which is why this change needs to be made, they did not know how to make the changes to the hosts files on a Mac. Everybody in the office loves our Macs so to not be able to get to our own website and webmail is frustrating. Here is what I changed the hosts file to:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    192.168.16.2 auctionbid.stoutauctions.com
    192.168.16.3 mail.stoutauctions.com
    192.168.16.3 smtp.stoutauctions.com
    192.168.16.4 stoutauctions.com
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
Is something else in the system I need to change to make this take effect? Is something set wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also if anyone knows of a reputable company that will do remote work on Macs, please let me know. I have a few things that I don't know how to do and would not be worth a trip to the middle of nowhere for a tech company so if they can do it remotely that would be great.
    Thanks!
    Greg

    Hmmm, the line after...
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    Should be...
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
Not sure if that is it or not.

In Mac OSX Leopard, you can use the command dnscacheutil -flushcache to flush the DNS resolver cache:

In Mac OSX versions 10.5.1 and before, the command lookupd -flushcache performed the same task:
    lookupd -flushcache

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (Hosts File Locked)

In OS X Lion 10.7, I had edited my Hosts File to prevent certain web-sites from loading and would like to access them again, however I have noticed that in the latest update of Mountain Lion 10.8.2 the "/private/etc/hosts" file is locked and cannot even be modified in terminal using vi, nano or pica.  Does anyone know a way around this?  I even tried logging into to the repair volume of OS X to try to no luck.  Has anyone been successful?

Okay, after a ton of researching terminal commands, I finally found the solution to my own question.
    1) First you need to log-in as the Root User in Terminal using the following command:
    sudo su -
    2) Then you need to remove the "sticky" lock assigned to the hosts file that prevents people from modifying it:
    chflags nouchg /private/etc/hosts
    3) Then you can edit the hosts file as per usual via the following command:
    sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
    "Control O" to Save
    "Control X" to Exit
    4) Then in Mountain Lion you should flush your cache to ensure the new hosts file is current:
    sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
    5) Go ahead and reapply the "sticky" lock so the hosts file doesn't modify itself:
    chflags uchg /private/etc/hosts
    I hope this helps!

  • How to change host file?

    Hi guys,
I would like to install 9iAS 9.0.2 Oracle Portal on my XP machine.
    Problem:
    My host like this:
    127.0.0.1 localhost
AND my computername contains an UNDERSCORE.
How can I change the hosts file? And how must it look like? I have no fix IP Adress at the moment.
    Thank you for help.
    cheers,
    Bernd

    in short...
You'll need a static IP address
your host file will look like
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    10.1.1.10 www.server.com www
where 10.1.1.10 is your static IP, and the www.server.com is the name for which you want to access your portal site.

  • Host file problem?

Hello, for sometime now, I have been researching how to fix my error code 3194 problem everytime I try to update my iPod. It gets through the "Extracting Software" process, then a window pops up saying the error code 3194 occured. I read on the trouble shooting page about something with hosts files. I went ahead and oppened mine and saw that there are two gs.apple.com lines. Another thread I was reading said to delete anything that points to gs.apple.com but I didn't know what "point to" means. Does that mean anything with gs.apple.com?
The two files exactly are: "
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
Do I delete both? One or the other? Neither?
    Please help.
    Thanks for all your time!

    > the only difference here is taht the disk is not local but a fileshare from another system.
The user running the database must have access to that share, not the user you're logged on with. That's a common "misunderstanding" in Windows. What you see is NOT what you get. The safe way on Windows is not using drive letters for network drives but UNC names.
If the database is running with the account "local system" it doesn't know drive "M:" and hence can't open the file. It even couldn't use an UNC name.
    So you have two options:
    - change the user running the MaxDb database kernel to a "real" user who's able to access a network share and use an UNC name instead of a drive letter to connect. The user must also have "act as part of the operating system" right.
    - copy the file locally

  • HOW TO have many HOST files directed to ONE host file?

    Hello:
I was wondering if it is possible to do the following:
If we have in our HOST file many elements, lets say: my host name, TOR configuration, block pages, etc, and I would like to create several files to fragment this information on those files and, in some way, creating a HOST file that gather all this other files? Let's see:
                                                      HOST
                                                          |
                                       |                  |                   |
HOST TOR  HOST PAGES   HOST X
                                                           |
                                                 |                       |
                                       PAGES A             PAGES B
    With:
HOST: the actual host file, en /etc/
HOST TOR: the host config for TOR.
HOST PAGES: a list of some pages we would like to block, control. The PAGES A are for something, the PAGES B, for other things.
    HOST X: etc.
So, all the host are different files, and I would like to connect them to HOST -the root-
With this, I could get a more ordered HOST file.
    Is this possible?
    Thank you.
EDIT: maybe with cat? I'm not sure, and don't want to screw my host file!

Thank you very much. I tried and it worked!
But I'm doing the backups of the old HOST files, trying to add the date and time, but I can't, could you help me please?
#Move old HOSTs to the backups folder
    mv /etc/host ~/myhost/backups/
#Rename it with the actual date and time
    dateTime = $(date +"%m-%d-%y | %T")
how to paste it the the host file??? I tried with mv, rename, and I can't
I would like something of the form:
    host | m-d-y | T
    Ex:
    host | 12-12-10 | 19:55:03
    host | 12-13-10 | 23:05:56
    Any suggestion?
    Thank you.

  • When I type .ssh root@10.0.02 it says host not recognized I'm unable to get in to known host file can not fix the problem.

When I open terminal and do sash [email protected] it says warning rsa key not recognized to go to known-hosts file which ican not grt into I have download pico but am not sure how to launch it or what I ave to do.

sibeen, please stop starting new posts when you are really just continuing the first post.  "Reply" to one of your existing posts when you are really just continuing the same question.  If I have not lost count, you have posted 3 times about this same ssh rsa host key issue, and Linc Davis and I have been trying to keep track of all the details, but with it spread out across multiple new posts, it is difficult.
I'm guessing as you again forgot to post the actual error (I'm starting to wonder if you are testing how well Linc and I can guess at your problem ).  Anyway, I'm guessing that you managed to delete the $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts file, and now when you try to ssh to 10.0.0.2 it wants to add the remote system's host rsa key into a newly created known_hosts file.
The authenticity of host '[10.0.0.2]:22([10.0.0.2]:22)' can't be established.
    RSA key fingerprint is xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
Generally the command ask if you want to do this, yes or no.  You type "yes" and your Mac memorizes the remote system's host rsa key.
If this is not the warning message you are seeing, then as Linc has requested, please post the exact error (feel free to mask put the actual key or usernames or IP addresses, but keep the words.
If you are still getting the original error from 3 posts ago, then I would not try editing $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts, and instead just delete the file, and when you get a message like I have posted above, answer it with "yes".
WIth respect to pico, Mac OS X already has pico installed, so there was  no need to download it from anywhere.  However, most people just use 'nano' which has essentially replaced 'pico' as an easy to use Terminal based text editor.  But like I said, I think you will be happier if you just delete the known_hosts file and get on with your ssh operations.
Finally, I think in your 2nd post you indicated you tried deleting a file that had a dash in the name (known-hosts) instead of an underscore (known_hosts).  If that was just a typo when you entered your post, and you were really getting you cannot delete a directory, then something is seriously wrong, or you accidentally allowed a space to be inserted between .ssh and known_hosts.  Personally, I'm going with you actually entered a space and the 'rm' command thought you wanted to delete the .ssh directory instead of $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts.  I could be wrong, but using copy and paste to post actual Terminal screen output as well as the command you entered would be very helpful to anyone trying to provide useful information.  In other words, help us help you.

  • Cannot use hosts file with 10.5.1

    Hi,
Not sure when this problem creeped in, I think it is since my upgrade to Leopard.
The problem is that whatever I put into my /etc/hosts file is not used. Restards, cache flushes do not help.
If I have in the hosts file
    xx.xx.xx.xx anotherHost
    nslookup anotherHost fails
What I think is the root cause is that the resolver is hardwired only to DNS and does not read the hosts file. Unfortunatelly I cannot find a way how to change the resolving order in Leopard. lookupd is gone and was replaced by what ?
    Reproducable on colleague's macbook.
    So short summary :
    * how do I make my resolver use hosts file
    * how do I control the lookup sequence of my resolver
    Regards,
    Georgi

As described by others NSLOOKUP looks up onto the name server not the host file
Samba instead would use your host file first then an NSLOOKUP then WINS and finally broadcast
So what kind of service do you want to use your host file for?

  • Problem editing hosts file in Snow Leopard

I am having trouble editing my hosts file in Snow Leopard. Well, I can edit it fine, but the changes seem to give no effect whatsoever.
My hosts file looks like so:
    # Host Database

    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
    127.0.0.1 localhost www.localhost.com
I cannot access localhost by entering '127.0.0.1' into my browser, nor can I access it by entering 'www.localhost.com'.
Firefox simply tells me either 'Unable to Connect' or 'The Connection was reset', respectively.
Is there something I am doing wrong?? I have been looking all over the internet all week and cannot see what I might be missing!
The only way I can connect to localhost is by visiting 'http://localhost:8888/'.
If it helps, I am running MAMP.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Never mind, I found out MAMP was using port 8888 instead of 80, so I reset it and now it works fine
