Hot back via OS or RMAN

Hi:
We are in the process of migrating from a 7.3.4 Oracle database to a 10g version.
On the legacy system we are using Sysback/6000 for a hot backup to tape calling before the backup of the tablespace alter tablespace [tablespace_name] begin backup and than writing this to tape followed with the end backup statement.
This has worked quite well (had to recover once and it worked!)
While implementing this same scenario on the new hardware including tape drive the backup performance is quite slow (approx. 6.5 Mb/s).
I have never used RMAN, is it difficult to set up, is it any faster? And if so, are the some documents on the net for setting this up?
Thanks....Albert

RMAN is definitely going to be more robust than the user managed process of doing a hot-backup. To help understand the concept & configuration of RMAN, you should read over Backup and Recovery Basics and Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide.
I'm not familiar with Sysback, so I don't know if RMAN is compatible with that product. However, if RMAN isn't compatible, you can consider Oracle Secure Backup which will provide a FREE alternative to Sysback as long as you are using it to protect one server and one attached tape drive.

  • Hot back up and archive mode with RMAN

    Just diving back into back up world...
    I know I can do a hot back up of the Database with no archivelog option not using RMAN.
    Just wonder if I can do it with RMAN with no Archivelog option?
    TIA

    Thanks. Without rman, you can do tablespace online
    backup, using start and finish as far as I remember.This is true only if ur database is in ARCHIVELOG MODE. If its not then the only way to back it up is cold backup by either RMAN or without. In short you can do HOT/online backup ONLY if your database is in ARCHIVELOG MODE.
    Now what u actually want tell us..

  • Schedule Hot backup via OEM

    Hello all,
    We have a realtively small system running Oracle 10G on Windows 2003 O/S. I've scheduled a full offiline (cold) backup of the whole db to run once weekly via OEM. Every night we run a script to do a 'logical' backup by EXPORTing the 2 main schemas in the DB out to .DMP files. However this now may not be enough to satisfy DB recovery requirements.
    Is there an easy way to schedule a 'Hot' backup via OEM, that could replace the EXPORT scripts mentioned above, or would we have to write an RMAN script to do this ?? The requirement is really to allow the database to be updateable whilst any daily backup is running. I realise that the DB needs to be in ARCHIVELOG mode for anything like this to work.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Shaun.

    hi,
    on the OEM main page, click on targets, you should see your databse there. click on the database and then on the maintenance tab.
    from here you can schedule jobs and you have the option to schedule a online rman backup of your database. However, to do an online backup your database needs to have archiving turned on. Is this the case as you currently carry out offline backups which might indicate that archiving is turned off.

    Once I deleted my music files can I get them back via I cloud? I have Itunes match on.

    I actually deleted my backup :-) That's the problem. But thanks.
    I've managed to get some back but via a slightly different method.
    Because the files weren't there, when I deleted them from my library they actually disappeared from the list.... So I created a new library (backed up my original one) and then synched that with Match so that all the files appeared. I'm just going through the ones I'm missing clicking 'download' and then when they're all back on my hard drive I'll revert to the previous Library which will hopefully pick up all of the recovered files.
    Bingo!

  • HT201109 When I download my Final Cut project onto a DVD 3-4 photos are continually repeated throughout the presentation. If played back via the computer there is no problem

    When I download my Final Cut pro project onto a DVD about 3-4 photos are continually repeated throught the presentation. If I play back via the computer this does not happen. It is the same photos repeated. I have taken loop off from view. Any assistance ?

    I have two projects one with DVD and photos and the other just photos. The DVD is 20 mins and the photos just 8 mins.
    I have tried to burn from the share dropdown menu  ( DVD ) in FCXP and also tried download to media browser then used DVD creator to produce the DVD but the problem exists with both actions. I deleted the repeated photos from the presentation but another 3-4 different photos repeat. I hope this makes some sense .

  • Playing midi back via Roland TD30 Module.....

    I can record my drum parts into Garageband via midi no problem at all....
    What I would like to do is to play them back via the module not the inbuilt GarageBand sounds....
    Is this possible and if so how doI do it?
    If not, what software would let me do this?
    Many thanks!!
    Using Macbook Pro with Garageband Version 10.0.2 Roland TD30 Drum Module and Roland UM One Interface
    OS is right uptodate

    A little bit of pre-configuring will allow you to do the things you need effectively.
    I'd suggest if you haven't already to open an environment window and create a new Multi-Instrument. Name it Triton and set it to the MIDI port it's connected to your computer on, and click in each of the 16 sub-channels in the multi-instrument to enable all 16 MIDI channels for the Triton.
    Now, back in the arrange page, create 16 tracks and assign each to subsequent Triton MIDI channels (quickest way to do this is in the top track, click-hold it and select "Triton -> Triton 1" to assign the first Triton MIDI channel to that track, then bang the "Create Track with Next Instrument" 15 times to easily create that. Save it as a template so it's always available, or maybe as your autoload song.
    Now, either load a MIDI file and choose the copy the current environment config for it, or drag the MIDI file to the arrange page.

  • I had to restore my IMac back via Time Machine because Mavericks keeps crashing

    I had to restore my IMac back via Time Machine because Mavericks keeps crashing on install, it gets down to less then one minute, and I get a white screen with the apple in the middle.  Now I have version 10.8.5, but if I try to download again it states that I need version 10.7. Now How do I get 10.7, and dowload Mavericks?? Help

    You shouldn't need 10.7. Something is messed up with the App Store.
    3 things you can try.
    1. - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
    - Quit the App Store
    - In Finder - Go>Go to folder...  (or Apple-shift-G)
    - Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
    - It will take you to a folder.  Delete com.apple.appstore
    - Launch the App Store.
    2. Try resetting the App Store.

    3. Spotlight – Re-index
    You can also try creating another admin user and see if you can download it there.

    please help!!!!!! i filled out a job application using adobe reader but i cannot send the file back via email because the file is protected with a lock. how do i unlock this file to send it?!!!!!!!!!

    Hi kevinv1987,
    It doesn't sound like the PDF was password protected (or Adobe Reader would prompt you for a password). Instead, it sounds like that file may be marked locked by your operating system. Are you on Mac OS or Windows? In either case, here are instructions for removing the lock icon from the file:
    Remove the Lock Icon from a Folder in Windows 7 (check Microsoft's website if you have a different version of Windows)
    On Mac OS, select the file in the Finder, and choose File > Get Info. Then, just deselect the Lock checkbox.
    Please let us know how it goes.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Back in time with rman ?

    Hi,
    I have a rman set of backups from an Oracle database. The database is ok, only the user wants to have that older stand of the data, so I must go back in time.
    The rman script to generate the backups is as follows:
    rman target sys/manager@EON1 catalog rman/rman@rman << EOF >> $LOG 2>&1
    run {
    configure retention policy to redundancy 2;
    # debug on;
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    backup incremental level 0
    skip inaccessible filesperset 10 noexclude
    format '/u0/oracle/backup/INCR_%s_%p'
    database include current controlfile;
    release channel d1;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    backup skip inaccessible filesperset 50
    format '/u0/oracle/backup/ARCH_%s_%p'
    archivelog all delete all input;
    release channel d1;
    report obsolete;
    delete noprompt obsolete;
    allocate channel for maintenance type disk;
    crosscheck backup;
    release channel;
    allocate channel for delete type disk;
    delete noprompt expired backup;
    release channel;
    EOF
    My database world is Sybase, a little bit Oracle skills too but no rman.
    Can anybody describe me the steps to restore that backup set?
    Thanks a lot.
    Daniel S

    1. shutdown and backup your database (!!!).
    2. start in umount mode
    3. rman target sys/manager@EON1 catalog rman/rman@rman
    4. at the RMAN prompt perform a point in time restore/recover, e.q.:
    restore database until time "to_date('19.01.2009 13:00:00','DD.MM.YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";
    recover database until time "to_date('19.01.2009 13:00:00','DD.MM.YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";

  • Palm TX won't hot sync via wifi, but will surf the internet via wifi

    My Palm TX will hotsync with Windows XP via USB only. I cannot get a wifi hotsync. I can get on my wireless home network and surf the net, but I cannot hotsync to my computer through my wireless home network.
    I've tried everything I can think of. I cannot find my computer on my TX during a Hotsync search with the Firewall on, or off. I've hard reset my TX, I've hard reset and wiped my TX. I've entered my Computer name into the TX manually and I've entered the IP address of my computer. Nothing..... It does a USB sync just fine. I've checked to make sure TCP/IP connection was turned on in the Palm Desktop software . . . it just won't sync via wifi.
    Using:
    Windows XP home
    Palm Desktop 6.2
    Palm TX: with original OS and original Hotsync
    ...help?
    Post relates to: Palm TX

    Ditto that, though until about a week ago I could sync my TX via Wi-Fi without problems. Now it doesn't get past the initial screen, then the error that I should check my connections, etc. I want this back so I'm gonna work on it.

  • User Managed Hot Backup via Sql

    Hi being a bit old school - I am trying to understand the steps required for a Hotbackup managed via Sql ( sorry all RMAN fans ! )
    I understand that I can backup each tablespace in turn ( via the necessary ALTER TABLESPACE <x> BEGIN BACKUP and then take it out of backup)
    I presume also that I simply take a backup of my control file ( wither as binary or as trace if need be )
    I am also guessing that you do not backup the Redo Logs ( since you will reset these on any recovery anyway )
    The bit I am not sure about is the Undo Tablespace - can it be backup in eactly the same way as any of the other tablespaces ?
    Are there any other components that I need to backup ( apart from archive logs )
    thanks,
    Jim

    But c'mon .... user managed backups? How about dictionary managed tablespaces? initialization parameter files instead of spfiles? Ok, I'll give you the DMT (old skool hippies should be lol now). But user managed backups do have their place, and seriously, I think plain old parameter files are in many cases better than strange binary things that need special software to manipulate and require you to remember arbitrary things. I cuss at regedit every time...

    What is the business or technical justification for not going with rman?
    I can still remember my grandfather arguing with the guy at the tire store, insisting they put inner tubes in those "newfangled" tubeless tires . . .My last lawn tractor had much better luck with tubed replacement tires than tubeless with puncture sealant. Naturally as soon as I bought a new tractor I got a puncture, it doesn't come with sealant. Anyone who's ever struggled with a bead that doesn't set in without a high pressure air pump will appreciate grandpa's point of view. As well as sew-ups.

  • Missing logfiles when hot backup is taken using RMAN

    Hello All,
    I am having the below situation .Please help to clarify.
    I have taken hot backup using RMAN. Database is in Archivelog mode. It doesn't take backup of online redo logs. The status of my redo logs are as below. All are not archived.

    /u01/app/oracle/oradata/redo03.log ----Active---Not Archived

    You can give even
    SQL> alter system checkpoint;and do you have any idea at what point you want to recover your database? Even though they are in ACTIVE stauts, when you are taking backup. Still you can apply them how much you want. There will be no lost data. But ensure you haven't opened[resetologs] database.
